I woke up the next morning nervous about how things would feel at work. I was a little excited to go to work as Jaycee. Nobody was going to know I was Jason and in a way that made it easier but also more difficult. Nobody knew me. I was the “new girl” even though I’d worked there for years. I took a long shower and took my time doing my wig and my make-up remembering some of the tips Jayla gave me last night. I was getting better, but I still had to redo a lot of it until it looked right. I secured the wig with extra pins to make sure I didn’t have trouble during the day, but I also brought some make-up, a brush, and more pins in case I needed to fix something.
Back in my room, I thought about what other girls typically wore, and it seemed they wore black leggings about every day. I pulled on fresh underwear and then stretched some leggings up my legs. I twisted and turned in the mirror getting them to sit right on my hips and legs without any wrinkles and I smiled feeling a bit proud of my butt. I wiggled knowing Jason would stare at this thing all day. I slowly worked my bra on getting it fastened and turned it around but then had to adjust the straps to get it to fit so it took me a few times to get it right. I then pulled my work t-shirt over it. The girls often wore it tied off at their stomachs, so it was more form fitting but I wasn’t really in the mood, so I just let it hang.
I finished up with some final looks in the mirror, and then walked to the kitchen to get some breakfast and ran into my mom while she was making coffee.
“Hi Mom!” I said skipping into the room coming towards the refrigerator.
She turned as if surprised but then I could watch her brain reconnecting the dots to know what is going on and why her son looked like this. I could almost watch her brain figuring it out again and come back to the realization of where we are.
“Oh um… hello Jason” She gasped and quickly amended as her brain clicked, “Oh…I mean Ja... Jaycee. I’m so sorry dear. I’m not awake yet.” She said holding her chest looking remorsefully towards the floor. I could see her body all tense about this situation, and I knew while I was adjusting to this, this couldn't be easy for her to just adjust from having a son to having another daughter - even temporarily.
“Oh, mom it’s okay. This is weird for all of us. I’m really sorry for putting you through this.” I said giving her a hug.
Just then Dad and Jayla walked in. Jayla didn’t seem to notice or care how I was still a girl. My dad took a double take. I’m sure Mom and Dad were talking about things all night, but I imagined that seeing me was still a little jarring.
“Good morning, J… Ja... Jaycee.” He said pouring some coffee glancing back and forth from his cup to me.I swear I could almost see his hand shaking just a bit as his brain reset.
“Hi Dad.” I said popping some bread into the toaster doing my best to act like this is a normal morning.
Things felt awkward but I could tell they were all trying. I felt bad doing this to them, but it was an accident. As we ate, I felt more self-conscious, and I ended up finishing a bit faster to head out even if I did want a little more to eat.
“I’ve um… gotta go. I’ll be back later! Love you!” I said grabbing my bag and heading out.
Once outside, I took a deep breath wondering if the whole day was going to feel like this. I climbed in my car and while driving it dawned on me; I’m driving my car - Jason’s car! Nobody would understand that, so I ended up parking a block or so away and walking the rest of the way pretending I took the bus or something.
Walking up to the car wash, it felt like almost any other day. I walked past the weathered and faded ‘Enter’ sign and walked into the front lobby and office area. I felt a pull towards the detail bay where Mark and I normally work through the day shining rims and shampooing carpets, but today, I was the new girl. I had to pretend to not know my way around. I had to pretend to not know anyone other than Mark - my supposed ‘cousin’.
I beat most others there which was very different from Jason’s normal style. I used to just casually stroll in at least 30 minutes late. Barb didn’t appreciate it, but I often did a good enough job she let me slide. Today, I’m miss ‘right on time’.
Walking in, I saw Rae counting cash and setting up the register. She glanced up at me but didn’t say anything because she was still counting, and I didn’t want to interrupt her. She finished and looked up at me and I walked towards her confidently reaching out to shake her hand.
“Hi I’m Jaycee. I’m new h…”
“Yeah yeah… I heard. You’re Mark’s cousin or something?”
She was dismissive and it set me back. I was used to her being really warm, smiling, and caring but now I feel like I’m just annoying her. I lowered my hand and just shrugged it off as she’s having PMS or something. I looked around and Barb wasn’t in yet which was odd.
“Um… do you know what I’m supposed to do?” I asked Rae.
“Getting out of my face is a great start. Go dry some cars or something.” She said without even looking and waving her hand towards me.
I was shocked how rude she was. She never acted like this with Jason. Without saying a word, I headed out to the drying lanes. We were going to open in about 10 minutes. I saw five people out there getting ready putting towels in the containers and organizing the cleaners. It was going to be a warm clear day, so we knew we were going to get a line. As I walked closer, Brewster and Micah took a quick notice of me and turned smiling at me. I knew what kind of guys they were. They were all over every girl for 10 miles around here. Employees, customers, passerby’s, didn’t matter. Brewster was pretty successful, and he got most of the girls he wants. He took out Rae and Zuri his first week here and now they won’t talk to him. He wants to get Hartley who already has a boyfriend, but she won’t touch Brewster with a 10-foot pole.
I saw Hartley getting some towels and then I saw Joe and Byron standing around. Byron constantly showed up to work drunk or high and most of us stayed our distance, but Josiah had been talking to him more and more which is weird because I think he’s said about five words to Jason.
Brewster made his way towards me and met me about 10-feet from everyone else. He took my hand and kissed the back saying, “Well hello there beautiful, I’m Brewster. Who should I thank for bringing you to our carwash family?”
His come on was painfully obvious but it felt very different as the target rather than a distant bystander. Normally I’d roll my eyes and ignore him but now it felt strange and I felt my stomach do a flip and a flop as his eyes pierced into mine. I felt off balance somehow. My legs felt strange and a bit slack. I felt a little flushed and I managed to squeak out, “Hi I’m Jaycee. I’m Mark’s cousin.”
He stood up as if shocked. “Wow, Mark never told me he had such a gorgeous cousin. He’s never mentioned you but if you were my cousin, I’d have a hard time forgetting you. Let me introduce you to my crew here.”
He acted in charge, but I knew better. He was probably the last person Barb would ever promote or make lead, but I went with the story. He wrapped a hand around my shoulder and pulled me tight to him while introducing me to everyone. Just then I saw Barb’s car pull up with Will, her nephew, inside and then Mark pulled in after her just about on time, for him.
I squirmed out of Brewster’s clutches and took a few steps away waving to Mark as he walked towards detailing. He smiled and gave me a low subtle wave back and left. I felt alone without him but there was no reason I should have thought he’d join me on the drying line. Once he and I got promoted to detailing, we never looked back at standing in the hot sun all day.
Hartley scooted towards me and smiled, “Hey there honey. I’m Hartley.” She said with her mild country accent. I smiled and extended my hand, and she shook it. This was so strange because she never gave Jason much attention. She was very pretty but I knew she was pretty religious and had a boyfriend for two years. I always got the impression she was expecting a ring any day.
“Hi there. I’m Jaycee… but… I guess he already said that. Sorry!” I said feeling strangely nervous and I laughed wringing my hands together.
“You’re good sugar. Stay with me. I’ll show you around. So, where you from?”
