Khazal took inventory of the artifacts they had so far. All but one item were in their possession to assemble this mysterious spherical artifact. They had acquired another piece on a barren planet, inhabited by reptilian creatures. No signs of intelligent life were on that planet, which was a bit of a relief to the crew. They seemed to get distracted by individuals while they were looking for components.

However, the last leg of the journey was a long one, and they were all getting restless. They had finally seen the big oceanic planet that was marked on the star chart.

"This is where your mother is from," Jinji remarked to Venus.

"I understand that," Venus replied. "She has told me about the place."

"Will we get to meet your grandmother?" Jinji inquired.

"Ugh," Venus uttered. "Possibly."

"I wish to meet Nana," Jinji said with a sweet voice. "I believe she will like me most!"

Khazal got away from the mayhem. "Do we have coordinates for the last piece, Delia?"

Delia typed at the console. "We have it here--a village called Treblinka, in a nation known as Poland. I believe we can find the artifact component without incident." She swivelled in her seat. "We have an issue, however. We must purge the fusion tanks. The deuterium has fused an excess amount of helium-3 together, due to the amount of travelling we have done."

"I do not wish to delay our return to Bok," Khazal said. "How long will the purging take?"

"Sixteen of the days of this planet," Delia replied. "We will have to park the ship on the surface and let it vent. It is a serious hazard not to do it."

Khazal's real motivation was that she wanted to test the artifact right away, but would not do so on the surface of the ocean planet. "Very well. We will take refuge with Venus's nana. How will we acquire the artifact component?"

Delia turned back to the console. "I have something these people will want."

They had landed away from the village as to not attract attention, then caught a ride share. Penny had given Venus access to a credit account she had set up the last time she was on Earth.

The detector brought them to a run-down antique shop. The last part of the artifact was sitting on a shelf right behind the elderly man with a total of nine teeth. In exchange for the artifact, Delia offered a five carat diamond. The old man agreed easily to the trade. The women all made way back out of the shop, with Khazal holding the piece. It was a bowl shape similar to the one they found on Gerek.

"That was it?" Khazal looked down at the bowl, with its strange inscriptions on it. "We now have to spend sixteen days on this planet just waiting?"

"We can see what Venus's grandmother is getting up to lately," Delia responded. "I imagine she will be delighted to see her granddaughter."

The sophisticated build of the

Parallax Vista

allowed for scattering of radar, so the ship could fly into American airspace completely undetected. They managed to get over Florida, where they could safely dispose of the ship. The ship would be disguised as an abandoned school bus in a scrapyard.

The four women disembarked with their gear bags. "Where are we supposed to go now?" asked Jinji. It was dark out, and the only light source was an old LED street light.

"My grandmother has said she is dispatching a carriage for us," Venus said. "We should wait here for it to arrive. I have tapped into her...what do they call them? That you call people?"

"A cell phone," replied Delia.

"Right," Venus remarked. "We can patch into her primitive device with our hand-comms."

A white van pulled up alongside the four and parked. The driver got out and walked around to meet them. "I'm looking for someone named Venus?"

The man was mid-twenties, tall, and well-built. His face was hard to make out in the dim light cascading down on them. He had a deep, forceful voice.

Khazal stepped forward and put her hands on her hips. "What is this rust-bucket supposed to do for us? Is this how you would treat your guests?"

The man smiled and held up his hands. "Well, as far as transportation, this is all I got. Can I at least grab your bags?"

Khazal clutched her bag to her chest. "I would not trust you with any of my possessions!"

"This will suffice for us," Venus said as she placed a hand on Khazal's shoulder. "We are not in any position to disparage this land vehicle."

"Yeah, and I don't feel right leaving four girls stranded in Bithlo," the man said with a chuckle. "C'mon! I'll let you ride in front."

Khazal seemed reluctant to move, but allowed the man to escort her into the high-up front seat. She wiggled around, the vinyl on the seat broken and uncomfortable. The other women climbed into the back seats and got as comfortable as they could.

The man eventually climbed in. Khazal got a better look at him now with the dome light on. She was mesmerized by his handsomeness, but also irritated with his cavalier attitude.

The driver looked back over his shoulder and smiled. "Wow. You women sure are pretty. Where are you all from, anyway?"

"Far away," Venus said flatly.

"Okay, I get it," the man said with a nod.

Khazal sat there with her arms folded. "You have not even told us your name, rude man!"

The man pushed his lips out as if he knew what kind of trouble he was in. "Well, I'm Chris. Chris Martinet."

