Chapter 40

COLD

Early Morning Day 24

The cold was endless and my body shook uncontrollably.

"I've taken over your body's systems. You're hypothermic." Keiran's familiar voice calmed me. "I thought I lost you."

"What happened? Where am I?" I asked in my head.

"I saw you go into the water and our connection stopped. I got it back as you landed on the dock."

What. The. Fuck. I closed my eyes and tried not to panic. My body was numb as I lay on the cold, wet, hardwood. The vivid green of Nen's hair glowed behind my closed eyelids, the sparkly green scales of his mermaid tail burned in my memory. His beautiful visage was interrupted by the nash of sharp, shiny, teeth.

Keiran saw it too. "I told you not to go in there." He looked at the scar on his hand. A flash of his memory as a child, searching for the biggest fish and finding a Nixie instead.

"Cherry's down there." I relayed the gruesome image of her swollen eyeless face to Keiran.

"Damn." He winced.

The mental meld between us was wide-open and I could tell he had nothing to do with Cherry's death. I saw him breaking up with her. In a surprisingly gentle way. Not like he did with me in high school.

"We can discuss that another time. For now, I'm going to draw some of the coldness into my body."

Unsure how he was going to do that, I shivered on the dock. My heart beat a sluggish and faint flutter in my chest. The space between each gentle thud grew more and more with each passing second.

"She's here," someone shouted, rushing to my side. They checked my pulse. "She's too cold. I can't get a pulse."

A woman shouted over me, "Get the Sheriff back here!"

A car horn honked repeatedly from the direction of the parking lot.

The man leaned over my mouth to check if I was still breathing.

I couldn't feel my body so I was unsure myself.

"Her breathing is too shallow. Someone needs to do CPR." The old man stood.

"You're too cold, your temp is still dropping. Where the fuck is my Uncle? You should have told Jonny to let me out of this fucking closet." Keiran shook violently, unsuccessfully trying to loosen the straps pining him to the gurney. "Who's around you now?"

"It's just some neighbors, I think." The couple working on my body were much older, maybe retirement age. They were dressed in bathrobes and I could sense their nervous energy.

My body paused from the violent shaking and the man felt for a pulse again.

The honking stopped and a small boat engine turned off as it pulled up to the dock.

Bishop's voice, "Pulse?"

The man shook his head. "Too slow."

"Fuck." Bishop felt for my pulse. "I feel it, barely." He checked to see if I was breathing, leaning over me.

I shivered again, my body convulsing against my control.

"Who's called the ambulance?" he asked.

"Our daughter," the man answered.

"Blankets," Bishop ordered.

The woman rushed off.

Bishop leaned in, close to me.

The chattering of my teeth made it almost impossible to speak but I managed to squeak out one word, "Keiran."

"Give me your phone," he ordered the old man.

He handed it over to Bishop with shaky hands.

Bishop dialed a number and held it to his ear. "Jonny, goddammit answer your fucking phone for once."

A beep signaling the start of a voicemail played.

"Let Keiran out you fucking asshole. Jane needs him." He hung up and handed the phone back to the old man. He checked my pulse again. "Fuck this. We can't wait." He picked me up and carried me to his boat.

It was difficult getting through the narrow passageway but Bishop practically jumped down the steps with me in his arms. He rushed me to his bedroom and placed me on his bed, he removed the wet shirt completely and covered me with blankets. He moved a space heater closer to me and dug around in his closet for more blankets.

I stopped shivering and watched through Keiran's eyes as Jonny released him from the straps and muzzle. "What's wrong with her?" he demanded Keiran tell him. His face was black and blue with swollen bruises.

Keiran was hesitant, not wanting this to come back on his Uncle.

Diego leaned against the door frame.

Keiran decided quickly that telling them was quicker than trying to fight them. "She sleepwalked into the Lake. She's hypothermic and the closer I am to her the easier it is for me to regulate her body temperature."

"The Lake?" Diego stood up straight.

Jonny freed Keiran from the bed with cracked, bloody knuckles. "She's been at Bishops."

"I'll get Doc." Diego's voice faded as he rushed away.

I slipped away into the cold darkness of unconsciousness.

***

Keiran was whispering in my ear and my brain. "Wake up. Wake up. It's time to wake up." He was rubbing my arm vigorously as he lay next to me in Bishop's bed.

I heard him but couldn't open my eyes and my consciousness threatened to slip away again.

"She's fading." Keiran clung to the thread keeping me from oblivion and shivered next to me. His hand gripped mine tightly.

"What the fuck did you do to her?" Jonny growled at Bishop as he picked me up, the blankets wrapped around me. He didn't wait for an answer as he carried my barely conscious body to a large Escalade at the end of the dock.

My temperature dropped as I was removed from Keiran's touch but he climbed in quickly behind us and found my hand again.

He shivered, both of us too cold.

Jonny kept me in his lap, the blanket wrapped around me as the car sped down the road. The heaters were on full blast and Doc checked my vitals as my teeth threatened to break against each other.

"She needs to get warm," Doc said. "Wrap her in this blanket." Doc handed Diego a silver emergency blanket. "Get her warm. Quickly."

Diego helped Jonny remove the damp blanket and Jonny wrapped the silver one around me. Diego gently pulled my dripping hair away from my body and over the foil blanket. He removed his black sweater and dried my hair with it.

"What is he doing here?" I asked Keiran in my head.

"They've been doing a lot of...talking. You know how brothers are." A brief image of them fist-fighting flashed in my brain.

