Author's Note:
This was intended to be a short 15 minute writing practice. Well, things got away from me again, and we now have another entry for the
750 Word Project - 2025
. This time we've got an anthropomorphic raccoon creature, a Bohpoli, and tentacle vines. Enjoy. This story after this note is exactly 750 words. If you want to see any of these short-shorts expanded, let me know in the comments.
All that was in the package was the key and the note from her late sister. Shaui looked at the package wrapping. There was nothing special about it, it was simply plain cloth and twine. There were no stains on the cloth, so the blood on the key had dried a long time ago. That it was dried and brown made that much obvious. The note from Wotko was strange, her sister had passed almost five years ago, when they were still children. But strange was a relative term, especially when she had been chosen to run messages between the realms of the living and the dead.
Shaui touched the amulet that hung around her neck, which allowed her to travel between the realms. She could try to find Wotko and ask, but finding a specific person in the land of spirits and shadows was always something easier said than done. She looked around in the dim light. There wasn't much to be seen, just a stone corridor stretching on with no end in sight; the large wooden door before her, and the soft glow of the portal she had just come through. She could go back to Earth, just to have time to think. Some instant noodles might be nice. None of her spells would really help her find Watko and her spirit could be anywhere in the realm.
She should take her late sister's warning seriously. She knew she should but something about that door was calling her. Shaui wanted to put the key in the lock and just take a peek, but there was the warning. Normally she just took things like food offerings or spirit money from the land of the living to the land of the dead, not the other way around. But the amulet had flared and opened the portal in the kitchen of her mod box house, and when she stepped through this package had been there with her name on it. This was all highly irregular.
"Watko, if you're listening, we need to talk." She shouted out.
As if in answer, she heard a moaning type noise from the door. She rubbed the black fur around her eyes. Being able to change between a small human form and her natural raccoon-like animal form, had been useful today since the amulet hadn't exactly waited for her to get dressed before opening the portal. The moans sounded again, louder. It could be someone in pain who needed help, or, well they did kind of sound like the moans in that video she was watching earlier. Without having a boyfriend or girlfriend she didn't have many other options than online vids when
