I got the idea for this during a discussion with someone on if only there was a way to find out how many scientists, mathematicians, artists, etc. humanity may have lost in the form of kids killed during wars and famines. I deliberated and decided to keep the story in SciFi section, although it could have gone to Non-Erotic section as well. All persons mentioned are imaginary.

English is not my first language, so expect mistakes.

Edited in MS Word.

----------------------

I put some silver ingots across the window and asked, "How much for these?"

The shady guy looked carefully at me and said, "We don't buy stolen goods."

"I am not with law. I am not in trouble with law. I just need some money. If I were not desperate, I would not be coming to a shitty place like yours."

He took no offence but picked up the ingots. "You melted something to get this?"

"Yep," I replied coolly.

"What?"

"Why does it matter?"

"I could have given you more for actual stuff."

"Actual stuff is gone anyway. How much for these?"

We agreed at a price that was pretty low, and we both knew. I didn't care. I had tons of things hiding, and I could steal if I needed.

No one will be able to keep me in prison here anyway.

----------------------

The woman was crying in a deserted bus stop shed. She was plump, short, ruddy-faced, medium-length hair, and not attractive in general terms. She was shivering--clearly not dressed for the winter. Snowing season was yet to arrive, but temperatures were low and the winds were chilly. Her hair and face showed lack of bath, sleep, and food. But she was alert when she heard my footsteps. I could have crept in easily, but I didn't want her to panic.

She turned and, with fierce eyes, said, "What do you want? I have nothing. Leave me alone."

I asked her calmly, "Are you Sadie Malito?"

Now her guard went up many notches. "Who are you?"

"I am a friend, Sadie. I am here to help you. I kept my words soft.

"I have got no friends. How do you know me? Are you stalking me?" She was extremely suspicious. I didn't blame her. I heard there was prejudice against blacks, and I could see that now.

"My name is Matt Berry. I will help you, but you have to accept my help. Please don't create problems for me, as I am new to this place too. But trust me, I am the only way you can save your baby."

She was alarmed now. "How do you know about my baby?" Her hand protectively went to her belly.

I raised my hands and simply said, "Let me help you, Sadie."

----------------------

Sadie sipped hot coffee and wolfed down pie, soup, and breads simultaneously.

"Slow down," I said. "There is no rush. I will keep you fed till your baby is there."

She slowed. After munching for some time, she spoke, "I was afraid I would have to sell my body eventually, but I thought I would avoid it somehow. Not anymore, it seems." her dirty face had a sad smile.

I said a bit loudly, "I don't want your body." Some people raised their necks. I lowered my voice. "I don't want anything from you. I just want your baby to be safe. I told you many times I am your friend."

She didn't trust me and I don't blame her. I was a stranger with weird clothing who knew her name and the fact she was pregnant even when it was not showing and I was offering to take care of that baby.

I was a pretty suspicious stranger.

-----------------------

"That room is yours. It locks. There are clothes on the bed; they should be your size. Mattresses should be comfortable--it is not new. Most items here are used. You can adjust the heating level. If you need something, we will go tomorrow and buy. There is food and other stuff in kitchen area. Take bath, comb your hair and sleep well." I said pointing things out.

"Who are you? I don't know any Matt or Berry. We can't be related--you are black and I am white. Your accent is weird and your clothes too. Are you alien?" she attempted a lame joke.

"In a way, yes. There are vitamins in that drawer. Tomorrow we can visit a doctor."

"You want my baby for some reason?" she asked suddenly.

"No, Sadie, I am just trying to help you birth a healthy boy."

---------------------

Sadie came out of the doctor's room. I didn't go with her to give her privacy.

"Hospital delivery is going to be expensive?" she asked when she reached me.

"I have got money. Sit here and wait for me." I left to sort bills. The accountant seemed puzzled when I paid in cash but didn't ask any questions.

Sadie was waiting for me. "How did you know it was a boy?"

"Huh what?"

"You said last night you want me to birth a healthy boy. I came to know it was a boy only today when doctor told me."

"I just assumed. I would prefer a boy," I lied.

-------------------

She brought me dinner and noticed me counting some bank notes.

"You don't have to cook for me. Just take care of yourself."

