Ch. 50

The rest of the week went by quickly for Evan. His time was occupied by working on his research project, attempting to avoid his night terrors, and his magic vision training. The paper was coming along nicely. He had most of it done, and he was really just trying to find a way to wrap it up. As for the nightmares, they still came, but it wasn't a nightly event. It seemed that he only had a bad night when something ruined his mood during the day. Ms. May's explanation about how his mental state played a big factor in when his nightmare manifested turned out to be accurate. He did his best to meditate and focus on good thoughts before bed, and it was having decent results. However, there had been less progress with his magic vision training.

Evan had managed to see a very faint glow while looking at the artifacts in the hidden library. It was barely noticeable, but it was enough to let him know his method was on the right track. However, it was clear he was still missing a final piece somewhere. He had been reading any book he could find that might have a clue to completing basic spells, and he felt he had found the source of his troubles.

From what he could tell, he needed to more fully integrate his desired function into his intent. Right now, he was layering his desired function onto his base intent, and it only provided a miniscule amount of power. He needed to meld the function into his base intent used to activate his magic so they seamlessly worked as one. One mental image from the get-go instead of two put on top of each other. Something like that. The issue was that he had no real blueprint for doing this, and the book only reiterated that this process was different for each magician. He had spent much of the last week trying a number of different ideas.

Evan was lying in bed Friday night when he came up with a new idea to try. His intent when cycling his magic was to protect and shield what he held dear. Well, what if all he needed to strengthen his spell was to focus on how the desired effect would achieve that basic goal? He was exhausted and ready for sleep by that time, so he decided to give it a try on Saturday. There was another search expedition planned, so he figured he would be able to practice in the air like last time.

There was an unpleasant wind blowing Saturday morning, and the sun was hidden behind clouds. The forecast did not call for rain though, so the search was allowed to continue. He arrived at the normal meetup spot at the security force headquarters to find that not everyone was there this time. The only first year students present were Mary, Emersyn, and Evan. Aquila showed up to speak to their group shortly after he arrived.

"I'm sure you've noticed Alex isn't here today," she said. "She wasn't feeling well this morning, so she opted to stay in."

"Mary," she continued. "We'll need to have you assist a ground unit."

"Ok, fine," Mary said.

"Alright, I'll let you know who you're assigned to before we head out."

Aquila was about to walk away when Mary called out to her.

"Hey, wait!" she said. "What if the three of us went out as a group together? That should be ok, right?"

Aquila thought to herself for a moment before responding.

"That would probably work," she said. "What do you two think?"

"I should be able to shield us all," Evan said shrugging. "But I'll leave it up to Emersyn."

They all looked at the quiet devil girl to see what she had to say on the arrangement. Evan thought she probably wouldn't want to spend the day with Mary, but he wanted to give her a chance to say so for herself. However, that's not how things ended up going.

"Should be fine," Emersyn said.

"Ok," Aquila said. "You three stick together and comb the skies like usual. Be sure not to travel too far from the rest of the group, got it?"

The three first years nodded in agreement and Aquila left to do her announcements. They were told the section of the forest directly south of the town was that day's search zone. Aquila told them recent tracks had been sighted indicating Derek had gone in this direction. As soon as she finished speaking, the gathering headed south. They reached the edge of the forest, and the first issue of the day arose.

"Why don't you fly with me today, Evan?" Mary said as Evan was getting into position with Emersyn.

"Oh, uhh, I thought you would probably want to be free to fly alone?"

"Nah, it's cool," she said. "I'd like to try flying with you since it's our first time on a team together."

"..."

Evan looked at Emersyn, but she was just standing by silently watching.

"Well... I don't think it would be fair for one person to have to carry me all day," he said. "How about Emersyn carries me this morning, and I'll fly with you after lunch."

"Fine," she said, accepting it easily enough.

She unfurled her wings and readied to take off.

"Just make sure you don't drop him," she said to Emersyn. "I'll be watching in case I have to save him from your clumsiness."

She flew off after that remark leaving the two of them alone at the edge of the forest. Evan was not looking forward to a day mediating between these two.

