The first few weeks of class passed Ari by in a rush. She was pleased to find that her self-guided summer studies had put her far ahead of her peers, and she had aced all of the homework assignments and class quizzes with ease. In fact, a few of her professors had already caught on and had promised her they would ask about transferring her to a more advanced class. Until then, though, she would have to be satisfied with using her free time on extracurriculars and research projects of her own devising.

She had become particularly fond of potion crafting recently, and the alchemy professor had let her take one of the class potion kits back to her room with her so she could try experimenting with more complex recipes whenever she wished. The kit was a large (and heavy) box sectioned off into squares, each square containing a little glass jar of a basic essence. Essences are the building blocks of potions, highly concentrated substances that are usually distilled from a particular plant or animal. They each have distinct chemical and magical properties, and carefully mixing tiny drops of essences at the right times within some diluting agent is how most potions are made. For example, the essence of milkwort has strong purifying properties, so it is often used in healing potions to rid a person of disease. But it also has a tendency to weaken and sedate the ailing person, sometimes to such an extent they die anyway, so the essence of bear bone marrow is added to milkwort healing potions to strengthen and invigorate the patient. To mix the two, you must add only two drops of each to a wooden bowl and stir gently, gradually adding clean water until it fills a standard flask.

Ari loved the puzzle of potion brewing, and the seemingly infinite possibilities. There were so many essences out there, and more being invented every day, that trying every combination was impossible for any one person. So much for her to discover!

Two weeks into the semester, Ari found herself sitting on her bed in the evening trying to decipher a complicated recipe for a plant growth potion; she had a dream of growing her potted creeping wisteria until it was big enough to traverse the entire ceiling of her room. The potion kit was open next to her, and a few jars of essences were spread around haphazardly.

She had expected this to be simple, but it wasn't turning out that way. Encouraging a plant to grow and reproduce SHOULD BE theoretically similar to potions that made people want to reproduce. She glanced over to the drawer of the nightstand next to her bed, where she kept a potion for... personal use. Plenty of potionmasters before her had worked out formulae for aphrodisiacs/love potions, and Ari had modified and perfected her own recipe over the past few years. Only for herself, of course. She was still a virgin, technically, but even scholars needed some way to relieve the stress.

She pulled out the vial and looked at it. Her roommate wouldn't be back for a while, right? A party or something? She couldn't quite remember. Ella, her roommate and best friend, tended towards the scatterbrained and kept a rather unpredictable schedule, if you could call it that at all. Ari sighed, setting the vial on the nightstand next to her lamp; maybe later. She was struck a little sad by the thought of her best friend out at a party, while Ari was sitting alone, masturbating. Not that she had anyone to blame but herself, she was always uncomfortable around large groups of people, or even small groups of people she didn't know.

She tried to get back to her work, but her focus was broken. She kept glancing at the vial of aphrodisiac, and just thinking about the prospect of pleasuring herself was making her pussy open up a little in anticipation. Eventually, she gave in and laid back with a sigh, letting her fingers travel under her shift to spread her lips slowly. She liked to get herself stated without any help, then once she was horny take a gulp of potion to extend her orgasm, or more commonly, orgams.

Just as she was reaching for the potion, however. the door burst open and Ella strode in. Ari yelped and pushed her shift back down to cover herself, but Ella thankfully didn't notice. She was carrying school books and still wearing her school uniform, a simple pleated black skirt that went down past the knee, a white blouse, and a black vest emblazoned with the crest of the Academy. She groaned as she tossed her books haphazardly onto her bed and promptly followed them by throwing herself face-down onto the mattress. "Arrriiiiiiiiiiiii"

Ari rolled her eyes but smiled at the same time. "What, Hangnail give you detention again?" Ella had been given detention the week before by their elderly and ornery Theory of Magic professor, Ms. Hangnail.

"Noooooo... Medvin dumped me!"

"Oh. I'm... sorry. Which one is he again?" Ella rolled over and gave Ari a mild glare. "The one with red hair. Little bit of a beard. Plays skyball."

