Cullen had been sitting propped against the tree for a good half hour, wondering when Angel would wake up. He didn't really know what to think about all of this. For being a werewolf and finding a true mate is one of the most important things ever. But for some reason this only made Cullen even more confused. He was never one to believe in love—heck his own father never showed him what love is and his mother died right after giving birth to him—so what did he really know about love? He accepted a while back that he would never have a mate of his own, and that was fine with him. Now with Angel in his arms, he had absolutely no clue how to even proceed with all of this. It seemed that when Angel was near him, he began to feel the first stirring of feelings towards her. Though when she wasn't around, it seemed like he began to close all emotions off and revert back to how he was prior to finding Angel. Going back and forth like that was exceptionally tiresome.
Cullen began to stroke Angel's hair softly away from her face. He couldn't take his eyes off of her for one moment. He couldn't help but think,
how can one small person like this, change my world completely upside down?
He knew that he would never be able to let her go, even though they would be fighting every step of the way. Cullen was able to hear his phone vibrating where it lay near the pile of his clothes—probably Gavin calling wondering what happened. Shaking his head, he slowly leaned his head back against the tree, closing his eyes. In no time, he fell asleep, for once truly at peace, knowing he finally had his mate.

Angel began to slowly open her eyes, trying to remember what happened. She couldn't help but think,
Why on earth am I lying on the ground?
Then she finally noticed the strong pair of arms wrapped around her, holding her tightly. She lay quietly for a while, enjoying this simple sensation of being held, almost as if she was cared for deeply by Cullen. Not knowing why that even mattered to her, as she barely even knew him, there was no way she was going to let this moment pass.
Angel couldn't help but think of her childhood now.
She didn't really have the great childhood that everyone else did.
Unfortunately, Angel had to grow up fast. Her father was a short tempered, stubborn, physically and emotionally abusive. Now add being drunk into that, and things got even worse. Even though Isobel is technically older than Angel by just a minute—yes twins—Angel was the one that always tried to take care of everyone. One particular memory was of when Angel and Isobel were just 6 years old and their parents were having another fight as always. Angel and Isobel both went to Donny's room and pulled one of those kid tables near his crib and climbed in—trying to protect Donny from having to hear the fighting. Even though Donny was only a year old at the time, both Isabel and Angel didn't want Donny to remember the fighting if they could do anything about it.
Many always say, that many people don't remember what happened when they were really young. Sadly, Angel and Isobel remember everything due to all the fighting. They will never be able to forget any of the fights and they will both remember every single bruise they saw on their mother when their dad would hit her. One evening, when both Angel and Isobel were about 12 years old, was the defining moment when Angel began to fight for others, no matter what the odds.
On this particular evening, her parents were fighting—as usual—but it soon became one of the worst fights ever. Angel's father suddenly covered her mother's mouth and nose—making it impossible for her to breathe. Angel was screaming and screaming at her father to stop and when he didn't, Angel finally took action. She first tried to get in between her mother and father, to push him away from her mother. When that didn't work, she climbed the dresser that was next to him, and jumped upon his back, where she pulled his hair, and clawed his face. He finally let go, when Angel managed to give him a pretty good cut near his one eye. That's when he pushed her off, and left the room. Angel got up right away and called the police. When the police came to arrest her father, Angel was standing on top of the staircase staring down at her father, letting him know through the defiance in her eyes and stance that this would never happen again...that she would always be there to protect the ones she loved, even if it meant fighting him to the end.
Shaking her head, Angel opened her eyes, refusing to think back on all the memories. She looked up at Cullen, seeing how at peace he seemed to be. When he was awake, he always seemed so uptight and just very unapproachable. But now, she was able to really study him. He had beautiful dark hair that was a bit longer than was the norm today, and knowing first hand when he is awake, he had the most amazing intense eyes ever. Every woman must envy him for having just steely grey eyes that seemed to pierce someone right to their soul. Angel couldn't help but shudder wantonly at the memory of how Cullen looked at her that day in the hospital when he kissed her.
Angel couldn't help but stare at his lips now. They were the most perfect lips a man could ever have, that were simply made for kissing—and for other things—but she couldn't let her mind wander off to those forbidden thoughts. Taking a deep breath, Angel decided to slowly try and get up. But every time she would move, Cullen tightened his hold on her. Finally getting a bit frustrated, Angel reached up and poked him hard a couple of times in the chest.
Cullen opened his eyes right away and without thinking, tightened his hold on Angel even more, in case of any danger.
"Ooof! Cullen, loosen up your hold on me! You're squeezing too tightly!" Angel, tried to scream out to him; but was finding it a bit hard, since she couldn't get enough air into her lungs.
Cullen, realizing what he was doing, let go of Angel right away, then helped her to sit up. "Sorry about that. Maybe next time you shouldn't be poking a werewolf like that when he is sleeping." Cullen stated, looking at Angel, not really sure how she would react.
Angel couldn't help but open her eyes wide at the word.
Werewolf!
How could she have forgotten about that BIG detail? Angel moved away from Cullen immediately, putting some distance between them. She turned to face him. "So... you're...you're a..." not being able to complete it, as it was so hard for her to actually say it.
Lifting his one eyebrow up at her, Cullen finished for her, "Werewolf?"
"Yes...werewolf."
They both sat there quietly, no one saying anything for a good few minutes.
Taking a deep breath, Angel refused to be scared. If he really wanted to kill her, wouldn't he have done it while she was passed out? Or for that matter, when she ditched him?