"Don't let her bother you," he said. "She's just talking shit."

Emersyn nodded and put her arms around his chest. They soon caught up with Mary in the air and started towards their assigned search zone. Evan began practicing his magic vision, but the cold air was making it difficult to concentrate. It also didn't help that Mary kept finding ways to distract him.

It was clear she wasn't taking the search very seriously. Shortly after they took to the air, she started showing off her flying skills. Mary started zooming around Emersyn at top speed and laughing at Emersyn as if she were slow. She also rolled over and flew upside down. She did this while flying below Emersyn, so Evan had no choice but to look right at her. He doubted she did this with Alex. It was obviously for his benefit.

After a while, the air tricks weren't enough for her. She started to pester Evan in different ways, making it even more difficult for him to concentrate. He was working on his training when he felt something soft tickle his nose. He brushed it away only to discover it was actually the tip of Mary's wing. She had glided in from behind and reached out to tickle him.

"Knock it off," he said scratching his nose.

Mary just giggled and flew away again.

They did not manage to find any signs of Derek that morning. They came across a small clearing and decided to land since it was close to noon. Evan was hungry, but he was wary about the prospect of flying with Mary. He didn't know that he trusted her to be serious about the search. She most likely just planned to use the time to get closer to him. He paled thinking about what she might do if he wasn't as open to her advances as she wanted him to be while they were in the air together. Falling from the sky was not on his list of preferred ways to die.

There hadn't been any convenient places to sit in the small clearing they landed in, so they were eating lunch on the ground. Fortunately, Evan had brought a thin blanket along just in case something like this happened. The three sat huddled up on the blanket as they ate. Evan thought it looked like they were having a nice picnic in the countryside. Evan sat in between the two girls. He tried to engage them both in conversation, but Mary seemed determined to keep him focused on her.

"What do you have?" Mary said.

"A turkey sub from the mini-mart," he said.

"Is that all? Want one of my brownies? My mom made them for me. They're delish."

"Oh, sure," he said. "Thanks."

He took a bite, and it was indeed delicious.

"This is great!" he said. "Emersyn, you should have one."

"Oh, I only brought two..." Mary said.

"That's ok, here," he said splitting his in half. "You can have some of mine."

"Thanks," Emersyn said.

Emersyn smiled as she nibbled on the brownie. It looked like she was taking small bites to make it last. Evan thought it was cute. Did she have a sweet tooth? Mary, on the other hand, didn't care for it.

"It's not polite to take people's food," she said.

"It's fine," Evan said. "I wanted to share."

"You're, like, such a nice person," Mary said, seemingly amazed at his selfless act. "I guess it's good to let the riffraff experience something good at least once in their lives."

He thought it was ridiculous that she continued to see only the good in him while seeing nothing but bad in Emersyn. She had managed to bottle her nastiness towards Emersyn most of the morning, but she finally slipped and let out an insult. Evan couldn't just let it pass.

"Hey," he said. "That's not cool. She's not riffraff."

"Oh, I forget sometimes how little you know," Mary said. "I don't know what she's been telling you when you're alone together, but she is just using you to get popular. That's all her kind knows how to do. Use people."

Evan was about to defend Emersyn, but surprisingly, she beat him to the punch.

"At least I don't have to use store bought brownies to get boys to talk to me," she said.

Evan's eyes opened wide and bounced between the two girls. Mary's mouth was open wide as well, and her face was red. It looked like Emersyn had hit a bullseye regarding the origin of the brownie. Evan didn't care where the brownie came from, it was delicious either way. But it was pretty funny to think she felt the need to lie about where it came from.

"Better than spreading my legs for anything that moves like a succubus bitch in heat," Mary said. "We all know that's why they bothered bringing you lot to town in the first place. They were too tired of explaining things to humans that caught demon whores fucking wild animals."

"That's funny," Emersyn said. "Wasn't it your aunt that got caught getting a little too close to the family dog?"