"Oh, right. Medvin." Ari still only had a bare recollection of who Ella was talking about. But who could blame her really? Ella was going out with a new boy every other week, if not two at the same time, so they all kind of got jumbled in Ari's head. Ari also paid very little attention in general to the boys at the Academy, mostly because she rarely came into contact with them. The Academy has been accepting to both boys and girls since its founding, but they had an 'ancient tradition' of separating the sexes for their classes, claiming it encouraged better learning for the students. There were still social opportunities if you sought them out; the students at the Academy had plenty of time after classes and on the weekends when they could do as they wish and make friends with the opposite sex. Ari had made a few male acquaintances last year the few times Ella had dragged her out of their room to hang out with her and some of her other friends, but it was never her preference. She would rather be here in her room, comfortable and reading a good book. And... maybe masturbating. Usually masturbating. At least a little.

"And I was supposed to go to Emeric's party with him tonight!" Ella cried suddenly, as if she had just thought of it. "No!!! I've been waiting for this since the start of the semester! I can't go alone!"

"I'm sorry, El; but you can still have fun without a date, right?"

Ella propped herself up on her arms. She was clearly upset, but her eyes were dry. Good sign, Ari thought, she must not have been that into this guy. "Normally, I would absolutely agree, my erudite friend," Ella said, "but the thing is, the guy hosting this party is cool. Like, way cooler than me, even. His name is Emeric, he's a year above us, and getting invited to one of his parties is like a shining badge that says you're on top of the Academy's social ladder. Medvin is on the skyball team with him, so he was my in. But now I can't go! This is the worst!"

She flopped back down on her back and slammed her fist into the mattress in anger.

Ari felt a pang of pity. She might not care about being at the 'top of the social ladder,' but she knew how much things like that mattered to Ella, and it did hurt her to see her best friend this way.

She looked over at the alchemy book sitting next to her. For the first time ever that she could recall, the schoolbook looked incredibly dull. Maybe her inhibitions were a little lowered from her masturbation cut short, but sitting here alone was, remarkably, not what she was in the mood for tonight.

Tentatively, she said to Ella, "Well... why don't we just go anyway?" Ella immediately sat up again on her bed and squinted at Ari, "You want to crash a party?"

Ari blushed and almost changed her mind. "Well... yeah, I guess. I don't have anything important to do here. I'm kind of in the mood for some adventure for once."

Ella smiled broadly. "I think a night of crashing parties with my bestie is just what I need." She hopped off of her bed and started digging through her clothing chest, tossing various garments onto the floor as she searched for something. "I was planning on wearing this, but do you think it's too formal? It would be fine if I was going as a guy's date, but if it's just us... no, I think I need something more fun. Hm... Oh, how about this?" She pulled out a red dress made out of some silky material and held it close to her body. It hardly went down past her mid-thigh, and the neckline looked rather revealing as well, but Ari knew from past observation that red was definitely Ella's color. She nodded and said, "Looks like something that will make Medvin regret his decision, that's for sure."

"You read my mind. Now, for you..." She returned to her chest, digging out various articles of clothing, occasionally glancing over at Ari, but then frowning or shaking her head and throwing them haphazardly back in.

"I have that dress I wore to the winter formal last year." Ari said hopefully. "Um, no." Ella replied quickly. "It was gorgeous on you, but definitely too... I don't know, fancy? It makes you look like you stepped out of an old romance novel. Great for something more formal event, but not a party like this. Tonight, I'm going to make you look so sexy you'll have to fight off the third-year boys like cockroaches."

Ari's brain immediately conjured up an image from one of her go-to fantasies, of some boy from one of her classes (she liked to change it up) kissing her passionately in some empty classroom or out-of-the-way hall, his hand running up her side, cupping her breast... she felt herself heating up again, but was jolted back to reality by Ella standing up with a dress draped across her arm. "This has to be it! I haven't worn it in years, but it should be the perfect size for you!"

The dress was pale silvery blue, the color of a frozen river or the sky on a cold spring day. It was clearly longer than the red one Ella picked out for herself, which Ari appreciated, and the top had much greater coverage. She took it from Ella's hands and ran it through her fingers. The fabric was silky and flowed like water. 'I... kind of love it, I think." Ari said, giggling a little at herself.

