Kartie ran down the hallway as fast as he could. The pounding of the metal beneath him was the only sound being made. He turned the corner sharply causing him to run into a cargo crate. He brushed it off and ran down the hallway in front of him. The button was right there in the middle of the Cafeteria. But before he could reach the cafeteria, the security door shut down in front of him. "No, come on!" He said, trying to pry open the huge metal door but to no avail. Shadows of tentacles reached the hallway and--in desperation--Kartie ran into administration. He rolled under the console in the middle of the room and held his breath. He sees two feet enter the room as they walk around the console. Kartie's breath fogged the visor of his helmet as he lay there hoping, hoping it didn't find him. It walked behind him and stopped. He held as still as physically possible trying not to get noticed. After a few minutes, nothing happened.

Suddenly, he feels a tentacle wrap around his foot and drag him from under the console. He tried to hold onto the floor but it was too strong. It lifted him by his foot until they were face to face; visor to visor. "Why? I trusted you! You son of a bitch!" Kartie yelled in a heavy Russian accent. He threw a punch that hit it in the visor. He threw another punch but it caught his fist. It then proceeded to break his wrist. Kartie yelled out in pain, holding his broken wrist. Its visor forms a crack in the middle and opens, revealing a vicious set of jaws and a tentacle-like tongue. "Dear God," Kartie whispers. The tongue then pierced straight through his visor as Kartie went limp. It began to devour Kartie's upper half leaving only his waist and his legs. It dropped what remained of Kartie on the floor as its visor seemed to repair itself from being cracked. It walked to a vent and looked at Kartie's body before opening the vent and crawling away.

Several hours earlier.

Tasha's elevator began to ascend as she became excited. It was her first mission on The Skeld and she was ready for it. When her application for the mission went through, she felt like she was going to explode. They even let her pick out her favorite color for her suit, yellow. The elevator dinged as the doors opened. Tasha walked down the hallway to the gate of the ship. It opened to a person in a green suit standing there; he was an older fellow with short fading grey hair with stubble on his face. "Welcome aboard," he said, extending his hand. Tasha shook his hand as he introduced himself. "My name is Garrison Ivy. I'm the Captain of this ship. And I assume you're the new cadet?" He says.

"Yes, sir. My name is Tasha Canary, this is my first mission so I'm kind of excited," she says.

"Good. Nice to know there are still people out there that are wishing to be up in the stars. Follow me, I'll show you around." Garrison says, motioning her to follow. They walk into the ship through the airlock. Inside is what seemed to be a lounge of some sort along with a person in a red suit sitting down at one of the tables on their phone. He has short brown hair with brown eyes. "This is the Cafeteria, a place where--hold on for a moment. Carson!" Garrison shouts.

The man sitting down gets startled and puts his phone away while standing up straight. "Yes, sir!" Carson shouts.

"What are you doing sitting around here? Go and get the ship ready to launch." Garrison said, sternly.

"Yes, sir," Carson says, running off.

Garrison sighs before turning to Tasha. "Sorry about that. He's Carson Maroon, our Asteroid Defense Marshall. I swear, he would do anything to get on his phone," he says. They walk down through the cafeteria to a hallway. "Here is Administration," Garrison says, holding out his left hand. Inside, there were phones on the wall and a big monitor console in the middle. Along with a man in an orange suit, trying to swipe a card on the console. He had black hair that went down to his neck with dark green eyes.

He looked frustrated. "Come on, you stupid piece of...Grrr!" He grunted. He looked up at them in surprise. "Oh hey, Captain Gary. I swear you need to get a new card reader. Cause this has gone Kaput." He says in a Russian accent.

"Hey. This is Kartie Mandarin, our Administration officer. He keeps tags on everyone on the ship." Garrison explains.

Kartie approaches them and greets Tasha. "Hello, it is so good to have a new face around here." He says.

"Thank you," Tasha says.

"Here is electrical, here the power can be diverted anywhere in the ship," Garrison says. From the room, a man in a purple suit emerges from the darkness. He has dark brown hair and deep blue eyes.

"Yeah, I know. What do you want, Gar-" He stops as he sees Tasha. "Well well well. Who is the lovely lady?" He asks, in a flirty voice.

"Tasha, this is Emil Lavinder. Our Electrical Engineer." Garrison says.

