Chapter 2

Abby sighed as she scrubbed down the cake pans with single minded determination. It was a while after closing and she was finishing up the cleaning. They had her on the evening shift in the bakery for now, covering the last few hours until close and cleanup. She was working to build enough credit to get into the pre-dawn shift, where she could actually help bake the bread, but she had to put in more hours. She enjoyed baking but she hated cleaning. Her mother always woke her up as the sun rose every Sunday and made her clean the house top to bottom, and if she let her irritation show she'd get screamed at or a cuff on the ear. Now that she was on her own for the first time she had discovered she was a fairly messy person. Will was fairly messy himself but she took it to another level. He was already giving her looks about how she left her clothes and food wrappers on the floor of his, of their, apartment. He had started making a dresser for her, which was incredibly sweet, but she was tempted to keep leaving her clothes strewn about his place, just to annoy him. She smiled to herself, imagining his sigh, his put upon look.

"What are you smiling about?" asked Will.

She looked up and he was there. With his plain face and well worn coat and the smile he always had when he saw her.

"Just looking forward to you picking me up," she said.

"Awww."

Will walked up to her and gave her a peck on the cheek.

"You need a little more time?"

"Ummm..." Abby looked down. She had a few more pans to go and then a quick wipedown of the counters. They still had a fine dusting flour.

"I can help," said Will.

"Oh you don't have to. It's my job."

"It's fine. Sooner you're done, the sooner we can get out of here."

Abby felt a surge of affection towards him. He was always willing to help, never complaining.

Between the two of them, the rest of the cleaning finished quickly. Once everything was cleaned up and put away, they met at the front of the bakery, in front of the long wooden counters with the glass panels. During the day they were filled with all sorts of pastries. Aunt Maddie was a true artist when it came to breads and cakes, but right now the displays were empty, which always made Abby a little sad.

"Did you still want to go to the Dorian?" asked Will.

"Honestly, I'm a little too tired to go out. I sweat through my clothes one time too many today," said Abby.

"Ah, makes sense."

"I don't want to just head home though."

"Gotcha... did you... just want to go to the park? Feed the ducks?"

"Feed the ducks?"

"Yeeess?" said Will, looking a little uncertain.

Abby started to laugh, the idea of a terrifying vampire sitting in a park feeding ducks struck her as absurd.

"What? It's very relaxing."

"You know what? Sure. That actually sounds perfect. Let's feed some ducks."

They grabbed a couple of leftover loaves and made their way through the streets. The streets were surprisingly busy this late at night, lit by the blue or yellow glow of mage lamps. Many of the lamp posts looked new. It was another sign of how the city had changed to accommodate its new masters. There weren't that many vampires in the city, but it had already begun to conform to their needs.

She and Will strolled down the broad cobblestoned avenue of the merchant district of Tamlin. Abby had been completely overwhelmed by the city when she had first arrived. but she had gotten used to it surprisingly quickly. Now she never wanted to leave. She found the bustle and energy of the city was intoxicating. And the city was a riot of people of different backgrounds and origins. Not only did her darker skin pass without comment, it wasn't even that unusual. Will had brought her to another of the Savon who owned a clothing shop and she had a few nice new dresses that were in the more colorful, tasteful styles preferred by the city folk. For the first time in her life she felt like she fit right in.

"Anything interesting happening at work?

"Not so much. Dora is reading a new romance novel and is going on about it whether we want to listen or not. And Rachel adopted another cat."

"Another one? How many is she up to?"

"I don't think she even knows. At least eight."

"I mean it is easier for vampires to keep cats because they can bond them, but she's going to run out of blood feeding them at some point."

"Does it take that much?"

"Not really, I'm mostly joking. But still."

"She says they're a lot better than people."

"Well, that's certainly true."

The merchant's district gave way to one of the several parks that dotted the city. It was clean and well maintained, a testament to the wealth and prosperity of the merchants who used it. There were manicured, rolling hills and strategically placed trees for reading under, nit that they needed the shade right now.

"What about you? Anything interesting happen tonight?"

"Not tonight, but I went to a party meeting after you went to bed and that was as exciting as it usually is," said Will, his voice wry.

