Hirunus, the senior male archmage was becoming increasingly suspicious of the council of archmages and more specifically the women on the council. There were numerous times when the archmages had met but the two male archmages weren't invited. Typically he never even knew a meeting had been held. The Magistra had him off doing tasks and travelling. Too many coincidences. When he had confided with his male colleague they both realised that they were being deliberately excluded... and only because they were men.
They needed more information. They ran through many scenarios but couldn't come up with any rational reasons explaining their omission. The women were planning something that required secrecy and from men. Fortunately they usually met in the same large theatre. He instituted a plan to make a small hole through the wall to an adjacent room. The sound from their meetings could be magically amplified in the other room and so no magic would be able to be detected in the meeting room. The female archmages were taking precautions to maintain their secrecy from all mages except female archmages. They began to refer to them as witches.
They both agreed that it was vital to find out. They were both staggered once the scope of their plan was discovered. The plan was going to be implemented next year in Cantra first and then in Monagon. It would mean the loss of magic for them and to be changed into small, weak, submissive and passive men with the body of a woman, although they would retain their cocks and balls. Once the change was instigated they would be changed forever without magic and with no way to change back.
They knew Minnerv was ruthless but they didn't realise how ruthless. Even her partner and son had been part of her trials on men! The culmination of her plan was to subjugate and convert all men continent wide and instigate female mage rule forever. If they were discovered, they were sure to be disposed of or prematurely altered. He secretly travelled to Minnerv's estate to do a final confirmation when he knew she was away with the legions. The enlarged women, the smaller men with breasts. Even her own children altered. The chilling reality in front of him was imminent. Her plans were well advanced and close to being commenced in Cantra.
Depression set in for a few weeks as they couldn't see how they could prevent their plan and their own demise. The witches had the numbers and the power. There were hundreds of witches and only two of them. Depression slowly turned to anger. How dare they presume to make such a monumental and permanent decision for all men without their consent or even knowledge. He believed that Monagon was close to being the perfect society. Men and women equal, a meritocracy, programs for science, health, education and much more. They were spreading their culture slowly over the continent, only using violence if they must. There was much work to be done but they had ideals and laws which the witches were ignoring. Perhaps they even believed that they were doing the right thing to eliminate male violence and aggression. From what he knew of Cantra, it was the last place on earth you wanted to be born a female. However to implement a change on all men was an amazing act of hubris.
They had a few options :
- drink the water, loose magic and became a feminised, submissive male : NO
- set up a counter conspiracy of male mages (far fewer and less powerful than female mages) : UNFEASIBLE
- tell the king (mages have all the power) so only likely to cause conflict and unable to prevent the outcome : UNFEASIBLE, but see below
- leave for an offshore island or the far frozen north / south of the continent. Two of the few safe places on the continent : ONLY SOLUTION
- take as many male mages as possible
- research counter magic (need a long time)
- tell the King and High Council later
Their only option was to escape. Once the waterways were contaminated they couldn't avoid drinking tainted water directly or from livestock and plants. Taking as many male mages as possible would be the only way they could form a sustainable society away from Monagaon and the witches. Faking their demise if possible so there would be no pursuit. Minnerv would be implacable if they tried to escape and they couldn't defeat her as an individual let alone with a party of witches arrayed against them. All the male mages on the loose and not neutralised would be far too great a risk for the witches to allow. They would follow them to the ends of the earth in an unrelenting campaign.
They had a year to make their escape. They started regular male mage only expeditions - sailing, hiking, mountaineering, etc. The witches had been doing women only events for decades. The increasing numbers of mages, both male and female made their male only events possible and drew no suspicion. They even ran events for both sexes also which were very popular, to arouse even less suspicion.
Research and maps about islands remote from the mainland were studied and they asked naval explorers about their missions. They were the only two who knew the whole story of what the witches were attempting. Junior mages were not involved.
They planned a week long sailing expedition along the coast to the south. Every male mage except one who was sick was on the boat when they sailed. They had secretly put in substantially more food and fresh water than they needed. There were some mundane male sailors onboard under the pretext of using their voyage as a training mission. Not one woman was aboard, mage or mundane. They were planning to find an island or larger landmass to settle to the far west. If it was unpopulated they would have to sail back at some stage to find women to expand their renegade society.