"Well, nice to meet your acquaintance, Miss Tasha," Emil says, kissing her hand.

"Hehe, nice try." She says, pulling her hand away.

"Can't blame a guy for trying," Emil says, walking back in. They move onto the lower engine room where a man in a brown suit is toiling with a cog in the massive engine. He had his back to them as they walked in.

"This is the lower engine room. There is another engine on the upper part of the ship, and they are both run by Russell Cafè, our Maintenance Chief." Garrison states. Russell simply grunts at them as he returns to his work. They walk upwards toward a cross-section in the hallway and take a right into a room with a bunch of monitors and a man in a blue suit checking the ammo count of a pistol in an armory cabinet. He has black hair and blue eyes. "This is the Security Office and this is our Security officer," Garrison says, walking in.

"Babe!" Tasha exclaims, running toward the man. He turns around and smiles.

"Tasha! I didn't know you were going to get here so early." He says. They hug each other tightly as Garrison leans against the wall.

"Well, it seems you already know Mark Cyian," Garrison says.

"Yeah. Gary, this is my girlfriend," Mark says.

"Oh. Alright come on, break it up lovebirds. I'm still not done with showing her around," Garrison says.

"Alright, I'll see you later Tasha," Mark says, kissing her goodbye.

They walk over to the room across from Security and see a giant machine flowing with blue energy. At the main control panel is a man in a white suit. He had atomic blonde hair from where they could see him. "This is the main reactor, all the power for the ship is made right here," Garrison says.

The man turns around and looks at him. "Hey, Gary. The reactor is a little more jumpy than usual. It should get us to Polus, but we should get it checked out," He says. He has baby grey eyes and a scar across the bridge of his nose. He seemed to just ignore Tasha as he talked.

"Hey, Dex. This is Tasha. Tasha, this is Dexter Bleach. Our Head Engineer," Garrison says. Dexter just glances at Tasha before continuing what he was saying. Tasha saw that as kind of rude but decided it was fine since they had to make sure the ship was in tip-top shape. She looks behind her and sees a man in a black suit walking to the entrance. He has dark grey eyes and black hair with a strip of white strains in it. He stops when he sees Tasha looking at him and does an about-face, walking out of the room.

"Who was that?" She asks.

Garrison turns around to see a glimpse of him. "Oh, that's Blake Noir. He's not much of a people person, which is ironic since he runs communication." He says.

"And he's my cousin. I don't like to admit it sometimes," Dexter blurts.

They walk up through the Upper engine room and take a right. A room soon appears, it is very clean and prestigious. In the room are an assortment of medical equipment and two people. A woman in a pink suit is looking over Blake. She has long, brown, wavy hair with a hair clip in the shape of a heart in it. Her eyes are a magenta color. "I don't know doc, I sometimes feel like maybe I'm having heart palpitations," Blake says in a low sheepish voice. She scans a tablet over his chest.

"Hmm, you seem to be fine. If you just wanted to talk to me, you could have just said so," She says, in a kind voice. He blushes slightly while avoiding eye contact.

"Hey, Mattie. Blake here for his daily 'check-up'?" Garrison says, walking in.

"Hi, Gary. Who's this?" She asks, looking at Tasha.

"This is Tasha. Our newest addition to the crew," He responds.

"Hello," Tasha says.

"Hi! It's so nice to have another girl on the ship. My name's Matilda Rose, I'm the doctor on board," Matilda said, ecstatically.

"Hello again," Tasha says to Blake. He simply looks away nervously.

"Don't worry, he's just a little shy. He'll warm up to you eventually," Matilda says. Mark comes into the room and whispers something into Garrison's ear. Garrison nods at him before turning to everyone else in the room.

"Everyone. Please follow me to the cafeteria, there is something I wish to discuss," Garrison says sternly. They follow him into the cafeteria, filled with all the others on the ship. Garrison nods to Mark in approval as Mark goes to the center table and presses a button under the table. When he pressed it, a giant red button emerges from the table. He opens the safety shell and presses the giant button. A loud buzzer blares out as all three security doors leading into the cafeteria slam shut with a hydraulic hiss. A holographic screen appears with their faces and names.

"What the heck is this?" Carson shouts.