"Of course you do, it's perfect! Now put it on and I'll do your hair." Ari pushed back a loose strand of hair and grimaced a little, but pulled her shift over the top of her head as Ella undid the buttons on her blouse and let her skirt fall to the ground. Ari and Ella weren't in the habit of hanging out naked in their room, but had never been very self-conscious about being undressed together. It was just so much easier than making the long walk down to the shared bathrooms for the girls' tower every time you had to get dressed.

As Ari went to put on the dress, however, she found a surprise. "Um, Ella? I think you accidentally handed me this, too." She blushed as she held up a set of mostly transparent lingerie in the same color as the dress.

Ella giggled, "Nope, silly, it goes with the dress. See how they match? You wear the lingerie underneath, so later in the night, you're ready for... whatever." Ari blushed deeper and her eyes widened. "You expect me to... to wear... this? Come on, El, I could never. Even if nobody ever saw it, and they wouldn't, because let me remind you that I have never had sex and have no intention of letting any boy take off my dress, just knowing I had something like this on in public would make me die of embarrassment."

"Oh come on, Ari! You did say you were looking for some adventure, after all. I let you keep your silly attachment to virginity all of last year, but no more! You are going to get laid, soon, and you are going to enjoy it." Ella sighed and in a more supplication tone, added, "At least allow for the possibility? For me?"

Ari tried very hard to think of a reason to say no, but her mind betrayed her and she slowly acquiesced. "Fine. I'll wear the stupid lacey things, but I still don't want anyone else seeing them. I'm just doing it for the sake of... well, just for fun, I guess."

She proceeded to quickly strip off her panties and replace them with the much skimpier pale blue ones and matching bra; both had plenty of lace and decoration, but she noticed they were fully transparent in the spots where it actually mattered. Looking at herself in their full-length mirror, though, she had to admit it did look pretty good. The cups of the bra made even her small breasts look round and enticing, and the panties left just the right amount to the imagination, complete with only a single thin string that ran down the crack of her butt.

As she was examining her own body, she couldn't help but compare it to Ella's. Her best friend was several inches taller and much curvier in the right places. Her breasts filled out the top of the red dress nicely, and left an impressive amount of cleavage exposed. Her stomach was flat without being thin like Ari's, and her hips widened out to perfectly smooth thighs and a butt just asking to be caressed.

Ari quickly pulled on her dress and sat while Ella carefully cast a few cosmetic charms to get her hair to stay in the right place and add some color to her face (just a tiny bit, Ari made her promise). Ella had always been better than Ari at spellcasting; it was a far less precise science than potions, more reliant on 'feeling' what you wanted a spell to do. Ella excelled at it, but Ari struggled.

The two girls covered up their party outfits with their bulky winter uniform coats, in case they ran into any school staff, and made their way through the grand halls and corridors of the Academy castle to the boys' dormitories. Ari had never been over on this side of the castle, and was surprised at the differences in architecture. The stonework was simpler, with less decorative flourishes, but it also projected an aura of stoic grandeur. It was... more masculine, she supposed.

They heard the sounds of the party echoing down the halls before they saw it. Ari clutched at Ella's arm, unable to hide her nervousness. "Don't leave me alone in there, okay?"

Ella chuckled, but squeezed her arm back, "Of course not. Consider me your wingwoman. I'm sick of boys for now, but damn it if I'm not going to get you laid tonight."

"Now wait, I said I didn't..." They rounded a corner and the party came into full view. It was situated in one of many large, out-of-the way hallways that were common in the Academy. Several large open archways led out on one side to a balcony looking out over the rolling hills and winding river of the grounds.

There was no food, but barrels of wine hovered in the air in two clusters, one inside and one outside. Ella steered Ari towards one of those immediately. "Just what I need," she said as she filled two wooden mugs with hot, strong mulled wine. "If anyone asks, Medvin and I had a fight but are still technically together. Remember, he's our in." She handed one mug to Ari, who took a bare sip. It was much better than she expected, strong, certainly, but sweet. Ella took hers and Ari's coats and tossed them on a pile.

