I have returned :) After quite a few difficult years real life has settled down into a better place and I find I can once more concentrate on writing again. I will endeavour to ensure that new chapters will post much more frequently, and thank you all for being so understanding as you waited for the story to continue. #yourock

Chapter Thirteen

"How many did you scent?" Demetri asked quietly, deep green eyes peering into the forested mountainside ahead of them.

"Seven," Freya answered her own gaze alert as she too swept the surrounding area, her mate in wolf form, large and black beside her. "They're all Elder vampires but it's hard to tell how old."

She looked at the wolf for a moment and then turned back to her brother and Demetri. "Dayton says we're about an hour behind Dara's group. The vampires tracking them are hanging back about thirty minutes or so from them."

They had made the decision that he would travel in his wolf form and Freya would carry his clothes in their backpack. It was impractical for him to shift every time to speak so he passed on his thoughts through their mate bond, and she relayed to the others.

"I didn't scent any more to the left," Nors commented, throwing a question glance Joshua's way.

The European vampire shook his blond head. "I veered further left and went higher up than Nors. It's clear in that direction too."

Demetri had taken the right side once they'd passed the last clearing Dara's group had stopped at. He had scented the vampires the others had but no one further out. It seemed they could reasonably agree that they were only dealing with a handful of trackers following their packmates.

Nors rolled his shoulders and let out a slow breath. "So, do we attempt to capture this lot and get some intel, or do we just take them out?"

"Dara's last call to Rafe said they were almost at their attack point. We can't have even a handful of enemies targeting their backs," Demetri replied. It would have been good to find out just who their big bad was, but they needed to prioritise getting everyone back safely.

Freya smiled, her beautiful face lighting up in a way that would terrify any enemy in her path. She tilted her head in Dayton's direction again and laughed softly. "It's nothing I need translate," she admitted, with a rueful smile.

"Your mate's enjoyment of your blood lust leaves me to wonder at his sanity," her brother retorted, but there was a hint of eagerness in his own tone, as if he too was relishing the chance to kick some much-needed ass.

Truth be told, it did feel unnatural not to indulge in their more feral sides every now and then, and the group had been living a peaceful existence for a long time, with the exception of Demetri who had been in Europe not that long ago, saving Pietro's life.

"I'll come in from the right, and you come in from the left, Nors," Demetri instructed. "Freya, and Dayton can move in head on. Between the four of us it shouldn't take long to take down the trackers. Just try to do it quickly, before they get the chance to alert anyone to our presence."

The European vampire eyed him questioningly. "Will I be filing my nails while you're all busy?"

Demetri shot him a small smile. He trusted Joshua, and in no way doubted his ability to assist them taking down the other vampires, but he needed him for something else. "If you're that way inclined," he chuckled lightly.

As his friend glared at him, he shook his head "No, I need you to survey a good hiding place for the bodies and then get rid of them until we can come back and deal with them properly. We don't need any other vampires stumbling on them before the rescue mission has been completed."

It was hard to argue with his logic when it made perfect sense. Joshua nodded his agreement and disappeared to find a suitable location.

"And that's why Demetri is in charge of the mission and not you, sister," Nors smiled. "You'd leave the bodies lying around for all to find." He enjoyed baiting his sister. She could be counted on to rise to it.

Her frosty glare speared him, widening his smile.

"Keep it up, brother, and there might be one more body to hide," she replied sweetly. Freya followed up her words by bumping her hip against his to take the sting from her words. "Don't get dead, Nors. That would piss me off."

Her brother hooked an arm around her neck, pulling her in for a quick hug. "Try to keep the crazy to a minimum. Ash will have my head on a plate if I come home without you."

The siblings separated, Freya's hand running through Dayton's midnight black fur. She nodded to Demetri, and then they took off into the trees ahead.

"Let try to get this done as quickly as possible," Demetri said. "We need to be close to the others when they launch their attack."

