Trying to get back to posting with some kind of regularity, but we'll see. I may do a sequel to this one if I can come up with a good trick for the main character to use. I have another story written and I am working on another one, so I should be able to post another one fairly soon.
Luciano failed to restrain an impulse to run to the front door where a package was waiting. The package was from Silver, more an acquaintance than a friend, but someone who was willing to support his amateur interest in magic. Silver had demonstrated his own expertise and Luciano was ready to become his student. The result had been a few slight of hand tricks that he had gotten really good at, however he really wanted to do magic. Silver had been very patient and after further instruction had promised to send a kit to get him started, with further assurance that instruction would continue. Now with the box containing the kit in hand Luciano was eager to return to his den to open it, when his wife, Zhi blocked his path. Smiling he spoke.
"Yes, my love." She glanced at the box, but failed to comment.
"Xun is coming to visit." He caught himself quickly to avoid dropping the box.
"When?" She shrugged as she slowly turned to return to their bedroom.
"Some time in the next couple of hours. She'll be here till Monday afternoon." Luciano nearly continued to the den when he stopped to call after her.
"Wait, what about your retreat?" Zhi had been going on a retreat with some friends, which included a full spa treatment, for five years now, just longer than they were married.
"Oh, I'm going of course, it's all paid for. I'll leave tomorrow morning and be back Sunday evening as I usually do." He quickly crossed the distance she had made.
"And your sister?" She folded her arms.
"I'll spend tonight with her and the rest of the time I leave her to you." He spoke quickly before she could walk off.
"Your sister is twenty-four, she doesn't need a babysitter and I have plans of my own." Zhi shook her head.
"Out with your friends doesn't count. I don't want my sister left alone." This time she walked off quickly and he stood a moment longer before continuing to the den. Once at his desk he opened the box, his enthusiasm cooled, but still eager to see the contents. Inside there was a small box and two translucent boxes folded up. Included with these were a set of instructions. The small box was to be used with a card trick, a note inside strongly encouraged the use of a new deck of cards. So the audience wouldn't think it had been prepared. Luciano whistled as he considered the complexity of the tricks. At that point he was not completely certain he could do the tricks, well possibly the card trick, but not the other. Despite these misgivings he practiced the hand movements and the words, separately as he wanted to get them right without risking a botched trick. He was in the midst of this practice when his phone rang. A glance told him it was his friend Zahi.
"Hi, Zahi, how goes it?" He still looked over the instructions as he listened.
"Luciano, my friend are you ready for the weekend?" Luciano groaned as he dropped the instructions and leaned back in his chair.
"Change of plans. The wife's sister is staying the weekend and her retreat goes on." Zahi's groan matched his.
"So, you just going to stay home?" Luciano considered this for several moments before responding.
"Well, you could join me, but yeah I'm stuck here till she gets back on Sunday." He slowly returned his attention to the instructions as he awaited Zahi's response.
"Sure, I'll be there tomorrow night. I'll bring the beers." Luciano grinned.
"Sounds like a plan. See you then." They hung up and Luciano finished emptying the box. The packed boxes proved easy enough to unfold and snap into place before setting them into their bases. He turned to his computer, dealt with some emails and generally kept busy until he heard the doorbell. Assuming it was his sister-in-law Xun, he rose and walked toward the door. As expected his wife was opening the door to reveal a young Chinese woman, who was clearly Zhi's younger sister. The two embraced and after a short time Xun turned to embrace him as well. After a moment she stepped back and smiled.
"Hello, Luciano, so you're stuck with me tomorrow?" He nodded.
"Looks like it, but I'm sure we can make the best of it." Xun laughed softly and shook her head.
"I'm sure you have things you would rather do than hang out with me all day." Before he could consider a response Zhi spoke.
"I'm sure Luciano will find something for you two to do." At this he merely nodded. Xun quickly looked from one to the other, but didn't speak as her sister led her to the guest room. Xun did her best to make dinner a lively affair, but in practice it proved to be her and Zhi catching up with only some input from Luciano. Afterward he returned to his den and after some further consideration of the package from Silver he decided to simply head to bed. Zhi followed soon after.
"I hope you will be a better host this weekend then you were tonight." He sighed as she got into bed.
"You had so much to catch up on, it didn't make sense for me to break in. Besides I think I have been very graceful about you derailing my plans." She gave him a sharp look, but hesitated before speaking.
"True. But this retreat is not something that I can cancel and get a refund. I can't reschedule either. She won't complain, but I don't want Xun alone. I promise to come back earlier on Sunday." He turned to her and she accepted his kiss. He lay back and they were soon asleep.
He briefly stirred as Zhi rose to make an early start. She planted a kiss on his lips before leaving and he settled back down.
Later he woke, not late, but still a good long sleep. He dressed and headed to the kitchen. There he found Xun eating breakfast. She smiled when he entered.
"Good morning, sit down. I'll make you breakfast." Luciano hesitated, but soon sat down.
"Alright, I don't feel like starting this weekend off with an argument." She playfully punched his shoulder.
"No argument." Luciano relaxed in his chair while she assembled breakfast for him.
"So, Xun is there a particular reason
this
weekend and not another, given you won't really see your sister?" She spoke without turning around.
"Actually I have to meet someone for lunch today. Nothing too serious, work related." He nodded slowly then remembered she couldn't see it.
"Fair enough." Before he could speak further she turned around with a plate that she quickly placed in front of him. "Thank you." She nodded and sat across from him as he ate.
"So, what plans did I ruin?" He nearly choked on his food, but managed to swallow and drink.
"Don't feel too bad. We both know Zhi." She nodded, but still looked expectantly. Luciano nodded.
"I was planning to meet up with some friends at a hotel a little distance from here where we could meet. We would drink and only have to walk upstairs afterward. I was going to show off the magic kit I just got." She brightened.
"Magic? Really?" He nodded. "Maybe you could show me later?" He looked thoughtful as he ate a few more bites.
"Well, my friend Zahi is coming over later. Maybe we could make it dinner and I could do some magic after." She nodded vigorously.
"Cool. Well, I have things to work on before my meeting. See you later." He waved and returned to finish breakfast. For the rest of the morning he focused on ensuring that he thoroughly understood the tricks. When he realized it was time for lunch he went back to the kitchen. While eating he called Zahi. Zahi picked up right away.
"Hey, Luciano, what is it?" Luciano leaned back.
