--- Madelyn ---
Madelyn was always an early riser, so it wasn't a problem for her to set up a meeting with her tutor, Rachel, before other classes even started. They were supposed to talk about her class and further development at the Academy, in theory, things that should be the most important for her right now. However, her mind was occupied with something different. Or rather, someone. Asher had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, and Madelyn had run away to her room rather than talk and try to cheer him up.
She wanted to know what had happened. Asher and Elara seemed to be so much in love with each other, and just a moment before, they had all been sitting in the room, and everything had seemed fine. Madelyn knew that one argument wasn't the end of the world, but it was a crack in their relationship, which, if not properly patched, could grow and lead to the end of it when there would be too many unresolved issues.
That was what had happened to her parents. Madelyn didn't remember the exact details. She had been too small to remember or fully understand what her parents were arguing about, but over the years, there had been growing friction between them, which they ignored, and it eventually led to their divorce.
Madelyn's father moved out of the city, and the girl was left only with her mother, who worked long hours to pay the bills. In the end, her parents weren't a very active part of Madelyn's life.
The support girl stopped before her teacher's door and took a deep breath, trying to chase away the negative thoughts from her head. If she could only sort out her own problems, then perhaps she could have helped Asher, rather than run away depressed with her own demons from the past.
After knocking and getting invited in, Madelyn entered the tutor's office. Rachel wore long blue jeans that fitted tightly to her shapely legs and a white shirt that gave her an elegant appearance, and buttoned up to the neck, made Rachel look unusually modest.
"Hey, Maddy, how's it going? How are you feeling?" the teacher asked as the girl settled in the chair in front of her. Madelyn wondered if Rachel was asking out of courtesy or if she had noticed something in her behavior or posture that betrayed she was worried and stressed.
"It's fine, thank you," Madelyn lied with a small smile.
"I talked with Professor Brown, and she agreed to have individual lessons with you once a week. You will need to sort out the meeting dates, but she's a very nice woman. I think you will get along without a problem."
Madelyn nodded. "Thank you," she answered.
"Here's her number. Just call her and set up a meeting," Rachel said, handing over a piece of paper. Madelyn took it with a nod. She planned to call after leaving the room--or should she look for Asher to talk to him instead? Or perhaps it would be better to wait until they ran into each other during their classes. If Asher wanted to talk about his argument, the class wouldn't be the best place for that. What if he didn't want to talk to her at all? She had a perfect chance yesterday, but she had let it slip away.
"Maddy, I can tell that something is wrong." Rachel stopped the stream of Madelyn's thoughts, and the girl focused back on her teacher, briefly wondering what had given her away.
"It's nothing..."
"I'm here to help you. Not only with your class, but with any problems you encounter."
"Umm... It's not even about me," Madelyn answered hesitantly.
"About Asher?" Rachel guessed without even a second thought.
Madelyn wondered if Rachel already knew about his argument or what had happened with Zack, or if she was just guessing.
"So, yes. What happened?" Rachel asked when Madelyn didn't answer.
"It's their business..."
"Their?"
Madelyn bit her lip but then mumbled her answer. "They argued."
Rachel nodded slowly, looking thoughtful.
"Do you know what they argued about?" Madelyn asked, hoping that the teacher knew more since she didn't seem surprised about that.
"I have my speculations, but it's for Asher to choose whether he wants to tell you about it."
Madelyn nodded while biting her lip, worried again that she had lost her chance for that yesterday. That was a perfect opportunity to get closer to him and Madelyn regretted not taking it.
"Are you that concerned about it?" Rachel asked, tilting her head and observing Madelyn carefully.
"Umm... Asher is my... friend," the girl answered, although she had doubts if, after such a brief acquaintance, they were already friends. For her, Asher was already her best friend, but she wondered who she was to him in his mind.
"He was really saddened by this argument, and that was just after what happened on the square," Madelyn added.
"What happened on the square?" Rachel asked immediately.
Madelyn bit her lip, realizing that it had slipped from her mouth and that Rachel apparently didn't know anything about it yet. The girl wondered if she should tell everything to their tutor. That was Asher's problem, and he wanted to take care of that himself, perhaps he didn't want to get the teachers involved in that.
"Madelyn," Rachel said firmly and demandingly. The girl decided that Asher already had his argument on his mind, so Rachel could at least help him quickly with Zack. If she could help him at all.
"Yesterday... Zack and his two friends attacked Asher."
Rachel's demeanor changed immediately, she leaned forward, wrinkling her forehead. "What? Did something happen to him?"
Madelyn shook her head quickly. "No, no, everything's fine. Ava and Tiffany jumped in to help him. I even wanted him to go to the medics, but he insisted that he was alright."
"Good," Rachel answered, leaning back in her chair. Her face was more relaxed now, but her eyes were not focused on Madelyn anymore.
