Chapter 2
The next morning Isaac rolled out of bed an hour after his normal wake up time feeling foggy headed and sluggish, that was very unusual for him as normally he snapped awake with the sunrise and bounced to his feet.
He slipped into the shower and washed in a fugue, dressing in jeans and a polo before heading down to the kitchen.
"Morning dad" he called muzzily as he opened the fridge and poured himself a glass of juice. 'Deliciously tasty pineapple and pear juice, the best flavour there is' he thought to himself as he took his first sip.
"Morning son, you're looking a little bleary this morning, just how late did you stay down the street last night exactly?"
"Yeah I feel a bit weird this morning actually dad, I was home before midnight though so it's not that.. maybe I'm coming down with something? Can't remember the last time I got sick."
His father eyed him over his newspaper with concern, "I think I've only seen you sick once, maybe twice in your life son, shifter immune systems are extremely powerful. Keep an eye on it, and head to the clinic if you need to."
"I know dad. Thanks. Oh hey, Cass is coming up for breakfast this morning, did you want to join us?"
"No thanks, I had some toast and I need to leave in a couple minutes for the office. The director called me into the lab."
"On a Saturday? Huh.. well I guess that's why you get paid the big bucks.." Isaac quipped with a smirk.
"Har har, yes well it's a bit unusual but apparently we have some urgent requests from some government department that need attention immediately."
"Okay, well let me know what your timing looks like when you're done, maybe we can grab some lunch, or if its later I'll plan to cook dinner tonight." Isaac offered.
"I'd like that Son, I'll let you know"
His dad was out the door ten minutes later, leaving a still fuzzy headed Isaac sat at the kitchen table with his juice, staring into the middle distance, his mind wandering lethargically.
As he sat sipping at his glass a sensation emerged in the back of his mind, unnoticed at first, some vague suggestion that about now Cass would be getting out of the shower and getting dressed to head over and join him.
A few minutes after that he stood absent mindedly and opened the door, finding a surprised Cassandra standing with her hand raised to press the door bell.
He was snapped out of that strange fuzzy state when she asked "Did you hear me walking up or something?"
He stepped aside and ushered her in to the kitchen table as he thought on how to answer "I actually.. don't know? I don't think so? I've been feeling pretty weird all morning, like fuzz in my brain, as if we'd been drinking last night, but we only had the one beer right? And I only had one or two with dad at dinner.. it's weird, and now you're here I feel fine?"
"That is weird.. I felt pretty out of it this morning too but I think the walk up the street cleared the cobwebs out"
"Huh, well no use worrying about it I guess, I feel fine now. What do you feel like for breakfast? Pancakes, omelet or bacon and eggs?" They shared a brief kiss before Isaac headed to the kitchen and set a pan to heat up on the stove as they chatted.
"An omelet with all the fixings sounds great, thanks babe. Is your dad not here?"
"No he got called into the Lab, some urgent government ask. Didn't tell me much else."
They threw some ideas back and forth about plans for the day as Isaac prepped eggs, bacon, capsicum, mushrooms and more for a couple of loaded omelets, the conversation flowing as smoothly always.
They'd both been a little concerned things would be awkward between them despite the previous nights' passion, but it never eventuated.
They sat side by side, Isaac taking up Cass' hand without a thought, and neither said a thing as they ate together one handed.
After a minute something occurred to Cass "Did you add more mushroom and capsicum to mine?"
"Yeah, I think I did.. was that wrong?"
"No, no, definitely not, it's great thank you. I was thinking about it as you cooked is all but I didn't want to tell you what to do while you were so kindly cooking for me" she smiled and pecked his cheek before returning to her meal.
"Huh, okay well I'm glad you like it."
