*Author's Note* There are no intimacy scenes in this chapter.
The walk back to the camp is uneventful. I consider feeling bad about what I just did. Then I think about how they tried to put their weapons in my body.
I think I did the world a favor. You're welcome, world.
I just hope that law enforcement doesn't catch up with me. I can just tell them I'm a powerful telekinetic, but I'd rather not. Maybe I should look up self defense laws? I can't imagine I'm in the wrong, but maybe there's a clause that says self defense has to be non-lethal or something.
Arriving home, I decide to deal with whatever comes as it comes. I lay my purchases on the table, and bring out that pine diffuser again. Let's put this unfortunate memory behind me. I put in two reeds, like Aleese had, and bring it over to Sentral's box. Setting it down on the floor, I grab some of the Topaz and start spinning it. I want to get a lot of portals ready, in case I need one for whatever purpose, and also to make more of the birds portal-able.
I'm becoming rather proficient at this, if I do say so myself. I'm slotting bird #43 when Rin comes back. "Good morning, Grey. How's your day going so far? I thought I saw you leave this morning."
I look up at her, and wave her over. Since I'm sitting on the steps to Sentral's box, she sits in my lap. I wrap my arms around her. Mmm, I don't do this enough. I squeeze her a bit tighter. "What happened today... I bought some scented candles and 'diffusers.' I accidentally hired a prostitute. And I was attacked by muggers. They lost."
Rin giggles. "I imagine it was quite the surprise for them. Oh, that scent, it's quite nice. It smells like trees!"
I'm glad she didn't press about the matter. "So, now that you're off 'work,' what are you planning to do?"
She leans back against me. "Probably look for more books. If I'm going to be an alchemist, I need to learn the basics. After that, I need to learn what those who came before me did, so I can avoid the same experiments. And at some point I need to buy Identify. How about you?"
What? "Hmm, I hadn't thought that far ahead. Probably get lunch, it's getting on in the day. What's that about Identify?"
Rin, "You can buy a blessing, Identify is one of them. They call it a soul-print"
Interesting. "We can do that too. For now, should we have Bor'wa check in with her parents? The Re's as well? Do they need to check in? I guess they're married now, but still."
Rin, "The Re's are going into town to learn their trades. I taught everyone enough to make themselves understood."
She stands up and gives me a peck on the forehead, then walks past me to inside the Box. "This is a nice diffuser. I thought it was more of a rich person thing."
I laugh. "I am a man of some means, these days." I have Sentral bring the rest of the crate over with telekinesis. "I bought a few of them. Care to give them a whiff?"
She looks interested, and takes them one by one. I tell her, "Take any you like. I can just buy more."
She smiles, and selects one. A candle, rather than a diffuser. "This one then. Thank you. What's this note though?"
Me, "Ah, that's from the courtesan I mentioned. I thought it was a massage parlor, but it turned out more than that was on offer. I was surprised to meet a feokorn woman for the first time."
She looks at both sides, and reads the one in Jensin. "Do you want to go?"
I think about it. "I'm curious, I suppose. The woman herself didn't do anything to me but wrap me in her tail. Which was rather enjoyable."
She nods, then stands up. "Let me hold on to this for now. I'll call Bor'wa over, alright?"
Me, "Thanks, Rin." I touch the wall of the box. The inside is dark, but that's not an issue. I send my senses through the gem work, and quickly find the Shrine Topaz tablet. I remove a ring at random, and hang it from my necklace.
Bor'wa shows up soon after, with her red bird in tow. I send her a telepathic connection. "I'm going to connect to the island. I'll let your parents know you are okay, and you can talk to them." She nods, looking a little confused. "Anything wrong?"
Bor'wa shakes her head. *I thought we would wait longer to talk to the island again."
Huh. "You don't have to talk to them."
She smiles. "I want to, it's OK."
Alright then. I open the Topaz... and look through the perched bird's eyes. Curiously, a fire is going in the fire pit beside the perch. I don't see anyone...
I unfuse the bird's feet from the perch, and fly around. A ha. There's Bor'la. I connect to her mind, and return the bird.
¬Grey= ah excuse me# Vai'grey# I wasn't expecting to hear from you so soon# is all going well£)¬
¬it is# I have your daughter here to check in with you# the first day in Port has gone by and no disasters have struck)¬
¬hi mom= I'm doing great= I saw people eat fire= and a giant tower with lights= and so many boats= and people= it's
incredible
=)¬
¬wow= it must be amazing over there)¬
¬Bor'la# is your mate around£ perhaps Bor'wa can catch up with him as well)¬
¬he's not around right now# I'll let him know our eldest is doing just fine)¬
I nod, then remember she can't see me. ¬thanks Bor'la# I think that's all from me)¬
¬wait please)¬ "Vai'grey, can I tell mom about being weaker?"
Me, "Weaker?" Oh, because of the island's effect. "Ah, I can give you a ring for that. Sure."
She nods, then looks at the Topaz. ¬you were right mom# about the blessing# after we left everyone noticed we weren't as strong= Vai'grey says he can help with that though)¬
¬truly£ perhaps I have not been properly thankful to the Guardians# I will have to resume the rituals tonight)¬
Hmm, I think I'd heard mention of that before, but they hadn't struck me as particularly religious people. ¬the entire island seems blanketed in some sort of strength enhancing effect# as to who or why I can only speculate)¬
¬I see# Bor'wa# are you working hard£)¬
¬yes= Ringara taught me more al'ruheiban today# I can speak it a little now)¬
¬that is good# listen to the adults and learn everything you can# now# I want to talk to Vai'grey so run along)¬
¬bye=)¬ She disconnects, waves at me, and goes to Hana's cart.
¬it hasn't been the same since you left# we're still eating the Sea God meat you gifted us# but without you there to enjoy it with us it isn't as delicious)¬
Hah, surely she exaggerates. ¬I'm sure it isn't that bad# enjoy it while it lasts# I'll hunt another if it becomes needed but I don't want the tribe to be dependent on me)¬
¬no need to worry# we aren't so soft# we will be fine even without you# there's just a spark of excitement that's missing)¬ A beat passes. ¬ah yes# a woman named Lan'bi struck up a conversation with me the other day# we weren't close before# but we talked for a while about you)¬
She was... the one who got off on the idea of 'Panhumbelir,' right. ¬she was a rather devoted woman)¬
¬she is# we shared our experiences with you# and we understand you now)¬