The women in the back all called out their names. Khazal sneered and looked out the side window. "I am Khazal. You will now transport us to Venus's grandmother."

Chris nodded and shifted into gear. "We're off to Evergreen, then. Hey, maybe you'll get to see the rockets lifting off while you're here. You staying in town long?"

"Sixteen days," Delia said.

"Cool," Chris answered. "Hey, did you all get fed on the plane? I can get us some burgers or something."

Chris took them to a fast food restaurant. They all piled out and went inside. Chris asked what they wanted, but they were confused. He picked for them and hoped for the best. Jinji was the brave one and took whatever, finding she really liked the french fries. Delia liked the sodas tasting like cactus juice without the alcohol. Khazal reluctantly ate some of a cheeseburger, trying to ignore Chris as much as possible.

"Why did you pick us up?" asked Jinji to Chris.

"Oh, I worked with Ms. Leighton for a while now," Chris explained. "I do a little handiwork for her on the side. I also do trips with the van." He pointed out the window at the vehicle. "One of the few gasoline engines on the road these days, but it's being good to me so far."

"That van is ugly," Khazal said between bites of her cheeseburger. Venus gave Khazal a kick under the table.

They continued on their journey. Chris was doing his best to coax some conversation out of Khazal, to no luck. "Uh, can I turn on the air conditioning, or something?"

"You may," growled Khazal. "It is gross in this climate, like a fish tank. Ugh."

Chris shook his head and flipped the switch. The other women were chatting and laughing.

Chris got them into the community of Evergreen and pulled up to a humble abode. The women all piled out with their bags. "Let me know if you need to get picked up, okay? I'll be up for another couple of hours."

The women waved goodbye, but Khazal stood with her arms crossed. They headed to the front door. "Why are you being so difficult with that boy?" asked Jinji.

"He is a clod," Khazal groused. "I do not appreciate his cavalier attitude towards us. Plus his taste in food is appalling."

"I liked the food," Jinji said.

"You are an idiot," Khazal growled.

They rang the bell, and an older woman answered the door. She got out her glasses and squinted. "Venus?" Venus stepped forward. "There you are, my

baby

!" She gave Venus a huge hug and groaned in delight. "Oh my goodness!" She touched Venus's hair. "Dear! You're all supposed to have silver hair, aren't you?"

Venus touched her own hair. "Oh, I just wanted to dye it."

Grandma looked at Khazal. "Dear, did you dye your hair as well?"

"This is natural, Mrs. Leighton," Khazal replied. "I got it from my birth mother."

"Oh, sweetie! You can all call me Nan. Maybe Joanie if you're feeling comfortable with it." Joan waved them all to come in.

The four Boccan women all filed in and settled down in the small living room. Khazal sat down on the floor, as seats were scarce. "Oh, can I get anyone anything?" Joan want to the kitchen. "Tea? Coffee?"

"I would like coffee," Delia called out.

"You do not even know what that is," Khazal griped at her.

"We will be gracious," Delia shot back. "It was good enough for the queen, and it is good enough for Nan."

Joan brought in a steaming cup. "I hope instant is okay, dear." She handed the cup to Delia. "My goodness! I thought my dear Penny was athletic. Look at you all! Just such gorgeous young things!" All of the women except Khazal were beaming.

"Nan, this climate is unbearable!" Khazal seemed whinier than usual. "I am used to heat, but the vapour in the air? Bleh!"

Joan giggled as she switched on the air conditioning. "Better, dear?" She went to sit down with her own coffee. "Oh, you must be the daughter of that lovely couple who came with Penny. That was what...twenty years ago? Yes, Penny was almost as grouchy as you are!" Joan laughed. "Venus, sweetie, you remember meeting me before, right?"

Venus looked confused. "I was on Earth before?"

"Oh, yes," Joan said. "Your mother insisted on me meeting her first daughter. She was so proud to have a daughter to get to become queen someday. You were maybe three years old." She put a hand to her chest. "Now look at you! Oh, I just wish Tommy was alive to see you."

"Nan, I do not wish to be discourteous, but I do not believe we will be comfortable in this small home," Jinji said timidly.

"Oh, I can't have you poor girls sleeping on my floor," Joan replied.

"We can survive for one night," Venus offered. "I hope it is not an imposition. This is very late to be seeking out an inn."

"Well, I don't mind!" Joan bounded up. "I'll get you all some blankets and pillows."