Nors took off towards the left and Demetri headed left, moving swiftly through the trees to intercept the hunters who didn't know they had suddenly become the hunted.

~~~~~
Freya flew across the ground, her steps silent despite the rough terrain. On her right Dayton kept pace with her, his wolf form sleek and beautiful as he bounded at her side as silent as she was. The thrill of the hunt was upon her, and she gloried in the feel of the air rushing over her, the scent of her prey in front of her. It had been far too many years since she had hunted.
They had been good years; she couldn't deny that. She had met her mate and experienced the joy of bringing her daughter Elina into the world. But there was always a part of her deep down that missed this feeling, that craved the chance to let go of humanity and enjoy the thrill of being one of the most ruthless predators on the planet. Now she could be that predator, and she relished the chance to protect her family and packmates. These vampires would rue the day they messed with the Armand-Hanlon pack, and she would enjoy being a part of their downfall.
"Two are moving left and two right. That leaves three ahead of us."
Dayton remarked through their mate bond.
"I'm amazed these vampires have survived so long,"
Freya replied, disgust infusing her tone.
"They're not that noisy, Freya,"
Dayton chuckled, amused at her distain. His mate had very high standards for her kind and was never impressed when vampires let her down.
She turned to give him a withering gaze.
"Seriously? You can't hear them? The one on the far left has a slight hitch in his right leg. If we attack from the right it will give him less time to adjust, and the one in the middle is like a bull in a china shop the way he's stepping on twigs."
Dayton pressed his hearing and gave a rueful chuckle. Now he knew what to listen for he could hear it too. As always his mate was correct.
"I can't hear anything from the one on the left,"
he noted.
"Yes, he will be one to watch, a bit more of a challenge,"
she conceded, anticipation lacing her mental tone at the prospect of at least one half-decent opponent.
"I can't feel them moving faster than before,"
Dayton commented.
"I don't think they've sensed us."
In his wolf form he could sense vibrations in the earth as well as having heightened scent and vision.
Freya increased her speed.
"Good. They likely are trying to get closer to Dara's group. That means the main team must be almost at their target. These fools are so busy looking forward they've forgotten the most important rule of tracking...never forget to look behind."
A mental laugh sounded in her head.
"You're disgust at their ineptitude is escalating, my love,"
her mate replied.
"Surely you should be happy? They are making our mission easier for us."
"They're an embarrassment to the vampiric world,"
she huffed back.
"Fools like them deserve to lose their heads."
She cut off as they closed in on their quarry. They had to rapidly formulate a plan. Dayton was a formidable wolf, but they both knew that he would be more of a distraction for the other vampires than a main hindrance. If he got too close to the vampires, they could wound him severely with their talons.
"When we reach them, I will select a vampire to deal with. You go for the legs of the next closest vampire and try to hamstring them. You'll need to move fast because number three will be on you faster than you can blink. Try and don't get impaled on any talons. The entire mountain will discover we're here if you get yourself hurt, Dayton."
"I'm faster than the wind,"
he laughed.
"They won't know what has hit them."
Freya rolled her eyes at his bravado and gripped his neck fur tightly.
"Stay safe, mate. I love you."
"And I love you. Now let's go hunting, my love."
With a kick of speed, Freya upped their pace, scenting the three vampires ahead of them and zeroing in on the one slightly behind the other two. She reached him just as they became aware that there was danger from behind, all three turning as a unit to confront the danger.
Their stupidity was their mistake, and the first vampire's head rolled from his shoulders before they could react other than turn around. Freya's blood-soaked talons were reaching for the second male, as Dayton darted forward and sank his powerful jaws into the third male's thigh, yanking hard enough to rip out flesh and muscle, the vampire shrieking as he fell backwards to the ground.
There went the element of surprise.
Freya paused long enough to hope Nors and Demetri had reached their targets before they were alerted to danger, and then she ducked a blow intended to take her head, impressed by the speed of her current prey. This vampire was clearly older than the other two, and she relished the challenge of having an adequate foe.
"Who are you?" he hissed, fangs elongated, and talons ready to pierce flesh.
