Chapter 46
RING BELL FOR SERVICE
Late Morning Day 25
The delicious aroma from the lunch I was bringing the Sheriff, Bishop, filled my small VW Bug quickly. I had been too nervous to ask the men in the kitchen for something to go. So I stopped at a little Diner in town before heading to the Sheriff's Station, which was on the outskirts of Moonlit Mountain.
The mountain roads leading to the station wound through dense forest. Most of the trees were Pines and Cedars, which stayed green all year long but spatterings of red and orange leaves dotted the woods and let me know, it was, in fact, close to Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos the day after.
It was smart of Jess to choose that day to do something with the Portal. The veils between the living and the dead were at their thinnest this time of year. She would have an easier time accomplishing her task. Whatever it may be.
I couldn't remember the last time I looked at my calendar. The days blurred into weeks and so much had happened since I came to Moonlit Mountain. I parked and grabbed the food bag, heading into the small Police Station.
Moonlit Mountain was a small town and even though the paranormal activity was high, the station was small and undermanned.
I guess it's hard to keep people around when it comes to curses and the strange. And boyfriends that kill them. You don't know Jonny killed the deputy and his uncle for sure. Ha! I laughed at myself.
It was chilly in the station despite the sparks shooting from an outlet between two filing cabinets. Haven't had their electrical problems fixed yet. Officer Cathy and her partner's desks were empty. A bell on the counter separated the waiting room chairs from the officers desks, held a sign that read:
Ring Bell for Service.
I raised my eyebrow and noticed the fluorescent overhead lights flicker. The same tone I heard when I was arrested for Chef's death, I heard again. Like a chorus. A high-pitched but not unpleasant musical tone. I hyper-focused on it and got sucked into its melody.
I imagined myself in a gorgeous ball gown, pink floaty tulle and silver stars, dancing in a crowd of masked strangers. The edge of the lacy mask dug into my cheek and made me itch a little but something compelled me to keep the mask on my face.
Champagne came by on trays and I grabbed one gleefully. Sipping at the effervescent bubbles.
"Jane." The Sheriff said loudly and snapped his fingers in front of my eyes. "Hi," he said when my eyes focused on him. He wasn't in his typical Sheriff's uniform and opted for a more casual look of dark jeans and a nice button-down shirt. The look was complete with a pair of well-loved but polished cowboy boots.
"Hey. You look nice." I held up the bag of food and he practically salivated.
He leaned in and kissed me quickly on the lips. "I'm thinking of trying out a new look." He took the bag from me.
"Well, if it counts for anything, I'm in favor." I smiled.
He laughed and opened the half door, letting me into the inner offices. "I thought you might. You seem nervous when I wear my uniform and thought there could be others who feel the same way. I'm hoping it will help me get information from people easier."
I followed him into his office and he shut the door. I sat on his desk, my feet off the floor, and glanced around.
"I've had three different extermination companies out here. We don't have mice."
I made a face.
"Or rats, or bats, or any other creepy crawlies. We even adopted a couple of cats." He stood in front of me and gently turned my bruised eye to him. "You didn't...heal yourself?"
I shook my head and hopped off his desk. I sat in a chair across from it and tried not to glance around the floor.
Bishop sat in his office chair and opened the bag of food containers. He opened the to-go boxes and tore the little bag covering plastic utensils. He pushed the box of food toward me.
"It's all yours. I ate before I came over."
"With Jonny?"
I nodded.
