A Comet's Tail Chapter Four
Moving Day
Preparations moved quickly after this. Rick knew they couldn't leave the penned-up people alone for long, both the theater and barn. He had no idea what they were going to do with them, but he couldn't just abandon them.
They filled the two pickups with food stuffs, computers, solar panels. They filled the helicopter to capacity, save room for the men to unload it.
They were off by noon. The chopper arrived and unloaded their goods into the garage. There was a storage area despite all the vehicles. They moved the cattle truck outside. Rick had an idea.
When the pickups arrived, they put everything into the garage.
When unloaded, Rick spoke up. "Start with setting up the solar panels and connecting them to the grid in the generator room."
Doug had experience with solar panels, and he and Joe began the project.
Rick asked Susan and Dr. Liz to speak with him. "I have been thinking about the fifty-two people in the theater. We can't leave them there for long. I am considering taking the cattle truck and bringing them here. We can move the horses to the smaller barn and the larger barn should just about hold them all."
Liz nodded, "I do want to look at them. I am going to go in and look at the ones here now. That is why I brought Prisilla with me."
Susan wasn't so sure. "You think we can get them all in there? And, how are we going to take care of them once they are here? And, what about the rest of the town?"
"All good questions. I don't have an answer for any of them. One thing at a time."
It was decided that a couple of the men would go with Rick to pick up the town's people in the theater. Jesus knew how to drive a tractor trailer. He started it up, and they were off. When they arrived in the town, the wolves
were back, roaming the streets. They were hungry and not in a good mood. A few rifle shots convinced them to back off for now. They didn't see any more people wandering around the streets, so they must have gotten them all.
Jesus backed the trailer up to the back door of the theater. They dropped the cattle ramps and opened the doors. There people were there, just as before. It was not difficult to herd them into the truck. Within a few minutes, they were loaded up and on their way.
They were unloaded just as easily. They parked the truck. As Dr. Liz came to see Rick. "What the hell am I going to do with all of these people?"
"I don't know right now. Just do the best you can."
Doug had the solar panels up and running that day. It had been just three days since the comet passed by. It seemed like forever.
Joe had the computers and communications set up. For what that was worth. They had heard nothing since that morning.
That changed the next morning. The communication network jumped to life that morning. Joe ran to find Rick. "We have communication, sir. They are asking for you."
Rick couldn't believe it. So, other people survived too. Let's see what they want.
"This is Major General Winston Garrett. To whom am I speaking?"
"This is Major Richard Core, sir."
"What is your status, Major?"
"We are setting up camp near a small town in the valley. We have everything we need to survive."
"That is good, because it is going to be a while before we get back to normal, if ever. The President's Science Advisor assured the government that tests on the space station deemed the tail harmless. The President and government believed them. Now, Washington is gone.
We have spoken to a couple of other countries. Our cities are barren. Some of the silos are intact, but they are stranded."
"Sir, we are prepared to survive for as long as necessary. Forever, if need be. We are prepared to defend this valley."
"That is good, because I don't believe you will receive anything from us for a very long time, if ever."
"We will be fine, sir."
"Very well. Defend yourselves, and good luck. Out."
News of the call spread quickly, and Rick called a meeting. It was decided that this changed nothing, and they would continue. If anyone showed up in the future they would deal with them then.
Six of the men moved into the bunkhouse for the time being. Dr. Liz and Prisilla set up a medical office in one of the small rooms on the first floor. There were six bedrooms in the main house. Rick called a meeting to discuss how to divide them out.
"As we know, we are on our own. We will need to share rooms because there are more of us than bedrooms. Since we will probably be here for the majority of our lives, social contact will be left to the individuals."
Rick saw several smiles and head turns as he said this. He knew people were already pairing up, and that was fine with him. He had even thought about it himself. It was just more difficult for the commander. The woman would probably have to make the first move.
After dinner, Susan went out to find Rick sitting on the porch. "Nice night, isn't it?"
"Yeah, it's so peaceful. Hard to believe we have such a different world now."
"I was wondering if you had made your sleeping arrangements yet?"
"I was thinking of taking the master bedroom, but I will need to find someone to share it with me."
Susan smiled and took his hand. "I think something can be arranged."
When they got to the bedroom, she kissed him gently. He kissed her back, not quite so gently. She was a striking black-haired woman with a beautiful face that had gotten her in trouble with more than one commander. It was now that it could be appreciated. Rick sat down on a couch and Susan sat on his lap. He wanted to take it slow, but she was hungry. She kissed him hard and put his hand on her breast. He pushed it under her shirt and squeezed. She groaned with a long-neglected passion. Just to be clear, she took his other hand and pushed it between her legs. That was that. They began removing clothes as fast as possible. Within a few minutes they were both naked. He picked her up and carried her to bed. They didn't even remove the covering. She moved back and spread her legs. He dove between her thighs and began to drink womanly juices. She was very wet and moaning from the moment he arrived at the promised land. Her first orgasm came before he could even get on to the next phase. When she settled down, he paused to look at her face. She was in a different blissful place. He carefully moved up on her and she helped him inside of her. Together they rocked and moaned until it was a mutual explosion. He collapsed on top of her and just lay there. They fell asleep just as they were, entwined in a world of their own.
Rick called a meeting of the leaders. Both doctors, with Susan, Bobby, and Emily.
"We must do something with the people in the barn. They really haven't had anything to eat for four days. We need to clean them up, feed them, and decide what to do with them."
"This is what I want to do. We have that pen at the side of the barn. I recommend we set up the medical station just outside the door in the pen. I want to remove all clothes, shave their hair, and tag them for identification. We will make a list of each, tag number appropriate age and sex."
Dr. Liz nodded. "Sounds good to me."
Rick agreed. "Susan, if you and Mary would assist Liz and Prisilla, we should be able to get this done quickly enough."
