"Uhm..." Asuka looked at you closely, eying you from head to toe. You sighed deeply, fanning yourself as you looked out at the seemingly endless sets of overgrown steps. Moss and vines covered them and some steps were raised by roots, as well.

"What're we out here for?"

"Auntie wants to try and regain a hold on the old temple. She seems to have come to the conclusion that you can be of great help."

"Ahh! So that's why these side-characters are here." You looked back over your shoulder at Asuka's Aunt and her sister, whom you have not gotten acquainted with.

"Did you just... Call me a side character?" Asuka's sister asked.

"You haven't even been named, yet, so you're a side character." You slapped the back of your neck as you felt a bug land on it.

"This outfit barely does anything for me." You muttered as the Aunt and Asuka's Sister exchanged a look.

"About that... Who told you to wear this outfit?" Asuka asked hesitantly.

"Fionna." You explained.

"She told me these clothes are designed for exploring." You were wearing tan shorts, white socks that reached up to your knees and beige shoes. Over your chest you had a button-up tan shirt and you had a safari hat over your short, dark hair.

"I am a veteran explor-" You stopped and turned suddenly as you heard a shutter sound. You learned so far that it was the sound made when taking pictures.

"No pictures!" You scolded. It was Asuka's sister that held her phone like a camera.

"Cute. Is he really a demon?" The sister asked, looking at Asuka and her Aunt. She levelled her gaze on you last.

"My name is Maoka, by the way."

"He is." Mishiko assured her.

"My familiars finally came back under my influence and implied when I asked them that he has some connection to Fox spirits. It makes sense why he was able to cow them at that time. To think, he could have had us at his mercy but he left instead."

"You're lucky I'm so nice." You said to them.

`Lucky I'm in your head, is more like it.` Fin teased.

`Shush. What do you think about this? There's a Fox spirit here, which is apparently something close to you.`

`Not necessarily. I could command those little spirits because my aura is intimidating and familiar. Foxes are an extremely old species... We can't be certain when or who-`

`No... No... It kinda sounds like they know you personally. Kinda sounds like they're a specific person that really doesn't like you. Maybe we should tell em that we don't actually have any influence here.`

`You're jumping to conclusions... Play it safe.`

You began ascending the steps. "The barrier here got broken?"

"Usurped." Michiko stated, following close behind. She was in her shrine maiden garb while the other two girls were dressed a bit more reasonably for the time and place.

"When the spirit felt a certain disturbance many years ago she broke free and took control of the barrier. The shikigami and spirits within the temple turned against us and drove us out... I was a girl at the time. I managed to escape with three Shikigami that remained loyal and restarted the temple elsewhere."

"Goodness, I wonder what happened."

`I died.` Fin stated.

`I'm pretending to not know...` You rebuked quickly.

"I suspect that if you broke through our barrier easily enough, this one should also pose no problem. As it stands, I've never been able to make it through with shikigami or other spirits intact."

"That's a nice theory..." You were starting to lose your breath.

"Did... You put this many steps on purpose? Is this a joke?"

"Yes. It is purposeful." Michiko smiled brightly.

"It's symbolic and meaningful, I promise."

"Great." You removed your safari had and fanned yourself with it as you climbed each step, slowing significantly near the top. You fell forward once you hit the last step and panted.

"Uuugh.. Where's the barrier?"

"You fell through it." Michiko observed.

You dragged yourself up and stared at the giant red archway you had passed through, then the few more that were placed over a walkway leading into the courtyard. The temple was definitely abandoned. Japanese style buildings had plants growing up through the stilted walkways of the different buildings.

"It's wild that there's no graffiti." Maoka commented.

"I think she's still protecting this place, but for herself, instead of the priestesses."

"Heartening, really, but this creature is dangerous. She consumed the souls of your forebears. This place was supposed to be your home." Michiko advised.

"Waaah, wah. Where's the spirits?" You sat up and tried to feel anything unusual.

