--- Day 82 ---
Aurelia lay on the ground, dried tears caking her cheeks.
Why is this happening... Why did I let this happen...
The last blessing from her god had been shattered, and by her own hand too. Any evidence of the god she once followed had finally disappeared.
Why did I let this happen...
The thought repeated in her head.
Aurelia clasped her arms together and pulled her knees to her chest. She curled up on the ground, trying to stave off the chilly air of the void. Her magic should nullify anything more than a chilly breeze, but the air felt so, so cold...
Suddenly, an out-of-tune humming echoed out of the void.
Aurelia grimaced at the familiar sound. She tried to ignore it, gritting her teeth and digging her nails into her palm, but the humming only grew closer.
Eventually, the noise came to a stop behind her. Silence filled its place, as if the air held its breath.
"What do you want," Aurelia finally spoke up.
"I thought you might be asleep, so I didn't want to wake you, haha," an awkward laugh came from outside her line of sight.
Aurelia let the silence hang, then repeated her question. "What do you want?"
The slithering of scales came closer and Aurelia reflexively grimaced. Then, a warm softness enveloped her shoulders as a blanket was laid over her. "You looked cold..." The voice came again.
"Mind your own business..." Aurelia whispered, but she didn't push away the blanket. She pulled it tighter, tucking her knees further into her chest.
More rustling of scales came from behind her and a warmer source of heat pressed against her back. Pink-skinned hands squeezed around her, forming a tight embrace.
"I said, mind your own damn business!" Aurelia shouted under her breath and tears once more welled up in her eyes. She tried to hold them in, but the hot drops burned their way out, welling up on their own.
"It's gonna be okay..."
"No, it's not!" Aurelia shouted now. Those pink-skinned arms squeezed her so tight, she felt like she'd hurl. Nausea built in her throat and she barely managed to swallow it back.
"It's gonna be okay, I promise..." Those powerful hands pulled her up, bringing her face to a warm shoulder. She hated that shoulder more than anything...
"This is all your fault..." Aurelia whispered. "This is all your fault. This is all your fault!" Her voice rose into a shout as she repeated the words.
Aurelia thrashed against the pink arms, swinging her fists against the chest she hated so much. Over and over, she slammed the butt of her palms against the shoulders in front of her.
"I promise, it's gonna be alright."
"What do you know!? There's nothing left for me. It's all gone and it's all your fault!!"
Aurelia swung her fists into the pink-skinned chest over and over, but the strong arms never released her. She beat her hands against it until pain arced through her wrists, but those strong arms never released her.
"What do you know..." Aurelia whispered now. She let her arms fall limply to her sides. The hot tears she tried to hold back now flowed endlessly down her cheeks. "What do you know..."
No answer came. Instead, the arms pulled Aurelia tighter, fingers stroking her hair. Aurelia's face fell into the crook of a pink-skinned shoulder, and she silently stayed there.
"I'll make sure it turns out alright. I promise..." the voice came again.
"It's already broken," Aurelia whispered, shaking her head. "It's broken, and there's no way to fix it!"
"Even still, it'll turn out alright..."
"I don't need it to be alright, I need it fixed!" Aurelia shouted again.
No response came, only the silent fingers stroking her hair.
"Why... Why did I let it break..." Aurelia looked up, meeting Synsia's gaze. "Why did I let it break...?"
Synsia smiled gently but didn't respond.
In those soft eyes, Aurelia felt her anger flare up once more. She wanted to shout out, knock the kindness from that stupid expression, but she knew it was useless. That wouldn't bring back what she lost, nothing could.
From the very first moment she arrived here, her life as a priestess had been over. Whether the seal broke or held fast, she still wouldn't have a place to return to. In the end, the shattering of the seal meant nothing...
Aurelia lowered her eyes, burying her face back into Synsia's warm shoulder. Those warm fingers returned, stroking through her hair. The sensation made her sick, but pushing them away seemed like too much effort...
--- Day 83 ---
Aurelia awoke in Synsia's warmth. The Lamia's long thick tail wrapped around her, from her shoulders to her toes. As she stirred awake, the coils began to loosen and pull away.
"Good morning," Synsia called out.
Aurelia wiped the sleep from her eyes, turning towards the sound. "Hm? What are you doing awake?"
"I didn't sleep," Synsia grinned. "I thought you might run away again, so I stayed up all night to watch over you."
As she slowly came back to her senses, Aurelia looked around, remembering where they were. For as far the eye could see, there was nothing but void. And she was here because....
"Why..." Aurelia found herself mumbling. She frowned as more memories returned and she caught back up.
Why am I so weak? Why would you even want to hold someone like me captive..?
The thoughts arose in her mind.
"I mean, staying up one night isn't too hard. And it's like I said, I enjoy spending time with you."
Aurelia winced at those words. A wave of nausea hit her and she took a deep breath to hold it back. "I don't get it," she eventually replied. From Synsia's words to the unease in her belly, she didn't understand any of it.
"Well, think it over," Synsia yawned. She then curled up on the ground, using her hands as a pillow. "For now, I'm tired."
What is the point of her staying up if she's just gonna fall asleep immediately!?
Aurelia shook her head.
And she's not even using a proper pillow!
Aurelia furrowed her brow, then walked up and kneeled down beside her.
"Hm?"
"The ground is hard, What are you thinking? Trying to sleep on it like that..." Aurelia scowled down at the Lamia. She had slept on it when first coming here, so she knew from first-hand experience just how hard the ground was.
"Oh, I'm fine-"
Aurelia deepened her scowl, silencing Synsia with a look. "Don't be dumb. I'm not gonna heal you if your back starts hurting you know." Gently, she took Synsia's head, placing it into her lap. "At least do this much for yourself..."
Synsia's eyes widened, then a soft smile rose to her lips. Silently, she turned on her side, nuzzling her cheek against Aurelia's thighs. Before long, her eyes drifted to a close. The sight sickened her.