"This is our newest security measure. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the Matton incident," Garrison responds. Tasha has heard about the Matton incident. A space vessel named "The Matton" was found drifting in space. All 15 of its crew members were found mutilated, except one. The man said that a monster had killed all of them and that he was able to kill it. The authorities didn't believe his story and arrested him for manslaughter. He was sentenced to life in prison. Though the mutilation of his fellow crew seems unexplainable. "Mira HQ got so worried about the incident that they had every ship install some kind of safety feature. I had Mark here cook up something for that reason," Garrison announced, pointing at Mark.

"Thank you, Captain. I've made these badges in case of emergency," Mark said, tapping an access panel that popped up. Small circular badges with buttons on them come from out of the table. Everyone grabs a badge before Mark continues explaining. "Pressing these buttons will cause a lockdown of the ship, teleporting all of us into the cafeteria. Once here, we can discuss whatever is needed and--in the direst situation--we can vote anyone on board and throw them out the airlock," Mark said.

"What? You must be joking, who in their right mind would think about doing such a thing!" Kartie argues.

"It's just a precaution, no-one is getting voted out," Garrison assures.

"In any case, if you are unable to use the badge, the Emergency button will be here in the Cafeteria. Please use them responsibly. That is all," Mark finishes. Everyone looked around at each with unease.

Finally from the silence, somebody spoke out. "Come on, lighten up! It's better to have this and not need it than need this and not have it. Either way, it's just in case, it's not like it's going to happen," Blake says. Everyone looks at him, stunned by his words. Blake began getting nervous by all the attention he was receiving. "I..uh. I mean, I..um," He stutters. He feels someone hold onto his arm and, turning his head, he sees Matilda holding him.

"Blake's right. We shouldn't worry about something that isn't likely to happen. It's better to be prepared for it if it emerges," Matilda says.

"Well said. On that note, I believe it's time to depart. Everyone, get to your seat, and let's light this candle!" Garrison exclaimed. The security doors open as everyone walks to their area. "Tasha, Mark, with me," Garrison calls. He starts walking as Tasha and Mark follow him. They get to Navigation and they sit down in the three chairs in the room.

"Reactor stable. Fuel at 100%. Releasing outer brackets," Mark announced, working over a control panel. Metal braces connecting the ship to the Entrance Terminal disengage and detach from the hull of the ship. They pull on the straps on their sides and buckle their harnesses. "Engaging lift-off sequence," Mark says, pressing something on the control panel. The ship's thrusters point downward as the ship begins hovering. It gets to an open area on the airfield before pointing the nose of the ship to the sky. Garrison pushes a button and the intercom buzzes to life.

"Alright, everyone. Hold onto yourself, we are launching in T-minus 5..4..3..2..1!" Garrison exclaimed. He smacks a button on the control panel as the thruster point behind the ship and fires at full thrust. The sudden acceleration pushes Tasha against her seat.

The Skeld rockets out of orbit as the turbulence decreases. When they are out of Earth's gravitational range, Mark hits a switch that releases a button from the console. "You may want to hold on to something, Kid," Garrison says as Mark presses the button. The ship activated its hyperdrive and the planets and stars around them seem to become blurs while they travel at ridiculous speed. The feeling of traveling at that speed felt weird to Tasha and she couldn't explain it. It felt like her entire body began vibrating at different intervals.

Suddenly, red lights flash on the control panel along with a small siren. Garrison reached out to the controls to see what the problem was and pressed the intercom button. "Prepare for an emergency exit," Garrison speaks with concern in his voice. He presses a few buttons on the console as the ship exits hyperspeed. The ship comes to a standstill and it slowly drifts into space.

"What's wrong?" Tasha asks.

"I don't know, but it's red flags all across the ship. Something must have happened during hyperspeed," Mark replies.

"Everyone, it seems the ship is damaged. For the time being, I ask all of you to put on your helmets. Russell, Emil, Dexter, please check on the ship and see what's wrong," Garrison says over the intercom. The three get out of their seats and go check on the others.

Russell opens a hatch into one of the engines and peers inside. He looks around until he sees a sort of black substance in the engine.Β He then began trying to remove it, plopping the goopy substance on the floor next to him.

Meanwhile, Emil goes into Electrical and looks over the wiring. It appears that the wires have been chewed on. While Emil checks the cables, he fails to notice a strange dark substance crawling up the wall and onto the ceiling above him.