"I can do at least this much for you. I like cooking anyway. I wanted to have a husband and nice homely life but the man I was..."

"You don't have to tell me anything." I cut her sentence.

She didn't like that but was quiet.

"How much money do we have? Is it enough?" she had noticed the wad was not much.

"I have more. I will bring when we need it. You don't worry about it."

-------------------

"I have thought of a name for my son." She seemed in a good mood today. She served a chicken dish for me.

"I know. Liam is a lovely name."

Her hands suddenly stopped. "How did you know what I was going to name him?"

"Doesn't matter. I had to know some things about you before I could help you."

"Other things you could have known. But how did you know what was in my mind?" She had caught me.

I sighed--I will have to come clean. "Sit down. Let me tell you everything."

------------------

"I come from the future," I started.

She stared at me foolishly.

"Everything I am going to say is true, and there is no way I can prove it. You can decide after I have completed if you still need my help or not. But I will rather you let me keep helping even if you think I am a total nutjob."

She nodded.

"I come from this same town, same state, same country, but from two centuries in the future. There are a few things in my time that may look like magic to you. The same way your phones or cars will look to someone who comes from 200 years ago. I didn't lie about my name--I am indeed Matt Berry. I work as a senior technician in the Historic Humanity Judgement department. It is a field that allows humanity to find out what a historic person truly was or who they would have become if they lived long enough. People say history is written by the Victors. My department finds out if famous and notorious people were indeed good or evil without solely trusting in what is written in the history books. I was married to Irene, with whom I have a daughter, Tinkle. Now I am divorced. I am not a nice person. Irene was a lovely woman. She still is. But I don't deserve her. My jealousy and suspicious nature resulted in our divorce. I resorted to physical violence."

Sadie cringed away from me.

"Don't worry. I am a changed man now. I don't blame you for reacting like that. I react the same way about past me."

Her expression had not softened, but I decided to continue.

"Irene didn't take me to the police--but she doesn't allow me to see Tinkle either. She said she doesn't want a violent person near her. I tried apologising in all possible ways. But Irene refuses to have anything with me anymore. I don't blame her; I deserve all punishment. But I do miss my Tinkle."

"Some days back, Irene came to my home. But she was not there to forgive me--she came to tell me that Tinkle was dying. Irene wanted her to spend some time with her father before she died. She said she was not that heartless to come between a dying girl and her dad."

I started weeping, and Sadie held my hand. She had tears in her eyes too.

"I met my Tinkle. She was dying of an incurable disease--it is not known to mankind in this year. Her face was deathly pale, but she was so happy to see me. I thanked Irene for letting me meet her and promised her I would save her. She simply thought I was consoling her."

"But I had a plan. I could see what any historic figure actually did. I could also see what they were capable of doing; they didn't die. I worked like a madman, and I found out that had Liam Malito not died days after his birth, he would have worked as a medical researcher and would have found a possible cure for the disease that my Tinkle has."

Sadie looked shocked to her core.

-----------------------

"My son will die," she was weeping.

"No. He will not. He died because you were weak and sick and could not arrange any medical care for him. I am going to provide you everything so that he is born healthy. You will have the best care, and you will raise him to lead a successful life. Liam will help save my Tinkle. I have arranged a lot of money; just don't ask me how."

Sadie went running to her room and shut the door.

I didn't follow her but prayed she believed me.

---------------------

Next morning, when I woke up, she was preparing breakfast.

"I thought a lot last night. If you are willing to travel to the future to save your kid, I am willing to take your help to save my kid."

I smiled, "I am glad you agreed," and took the plate she offered.

We settled to eat.

"Won't Liam surviving change the future? Will that not result in something catastrophic?" she asked me while cracking a boiled egg and avoided looking at me.

"I don't know. My travel to past is not authorised. Such travels are serious crime in my time. Like I said, I am not a good person." I tried to smile.

She went quiet. We focused on eating eggs.

-------------------

Her belly was showing but she was active. I wanted her to avoid all work--even offering to get her a maid as robots were not available in this era. She refused but agreed to reduce her workload.

One day after coming out of hospital after some tests, she asked me, "What if Liam decides to become a musician or baker instead?"