Doc felt for a pulse on my wrist. "It's faint but it's there." He turned to Keiran. "Were you in the water too?"

Keiran's teeth chattered and he shook his head. He was taking more and more of the coldness from my body.

"Stop it, Keiran. It's not yours to take. Let my body deal with it."

"Your body is fucking dying, it's not going to recover if it shuts down."

"I'll be okay." I didn't think I could die. If the gravedigger was ready for me he would have taken me already. I imagined my steel brainbox with the tiniest of pin-holes. Blocking Keiran from accessing my body.

I convulsed immediately. My heart stopped its sluggish beat altogether and my breath halted in my throat.

Keiran had been controlling more than I knew.

Doc checked my pulse again. "She's going into cardiac arrest. We need to start chest compressions."

"Fuck." Jonny laid me down on the floor of the large vehicle. The seats had been removed and replaced with little cabinets that contained various medical supplies. An undercover ambulance fit for any injured gangster.

Doc straddled my body and placed his palms over my naked breastbone.

This is going to fucking hurt.

He pushed down hard and some of my ribs cracked under the pressure.

"Fuck!" I screamed internally, the pain breaking through the numbness and bringing me more into my body.

He counted as he thrust his hands against my chest. "Mr. Zantana, you know how to do mouth-to-mouth?"

Jonny knelt beside me and gave me a breath.

Keiran shivered violently. "She's not doing good guys," he said between chattering teeth.

"You know this through your...link?" Jonny asked between breaths.

Keiran nodded.

"Is she still...still in there?" Bishop asked quietly.

"Switch with the Sheriff," Doc instructed Jonny.

Jonny wanted to argue but thought better of it and traded places with Bishop.

"She's still in there," Keiran answered him, "but I don't know what will happen to her if her body shuts down."

"Switch me." Doc looked at Jonny.

Jonny nodded and quickly straddled my body, taking over the chest compressions.

Doc lifted his phone to his ear. "Bring a bed to the front of the lodge, we can't wait for the gate to open."

"She's blocking me. She won't let me help her," Keiran said to Jonny and Bishop.

"I won't be responsible for any more deaths besides my own," I let him know.

The Doc hung up as the tires came to a screeching halt. The doors to the SUV opened quickly and with a rush of hands, my body was placed on a gurney, and very warm blankets were wrapped around me. Like a snuggly cocoon, I sank into it, my body still shaking.

A mask with a bag of air was placed over my mouth and a man squeezed it slowly. My body had become so numb I couldn't feel my broken ribs but I was reminded of them as the Doc jumped on top of my body and started chest compressions again.

We were wheeled into the closest room, and I was transferred onto a bed. Doc checked my pulse and I guess it was back because he climbed off the bed.

The man squeezed the bag over my mouth and looked at all the other men in the room. "Which one of you is getting naked?" Everyone paused. "Body heat is the quickest way to warm her up."

Jonny stripped to nothing. Bishop to his boxers and they laid down on either side of me.

"Sex would help you recover faster," Keiran suggested.

"My body is as cold as a corpse and shaking. I don't think either one is going to be okay with that."

"You need to date someone who's down with the creepy."

We looked at Diego at the same time.

"What?" Diego's eyes narrowed as he looked back at me. He seemed unusually perky.

"I don't need to complicate this any more than it is. Sex just seems to get me in trouble anyway. I should've stayed celibate."

Keiran scoffed, "There's one thing for sure. She's never having sex with either one of you again."

"You said the quiet part out loud. I thought you were free from tormenting me?"

"Sorry. Old habit." He shrugged. "They would have found out anyway."

Jonny glared at Bishop. Probably adding him to his list. "Why was she in the fucking water in the first place?" he accused Bishop.

The Sheriff's guilt flashed over his face briefly. He ran his hand through his shaggy hair.

"It's not his fault." I added nothing to the conversation.

"She was in my bed one minute and the next she was...I don't know. Just gone." Bishop blew out an exasperated breath.

"This isn't the first time she's sleepwalked," Keiran let everyone know.

Bishop looked at Jonny. "You knew about this?"

Jonny shrugged. "It's not an issue when she sleeps with me. I don't have a problem keeping her in my bed."

"Tell them I found Cherry's body under the water." I wanted the subject to change to something more important than my sex life, or lack thereof and Bishop looked like he wanted to punch Jonny. I didn't want that either.

"Now's not a good time." Keiran seemed nervous and I probed at it with a tendril of thought. He was afraid of being a suspect because they dated.

"But you had nothing to do with her death, right?"

"Yeah, but I don't have a good alibi or anything," Keiran argued.

"Just fucking tell him before the fish eat her and there's no evidence left." I urged him.

"She saw Cherry under the water," Keiran interrupted.

Jonny tensed beside me. "Just Cherry?" He looked at me.

The feeling coming back into my body was painful, like each nerve a pin prick.

"Cherry. Your girlfriend?" The Sheriff was quick with his question.

"We broke up." Keiran ran his hand over his short hair. "But yeah. That one."

The Sheriff inhaled. "I'll call it in. Get some divers out there. Can Jane show us where?"

Jonny interjected, "Jane needs time to recover. She needs time to rest and-"

Bishop cut him off, "and you think that should be in your bed?" he asked incredulously. "You're the one that chased her away in the first place. How does your fiance feel about all this?"

Maracella probably hadn't recovered from her back-fired spell yet but did Jonny visit her? Was he taking care of her? I caught a glimpse of Keiran's thoughts.

"All this and not to mention the real problem. Jess and this stupid Portal."
