Ch. 70
Evan was giddy as his friends oohed and aahed over his new vehicle. He felt a sense of pride in owning the vehicle, even if he didn't have a hand in purchasing it himself. It was like his status had been raised a level. At least, that was how it felt to him. He was having a hard time believing it was actually his. But he figured a good long test drive would help settle things into place.
"Alright," he said to the group. "Anyone that wants to come along, hop in. I'm going to take a trip around town."
"Ooh, yes, I want in!" Clara said.
She started heading towards the back seat. The others also expressed their desire to go, so they started to pick out seats as well. However, there was a problem. There was only one front seat, but two people were determined to make it their own.
"Hey, I called it first!" Lia said. "Get in the back!"
"No way! I grabbed the handle first! It's mine!" Laia said.
"That's not a rule!"
"Yes huh!"
"You're too small to sit up front anyway. Children are safer in the back."
"YOU'RE THE SAME SIZE AS ME!"
Everyone besides the sisters had stopped what they were doing to watch the fight. Nobody looked all that surprised. Even Evan, who had only known the twins for a short while, had grown accustomed to their sibling feuds. They all knew better than to get in the middle of it. They always worked things out between themselves before long anyway.
"This is just like when we would go out with mom when we were little!" Laia said. "You always pushed me out of the way!"
"It's what big sisters do! They get to go first because they're oldest!"
"You aren't older! Stop using that as an excuse!
"Fine, how about this," Lia said, suddenly calming down and smiling. "Whoever is closest to Evan should sit up front. He'd probably like that best, right?"
"Wha- huh?"
"Let's think... between the two of us, who has gotten the
closest
to Evan. Hmm."
"...!"
Laia's face began heat up as she realized what Lia was saying. She almost started shaking from anger as she realized her sister was trying to throw her night with Evan in her face again.
"Obviously, it would be me, right?" Lia said with a big grin. "Maybe next time, sis."
Lia patted her sister on the shoulder and used the distraction as an opportunity to quickly climb into the front seat. Laia looked so upset that Evan was thinking about actually intervening. However, before he could do anything, Laia ended up settling the matter herself.
"Evan!" Laia shouted.
"Y-yeah?"
"I want to have my date now," she said.
"Ok?"
"I want to take a drive with you around town," she said. "Alone."
"So... just us two then?"
"That's right."
"Ok," Evan said. "Sorry guys, but is it alright if Laia and I have this one to ourselves?"
"Yeah, it's fine," Clara said graciously.
Nobody else objected as they piled out of the car. Even Lia seemed to accept her defeat this time as she exited the front seat and gave up her fight with her sister.
"Hmph. You can have it this time, I guess."
Lia walked past her sister back towards the dorm with the others. Before they knew it, Laia and Evan were alone standing next to Evan's new Bronco.
"Alright," he said. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah! Let's do it."
Evan drove out of the parking lot and smoothly started his way around campus. The brand-new Bronco handled very well. It was a much different experience than the old used cars he learned to drive on back home. Laia seemed to like it as well.
"This is so cool," she said while looking all over the interior. "I can't believe they gave this to you."
"I know, right? But I'm not going to complain."
"Next time, try to get one for me too."
"Ha! I'll see what I can do," he said. "So, where should we go?"
"Ummm... no idea?"
"Well, this is your date. We can go wherever you want."
"I hadn't really planned this. It just kinda happened," she said looking embarrassed.
Evan just chuckled in response. He knew she made the decision on the fly simply as a way to win the argument with her sister, but he thought it was fine. He had been waiting for her to approach him with a date for a while now, and he had started to wonder if she had gotten cold feet. This wasn't exactly how he imagined it would play out, but he was happy to be moving forward with this competition he found himself in.
He enjoyed his time with the girls, but it was making him anxious the more he thought about them using him to compete with each other. He mostly worried that he wouldn't live up to their expectations. The sooner it was all in the past, the better, as far as he was concerned.
They drove around campus aimlessly before they started exploring the rest of town. There were plenty of sights for Evan to take in for the first time, but he imagined it was all old hat for Laia. He was wracking his brain for activities they could do with each other while they were out, but he still had a hard time coming up with date ideas better than dinner and a movie. The morning had flown by with all the activity, so it was a little after noon by the time they started to approach the commercial district. It wasn't late enough for dinner, but his stomach had started letting him know that it was past time for lunch.
"Want to get something to eat?" he said. "I'm pretty hungry."
"Yeah, me too."
"Where would you like to go?"
"Ummm... oh! I know!"
Laia got excited and started directing him on where to go. After a few minutes, they arrived at a small diner. A breakfast diner, to be exact.
"I loooove breakfast food! But Lia hates it, so I never get to eat here," she said. "Is it ok?"
"It's fine with me," Evan said.
Over the next hour, Evan watched Laia put away more pancakes than he would have thought humanly possible. It was like there was a bottomless pit where every hobbit's stomach was located. Or was it only the twins? Evan had some biscuits and gravy with a side of a couple of pancakes as well. It was all very tasty.
"Is that all you're having!?"
"I'm stuffed!" Evan said. "You know I can't eat as much as you."
"Did you like it?"
"Oh yeah," he said. "It was delicious."
"Isn't it!?" she said. "I wish I could eat here all the time."
"Well, anytime you need to get your fix, let me know. We can come over, just the two of us."
"Deal!"
It was still early afternoon by the time the two exited the diner holding their bellies. While the lunch had been fun, it hadn't lasted all that long. Evan felt he still owed something more to Laia since this was her special date event. He used most of the lunch to think about what they could do, and he had come up with one decent idea.
"Hey, is there anything else you don't get to do because of your sister?" he said. "Like, a place like this diner, that she doesn't like, but you always wanted to go to? If there is, we could do more of that stuff."
"That's a great idea! Yeah, let me think."
Evan waited for a few minutes, but Laia said nothing. He glanced over at her and noticed she looked a lot sadder than she had when they were at the diner. He had no idea what could have changed since then, but he at least could tell that she was having trouble thinking of activities to do.