She watched my face intently. I thought and then gave her my honest answer.

"I didn't think about it. I can only do what is within my control. If Liam decides to be a piano player or open a bakery, I am certain he will do well in that. I am keeping faith on my research about Liam."

She seemed satisfied.

------------------

"How did you know where to find me?"

"I can explain, but you will not understand many of the future technologies. It doesn't matter anyway. I found you on time."

"How will you go back to your time? Do you have a time machine?"

"No. That's not how things work. I have read that book but I am here thanks to a carefully calibrated time hole. I will be sucked back to my time line two days after Liam is born. There is a limit to how long I can stay here. I have to go back or else I will be missing from my timeline and Tinkle will never be born."

"I hope you are not making up all this, Matt."

"I hope so too, Sadie."

-----------------

Sadie laid down beside me. She was wearing only a shirt. "I want to do something for you, Matt." She placed her hand on my crotch.

"Thanks Sadie. Just pray for my Tinkle." I tried to move away.

"That I do daily, Matt--believe me."

"That is enough."

"Do you want to, may be like sleep with me or want some kind of release? I will be happy to do that. I can't do much with the bloated belly but I can still do enough."

"There is no need, Sadie."

"It is not like a payback or anything. I just really want to do something good to you."

"Sadie, there is nothing I want from you except you raising Liam in the best way possible. I am not going to take any advantage from you, even if you are offering."

Sadie kissed me on my lips. "I hope you do well once you go back, Matt."

-----------------

The doctor came from the delivery room; I refused to be there because of my nerves, even though Sadie was willing. There was no one else other than me for her. Staff assumed I was the father, though there were some strange gazes given our different skin tones. Doctor smiled at me and gave a thumbs up and I took a sigh of relief. "Nurse will take you to see your wife and son in a few minutes but everything is alright. Kid is doing well and so is the mother." I didn't correct him.

When the nurse handed the baby to me, I felt a weird sensation inside me.

Was it the touch of the innocent baby or maybe my departure time was on the horizon?

----------------

Back at home, Sadie was nursing Liam. She didn't bother to cover her breasts. She was smiling watching Liam suckle on her engorged nipples and looked a couple of times towards me. I watched both of them and felt amazingly content. My time in this timeline was ending, so I had to explain a few more things to her.

"Sadie - I have paid all pending medical bills. This house is paid for the next 6 months, including utilities. There are around 10,000 dollars in this bag and the car outside is on lease for next 6 months as well. I will leave, or rather disappear, tomorrow sometime. I want you to be strong for Liam now. I wish I could stay longer but that will not happen. I have to be back to my timeline or things will really go haywire."

Her smile faded and eyes became wet.

"I don't know how I will live without you, Matt. I am so used to living with you."

"I wish there was some way, Sadie."

"No, no. I am not trying to stop you. I understand and I appreciate all the help you gave to me. I know you saved Liam's life. I don't know what I would have done without you. I promise I will do everything possible that Liam studies science."

I smiled.

"Thanks Sadie. Also, here is a name: Harold Stienmann. He lives in Vermont and works in a bank. I have written the address on this page. He will help you and raise Liam like his son. You go to him once you are ready, but don't delay it too much."

"Vermont? It is very far from here. Do I really need to go there? I can find my life here. Why do I need his help? Why will he help me?"

"Harold doesn't know me or you presently. But you need him because Liam needs a father. He is the person you marry in the original timeline. He is a kind person and will not mind marrying a single mother. Be ready to take initiatives; he is a shy person." I smiled and saw her blush a bit.

"So, I know my man already. Thanks for that." She beamed and then added seriously, "I wish I could thank you properly, Matt." She kissed me again and started focusing on Liam once again. She was hiding her weeping eyes.

I retired to my room.

---------------

I hope I have done enough. Once back to my timeline, I know I will be arrested and will rest of my life behind bars if I am lucky. Most likely, I will be sentenced to death. Time travel is a very serious crime--not even law-keepers are allowed to do so. But if my efforts give Tinkle a longer life--even if by one day--I was willing to take the risk. I am certain at least Irene will understand my actions. Praying, I shut my eyes, waiting for the new future to unfold.
