This is chapter 4 of the series Dorian the Everlasting. I would strongly recommend that you read the previous chapters to enjoy the story fully. This is the first series I am publishing, and this version of chapter 4 is an edit after some feedback on certain issues.
The series is about a noble-born man who receives immortality and becomes a great leader in a culture with Polyamory as a cultural and legal norm in a fantasy medieval setting. The number of wives and concubines is associated with and expected for certain levels of nobility, and much of that will be explored in this chapter. This series will have some narrative elements to help with the world-building and hopefully add to the erotic moments.
Special thanks to
Skiingphotog
for proofreading this chapter.
As I am trying harder to ensure the story remains aligned with the world I am trying to create, as well as the focus on improving writing and grammar quality, the next chapters will take a little longer. But I am fully committed to taking this series as far as possible.
I hope you enjoy it!
Chapter 4 - A Matter of Prestige
In Del'Mari culture, concubines were regarded as legitimate members of a lord's household, holding a status that fell between that of a lower-ranked wife and the highest-ranking servant. Their primary duty was to fulfill the carnal desires of their lord. Any children born from these unions were considered legitimate but could only inherit if the children of the lord's wives were no longer eligible. By both tradition and expectation, concubines resided in a separate dwelling within the lord's holdfast.
Legally, concubines could come from any level of the peerage or commoner class. However, incorporating the adult sons or daughters of nobility into a lord's harem brought added prestige due to their higher status. Concubines often served as a form of political currency, with their status and qualities determining the extent to which they could enhance a lord's influence. By offering a concubine, a lord could gain prestige, secure favor, or strengthen diplomatic relations.
For example, if you already had two ducal daughters as wives and sought to take another ducal daughter as a concubine, she would need to be either the child of a concubine herself or the offspring of one of the secondary wives. This distinction ensured the hierarchy of the household remained intact, preserving the elevated status of the primary wives while still allowing noble blood to flow through the ranks of concubinage.
A concubine applicant's ranking was based first on the titles of their
households
, for example
:
Duke, Earl, Baron etc. The second factor was their birth ranking; were they the first, second, third born, etc?
Consequently
to which spouse
were they born -
the first wife, second
,
or third etc. If the head of the household was a woman then this was not taken into consideration, as it would be unclear who the child's father could be. And finally, many lords also considered age important.
In the case of my household, my primary spouse was Arla, the firstborn of the third wife of the late Duke Travian, and my second spouse, Cylvia, the firstborn of his fourth wife. According to custom, any concubine I sought would need to hold a lower rank than Cylvia, the firstborn of a duke's fourth wife. However, because Cylvia is also the heir to Duke Travian's lands and title, her status is elevated to that of a duke's firstborn child. This made even the second-born daughters of a duke culturally acceptable as potential concubines. Whether a duke would allow such an arrangement, however, is another matter entirely.
Now, as the Earl of the most prosperous and prized lands within the Tur'Rok Valley Duchy, I was expected to have at least three wives and four concubines. Yet, with the growing troubles plaguing the duchy, such expectations were far from my mind. However, with my appointment as Duke Regent, the pressure to meet these cultural and hierarchical demands only intensified.
Fortunately my two pregnant wives took it upon themselves to address the matter. By the third week of our stay at Reapers Rock they had already selected half a dozen candidates and invited them to attend the Partook, or Bedding Feastβa unique cultural event where lords or ladies invite prospective concubines to demonstrate their suitability for joining the household.
My time was scarce due to
the rising civil unrest and the ongoing efforts to rebuild the region. Ever resourceful, Arla, the epitome of a dutiful wife, devised a way to get my undivided attention. She knew the only time I would sit down and seriously consider the candidates was if she had my cock in her mouth. I had to admit
...
it was an effective strategy. Amidst the overwhelming pleasure I managed to make note of the women who would attend the feast, aided by my wife's relentless devotion to her task.
