"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Helmut cried out in disgust.

"Cousin!" Obeus called out again, "I believe this is a discussion we can easily have, in private." He urged. No one moved. Carter held his mate. He pulled the fabric of her shirt from her grip and smoothed it down.

"Please, cousin," the Merlin implored. He moved to usher Helmut, Finn, Carter, and Arthur out of the banquet room and into his audience chamber. The moment they exited, excited murmuring erupted behind them. This intrigue would be the talk of the house for weeks, if not months. Possibly years if nothing else as interesting occurred.

With the door closed, Malus Helmut made an extravagant show of lowering himself into a cushioned chair. He crossed his slender legs as he looked at his daughter. He smoothed over the lines of his robe, picked off stray hair and flicked it onto the rug. He had a self satisfied expression on his face. Carter, Finn and Arthur stood together, looking at Helmut. The hatred was evident on Finn and Arthur's hard faces.

"You will get nothing of me that you do not take by force," she stated flatly, before he had time to say a word.

"Why must you be so obstinate!?" Helmut screamed out. His fingers gripped the chair's arms with such force his knuckles turned white. The smile was gone from his face, replaced by a displeased expression.

"I wonder," she said, "perhaps because my entire back is a scarred reminder that if I allowed you to have your way, I would be a walking golem? My soul cleaved from my body, destroyed, so you can have a monster to do your perverse bidding? No will. No mind. A murderous being of flesh and bone with no pesky soul. Driven by your chosen impulses only? And we have seen the fruits of your impulses." The expression that touched her face was spiteful.

"Then perhaps I should take back my present," Helmut looked at Carter as he spoke, his eyes dark.

Arthur stepped in front of his son, "Helmut, please. Finn cannot give you what you are asking. It is not a matter of want, she is incapable. It has been years; she did not do this to spite you."

Finn snorted out a bitter laugh, "Didn't I?"

Art shot her an angry look. "You are not helping, sister," he chided harshly.

She grew quiet. She knew continuing to insult Helmut would end only with the death of her mate and her true family. "Just find another dark enchanter and have more children, Helmut. Though, perhaps raping your colleagues is a bad look. I am sure your sons would eagerly give you their children, they have craved your approval since their disgusting births. Why seek me out?" She tried, so desperately, to hold her tongue and failed.

Helmut's eyes turned black again and Finn began to shift. She placed Carter and Arthur securely behind her. Bones snapping and the sounds of rips rung out as she enlarged. "This discussion is at an end, for now. But know this daughter, I will have what I want from you. One way or another." He held up a finger and pointed it at her. Finn felt her heart drop and reverted to her normal size. She cried out once as the bones righted themselves in her smaller body.

Helmet hissed out words she couldn't fully understand, a dark portal ripped open the world before him. The edges of his doorway were the same wet obsidian colour as hers. He stepped through; his dark laboratory visible behind him. He looked back at his daughter before the portal closed, "you may have been strong enough with my magic in your blood to stop my ritual, but your mate would be powerless. You should remember my goodwill. My patience with you will not last forever, Fionn," and with that he was gone. His threat lingered in the air. There was no lingering mist but the smell of something rotten permeated the air around it.

After minutes passed, Arthur looked to Obeus. "Merlin, may we have the room?" He asked politely.

Obeus looked pale and nodded. He slipped out the door and closed it behind him gently. Another round of chatter picked up, the soft murmuring of gossip filtered in after him.

"Okay, we need to leave," Art said quietly, his voice constrained with fear.

"Yes, you both do," Finn agreed.

"I'm not going anywhere without you," Carter began but they both cut him off.

"It can't be true, can it?" Art asked Finn as he ignored his son's protests.

"What, that he bonded Carter to me? Of course, it's true! He raped Elspeth to produce a hybrid abomination for himself, thinking it would be as easy to control as his other offspring. When your dad and Anna took me in instead of culling me or leaving me out to die in the woods, it ruined his plans. He's spent years trying to get me to do his bidding," she pointed haphazardly towards her back with her thumb. "You think this was his only attempt? He knows he can control me through you, through Carter. I went sixty three years without a mate pull and when it happens, it's your son. Our bond couldn't have been natural, Art. You must see

that."