Evan actually choked on his sandwich. He coughed and took a few swigs of water to recover. Was that really true!? There

was

a severe shortage of men in town... Whether or not it was true, it had the desired effect. Evan didn't want the two to fight, but he was proud of Emersyn for standing up for herself. To his knowledge, it was the first time she had. And Mary did not like the new development. She was steaming mad.

"Fucking cunt!" Mary said, getting to her feet.

Evan and Emersyn rose reflexively, and Evan stood between the girls to act as a barrier.

"That's enough, guys," Evan said. "Let's calm down."

Mary took a few big breaths, but she didn't say anything. He thought she might let it go, but then she saw Emersyn smiling behind Evan's back. It was like she couldn't accept Emersyn getting the best of her, even once.

"I'm surprised you would defend her after what you told me the other day," Mary said.

Evan cocked his head in confusion having no idea what she was talking about.

"Oh yeah," Mary said to Emersyn. "Evan told me all about flying with you on the last two searches. He said he was scared at first to be with a devil. But then he just thought you were, like, pathetic."

"What?" Evan said. "I didn't say that!"

"..."

"We laughed a lot because it's so true!" Mary said. "Big bad devil bitch, scourge of the underworld. But in reality, you're just a fucking weirdo that can't even get a friend."

"That's a lie, Emersyn," Evan said.

But Mary didn't stop pressing. She could see that Emersyn's face had fallen once she started talking about Evan bad mouthing her. She didn't care if it was true or not. She wanted to hurt Emersyn, and she would use anything she could to do so.

"He laughed the hardest when he talked about your stories," Mary said. "He couldn't believe an adult was still reading such childish things. He seriously asked if you were mentally handicapped! I had to explain that you were always fucking weird like that. The biggest loser in town."

Before Evan could refute anything further, Emersyn turned and jumped into the air. He called out to her, but she was soaring away in a flash. Like most lifelong bullies, Mary knew best how to wound her targets. Apparently, what she said hit a sore spot and caused Emersyn's newly found courage to dissolve. Mary was laughing like it was the funniest thing in the world.

"The fuck!" Evan said. "Why did you do that!?"

"Oh, calm down," Mary said. "We don't need her anyway. The search will be much more fun with just the two of us."

"No," Evan said. "We're going after her right now, and you're going to apologize!"

"Apologize!? She should apologize to me! Did you hear what she said?"

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Evan said causing Mary's jaw to drop.

"What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you!?" she said balling up her fists. "I've been doing everything I can to get you to spend time with me! And all you want to do is talk to that stupid witch! I even sent you those pictures!"

"I didn't ask for those fucking pictures," Evan said. "I deleted them the day I got them. Don't send me that shit anymore. Actually, don't fucking talk to me anymore after this. I'm done with your shit!"

"Wha- huh?"

"Come on," Evan said, gathering the blanket on the ground. "Let's go find Emersyn before she gets too far."

"Screw you!" she said. "You can go find your devil skank on your own!"

Evan watched silently as Mary took to the sky and soared away back in the direction of town. He watched until she disappeared into the distance. She was definitely not coming back, and he didn't care. Evan finished putting the blanket back into his backpack and looked around the area. He was in a clearing with nothing but trees surrounding him. Panic started to set in as he realized the situation. Both of his partners had abandoned him, and he was now left deep in the forest, completely alone.

Ch. 51

"Alright, calm down," Evan said to himself.

He took a deep breath and took stock of the situation. He was alone in a potentially dangerous area, but he wasn't helpless. Evan could use his shield if he got into trouble, but more importantly, he had the GPS trigger. If he really needed to, he could press the button and bring every member of the search team to him. He didn't want to halt the search just for his sake, but it was still comforting to know he had it available.

To get out of this without using the trigger, he would have to get at least one of his teammates back. He could have also tried calling Aquila on her phone, but he didn't want to get Emersyn in trouble for leaving him alone if he could help it. Evan did pull out his phone and try to call Emersyn, but there was no answer.

"Damn it."