The first night they moored off shore and explained the situation to everyone onboard. To a man they were outraged and supported their actions. They continued to sail south and at the planned point, away from any populated areas, with no vessels in sight, set sail to the west. They were lucky that there had been a severe storm on the fourth day but they stayed safe in a sheltered bay until it passed. They threw some planks and clothes overboard, including several items that would float. There would surely be a rescue mission to search for them when they never returned.

Minnerv arrived back in secret and was meeting with Magistra Asthena in the mage college.
"I delayed seeding the border as I needed to speak with you first. Too much has changed. What is the disposition of the king? I have heard rumours that he and the council are very concerned about Cantra and the way victory was achieved."
"It is indeed fortunate that you have not seeded as I couldn't find you when you were travelling back secretly. I had scouts all along the border trying to intercept you. We cannot proceed. It would surely start a civil war and a second mage war."
"What! What has caused this drastic change of mind?"
"The king called me to council. He knew at least the outline of our plans for Cantra and other states. He wanted assurances that the change, as he called it would not occur elsewhere outside of Cantra and demanded to know how it happened. But first he outlined why we were doing it wrong. Mages acting unilaterally and not via the king and council was a violation of the agreement made 70 years ago. He was extremely concerned and said that everything we had achieved since the mage wars was at risk."
"He explained at length and I could not fault his logic. We were.... are wrong to proceed any further. He acknowledged that conquering Cantra had worked and seemed to be progressing in the right direction with minimal loss of life. The problem was that we acted alone and obviously as a trial to expand our magical takeover solution elsewhere."
"Monagon is an entirely different case and as much as we think we are better and more able to rule, it is the very integration of mages and mundanes, women and men that make Monagon the success it has been for decades. He asked me to consider what the effect would be of changing the men and women, particularly the men. What would be the reaction of the citizens? It would be completely obvious that the mages had initiated the change. Without the consent of anyone and only for the apparent reason of taking over and becoming a female and mage led society, which no one asked for or wants."
"There would be riots, civil war and chaos. The men may end up submissive and diminished in a month but what of the period between? And just because they would be smaller and weaker doesn't mean they would be powerless. They would loose none of their intelligence, knowledge or their capacity for reasoning."
"The king and council would see it as treason as would the citizens and the state. Everyone would be against us. His logic was inescapable and I can't believe we were so foolish to think it would work in Monagon as it would in Cantra. Women are not oppressed here. We were blinded by the power we could wield and our desire to lead a female mage revolution. There are 1,200 battlemages but five legions with 35,000 men. In the capital alone there are 600,000 citizens and millions in the whole state."
"At the first sign of men or women changing here, he would send every legionnaire in every legion against the mages. The Marshall and the legates have all been briefed. The citizens would be told everything and we would have no safe haven anywhere. He described some of the tactics they would use and we could not prevail. And that assumes we would want to fight against and kill our fellow countrymen. And if by the remotest chance we won and defeated the legions, the whole state and its citizens would still be against us."
"There is a reason for the rule of law and he knows that we are moving away from a king or queen royal dynasty. In fact he is helping to achieve that. To be ruled by a council and avoid the abuses of power that a king or despot can go to. We have seen that in our own past and in other states - like Cantra."
"If we submit to the king and council's mercy, telling everything : all our plans, plots and secrets, we will be given amnesty and pardoned. Every archmage and mage must swear by geas to be loyal to the state. Even you and I, the prime movers of it all will be pardoned but must relinquish positions of authority."
"The king had also been warmed by the missing male mages who had disappeared in a storm when on an adventure training ship tour. All 38 male mages in Monagon and the crew had supposedly died in the storm. Its was only a year ago and a massive tragedy at the time."
"However the true story was that the two male archmages had uncovered our plots to magically alter the population of first Cantra and then Monagon against their will. Feminise and make the men smaller and submissive, make all women larger and stronger and the mages to become literal demigods. They realised they couldn't defeat the overwhelming numerical superiority of female mages. Escape was their only option. They faked their deaths and set off into the western ocean to establish a new society as far away as possible from the witches as they called us. Their story matched exactly what was happening in Cantra and the High Council was forwarned."
"Minnerv, we badly misjudged the situation. I support the king and Monagon as it is now too. I implore you to recant as well. If you think it through we would loose and set back Monagon decades. Many would be killed and even if we won every battle, we would loose the war."
