Ellie managed to dip beneath Bri's attack - a slash of searing-hot, shining metal that sprung from her fingers. Bri hadn't summoned silver before, but it seemed prudent given the circumstances.
Ellie dipped, and the other two people -
werewolves
- moved like lightning, shifting and hiding immediately behind any furniture; Bri swirled, and saw Ellie with her hands up, showing deference.
'Wait -
wait
-' Ellie said again. 'Please, we're - we're friends-'
'Bri,' Jamie said, stepping forwards. Bri was looking around the room, her heart pumping, adrenaline rushing through her whole body, eyes flitting between the three strangers. 'Violence doesn't help.'
'Told you she wouldn't help,' the male intruder said, low to the ground behind the coffee table; it wasn't really
hiding
him, but it was clear he could flip it to deflect an attack if needed, and at least gave him some cover. The combat training Catherine had taken her through told Bri that he was smart, and prepared, but not
attacking
.
So, she paused, focusing her attention to a different sect of magic. 'I'm going to read your minds,' Bri said. 'You can fight it, but please don't - if you're legit.'
They didn't respond, but Bri wasn't waiting for permission. She threw magic into her own mind, and let it expand into the room in a wash, soaking everyone.
She could feel Jamie, his familiarity tinged with caution and a general wish to
do no harm
- how sweet. She could also feel the three werewolves, strangers - or, in Ellie's case, an acquaintance-of-Jamie's - their minds reeling, scared and alert, and yet not
violent
.
They didn't want to fight.
Huh.
So, she dove deeper. She focused on the guy, the fact that he was slightly older telling her that he was
probably
the source of all of this.
He didn't resist, and as she delved into his mind, she was immediately met with information. His name was Vincent, he was thirty eight, and he'd been a werewolf for only a few months now - which was surprising. What surprised Bri even more was the vision she saw inside his head, as she focused on the source of his condition: he had been turned by the woman he loved, Paige.
Bri saw in his gut a
deep
guilt, however, for something else - something that was connected to Paige.
So Bri switched; she pulled out of Vince's head, and pushed into Paige's. It took less than seconds, but Bri saw it - the violence that was acted upon her, and the beast she contains within her now. She saw that Paige had been a werewolf for
years
, successfully staying contained with the help of Vince. Together they travelled, trying to find a cure, trying to be
safe
.
Bri saw Paige hearing of a rumour - a cave that held the secret of a cure to lycanthropy. It was a dangerous challenge to undertake, but they felt that they had no choice. They located the cave, deep in the woods, but once inside-
Paige's mind slipped to the next image - a trap, tentacle arms wrapping around them, snaking around limbs and holding them in place, together. She saw Paige and Vince, in the mouth of the cave, as the full moon rose. Paige transformed, furious and scared, and she bit into Vince's shoulder.
All of this information came with the shame and sadness Paige felt for her actions, the emotion and the memories locked together.
Then, Bri was shown something that caused a wave of Paige's guilt to flush through her.
Bri watched Vince and Paige transform, under the light of the full moon. She could
feel
the pack instincts - this push to create
more
of them. She watched them mate - animalistic rutting in the dark, a mix of beastly growls and human moans. And then she watched them hunt.
In one night, after transforming under the moon, the two werewolves raced out into the dark. They tracked Paige's sister - Ellie - to Mirbeck, and with relative ease were able to convert her with little more than a bite.
Bri pulled away, dragging her mind out of Paige and Vince at the same time. They groaned, holding their heads as the invasion subsided, but it was worth it. Bri softened in a moment, dispelling the magic that still crackled around her.
She believed them.
'Thank you,' Bri said, after a moment. 'For letting me see. I'm sorry for the reaction I had.'
Ellie pulled a face that Jamie recognised simply as discomfort. 'You don't like werewolves. Who does?'
'I've never met a werewolf before,' Bri corrected. 'I shouldn't have jumped to... I'm sorry. In fairness, you
did
break into my home.'
Vince, standing up, nodded. 'I told her that was a bad idea, but... we are desperate.'
'What do you mean?' Bri asked.
Paige stepped forwards, putting herself between Bri and her husband and sister. 'For years, Vince kept me safe. Or, kept others safe
from
me. But after we were trapped, and I turned him... last month, we came here and turned my baby sister. Making us a pack of three. Next month, who knows? My parents?
His
siblings? The instinct is undeniable, and I won't accept this. We need to get into that cave, and get the cure.'
'Cave?' Jamie asked. 'The one you got stuck in?'
Bri looked at him. 'You saw that?'
'I saw what you saw,' he shrugged. 'We're linked.'
'Sure,' she said, shaking that off. 'So - the cave. You know where it is?'
Paige nodded. 'We can take you there - but we need the Witch of Mirbeck to help us. We ask you, as the protector of this town, to save it.'
Bri steeled a little. 'From what?'
'From us.'
~o~O~o~
'So, how did you know to come here?' Jamie asked Ellie as they stood together by the kitchen top, kettle heating up as they prepared some caffeinated drinks for everyone. It was still mid-morning, as frankly Jamie could tell that Bri was a little stunned by this whole affair. For his part, Jamie had kind of started to get used to unexpected, impossible things just sort of
happening
, while Bri still seemed attached to figuring out the logic behind them. It was probably what made her a good Witch, and him a good Familiar.
'The land told us,' Ellie shrugged, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. She saw the blank look on Jamie's face, though, and kindly explained a little. 'So, magic-effected beasts and monsters, like werewolves, we have a sort of
instinct
about certain things, you know? Like, Vince and Paige got the pact instinct going, came and turned me. Well, magic has a sort of...
pull
to it. We don't do your typical magic, but in our own way I guess you could call it a spell - we looked for help, and the land led us to a glade out near the town walls. There, we felt magic, and picked up your scent, so we followed it. To you guys.'