"Your worst nightmare," Freya smiled, darting to the right, and then feigning a left move. Her opponent fell for it, adjusting his own attack to meet her, but she had shifted right again, coming up behind him, crushing his throat with her talons.
"You picked the wrong side, foolish vampire, and now you will pay the price." With a flick of her wrist, his head tumbled to the ground, surprise still etched on his once handsome face.
"Uhm, a little help here please, Freya?"
She swung around to see Dayton darting around the third vampire who was missing various chunks of flesh from his legs and abdomen but was healing quickly enough to keep trying to catch the wolf attacking him. There was a long gash down her mate's left side which told her the vampire had gotten close enough at least once to use his talons.
Fury flooded her and a low guttural hiss escaped her lips. "You laid hands on my mate?" she spat, flying towards them, and punching her fist through the vampire's back.
Blood pumped out, the male's legs collapsing as he let out a loud keening wail coming to kneel before her. Freya glared at Dayton, her breath panting out loudly, before she pulled her hand out of the vampire and pointing a long talon at the wolf.
"I told you not to get too close," she hissed furiously. "Why don't you ever listen to me?" Seeing his blood was the one sure-fire way to strip away her humanity and bring her beast to surface, and she was battling everything within to cool the fury flowing though her blood.
The vampire tried to scramble away, thinking she was distracted. She brought her foot down hard on his back, crushing the base of his spine ignoring his pained cries, as she continued to glare at her mate.
Dayton shifted, uncaring of the fact that he was naked. Weres didn't care too much about clothes, and it was clear that Freya was on the tipping edge. "It's just a scratch, Freya," he sighed, wiping at the blood on his side. "Look, it's healing already and isn't too deep. It's nothing to be concerned about. He was sneaking up behind you, so I needed to distract him."
The feral glare began to soften, and Freya took another deep breath as she examined her mate and assured herself that he didn't have any life-threatening injuries. "Fine," she finally said looking down at the healing vampire under her foot. "I should still tear this bastard limb from limb though."
A lazy smile crossed Dayton's handsome face, and he pushed back the long silver streak of hair that fell across his brow. "Best not to play with your prey, love," he answered." We need to check in with the others and make sure they're okay."
He had a valid point, so she didn't waste any time decapitating the last vampire.
Freya had a fraction of a second to register Dayton's expression of humour turn to abject horror before excruciating pain ripped through her chest and her head dropped forward to see blood-soaked talons protruding from her torso. She had no time to think any coherent thoughts as her knees buckled and she collapsed to the forest floor.
Somewhere in the distance she could hear an agonising cry. She thought it was Dayton calling her name but couldn't be sure as her vision was blurry and there was a dull ringing in her ears that was slowly getting worse as the pain in her body escalated to higher levels. Someone was looming over her from behind, someone who was digging more talons into the side of her neck, trying to remove her head from her body.
Freya wanted to fight back, needed to fight back for Dayton, but the damage done to her body was too severe. The first blow had severed her spinal column, causing all her limbs to become inoperable, and the talons in her neck were swiftly cutting through bone and tendons. There was nothing she could do to defend herself, nothing she could do to defend her mate.
A tear rolled down her cheek as her vision faded. She wouldn't see Dayton or Elina again. She was destined to die on the side of this godforsaken mountain, but at least she had known what true happiness was, that she had loved and been loved, and had the most beautiful child in the world. She could only hope that Dayton somehow survived this attack, that he could make it home to their daughter and comfort her when she learned what had happened.
"I'm sorry, Dayton,"
Freya pushed the last of her mental energy to her mate.
"Stay alive for Elina, my love. She will need you more than you can realise. Please don't leave her alone. Stay alive for our daughter."
There was no response, but she was fading so fast she didn't think she would have heard her mate even if he did reply. She could only hope he heard her through his grief and did as she asked. He loved Elina as much as she did. She had to believe that he would stay grounded for their daughter.
Blackness was consuming Freya, and she couldn't fight it any longer. Her breath rasped out in a pool of blood, a roaring in her ears deafening as her consciousness faded.
