====================================

It wasn't getting called to the front office that was making me nervous - a year ago, maybe I would have been thrown by a surprise call to meet with a Principal or Vice Principal for an unknown reason. But I was the Lord-Sorcerer now, a Seat of Fertility, and I'd sat in the space between the Real and the Unreal and debated with beings that were older than any modern language, who could destroy a city with their power, and I was still standing.

No, what

was

giving me nerves were all the stares I was getting as I walked down the corridors of the school. Students, and even some teachers, were glancing at me like they

knew

something - and then there were the ones who were openly grimacing as I passed like I was smelling particularly potent.

Benji had split from me, heading to his locker to grab his lunch and meet up with Jay. It wasn't like he could follow me into the office so I knew he'd be waiting to hear what was up after. Aidra was waiting for me around a corner and down the hall, though, knowing I'd be following her from the same direction.

"What's going on?" she asked, clearly getting the same feeling I was.

"I don't know," I said, gesturing that we should keep walking.

"Why don't you just... y'know?" She wiggled her fingers, clearly meaning my magic.

"Feels like a waste since we'll find out in a minute anyway," I said. "And I don't like invading someone's privacy like that."

She rolled her eyes and shrugged. Maybe I should have been concerned that Aidra was the most cavalier ethically of all the girls I knew when it came to magic, and she had the power of fortune and misfortune at her fingertips.

Another couple of turns and we were near the front entrance of the school, and Lauren spotted us coming and stopped to wait before heading into the office. "Any idea what this is?" she asked as we approached, and accepted my quick kiss as we came together.

"No idea," Aidra said. "And Jerry won't hoodoo his voodoo to figure it out."

Lauren shook her head. "And were people-"

"Staring?" I filled in. "Yeah. Weirdly."

"Someone's been talking about something," my girlfriend grimaced.

"Someone's always talking about something, and you guys didn't exactly care about rumours and talking when you decided Aidra should be free to make out with me in the open," I said. "But this can't be that - we wouldn't get called to the office for some PDA."

None of us suggested that it was something good, I mentally noted.

We headed into the main office and Mrs Lawrence, the front desk secretary, pointed us to the waiting area. She, at least, didn't glower or scowl at us and considering she was generally known to be a brick wall of emotions that meant she probably had no idea why we'd been called in. Lauren sat in the seat in the far corner, and I sat next to her, and Aidra moved past us to sit next to Lauren on the other chair in the corner.

The petite goth girl leaned forward, lowering her voice. "So, how do you want to handle whatever this is?" she asked.

"Hard to say when we don't know

what

it is," Lauren murmured.

"Alright, fair," Aidra said. "I mean if it's bad and we need to 'do something.'" She put that in air quotes. "Am I doing something or you, Jerry?"

That was an interesting question. I had the greater breadth of options available to me, but it cost me fuel out of my pool of power. Aidra had fewer options, and she'd mentioned her 'pool of luck' could run low, but it also naturally refilled whereas I had to work harder for mine.

Not that I considered sex with my girlfriends and partners work.

"If it's bad enough we need to do

something

, I'll handle it," I sighed. "But let's see if it can be handled without

that

first, yeah?"

The three of us all leaned back in our seats, watching the ebb and flow of people through the main office. There were a few different secretaries, and the Guidance Counselor's office was connected to the end so they were in and out as well. A few teachers came through, two of them giving us brief glances and one doing a double-take and staring for long enough that I almost broke my own rule and tried to read his thoughts.

Eventually, Mrs. Baldinsarro, one of the Vice-Principals, came out of her office and after a brief quiet conversation with the secretary motioned to the three of us to follow her. We did, and she levelled a stern gaze at each of us as she gestured us into her office.

"Well," the thin, severe woman said. "Not exactly the return to school I was expecting today."

"What exactly is going on, Miss?" Lauren asked as she sat in one of the seats in front of the desk. Aidra and I took the others.

Mrs Baldinsarro was rail thin and wore dark grey or brown pantsuits every day, her mousey brown hair pulled back into a simple braid. The only ornamentation I'd ever seen her wearing was her thin, gold-framed glasses. She raised an eyebrow as she circled her desk and sat down in her chair imperiously. "It seems the three of you have been... busy. During the break, and now at school. I've received a report that you hosted a party, Jeremiah, and that there was a significant amount of

drinking

at said party, and possibly even drug use. The worst of the rumours even suggest some sort of sexual impropriety happened."

It was my turn to raise an eyebrow as she seemed to wait for me to respond to her, but she hadn't asked a question and I wasn't planning on feeding her with more information or the chance to call me a liar.

"Did you host a party over the break, Jeremiah?" she finally asked after a long moment, giving me a look as if she thought I was dumb enough to actually not understand she wanted me to speak.

"I don't see how any get-togethers at my house over the break would be of interest to you, Miss," I said.

Mrs Baldinsarro narrowed her eyes slightly. "And what about the rumours about rampant alcohol and drug use by students of our school in your home, hmm? That

is

of interest to the administration of the school, Mr Grant. As are the disturbing rumours that have been going around."