Joan got them all set up. Venus, being the princess, was allowed on the couch. Joan gave them all a kiss good night and let them sleep.

"Khazal?" It was Venus on the couch.

"Yes, greatness?" replied Khazal in the dark.

"Be nice," she commanded, then rolled over to sleep.

The next morning, Joan made the Boccans breakfast. Delia helped herself to more coffee while the others devoured pancakes.

There was a ring at the door. "Oh, that must be Raquel," said Joan. "She's here to walk Arnold." Arnold was the overweight beagle that slept through the girls showing up the night before, and he needed the exercise.

The door opened up, and a lovely young woman was standing there in a sleeveless top and jeans shorts. She had shoulder-length brown hair and sunglasses. "Hi Ms. Leighton! Sorry--am I late?"

"You're just in time, dear!" Joan turned to the hallway. "Arnold! Come on, boy!" She then focused on the young lady. "Are you okay, Raquel? What's wrong?"

Raquel winced. "Oh, we just found out we have to move out of our rental last night. I don't know what we're gonna do! I can't afford to be in some hotel for two whole weeks, and I can't fly home!"

Arnold came bounding through into the hallway, dragging a Boccan behind him on a leash. "Arnold! Halt!" Jinji struggled with the oversized beagle, who was too eager to go for a walk.

Raquel looked past Joan to see the stranger. "Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't know you had guests!"

Jinji stopped as well and smiled. "Pardon me! I was just getting Arnold ready for you. I am Jinji!" She stuck her hand out, and Raquel gently took it.

"Jinji is one of my granddaughter's friends," Joan said. "They wanted to pay me a visit."

Raquel was still staring for a long time. "Oh! I guess I can take Arnold now. Thanks!" She kept watching Jinji as she led Arnold down the path.

Joan closed the door. "Poor thing! I love Raquel like she's one of my own. I would let her stay here, but it was cramped as it was with you girls! She has two roommates to bring along as well."

"Oh, Nan, maybe we can help with that!" Jinji ran to the living room, where the other Boccans were sitting, as Joan followed in. "Greatness, what are our plans for accommodations?"

"I wish to be in a nice inn for a change," Venus insisted.

"Oh, I have lots of money left over from Penny's account," Joan offered. "Even after buying this place, there's plenty left. Plus it really should be yours, Venus!"

"Thank you, Nan," Venus said. "My mother has been very resourceful, it seems."

"We'll give her the good news, then," Joan answered. "Oh, but if you let Raquel stay, she might want to invite her roommates as well."

Khazal jumped up. "We cannot risk these chattering ninnies exposing us! This planet is still hostile to alien creatures. They will surely find out about who we are."

Joan put a hand on Jinji's shoulder. "This one is kind of cranky, right?"

Jinji giggled. "She is still my best friend."

Joan went up to Khazal. "Sweetie, Raquel is the nicest person I know aside from my little Penny. She would never want to hurt anybody. You can trust her. Besides, maybe they can help guide you around town! They can shop for you, and make it so you don't have to go out on your own."

"This is an excellent point, Khazal," offered Delia. "We could use some cultural ambassadors while we are here. If Nan says we can trust this Raquel, we should be open to the idea."

Khazal sneered and sat back down. "Fine. They must earn their keep, however. I do not want rubbish strewn about or strange men coming and going."

Joan flicked her hands at Khazal in dismissal. "She's a perfect angel!"

Joan let the girls check the Internet for a suitable place. They found a four bedroom suite with a kitchen and two bathrooms. "Oof! Look at that rate per night." Joan was amazed.

"We can afford it, Nan," Venus assured her. She turned to Delia. "Perhaps we can let Nan have some gold for her trouble."

Joan smiled with a confused look. "Gold, dear?"

"I think we have three pounds left," Delia replied.

"Three pounds?!" Joan covered her mouth. "Dear, gold is ten thousand dollars an ounce!"

"That's all right," Delia said dismissively. "Venus has her vault. She can easily make it up. She has ten million in there."

"Ten million pounds?" Joan's voice was weak.

"No," Delia replied. "Tons."

Joan made a small squeak.

When Raquel returned with Arnold, Joan told her the good news. Raquel was delighted to hear that she and her two roommates would be looked after. "Thank you so much!" She was talking with all of the Boccan women, but she grabbed Jinji in a huge hug. "You're gonna love Honor and Stephie! Oh my God, you saved us!"

"My grandmother cares about your welfare, so it is only fair that we try to care for you," Venus told her. "Nan will give you the details of where we are staying. We have to head over there to get the place ready."