The roaring continued, louder, and more ferocious. For some reason that struck her as odd that it was getting louder. Surely her hearing should have been diminishing by now. Wasn't that what happened when you died?
A moment past and then Freya realised that she could hear screaming above the roars. It was a male screaming in terror and in pain, and she became aware that the talons within her were now gone from her body. She sucked in an agonised breath and became aware that her fingers were twitching. Her vampiric healing was kicking in, her spine coming back together allowing her limbs to come back to life.
She had no idea what was going on or why she was being given this reprieve, but she was going to take it. With agonising slowness, she managed to bring her hand up to the side of her neck, feeling the wide cut almost severing her head and trying to press against the wound to help it seal shut.
The screaming was now silent, but the ferocious roaring continued unabated. Whatever was making that sound was wild and feral, and she didn't want to make any sudden movements until she was more healed and able to defend herself.
"Dayton!"
There was no answer to her mental call. Freya tried not to think the worst, but it was hard after they had been so easily ambushed. There was no way her mate would have just stood there and let her be attacked without trying to help her. He had to be okay. She just couldn't exist without her mate.
"Freya, don't move!"
"Nors!"
Everything had happened so fast she had completely forgotten her brother and her friends were close by. Now that her senses were coming back as she slowly healed, she could scent them close but holding back for some reason. It vaguely registered as odd however she was more concerned that her mate wasn't answering her.
"Can you see Dayton, Nors? I've called to him, but he isn't responding. Do you know where he is? Is he okay?"
More roars echoed above her, and she tried to turn her head to see what was making the noise.
"Don't!"
her brother screamed inside her mind.
"Don't move even a fraction of an inch, Freya. There's a...a bear I think standing right over you. It's hard to tell what it is as it seems like it's a hybrid of some sort. I don't know who attacked you but whoever it was is now in a thousand pieces scattered all around you. Whatever this thing is, it's powerful enough to dismember a vampire so please stay as quiet and still as possible. There's no way we could reach you before it shredded you to pieces."
She could hear terror in her brother's mental voice and that was enough to cause her to freeze. Nothing frightened Nors Eriksson, nothing until today that was. What kind of creature was it that he couldn't accurately describe it? She didn't think it was the creature that had caught her unawares, she recalled seeing vampire talons punching through her body.
Had the creature gotten Dayton? Was that why he wasn't answering her? Just the thought brought a strangled whimper from her throat, and she froze further as warm breath suddenly wafted over her hair.
"No!" Nors tortured groan caused the creature to utter a loud, threatening roar in his direction.
Without thinking what she was doing, Freya mentally projected towards the creature without looking at it.
"It's okay,"
she whispered softly.
"Nors is my brother. He's a friend. Demetri and Joshua are my friends too. They're not a threat."
She wasn't expecting her words to make any sense to the creature, but she was hoping that it would soothe some of its agitation as it hadn't growled at her when she whimpered, not like it had when Nors spoke. She carefully turned her head, relieved that her neck wound was almost healed, and the pain was manageable. She found herself looking into a pair of deep blue eyes she recognised so well. What she didn't recognise was the bear shaped face crowned with wolf ears and blood-soaked fangs.
The creature sniffed at her neck, its hot breath fanning her face as she held her breath. There was no recognition in its eyes, and yet she felt no threat from it. Somewhere deep down in the inner recess of the creature's brain there must have been a small spark of something that told this strange hybrid that she was of some importance to it.
Freya had no idea what was going on, but she was certain of one thing. The creature had Dayton's eyes. This creature was her mate who had somehow been transformed into some type of wolf/bear hybrid. How this could have happened was beyond her comprehension, however it had, and the hybrid was feral, seeing everyone other than herself as a threat. She had to reach her mate and calm him down. She had to bring him back to her, she just wasn't sure how.
"Nors, you all need to stay completely still and do not under any circumstances make any sudden moves or attempt to attack this creature. It's Dayton."