"A party meeting? For the... the dawn party."

"Uh huh."

"Do those get rowdy?"

"Oh yeah. The family prides itself on speaking their mind but I have way too many cousins and nieces that do not know when to keep their mouths shut."

"Was there fighting?"

"no. No, not like that. Just a lot of insults and ragging."

"What were you arguing about?"

"Oh, some of the fledglings started a soup kitchen and homeless shelter and they want to go public."

"You mean, just say 'Hey, this homeless shelter is run by vampires?'"

"Uh huh."

"... don't take this the wrong way but i feel like that would hurt their attendance."

"Not necessarily. The homeless tend to know about us more than the housed. The family is sort of an open secret among the homeless population of most large cities. That's part of the reason the kids want to go public. Since the blooded are running this city openly now they figure there's no reason to hide. They figure it'll be good publicity."

"I... guess I could see that. What do you think?"

Will shrugged, "I like the idea of being more open, letting people know the good we do, but I don't think this will work out. The churches run a lot of the homeless shelters in the city and I think they'd see it as competition. Also, the Midnighters would lose their shit about it. They take our secrecy very seriously. If the kids manage to get their idea past the Assembly, the Midnights would sabotage it any way they can. They'd try sneaking in and scaring away the people using the shelter and it'd be a whole thing. It'd probably start a fight we don't really need to have."

"That's awful," said Abby.

"Yeah, the Midnighters can be pretty awful but you know, that's family for you."

"It doesn't seem right, to... to give up on something good just because a bunch of assholes would try and ruin it."

"I mean if the party decides to bring it to the Assembly and it passes I'd be fine with it. I might even do some shifts. I just think you have to pick your battles. The war's the big thing right now. We can sort out going public after."

"I guess," said Abby. She tried to keep the skepticism out of her voice.

"It's okay if you disagree. Disagreeing is what the parties and the Assembly are all about."

They arrived at the pond. It was a good twenty feet across, bordered by a few wooden benches. They found the one the most free of stains and sat down. Abby handed Will a few pieces of bread and he tossed them in the pond. In a few moments, the ducks, who were very familiar with being fed, came to call.

"I actually didn't know ducks were awake at night," said Abby.

"Uh huh, I think they take short naps throughout the day."

Will suddenly stopped mid throw. Bread crumbs tumbled out of his hand. He had a distant look in his eye.

"You okay?" asked Abby.

He jumped a little and looked at her. It seemed like he had forgotten she was there for a second, "Oh, yeah I'm fine could you just..." he looked around. "... Sorry, can I leave you... here for a few minutes?"

"I guess?" said Abby, confused and a little hurt.

"It'll just be a few minutes. I'll be back soon," said Will. Then he faded away, vanishing behind the Shroud.

Abby hesitated for a minute, then she heard shouting off the path, muffled by the trees. She waited another minute, then got up and walked towards it. She made sure to walk a little slow to not catch up to Will. She made her way through the trees and in about a minute she came to a small clearing to see a couple fighting. The man was nicely dressed, with a well made blue coat and crisply pressed pants that marked him as one of the successful merchants or shopkeepers that had a business near the park. The woman would have looked like a fine lady to Abby a few weeks ago, but now she could tell her clothes were gaudy rather than fancy and they were cheap, marking her as one of the prostitutes that serviced the rich merchants of the district.

The arguing was already heated, reaching a crescendo that was painfully familiar to Abby, and then the merchant's hand lashed out and the prostitute rocked back. A knife appeared in her hand from somewhere but she was stunned from the blow, and the merchant grabbed and twisted. The woman screamed as her arm strained in its socket.

Then Will faded back into existence. When Abby saw him, she quickly hid behind a tree, just peeking out. Will grabbed the merchant's arm and he cried out from the crushing strength of his grip. Will's eyes were dead black and the man stared into them in terror, frozen in place and shivering.

"You think you can treat people like that? Take their goods and pay them with your fists?" said Will, his voice cold with anger. He grabbed the man by the throat and tilted his head back. The man was weeping slightly, the woman had backed away, eyes wide, pressing her back against a tree.

"You're nothing but a bully and a thief. And now you're going to pay," said Will.