"I even arranged for a ride over for all of you," Joan announced.

"Oh no!" Khazal growled. "Not..."

Chris was there with his van within a few minutes. The girls all threw their bags into his vehicle, then drove off to their resort spot.

"Do not look at me, driver!" Khazal sat with her arms folded and her face scrunched up.

Chris just chuckled as he drove along. "Listen, I know we got off on a bad foot. Why don't we grab some sushi or something later tonight?"

Khazal turned slowly to look at the young man. "Well...I suppose if it is okay with Venus."

"I do not care," Venus replied from the back with unusual impishness.

Khazal groaned. "Very well. I will see you later tonight."

Chris dropped them all off at the resort. The buildings were a series of larger apartments designed for short-term rentals. Chris was chivalrous enough to bring in all of their bags. The room was accurate to what was advertised on the website.

"Wow," Chris remarked as he gazed up at the tall ceiling. "You girls must be pretty important to be able to afford something like this."

Venus gave Chris a sizeable amount of money for the transportation. Chris thanked Venus, then went out the door. "See you tonight, Khazal!"

Khazal gave Venus a slap on the shoulder. "Greatness, you dolt! I wanted you to make an excuse for me not to go with him!"

"Oh, you dumb slattern!" Venus rubbed her shoulder. "I do not want you moping over the artifact! You can bear two weeks without knowing what it does." Khazal replied with another sneer, then decided it was not worth challenging the future queen over it. She might have been right, as well.

Within an hour, Raquel appeared in the doorway. "Oh, wow!" She gazed up at the ceiling, much like Chris did. She then went to Venus. "Thanks again for letting us stay with you! We promise we'll be quiet."

A tall, thin black woman came into the apartment as well, with a delightful face and long black hair. She had a huge smile when she saw the place. "Oh, this is so much nicer than our place!" She bounded in and extended a hand. "Hi! I'm Honor!" The Boccans all shook hands with this gorgeous gal.

In walked the next one. She had a sweet face, shoulder-length red hair in a bob cut, and large glasses on. She was round, but in a curvy way, with large boobs. "Um, hi," she said shyly. She then took a look at all of the Boccan women. "Whoa! Um...do you girls like to tan?"

Delia stepped forward and took the girl's hand. "Hi! I am Delia. Welcome." The girl's eyes got wide as she was led into the living area.

"Hey, Steph!" Raquel came forward. "Everyone, I want you to meet Honor Washington and Stephanie Stone."

"Some of us will have to share rooms," Delia mentioned. She patted Stephie's hand. "How about you and I share accommodations?" Stephie nodded with her mouth open.

"I'll take Jinji!" Raquel had her hand raised, then realized everyone was staring at her. "I mean--if she's okay with that."

Khazal stood there with her arms folded. "I suppose Venus will want to be alone."

"Oh, no!" Venus patted Honor's shoulder. "I would like to get to know our friend here. Besides, this will give you the freedom to sexually ravage our driver."

"YOU WHORE OF THE DESERT!" bellowed Khazal. All of the other women laughed at Khazal's outburst.

The humans and Boccans all got settled into their new rooms. Stephie volunteered to make dinner for everyone, except for Khazal, who was preparing to go out with Chris.

There was an island in the middle of the kitchen. Delia helped set places for everyone, while Steph made chicken cutlets and rice with saffron. Steph doles out the steaming plates, and the other women sat down to eat.

Khazal came out of her bedroom in a slinky short dress and heels. She was putting her hair up and wearing dangly earrings. "You look great, Khazal," exclaimed Honor.

"Thank you," Khazal said as she got her handbag. "Delia, please monitor your communicator. I will call you in case Chris gets fresh and I have to kill him." She left the place.

The girls were all eating the food. "You are a wonderful food preparer, Stephie," Delia said.

Stephie looked embarrassed at the attention. "I just mixed up some garlic and cream cheese to stuff them with. It's super easy. I can show you sometime."

"So where are you all from?" asked Raquel.

The Boccans all looked at each other. "We are from the largest continent," Venus said, trying to sound convincing.

Raquel squinted. "You mean...Asia?"

"Yes, of course," Venus went on. "My mother is very wealthy, so I am able to travel often. She insisted that I visit my grandmother at this time."

Honor rested her chin on her hand. "You're all aliens, aren't you?"

"What?!" Venus gasped and guffawed. "Us? Do we look like disgusting aliens? No, we are from planet Earth."