Her words wounded Carter. She felt the hurt, and turned her eyes to him. He looked down, refusing to meet her stare. She wanted to kiss him, hold him. But she couldn't shield him from the truth and keep him alive, she reminded herself.

"Carter, you need to reject me and break our bond. Return home. Helmut won't have sway over me with you then," she said.

"No!" He yelled. He was so tired of his father and Finn treating him like a child. He was going to be Alpha. He would protect his mate to his last breath. He grabbed her roughly by the shoulder. He ripped her collared shirt down slightly to uncover the scarred flesh. Two buttons popped at his motion, they had barely clung to the thread. Carter's mark stood out white and pink on Finn's tattooed skin, still raw. "You are MINE," he huffed. He pulled his shirt in the same manner. He tore the nice shirt's collar to expose his scarred mark from her. "And I am yours." His words were so earnest, they tore holes in Finn's very being. Her broken soul cried out for him.

Arthur coughed a little to remind them he was still there. "I'm just going to get the truck. I'll be waiting outside."

Finn was quiet as she watched Art leave. She looked at Carter when she heard the door shut. She needed to choose her words carefully. "Honey, I need you to reject me. To protect your father and your pack." As Carter was about to continue his protest, she gripped his head. She brought it close to hers and kissed him. Her kiss was deep, he tasted the iron of her blood from her encounter with Malus. "I am so, so sorry that this affected your ability to find your fated mate. Helmut must be stopped but I can't do that if I have to worry about you and your family." She tried to be as honest as she could. Tried to appeal to his Alpha instinct to protect his pack. "If you don't, we are all at risk. This isn't about us, it's about protecting the pack."

He looked defeated. He would always protect his family, at the expense of himself. It was his responsibility. He grabbed Finn and picked her up by her back end. He carried her to Obeus' desk and set her softly down. He ran his thumb over the scar on her bottom lip and kissed her. She kissed him back, a hand rested on his chest. "It'll get easier," she whispered into his mouth, steeling herself. "It won't hurt for long."

"I, Carter Amos Ironblood, future Alpha of pack Ironblood, reject you, Fionn Helmut, former member of the Ironbloods, rouge," he finished, dejected.

They both felt a flash of intense pain and cried out. Tears pooled in Finn's eyes as she breathed through the waves of hurt. It burned and cut at the same time, in the most sensitive places of her mind. Carter gripped her close to him, his breath laboured, his hand holding her neck as he tried to focus on only her. After a moment, when the ache receded, the truth became evident. Despite the ceremony and pain, their bond remained intact.

"How...?" he started to ask. Finn pushed him back to with her legs and placed her feet on the floor. She turned and ripped everything off Obeus' desk in a large flourish and screamed out as everything went crashing to the floor. "FUCKING WIZARDS!"

Her rage did not end there. Finn walked through the office and destroyed everything she could get her hands on. Bottles were smashed against the walls. Paintings and photographs were ripped from their homes and thrown to the ground. Elongated fingernails ripped down the elaborate walls and left deep indentations in their once smooth surface. She was about to pull the cabinet down to the floor when Joey entered the room.

"Enchanter Helmut, please contain yourself," he said in his wispy voice.

"FUCK YOU, JOEY!" She lunged, blinded by her own anger. Carter grabbed her from the air before she was able to tackle the smaller man and held her tightly to him.

"Stop! This won't accomplish anything," he bade her.

"It won't help but I'll feel fucking better," she cried out, trying to free herself from his grip without hurting him.

"No, you won't. You'll feel worse," he held her snuggly. She acceded, knowing he was right. Her muscles relaxed.

"Please see yourselves out, I have work to do," Joey said. He ushered them to the door and closed it behind them.

Finn roughly grabbed her mate's wrist and pulled him in the direction of the entrance. He stopped as she was about to step into the night air. He pushed her to the side, hidden behind the large doors. "I'm not leaving you!" he said, his face set with determination.

"You're not. You are leaving this wretched place. I will follow," she replied.

Carter pushed her against the wall and pressed himself into her. He kissed her again as he held her shoulders tightly. "When?" He asked into her mouth.

"A day or so."

Are you lying?" He asked through their bond. They both winced. It was painful and felt like burned flesh, raw and exposed to all of the elements. They were in untested waters. When wolves broke their bonds, they were free but the artificial bond was something new. Neither had any idea what would happen in the long run.