As she did, Ari took a bigger sip of her wine and looked around. Ella was right: this was definitely the top of the social ladder. Most of the students were older than her, in their fifth and sixth years. She recognized all of the skyball team, effectively celebrities to the students, each of whom had a group of girls fawning over them. The girls all had interesting charms on themselves to try to stand out: she saw an older girl whose hair floated around her head like she was underwater, another whose irises glowed blue with actual light, and another who wasn't even wearing a dress and was covered only by clouds of thick pink smoke that clung to her chest and waist and smelled like flowers.

Ari couldn't help but feel awkward and out of place. People would glance at her, but it seemed like they immediately dismissed her and moved on. She was grateful when Ella got back, standing tall and looking confident and sexy.

'Why can't I look like that?' Ari asked herself internally as she admired her friend. She hated feeling so mousy and timid, and ignored. Ella drew eyes like a magnet, and held them.

In fact, a guy tried to talk to her as she approached Ari, but she didn't even look at him, just held up a hand dismissively and said to Ari, "Come on, let's go outside."

Ella hadn't forgotten about her promise to get Ari laid, unfortunately. She led Ari to the stone railing at the edge of the balcony and turned, leaning back on it so she could survey all of the party-goers. "So... a guy for you. Let's see who we've got, here..." She chugged down a couple gulps of her wine. Ari tried to imitate her, but could only drink a mouthful at a time without coughing.

"There's Paul," Ella said, nodding at a shorter boy with straight black hair. "He's a little full of himself, but nice enough and good in bed as long as you're into what he is... not a good fit for you, probably."

Ari giggled, "How about someone you haven't already slept with? Is that even a possibility?"

Ella gave her a flat look, but that only made Ari laugh harder. "Okay, fine. How about Bear?" She pointed out a massive blonde guy who stood a head taller than the guy he was talking to and had muscles like she had never seen before.

"Is... his name actually Bear?" Ari asked, making Ella giggle this time, "You know, I'm not actually sure. He doesn't talk much, but I bet he'd give you a hell of a workout."

"If I could even fit it." Ari said, blushing as she said it. She still didn't have any interest in having sex, but it was fun to joke about it with her best friend. They kept up the conversation, going over almost every boy at the party and getting progressively more tipsy, until one particular boy walked up to them. Ella stood up straight and her face ignited with anger, and Ari gulped. It was Medvin, Ella's recent ex.

"What are you doing here?" He asked Ella, crossing his arms in front of him.

"I don't know, enjoying the party? You're the one who invited me, Medvin." Ella said his name like it was an insult.

"That was before we fucking broke up! YOU weren't invited, I was and you were coming with me."

"Is it that hard to look at me, asshole? Can't even be in the same room?"

"Just leave. You'll probably have a new boyfriend in a week, slut, but nobody here wants anything to do with you."

Ari was feeling distinctly uncomfortable already, but the insult to her best friend was a step too far. She shifted angrily, which drew Medvin's eyes off of Ella to her. He looked her up and down, and then added. "Your friend can stay, though. She's hotter than you, anyway."

Ari knew he was only saying it to get at Ella, but it still made her words die in her mouth. Nobody had called her hot... ever.

Ella stepped closer to Medvin, clearly furious, but she was cut off by a shout from inside. "Headmaster!"

Everyone around them immediately started running inside. They had been caught! Everything became a blur as Ella grabbed Ari's hand and they ran together through hallways and staircases Ari barely recognized. As they ran, the other partygoers gradually split off, trying to find their own ways back to their rooms. Ella seemed to know where she was going, and indeed she did, as they got back to their room remarkably quickly.

"I'm sorry I even made you come." Ella grumbled as they stumbled back into their room, "That was kind of the worst."

"You didn't 'make' me come," Ari reminded her, "I wanted to! And I... actually had fun! Even if it didn't end all that well, I'm glad we went!" She felt lightheaded and maybe a little slap-happy, likely thanks in part to the drinks, but she thought maybe even more than that she was just drunk on the joy of having a friend like Ella in her life.

"Listen," she said, squeezing Ella's hand, which she was still holding, "Those things Medvin said? They aren't true. I've been friends with you longer than anyone, and I know they're not. You're the kindest, most joyful and open-hearted person I've ever known."