"I'm sorry, are you asking us about the sexual activity of teenage students?" Lauren asked. "I feel like that's

way

out of bounds."

I would have expected some sort of backtracking then - Lauren had basically played the 'You're being a creepy adult with teenagers' card. Instead, Baldinsarro smirked a little. "When the rumours are accompanied by a credible accusation, it

is

in my purview to investigate, Miss Baxley."

Fuck

. The way Baldinsarro said Lauren's last name clicked as the thing that I'd felt had been missing in my understanding of what was going on. Or at least one of the things. Baldinsarro had been in her first year as the Vice Principal of our school in Lindsey and Angie's senior year - the infamous year where half the graduating class had almost not graduated due to 'issues,' and Lindsey had been at the top of the list of seniors with marred records that had nothing to do with grades. Lauren's parents had stepped in to speak on Lindsey's behalf once or twice since Lindsey's own father was always 'away on business' back then.

Two years later, and now Lauren was in Baldinsarro's sightline for maybe the first time ever for the last name to stick.

"Maybe you should just tell us exactly what the rumours or the accusation are, Miss?" I suggested. "We've been in class all morning and haven't heard anything. I'm sure we can help clear things up."

She gave me a sour glance. "Miss Allard," she said, and her tone suggested she was pretty sure she already knew the answer. "Have you and Mr Grant here been sexually promiscuous on school grounds?"

I had full confidence in Aidra to not give anything away.

"I don't talk to pigs," Aidra said.

I was utterly unprepared for

that

response. I looked over with big eyes at the petite goth and she was smirking and glaring at Baldinsarro.

"Miss Allard, that will be detention after school for the rest of the week," Baldinsarro growled, raising her voice.

Aidra shrugged with a sneer.

"Miss Baxley, this is your only chance to come clean - have you been sexually promiscuous on school grounds?" Baldinsarro demanded.

"What exactly do you mean by 'sexually promiscuous,' Miss?" Lauren asked innocently.

"You know exactly what I mean," the Vice Principal snapped.

"Then no, I have not been sexually promiscuous on school grounds," Lauren said evenly, and without lying - definitions were a hell of a thing. Baldinsarro probably meant had we been fucking or something close to it, but the actual definition of promiscuous was having lots of casual relationships.

I

was supposed to be getting promiscuous as hell. So far Lauren had been downright monogamous... on school grounds.

"Then why am I receiving reports that say otherwise?" Baldinsarro demanded.

"Miss, do you maybe have a

specific

situation or piece of evidence?" I asked.

She turned her glare on me. A month ago I would have likely been a little taken aback by that glare - she had the authority to make my life hell, after all. Now though? She had nothing on a pissed-off Esmerelda going full Necro-Goddess.

When I didn't flinch or look away she narrowed her eyes a little more. "Mr Grant," she said. "Considering the rumours circle directly around

you

, I assumed you would be the least willing to own up to your actions. Have you been making unwanted advances on your fellow students?"

I noted the change in wording - the girls were being accused of promiscuity, I was being accused of unwanted advances. Where the fuck was this coming from?

"No," I said, letting my incredulity show. "Definitely not. Who is saying I am?"

"Jeremiah and I are dating," Lauren said. "What would even be the

point

of 'unwanted advances?'"

Baldinsarro shot Lauren a look that said something along the lines of '

Men cheat, you stupid little girl.

' The Vice Principal turned back to me though. "This isn't a court of law, Mr Grant. You don't have the right to face your accusers here."

"Can we go, then?" I asked. "We're missing most of our lunch period so you can go fishing for us to admit to things we didn't do."

She clenched her jaw for a long moment, her frustrated gaze sweeping over the three of us before she exhaled through her nose dismissively. "Watch yourselves," she said. "You're on thin ice."

There was a brief silence as she glared at us, and then Aidra frowned as she sniffed several times. "Do you guys smell... bacon?"

"That's another week of detention, Miss Allard," Baldinsarro grunted.

"Yeah, good luck with that," Aidra said, standing up and glaring right back. "You'll be getting a call from my lawyer."

"Your mother is not a lawyer," Baldinsarro rolled her eyes.

"She might as well be," Aidra said, then nodded to us. "Let's go."

Lauren and I followed Aidra out, though the little goth stopped at the door and shot one last glare back at Baldinsarro, then snorted and smirked.

"Alright, what the fuck was

that

about?" I asked once we were out of the office and back in the empty entry hall of the school.

"Rumours, obviously," Aidra said.

"No, he means calling Baldinsarro a pig like she's an evil cop or something," Lauren clarified.

"Oooh," Aidra said, drawing it out as she smirked. "Yeah, I've been doing that for years. It pisses her off every time. I'm what she would call a 'problem student,' if you would believe it."

Lauren and I glanced at each other, then back at her.

"OK, maybe it's believable," Aidra waved us off. "But yeah, every few months she has a problem with how I dress, or my hair, or the way I talk, and on and on. So I started calling her a pig, which she hates. Then she gives me detention, but if she tries to punish me too much my Mom gets involved. The weird thing is that she's never connected the fact that every time we do that little dance she's suddenly so

unlucky

for like a week afterwards."