"I'm not lying. I'll come in a day or so," she said out loud.

Finn pulled Carter outside, pushed him into the open passenger door. Arthur closed it and looked at his sister. She shook her head. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, holding her as close to him as he could manage.

"It's not safe, you both need to leave. If anything happens, I'll come. Let Carter take the lead, he's a lot younger," she said to the older man. "If you see any Helmut, run. All of you. Just run."

Arthur nodded, still holding her close. Finally he released her. Carter had climbed into the driver's seat so Art opened the door and got into the passenger side. Finn closed the door, sticking her head in the open window. "No stops. Don't trust anyone. Go home."

She stood outside of the council house for a while after Art's truck had disappeared into the night. She had sent them away to protect them, but the reality was she wasn't sure anywhere would be safe. Malus was one of the most powerful enchanters the world had ever seen. He also had her brothers as de facto bodyguards. It was a problem of numbers. She was confident she could cut through her brethren, but the time and energy would leave her vulnerable to the main target. Arthur had offered to help, many years ago but an old wolf and a hybrid still weren't a match to eight dark enchanters. She sighed. It was the same problem she and Art had spent years trying to find a solution. She needed more information and she knew where she was going to get it. Unfortunately, though, not tonight.

She made her way back to her room, pushing bodies out of her way with no care. She stopped at the door, noticing the 'C.I.' had been added to the inscription. She growled and ripped her nails through the door's topcoat again. She immediately noticed the decor change when she entered the room. Finn pulled off the staff uniform she had worn and threw it into the fireplace. She crawled into the bed in her underwear, curled into a ball and fell asleep.

She woke before the sun had broken over the horizon. The council and its guests would be getting ready for bed, to continue the festivities in the evening. She knew the Merlin would finish business before retiring to his rooms to take his pleasures in his current partner. She got out of bed and quickly dressed in her clean, loose undergarments, her large black knit sweater and some stretchy leggings.

She didn't bother with shoes or the door. Rage filled her and she stoked that hated fire. Finn rushed through her large window. Glass exploded around her, tiny shards cut her skin as she jumped the two stories to the ground. She threaded her way through sleepy bodies and the council halls until she came to Obeus' office door.

She again did not knock. Instead, she kicked the door open, splinters flew from the wooden door and frame. His office had mostly been put back together from her outburst, the walls still needed attention and care, but the other items had been returned to their normal places. Obeus let out a startled cry as she closed the distance between the two of them in a heart's beat. She had shifted, her roomy clothes accommodated her enlarged form. She masked the pain by howling as she charged. She grabbed the Merlin by his neck and lifted him off the ground.

"Hello, Merlin," she growled out, her claws punctured his flesh. Before she allowed him to speak, she grabbed his right wrist and snapped it. His screams echoed off the walls. She let him fall to the floor, a blubbering pile. She reached down and gripped his non-broken arm. She held him tightly. She smiled though it was a demonic vision. Her lips curled around her long teeth, drool dripped down onto his hair and the rug at their feet.

"Fionn, love, please!" He pleaded, tears pooled in his eyes from the pain as well as her pungent smell.

"We are going to have a little talk, wizard. And if I don't like your answers, I am going to start peeling you like an orange." To punctuate her threat, she gripped his arm tighter. She ran a nail from her free hand up his flesh, slicing the skin like a scalpel.

"Please!" He cried again, "I had no choice!"

She slipped her nail into the exposed tissue and pulled, ripping away a small piece of his skin from his arm's muscle. Obeus let out a blood curdling scream. Finn smiled wider.

"We all have choices, mage, and I am about to illustrate why you made a poor one," she continued. "I have always wondered about the healing powers of enchanters. Feel free to continue to disappoint with your responses, I'd like to see how far I can go before you go into shock."

The Merlin sniffed, snot dripped down his lips and chin. He tried to keep his weeping quiet.

"Now, did you ask me to invite the Ironbloods at Helmut's request?" Twisting his bleeding arm.

"Yes!" he squeaked out.

"And what did my sire say to you, exactly?" She brought her face close to his, growling. He gagged.

"He said that he needed you to meet the alpha and his son!" Obeus cried.