Dexter walks into the reactor room and hears weird sounds coming from an open vent. "Huh? I don't remember this being open," Dexter says to himself as he inches toward it. He closes into the vent when, suddenly, a black entity leaps out at him causing him to fall backward. "Aah!" He yells.

Emil looks up slowly and sees the creature. Before he could react, it fell toward him, landing on his visor. He tries to pull it off but it has wrapped around his helmet. It covered his visor trying to get into his helmet. His visor starts cracking, making him panic. A small hole forms in his visor, big enough for the slime-like creature to leak into his helmet. Emil keels over and screams in pain.

Russell feels a pain shoot through his foot, looking down he sees the black substance piercing his foot and going into him. He yells in pain and confusion. He can do nothing as he watches it.

Dexter was able to stop the entity from latching onto his body by blocking it with his arms. It keeps trying to push against him until he pushes it off and into the coils of the reactor. It burns in the coils while letting out a screech. It turns to ash and disappears. "What the hell was that?" Dexter asked, out of breath. He hears a buzzer and gets teleported to the cafeteria with everyone else.

"Ok so give a status report," Garrison asserts.

"It seems some of the wiring around the ship is cut so the ship isn't getting power," Emil says.

"Okay, what about you Russell?" Garrison asks. Russell growls silently. "Uhh, what?" Garrison asks, confused by his response.

"Uh, he said the engine's fuel supply has been emptied so we're stuck here," Emil answers for Russell.

"Oh, I see. Dexter, what did you find?" Garrison asks, turning to face him. Dexter just stands there shocked, how was he going to explain what happened to him?

"The reactor seems fine," Dexter mutters.

"Good. It seems we have to repair the ship so we can get out of here. I'll send you all a list of tasks that need to be completed," Garrison explains, sending the info to their hud. The lockdown ends and everyone walks off to do their tasks.

Tasha sees Dexter's face and decides to talk to him. "Hey, you ok? You seem kinda unnerved," Tasha asks. Dexter looks at her and thinks to himself. "If something happened, you can tell me. I may be new, but I'm not an idiot," She reassures him. He then agreed on telling her what he knew.

"Come closer, will ya? I don't want anyone else hearing this," Dexter whispers. She comes close to him as he continues. "I saw something while I was in Reactor. I don't know what it was but it tried to get on me. I threw it into the plasma coil and killed it but...do you think that there are others on the ship?" He asked.

"Hmmm," She grunts, thinking. His face goes sour in his visor as he walks away from her.

"Just forget it, I don't expect you to believe me," Dexter says, walking away. Tasha stares at him wondering if what he said was true.Β As he leaves the room, a shadow of a person hiding against a wall sneakily walks away.

Kartie goes into Electrical and finds the power diverter at the back of the room. He flips two breakers until they are both pointing at a light node labeled "Comms". He heard footsteps behind him and turned his head to see who it was. "Oh hey, did you come here to divert power too? Well you're going to have to wait, Blake needs more power to reach command to inform them we will be late," Kartie explains. The person behind stands there silently as he works. Black spots appear on the person's back and tentacles emerge from the spots. The tentacles draw closer to Kartie, almost engulfing him. Kartie felt something was off and kicked behind himself, knocking the person back. "What the hell are you-uh," Kartie says, staring at their tentacles in disgust. He reaches for his badge on his chest but they flick it out of his hand with their tentacle. They get off the floor and push Kartie against the wall. Kartie kicks them back again as he runs out of Electrical, trying to get to the button in the cafeteria.

Tasha walks into O2 and approaches the oxygen vent. She sees a bunch of clutter blocking up the vent. She reaches into the vent and pulls out the stuff blocking it. Garrison passes by and Tasha calls him. "Hey Garrison! You got a minute?" Tasha asks.

"Yeah, what is it?" Garrison replies.

"What's with Dexter, he seems to hate me. I tried talking to him but he just walked away," She says.

"Dex...ah he...had a really bad childhood. I don't want to talk behind his back or anything, but...he was heavily abused by his father. I remember when he talked about it to me. He mentioned how his father even let other people beat on him. Because of it, he doesn't trust people," He says.

"Hmm," She grunts. Now she felt bad; he must've alot of emotional baggage with him. Suddenly, a loud buzzer is heard and they get teleported to the Cafeteria. Everyone looks around to try to figure out what's going on and then they see Matilda---without her helmet---her badge near her chest and tears streaming down her face. She falls to her knees and starts sobbing.