"You cursed her with bad luck?" I asked.

"Gave her the ol' Evil Eye," Adira shrugged. "It's not gonna kill her or anything, but she's gonna have a shit week."

I wiped my face, shaking my head, and Lauren chuckled. "So then the real question is what the hell is going on with these rumours?" My girlfriend changed subjects. "Sure, we've been doing PDA, but no more than anyone else."

"Other than everyone seeing it be me with more than one girl," I pointed out.

"Even that wouldn't lead to a call to the office unless there was a catfight over it," Aidra said. "And I like your pussy way too much to fight it, bitch." She winked at Lauren.

"Feeling's mutual," Lauren grinned. Then she turned to me. "You've only had 'interactions' with Tala and Zena otherwise, right? Are we sure no one saw those?"

"Pretty sure," I said, glancing at Aidra quickly - I wasn't sure how much Lauren had told her about other girls, and I didn't like sharing Tala's status with me since she wanted it to be on the down low. "Come on, let's grab our lunches. We need to eat, and maybe we can find out more in the Caf. Benji and Jay might have heard something new."

We headed back into the school corridors but hadn't even split up to head to our various lockers before things went sideways.

"Jerry-fucking-Predator."

Mason Phillips, one of the football players, was coming down the hallway towards us, flanked by Oliver Redd. They were both big guys who spent their afternoons in the school weight room whenever they could. I wasn't entirely sure why Redd didn't play on the football team for the last two years, but the rumour was he'd been banned by the school board for something he'd done. That didn't seem to stop him from being buddies with the seniors on the team though. If the school had cartoonishly obvious bullies like in media, they would have fit the bill - things weren't like television shows though, and despite being pretty damn nerdy, Jay, Benji and I had never had issues with bullying. Mason, Redd and their friends were loud and annoying but didn't target people as far as I was aware.

"What?" I asked.

"You heard what he said," Redd grunted. "Careful, ladies. Word is this little dipstick gets handsy when it isn't wanted."

Lauren, Aidra and I all looked at each other in confusion. "What?" I asked again.

"Keep your hands to yourself, you fucking perv," Mason said, pointing his finger at me accusingly.

"OK, hold on," Lauren said. We'd come to a stop maybe ten feet from each other. "Who the fuck told you that?"

"Yeah, cause it sounds like the rumour is ass-backwards," Aidra added.

"What?" Mason grunted, now as confused as we were.

"Jerry and I are very much dating," Lauren said.

"Well... we all know

that

," Redd said. There was no way the whole school didn't know, considering what we'd been caught doing before Christmas break in the girl's locker room. How

that

incident hadn't made it to Baldinsarro I couldn't guess. "But people are saying he's cheating on you, and grabbing girls."

"Again, ass-backwards," Aidra said. Then she planted herself against my side and openly grabbed my crotch. "Girls are groping Jerry and his big fucking cock."

"With my permission," Lauren added with a smirk.

Redd and Mason both blinked rapidly and let their jaws drop open as they witnessed Aidra grabbing me through my jeans, practically jacking me off. She used her other hand to grab my hand and pull it to her ass and then patted it as if that's where it belonged.

"Holy shit," Mason mumbled.

"So, to be clear, if you see

my boyfriend

getting felt up, or giving anyone other than me some PDA - I've allowed it," Lauren said. "And I've explicitly talked with the girl involved ahead of time. Now who the hell is saying something different?"

It was kind of fun, having fierce partners - I didn't even need to really fight these stupid little social battles because Lauren was more than happy to draw a line in the sand. Between her managing the mundane crowd and Aidra managing the magical one I had a feeling I was going to be able to focus on the stuff that only I could tackle - putting my magic to use.

"Answer her, meatheads," Aidra demanded.

"Um, I dunno," Redd stammered. "People?"

"What people?" Lauren asked.

"Just... people," Mason said. "Everyone?"

"Jesus," I sighed, shaking my head. I gave Aidra's ass a little squeeze then let go and made her pull her hand from my crotch. "Why the fuck is it everywhere in the space of two periods?"

"Someone's on a whisper campaign, obviously," Lauren said, then glared back at the two jocks again. "You're being played, guys. Someone's manipulating you. Now fuck off."

Redd scowled at that, but Mason sighed. "Yeah, well... shit," he said. "Sorry for... I dunno. Come on." He nodded Redd back off down the hall, and they both turned and started stalking away.

"Tell people that shit isn't true," Aidra called after them.

"How the fuck did he manage

that?

" Redd was muttering to Mason as they turned a corner.

"Alright, now we need to hunt down whoever is starting this shit," Lauren said. "Who would want to fuck with us like this?"

"Emily," I said. "After I shot her down again. Or Wendy, though I don't know if she has the balls to try it since she knows who I am."

"Those sound like the top candidates," Aidra said. "But it could be someone else. There are more colossal cunts in this school than just them - the girls from the Purity Club can be nasty as fuck and super judgey. Same with some of the Gay-Straight Alliance club people. Both of those groups spread rumours like it's their fuckin' jobs."