"Enchanter Helmut, stop!" Screamed out Joey from behind her. He must have heard the Merlin screaming, she thought to herself. She didn't bother to look behind her at the growing crowd.

"And you sent me, without any knowledge of this. I already knew Arthur and Carter, why did I need to meet them again? Did he tell you why?" Fear grew more evident on the Merlin's face. "I would suggest not lying to me or the council will need a new Merlin."

"He... He..." Obeus tried but did not finish.

"Wrong answer, cousin," she said. Finn pushed all of the nails on her hand into the flesh of his arm, gripping the bone. She smiled wickedly and then snapped it. With a great pull, her muscles tensing, she ripped Obeus' arm from his body. His scream was feral. She slapped him with his own amputated limb. The surprise caused him to quiet for a moment.

"Why did my sire demand I meet Arthur and Carter?" Her shifted voice was like nails on a chalkboard. "You're running out of limbs," she reminded him, shaking his own limp amputated hand at him.

"He... he said... said he needed you to mate! And Carter had been chosen! Arthur was too old, and he knew you wouldn't have accepted a mate bond with him," Obeus was sweating profusely. He was also deathly white. Blood loss and fear were taking over, he was about to lose consciousness.

"Why, wizard!? Why did he need me to have a mate!" She hissed.

"He wanted your pup! He's found a way to transfer himself into a new body!"

"And why does he need a new body?"

"He's dying... he's too old. He can't produce any more children. You were his last chance. Your brothers are sterile like he is now," the Merlin wheezed out.

"Why me, Obeus? He has seven sons. Why me?"

"He wants your strength. You're his favourite. You're the only one he couldn't bound to himself. Your wish to fight him is the very thing he craves, independence. He thinks you are the key to his immortality. Please! Please don't hurt me anymore," he cried out, tears fell.

"I won't hurt you anymore, Obeus," Finn said. She smiled again at him, a cursed smile on a demon. She dropped his arm onto the ground, the blood stained his fancy rug, and released his broken wrist from her grasp. She shifted back to her normal body. All except her right hand. She kissed Obeus on the cheek, a look of relief flooded his features. "But I am going to keep my promise to Malus," she said as she thrust her right hand into his chest, nails tore away the flesh. Her fingers pushed through his breastplate with force, splintering it and cutting her hand in the process. She gripped his beating heart in her hand and squeezed until she felt it pop.

Finn left the body of Obeus Augustus where it landed. She walked out of his office, past the throngs of onlookers. She saw Joey was crying and felt sorry for the man. She had always assumed he was in love with the Merlin. She walked to the library. Instead of entering, she turned left and went down the partially hidden stairs to the laboratories. Once at the foot of the stairs, she took in her surroundings. The lab was a large room, filled with shelves. The shelves were filled with spell components, either in bottles or baskets for easy access. They were not set against the walls, instead being spread out on the floor of the lab. Each shelf and item upon the shelf had a name card, listing common names for the item as well as traditional spell uses. The walls were lined with doors. Each door had a placard with the assigned enchanter's initials. She stopped at the door 'E.S.'

She opened the door, surprising the room's two occupants. Eutus was on his knees, pleasuring a naked male vampire. Finn could smell his undeath, an oddly comforting aroma. She gracefully crossed the room, grabbed a pair of forgotten pants, threw them into the vampire's arms and pulled him from Eutus, pushing him out the door. She shut the door in his face and turned back to the enchanter.

"What in the bloody hells is wrong with you!?" Eutus screamed at her, now standing. He paled as he noticed all the blood on her hands.

"Obeus and I had a little chat. It didn't end so well for the wizard. You're up next, little one," she smiled at him, picking at her nails for emphasis.

Eutus reflexively stepped back away from Finn, his back against the far wall. Like prey trying desperately to get away from a too close predator.

Finn looked around his room, absentmindedly stating, "I'd keep your hands where I can see them, or I will rip one off. Possibly both. How effective would you be without hands, little mage?"

Eutus had a large desk, filled with books and scraps of paper. There was a large bookshelf that mostly housed old tomes but did include spell components neatly labeled. The dark walls had sigils carved into it, the meanings lost on her. A bulky plush chair had been pushed out of the way.