There was no way he was going after Mary, so his only choice was to locate Emersyn. Mary had flown off back towards town, but Emersyn had gone deeper into the forest. Where could she have gone? There wasn't anything meaningful out there except more trees. Was she just flying around randomly?

If he couldn't figure out her destination, he might as well just stay put in the clearing and hope someone came back eventually. There was no sense in wandering the forest aimlessly. He tried to think about the surrounding area he had seen when they arrived there. That's when he remembered something helpful.

When they flew in, Evan had noticed there was a big hill nearby. It was a memorable sight due to the rising hill abruptly ending at a steep cliff. The light brown cliff face stood out against the sea of green. There were several old, tall trees at the apex of the cliff. Those trees stood high above all others in the area. It was just the type of place Emersyn liked to visit, especially when she was upset.

He thought the probability that she would be attracted to the top of that cliff was high. But was he really confident enough to risk the journey? It was hard to gauge the distance from the air, but it had to be at least five hundred yards. He thought about it for a few minutes before deciding to give it a go. The more he thought about it, the more convinced he was that she would be there. Evan could see the tops of the tall trees in the distance, which gave him confidence in not getting lost. But it was the reassurance of the GPS trigger that gave him the final boost to take the risk. He secured his things and began his hike through the woods.

There were a ton of trees, but the undergrowth was not very thick, so it wasn't too hard to navigate. He did lose sight of the tall trees often, but he knew he would get to where he needed to go if he kept heading uphill. The real struggle was dealing with his quickly tiring legs. Uphill hiking was very draining for his untrained legs. However, he persevered and kept going. It was about an hour of steady hiking before the top of the hill came into sight before him.

Evan was covered in sweat despite the cool air. He walked up to the edge of the cliff and looked down. It was very steep, and he backed away quickly before vertigo could set in. He turned and looked up at the top of the old trees. They were really quite impressive. They had to be some of the oldest trees in the forest. He scanned their branches for signs of his friend, but he couldn't see much through the leaves.

"Emersyn!" he yelled. "Are you there!?"

He listened for a few moments, but he was met with only the sound of the wind.

"Emersyn, it's Evan!" he tried once more. "Please come down!"

Nothing happened again, and Evan started to think his trek had been for naught. But just as he was giving up hope, there was a rustling near the top of the tree line. A dark shape shot out of the branches and gently landed in front of him by the cliff. Evan wondered if anyone had ever been so happy to see a devil appear in front of them before.

"Emersyn!" he said. "I'm so glad I found you. Are you ok?"

"Yes," she said. "Where's Mary?"

"She left me alone in that clearing."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I think she went back to town."

"Oh."

"Hey," he said. "What she said back there. That wasn't true."

"..."

"She was just trying to hurt you," he said. "I never said anything like that about you."

Emersyn nodded.

"Why did she leave you alone?"

"I told her to fuck off and never talk to me again," he said. "Guess she didn't like that."

Emersyn laughed lightly.

"I thought you two would be doing the search together now," she said.

"No way," he said shaking his head. "You're my friend, Emersyn. I can't just ignore what she did. I meant what I said. I don't want anything to do with her."

"Thank you," she said showing a small smile.

"I thought it was great that you stood up to her," he said. "Was funny too."

"Yeah," she said lightly laughing again. "It felt pretty good."

"Keep it up," he said. "Next time she tries to start shit, shut her down again."

"I'll try," she said. "But... she always knows just what to say to make me feel bad."

"She's a bully," he said. "She won't stop as long as she keeps getting her way. If you ever need help, come get me. We'll put her in her place together."

"Really?"

Evan nodded.

"I'm tired of these stupid prejudices," he said. "Something needs to change."

"But... how?"

"No idea," he said. "But too many people act like it's normal around here. If only I could, like, zap them all with a spell and get rid of all the bullshit."

"That would be convenient."

"Oh yeah," he said. "I don't think I'm quite at that level, though. Still, it would be nice to be able to change people so easily. Maybe a little unethical, but meh. It's for the greater good!"

They shared a laugh. Evan was happy to see Emersyn's mood recovering. It looked like she was going to be alright.