He opened his mouth and his teeth were pointy and serrated, like a shark. He lashed out and sank them into the merchant's throat. The man moaned; it was a terrible noise, a moan of fear so strong it shaded into despair. The merchant shuddered helplessly as Will's mouth worked at his throat. Abby saw a thin trail of blood flow down his neck. Staining his shirt. The man's moan faded into faint whimpers and he jerked spasmodically as Will fed. After a minute or two Will pulled away. He ran a finger up the trail of blood on the man's neck and licked his finger. Then he pulled the merchant close, dead black eyes only a few inches from the merchant's.

"If me or my family ever catch you again, we'll take more. A lot more. And if we catch you a third time, we'll take it all. And we're always watching."

Then Will threw the merchant. He tumbled into the grass only a few feet from Abby. Abby stared into his pale, sweaty face, his wide terrified eyes, then looked up to see Will staring at her.

Terror filled her. Will was going to be so mad. He'd yell at her, send her away. She couldn't bear it. She turned and ran, trees blurring by her as she made her way through the park. She heard Will shout but it faded as she left him behind, running back to the path. Her foot caught on something and she stumbled, almost falling. Her hand shot out and found a tree. She cried out in pain as the rough wood tore her skin. She started crying, overwhelmed by fear that she'd ruined everything she gained with one stupid decision.

"Abby," said Will from behind her.

She kept crying and didn't turn around. She couldn't face him.

She heard him approach, felt him behind her.

"Abby, I'm so sorry."

Her tears guttered out, she turned around.

"You're

sorry?"

"I didn't mean for you to see that. I know... I... there's good reasons why..." he trailed off, he looked scared and embarrassed.

"You're not mad at me?"

"I..." he paused. "Now that I'm thinking about it, I am a little mad, yeah. I did tell you to stay by the pond. But I'm mostly just worried about you. I know that must have looked terrible."

She blinked once as she stared at him.

"Will, that was fucking awesome."

Will blinked back, "What?"

"You saved that woman! I mean I know she was a prostitute but that doesn't mean she deserved to be beaten. And I know guys like that. They think they can just do whatever they want. The look on his face..." she was breathing hard, felt excitement bubbling in her chest. She tried to imagine what it felt like, to have a hand on his throat, how that moan must have sounded up close, right in your ear. She licked her lips.

Will kept staring at her for another moment, then he gave her a small half smile.

"You're really something."

She barked a laugh, "Do you do that a lot?"

"Not a lot. I do a patrol every once in a while and break up a fight when the opportunity arises. Some of my family do it a lot more."

"I...that's... amazing, So how do you normally get blood, when you're not fighting crime?"

"Oh, well..." Will looked embarrassed, "...a lot of my family tie our feeding into our crafts, so I'll go to a street and go from house to house, making repairs, fixing old chairs, leaving kids toys, stuff like that. And I'll have a little bite from two or three people a night while I'm fixing things. Not enough to hurt them."

"While they're asleep?"

Will nodded, looking pained, "I'm sorry, I know that's creepy."

"It is, but... but I guess it makes sense. That way you're not scaring them."

"Right."

"And you are paying for it, in a way."

Will nodded eagerly, "That's the idea. That's the core of the Dawn philosophy. We call it the Bargain. You have to pay back what you take even if your... victims," Will made a face like the word tasted bad, "...don't know about it."

There was an awkward pause.

"Feeding the ducks feels like a weird follow up to all this," said Will.

"I completely agree."

"Sorry the night got cut short."

"That's okay. I... enjoyed this too."

Will laughed, "That's a very weird thing to say but I'll take it. Did you want to... head back?"

Abby nodded. She suddenly wondered if she'd taste the merchant's blood if she kissed will. Her stomach flexed and she squeezed her thighs together.

"Sure, sure, let's head back," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

She started to move and winced as her hand flared with pain.

"You okay?" asked Will.

"I hurt my hand," said Abby.