"I doubt any would meet us out here during the day. That's why we came at this time. The spirits are still active, but the Fox should not be as active during the day. We feel it now as a mild, unsettling feeling..." She stepped through the broken barrier and smiled, noting that her spirits were remaining with her.

"Excellent. This might be doable."

You tilted your head back to eye the dubious milf. "Who says I'm gonna take your side?"

"I spent all my Djir points..." Asuka whispered to you.

"You do know that doesn't mean shit, right?"

"It does... I take them as your word." Asuka explained with an innocent smile.

"Fuck." You slumped, hanging your head for a moment before suddenly hopping up and brushing yourself off.

"I caught my breath. Onward." You began walking into the courtyard, through the remaining arches. Behind you, you heard Michiko quietly mutter to Maoka and Asuka.

"See how he unconsciously breaks each barrier? He doesn't even know what he's doing. What a useful, clumsy buffoon."

"Grr..." You bristled at that remark. The moment you crossed through the last archway you stepped right into a darkened hall. In the back there was a huge statue of a woman with nine tails done in bronze like a buddha. At the foot of the statue, sitting in a spotlight with red string adorned with white talismans sat a delicate, familiar-looking figure wearing a robe that hung halfway down her cleavage, only obscuring her nipples, really. Her hair was long and full. Black with reddish highlights and her ears were tall with red tips and fluffy white tufts. You recognised her mostly because it was like looking at a little female simulacrum of someone who was all too familiar to you.

"Huh..." Your voice echoed unexpectedly loud in the space. The girl stirred, her ears twitching and her tail coming to life behind her to wag back and forth slowly.

"Welcome..." She spoke. Her arms were held out to either side of her, wrapped with the red string. It also circled her neck and most of her body, shooting out at different angles.

"You feel familiar."

"It's me, Djir."

"Wow. What are the odds?" She looked up. Her eyes were red with a gold ring around them. She licked across her lips sensually, then rubbed her chin over her shoulder.

"Finally, someone that can scratch my nose. Come closer."

`That's...` Fin trailed off.

`Of course it is.` You rolled your eyes, walking closer.

`You knew it would be.`

`Can I talk?`

`Think that's a good idea?`

"He can talk." Inari spat coldly.

"Whatever he has to say should be interesting."

"He's pretty sorry." You offered earnestly.

"I know." She shrugged.

"Let me out of here and we can talk more."

`Let her out.` Fin asked insistently.

You lifted a brow, standing right in front of her. "Is that a good idea?"

She cocked her head and stared at you. "For whom?"

You sighed, pacing back and forth in front of her. Her eyes followed you.

"There's a sweet girl out there that spent every last one of her Djir Points to ask me to help her family with this."

Inari grinned, baring sharp, pearl-white fangs. "Djir points?"

"Mhmm.."

"I have at least a couple."

"How do you figure?" You stared at her curiously.

"Remember when I kept from dad the fact that-" As she began to speak you dropped down quickly, covering her mouth with your hand.

"Okay! Pause!" She bit your hand hard.

"Ow! Fuck!" You rang your hand out. You were standing in the courtyard. It was still light out.

"Why are you shouting?" Asuka asked.

`Djir? What is she referring to?` Fin questioned.

"N-nothing!" you offered to both at once. You looked down at your hand, noticing a set of clean bite marks that just barely drew blood.

"Shit... hurt like hell."

"Auntie says that she wants you around to perform a ritual in front of the Buddha statue to strengthen the talismans binding the Fox..."

"Buddha? It's not a fox?"

"No. It's a bronze buddha." Asuka asserted.

"Hmm..."

`Djir, let her out. It's my girl.`

`I don't think she has great intentions. We should probably wait.` You argued.

`Djir... She's my daughter. You need to release her. I"ll be upset if you keep her restrained for longer than she needs to be.`

`I don't think you're thinking clearly, right now.` You shook your head.

`But, I am on the fence...` Your cheeks flushed. She had some dirt on you. Fin was going to be double upset. Inari was clever. A real fox.
