Captain's log, star-date 732; 69: "The starship Sinsertion continues along its maiden voyage across known space of the federation. Its mission, to re-survey the internal structure of the galaxy falling under federal jurisdiction, thus facilitating peaceful cooperation and trade across the disparately lead parts of the federation"
So started one out of many of the captain's logs which I had given on my first voyage as a starship captain. Many years had I spent in training, all to learn of the many interconnecting parts of a grand vessel, such as the one which I currently commanded. It had been a surreal experience to go from the simulations and exams to the real deal, almost as if my life hadn't just begun a new chapter with the start of my first voyage as captain, but a new book in its entirety.
The Sinsertion was a massive thing, bigger than the enterprise class starship used for exploration missions, but less advanced. It was built for the purpose of light surveying, trade and judicial enforcement. For my purposes, I thought it suited me quite well. The way in which I tossed around daily, second guessing myself and fervently checking the vast library of notes I had taken in my academy years, if I had been in command of a more cutting edge ship it would all have been so much worse.
The note checking I did was very peculiar, as I was a cybernetically enhanced individual. It was both a blessing, as I could instantly retrieve any piece of information which I desired at any time, and a curse, as I came to rely on that ability more and more. It was necessary that I use that ability, the snap decisions I made needed to be the right ones, the mission and the crew needed to be prioritized, but it always did make me feel as if I was useless, only good for looking things up in a series of texts stored on the Sinsertion's and my own computer storages.
"Prasutagus, what's our position?" I asked our chief navigator, his well trimmed whitening beard doing much to frame his wise looking older face. He was a good man, even though he was far older than me and his experiences vaster than mine by several lifetimes. Despite this he still followed the orders I gave him with both diligence and honor. He never judged me for foolish decisions caused by inexperience, instead merely pushing me gently in the right direction. Happy to be part of my first voyage and readily sharing in his lifetime's worth of space travel knowledge.
"We're making our way closer to the Siev nebula. Our goal lying beyond it. It's known for being aggresta" Prasutagus answered calmly. I knew the word aggresta. I was sure of it and didn't need to look through my notes or the textbooks stored on the starship computer. It meant a part of space hazardous to travel through on account of the debris present, able to cause massive damage to a ship if collided with. Prasutagus finalized his statement "Avoiding the nebula would be most inconvenient and cause major delays"
"Thanks! Hiroki, shield status?" I asked the engineer on deck. Hiroki who liked her job on the Sinsertion being more outward facing and more human-centric than most engineers, those were needed just as much as the recluses in the engine room; the people who could translate the dense tech-speak into something comprehensible were very sought after among the captains visiting the academy I had noticed. Hiroki in particular were very good at that function.
"Less than ideal for our circumstances, sir" Hiroki started, trying to cut to the chase in her usual way, aiming to confuse me as little as possible "If we travel straight through the upcoming obstacle, our chances for survival are below tolerance levels as our shields are currently in the process of regenerating. If no other changes are made, then I suggest waiting until the shields have regenerated sufficiently. Two weeks according to my calculations, sir"
"What dodge factor would be needed to put our chances of survival above tolerance levels?" I asked, knowing that the way to extend the shield capacity was to either let them regenerate or to just not use them, the latter option being dependent, in our current situation, on avoiding the debris present.
"We would need the entire pilot team for that... Sir" Hiroki stated, turning to me as she did, breaking her professionalism just a tad. Her ability to simplify technical aspects down to exactly what was necessary for me to hear, did strike me as odd from time to time. Her answers often pulling me from a sort of bubble of abstraction into the very reality which I was doing the abstraction in.
"Thank you" I told Hiroki, finding no reason to hide my gratitude from her, or anyone else, working under me. A plan was forming in my head. A plan that would let us speed ahead before long. I pushed down the button which let me speak directly to the engine room "Cut speed to five percent, hold engine power just above the activity threshold"
I left the bridge soon after I had given my order to the engine room, my intent being to bring the piloting team to full force. The head pilot had been absent for a number of days at this point, something that I didn't think much of, everyone did need their rest after all and the head pilot, a woman named Belle, had been highly confrontational for the last couple of days, which was more than enough evidence from my end that she needed some space. Nevertheless, in this moment I still needed her to attend to her duties as a pilot and planned to confront her on this.
I knew how she was in this moment. If I wasn't careful, there would be a lot of screaming coming my way and perhaps even a punch or two. I used the time I had to mentally prepare myself, walking through the corridors, each of the doors parting themselves as I made my way towards them. I flipped through word after word in my head, almost creating strange poems as I went. I was hoping to find some set of words that would let Belle know how vital it was that she attend her duties in this moment.
"Sir, a moment please!" I heard one of my crew shout after me as I proceeded down the halls, a short Odanni alien, he was named Kavleri if I remembered correctly and was a diligent data scientist and archivist "Someone has been tampering with our computer systems"
"How do you know and what are the damages?" I asked authoritatively, slowing my step slightly as I engaged in quick conversation with the data scientist. From the sound of it, it was something to be concerned about, at least if you were to judge from his haste in letting me know about it.
"I ran a routine diagnostic just a few hours ago, it indicates that someone accessed the files in the archives and potentially wrote to the file systems" The Odanni crew member answered. His face which seemed warped by human standards poking out on his elongated head showing no clear emotion to my underlying human brain, but a quick analysis of Odanni facial expressions on the digital imagery received from my enhanced eyes revealed his concern.
"Okay, what does this mean for our mission?" I asked after confirming that his words had reached my ears. I could of course look up from my notes what potential damages could be generated from an incongruous computer file system, but I didn't want to stop my train of thought as far as Belle was concerned. Oh, how I wished that all my technical experts had Hiroki's ability to cut to the chase.
"Well, from the looks of it, the part of our system which has been written to is our documents. If one of the colonies we're visiting needs data from our archives then we need to let them know that it's potentially erratic" Kavleri answered, doing so in much the way I wanted, letting me know what I needed to be concerned with by his news.
"Thanks I'll look into it once I have a free moment" I told the concerned data scientist. Which he responded to with a curt thanks before he let me continue on my way to my more pressing concern.
It wasn't long before I stood in front of the door to Belle's quarter. The pilot was entitled to her down time, but I still needed to let her know that I needed her for an extended time along with the rest of her team and that her rest would have to continue at a later date. I knew that she may be tired and might act less agreeable than appropriate, it was something that I mentally prepared myself for as I took a deep breath in front of her door. Whatever protest she'd throw, I had to know not to hold it against her.
"Why are you here?" Was the first words which the woman spoke as she poked her head through the door. Her voice was judgemental and angry, making it clear that she didn't want me in the vicinity, her face saying much the same thing, as it was poking out from the blonde hair that boxed her face in. The voice only became angrier as she continued "Am I not entitled to time off? If you weren't such an ignorant oaf, you'd just leave me alone!"
"I would let you relax until you'd be able to perform your duties optimally, but unfortunately, your current presence at your post is needed" I informed calmly, trying my best not to agitate the absent woman further. Her eyebrows were still furrowed, even though the grip on her door seemed to be uncharacteristically loose for someone so confrontational. I requested "Please come with me to the bridge, so our mission can proceed"
"Oh, you think you're so clever and smart right. Well I got news for you" Belle raised her voice from behind her door, screaming angrily at me as she tried her very best to insult me "You're the worst of the worst when it comes to captains! How you managed to blunt your way through the academy is beyond me! Now let me be!"
