Steven noted that, despite knowing her for the last two years, this was the most fervent he'd seen Stephanie. "What are your biggest concerns about that plan?" Stephanie asked politely.

"I don't feel comfortable focusing upon one singular ethnicity or nationality at the expense

Pursing her lips, it was obvious that Stephanie was struggling to control her temper once more.

"I'm not sure that will go down very well..." She began speaking before Steven cut her off.

"It doesn't matter," he spoke with a mouthful of egg, "part of the agreement for the remaining men was to remain apolitical. Campaigning for a certain policy is the opposite of that."

"You didn't stay out of it when you thought the corrupted system was affecting you." Stephanie's eyes were narrow, her lips barely visible from how tight they'd gone. "Your arguments helped topple a government."

"As you said," Steven reiterated, "a corrupt government. While I sympathise with the Māori cause, I fought against fucking just rich, white women. Fucking just Māori women would be trading one extreme for the other, although I recognise the reasoning behind it."

"And yet, recognising the issue you would do nothing about it, even though it's within your ability?"

"I can't imagine I will change my mind Stephanie, but provide me with relevant information and I will at least consider it from an evidence-based perspective."

"I see," Stephanie said nothing else while finishing off her breakfast.

Lois sat between them, unnoticed by both that she looked worried, her glances split between the two of them. Having been playing the two off against each other, she realised that it was currently likely to come back and bite her on her not-inconsiderable arse, and she felt vulnerable.

Finishing off her breakfast, Stephanie stood, her body language barely hiding the effort she was putting into not lashing out.

"Thank you for breakfast Steven," her voice was expressionless, "it was, enjoyable." Placing her plate in the sink, she went to walk out of the flat. "Oh, Lois," she piped up, "when you've finished your meal, please come see me in my office. I think we need to discuss reassigning your duties."

Steven stood up, his face flushed. "Now, Stephanie," he began, "we had an agreement..."

"You're right," she interrupted, not turning to face him, "but as your chief of staff I have the final decision over the staff, and as you have made it very clear, it would be inappropriate for me to change those responsibilities now. Although I'm sure, if I thought it over, I could be convinced to change my mind. Now, don't be too long Lois."

And with that, she left, leaving Steven livid and Lois with tears falling down her face, something he didn't realise until he finally took his eyes off the doorway.

"That bloody woman," he cursed, "who the fuck does she... Oh Lois, Lois are you okay?"

She was openly weeping now, and he was completely taken aback by the change in both of his once closest friends' personalities, once so strong, but now arrogant and broken.

"Oh Steven," she cried, "I don't think you're going to forgive me."

Confusion reigned.

"The fuck are you talking about?" He asked his lover. "You didn't do this, none of this is your fault. Stephanie's just, well, she's either gone mad or she's stopped masking the crazy that was already there."

"You don't understand," Lois insisted, "this is what she's been pushing for from the very start. She's a political appointment, she wasn't here because she's a 'personal assistant', she was here to keep you in line and, and," once more, tears began to flow freely down her face, "she's been using me to help control you. I'm so sorry Steven..."

His mind was struggling to keep up.

"By, using you..." he spoke slowly, "How do you mean?"

"She," Lois gulped, "she's been using me to distract you from the bigger picture. When she knew we had a mutual attraction, she's been forcing me to convince you what she feels is best. I, "Oh I'm sorry Steven," she wailed, "but I've been sleeping with both of you..."

Steven stopped her then. "That doesn't bother me," he insisted, "I'm hardly a one-woman man, but I'm glad you've told me. Follow me." Holding her hand, he almost pulled Lois after him, leading her into the bedroom, but rather than pushing her onto the bed, he carried on into the bathroom, increasing his lovers confusion.

Rustling about under the sink, he pulled a slip of paper out from underneath before slipping it into Lois' hands.

"There's no cameras or microphones in here," he whispered, "when you get home, call that number and, you and your family, prepare to move."

"What..." Lois began, but Steven shook his head.

"You're not safe. Go, speak to Stephanie. If necessary, flat out quit, get home as fast as possible. Oh, and more than anything Lois..." his own eyes began to stream, "I love you. I love you with an intensity I've never known, and I'm so sorry, but depending on what happens next, I may not see you again, and I'm sorry." With that he kissed her, and while none of their previous moments had been lacking in passion, this had an intensity unfamiliar to them both. As their lips parted, he whispered. "Go Lois, go and be safe."

With that she left, her own face wet from tears, the slip of paper hidden, and went to face her fate.

As Steven heard the bedroom door close, he slipped under the sink once more, removing a phone he'd attached to a hidden area he'd made. Turning it on, he dialled the one number that was programmed onto it.

"Kelsy?" He spoke urgently as a voice answered. "It's Steven. I'm going to need extraction. It's gone bad here."

Epilogue

It was some hours later, barely midday, and Steven was enjoying a beer on the balcony, staring out onto the sea one last time.

No maids had been up, yet he'd made no attempt to call them. He had however made a couple more phone calls, although these had been made on his 'public' phone.

It was as a few vans began to pull up outside the apartment that a knock came on his apartment door, although no time was given for him to answer, Stephanie pushing straight through, two members of security following behind.

"I don't suppose you want to explain that?" Stephanie demanded, gesturing at the vehicles below, now emptying of members of the press, and if they weren't the press, they randomly had camera's and microphones with them, for a strange aesthetic.

"You can't do that," Stephanie growled, "as your PA, it's my responsibility..."

Walking past Stephanie and the security, who looked completely baffled, Steven made his way out of the apartment and headed towards the lift.

"How do you think you're going to get anywhere?" Stephanie demanded. "That phone is New Zealand property..."

Reaching the elevator, he pressed to go down and handed the phone directly to Stephanie.