She held it between them, palm up. Her hand was covered with scrapes and blood was seeping out of the wounds. Will stared at her bloody palm for a second, then took her wrist. Abby let him bring her palm to his mouth and give it a long. Slow lick. Abby shuddered and felt warm wetness seep into her underwear from her arousal. Then Will cut his palm on his fang and rubbed it across the wounds on her hand. Abby's hand turned warm and pleasant. Almost like when Will bit her. She drew a sharp breath at the feel of Will's blood absorbing into her skin. There was a strange feeling of stretching and as she watched the scrapes on her hands closed up.

"Better?" asked Will. His voice was a little breathy and the word was a little distorted. Abby saw his fangs, just the two, were out.

Abby nodded, then leaned forward to kiss him. Just as she suspected she tasted the merchant's blood on his lips. It made another wave of arousal clench her groin as she leaned into him more, putting a hand in his messy hair. Will made a shocked noise into her mouth.

The kiss broke and they were staring at each other. Both breathing hard.

"Let's go home," said Abby

Will nodded and they headed home.

...

They didn't talk on the walk back to Will's apartment. Abby couldn't think of anything to say and she got the feeling Will couldn't either. She also didn't want to ruin how she was feeling. She was still high off what she had witnessed. Her head buzzed and she felt jittery; a little aroused and very excited. She was worried talking about it, about anything, would pop this feeling like a soap bubble, so she kept silent. She hoped Will understood that too.

Will's place, their place, wasn't far from the park but the walk felt endless. But when they reached it she felt like no time passed at all. She was through the door and it slammed shut behind her. When it did she turned and threw herself on Will, pulling him down for another kiss. Will's lips met hers and she felt his need. Their mutual desire passed between them like current, like captured lightning. Will started pushing her toward the bed and she let herself be pushed, then she leapt and wrapped her legs around him, settling on his waist. She had seen how strong Will was in the park and she knew Will could hold her. Will stumbled for just a moment from the sudden shift in balance but then he steadied, marching her to bed with her clinging to him like she weighed nothing at all. His easy strength, the way he held her like she was made of feathers, made the clenched fist of arousal in her gut flex. She pressed her lips into his and tangled her hands in his hair in response to that need.

Then she was falling. She had a moment of panic before her body hit the mattress and bounced just a little. Will followed her down, his lips finding hers again. She shoved her tongue in his mouth and he gave a deep grunt. His hands squeezed her breasts and she didn't feel any fear at all, no lingering pain from the past, only the need of the moment. Will scrabbled at her breast for a moment then his hands went down her sides and under her shirt. She made a muffled grunt of her own into his open mouth and his hand went under her bindings and cupped her breast. His other hand went under her skirt, squeezing her ass as their mouths kept moving over each other.

Abruptly Will pulled away from her. She had a moment of disappointment until she realized it was just to get his clothes off. His shirt flew over his head, revealing his smoothly muscled chest and arms, a patch of chest hair with the slightest hints of white. Abby admired the smooth lines of his body. Will was a little skinny but had the muscles you got from working saws and sanders for hours on end. She shook herself and followed his lead, shedding her clothes as fast as she could. In a few moments she was revealed to him. She had a moment of anxiety. Will had seen her naked in bits and pieces, but not all at once, not when they were about to make love. Her anxiety quickly vanished when she saw the look on his face. His eyes were a little wide and his mouth a little open and she knew all he felt when he saw her was lust. Will looked at her body and he wanted her and at the moment that was all she needed. Then Will was on her again and she sank into the feeling of his skin against hers. She ran her hands up the muscles of his arms, over his back. She felt the scratch of his chest hair against her body and even that felt wonderful. She loved the way he felt against her, the way he moved his hands over her belly, her breasts. She could tell he loved her breasts and she loved that he loved them. He was kissing her neck and she loved the feel of his lips, his tongue on her skin. She felt the slightest prick of his fangs on her neck and she gasped, pins and needles running over her body, but he didn't bite down. Not yet, but the sharp feel against her skin was a promise and it plucked at the thrumming tension in her belly.

Will started kissing down her body, over her chest. He took one of her nipples into his mouth and sucked. She arched off the bed at the pull of his lips on her breasts, the little sparks of sensation that bounced off the tension in her groin. Will ran his hands up and down her body as he sucked on one breast, then the other, she felt the scrape of his fangs against the flesh of her breast and it made her gasp again. But she knew it wouldn't happen yet. They could take their time.
