Chapter 10 - Hellfire

Poison seeped through Alice's veins robbing her of her senses. In a haze she saw three blurry figures standing above her, a strange static accompanied the sight before darkness encroached once more.

Alice's thoughts were muddled, abyssal darkness stretched over everything with the only sensation reaching her a persistent chill down her spine. She awoke next vibrating, her head bounced landing back onto the firm cushion behind her. She was moving, above her glass windows held blurry shades of green and blue. The static began once more and as her vision began to fade once more, Alice caught sight of the sun, her last scattered thought was simply a wish to see it again.

Alice's head hit the mud hard, dragging her back from the comfort of the void she was growing used to. The dull throb from her nose and the warm trickle down across her lips did nothing to come close to the ache she felt to her very core. Her limbs finally had feelings and it was agony, the fire pulsing through her veins had been extinguished, replaced by Icy shards that seemed to creep along her entire body, down her limbs, back to her heart, and then begining the cycle once more.

Arms came from behind Alice and she had no energy to fight them off. Being hoisted into the air, two men stood either side of her holding her weight between them. She tried to speak, to ask what was happening, where she was, where her dad was and if they knew who she was. Struggling to tilt her head forward as the men began to drag her limp form through the mud, she was able to answer two of her questions. Her father was leading the men who had taken her, he had drugged her. Before she could focus on the betrayal of her own kin Alice noticed the familiar red wood of her grandparents cabin. So many of the best memories Alice held of her childhood had happened here, baking with her grandmother, her mum taking her on picnics into the surrounding wood, her and Chris playing near the flower beds, seeing all of the different butterflies attracted to the area.

Now she felt a pit of dread grow in her stomach at the sight of the defaced cabin. The flowerbeds all lay dead and trampled, the trees all bare of branches and leaves, the cabins windows boarded up, and the wine cellar door her father had just opened had blood stained into the old wood. Alice tried to fight against the grip on her arms, but the ache in her veins turned her attempted attacks into limp pulls and flicks, her tail barely getting off the floor before the spaded tip fell back into the mud, further sullied.

Alice felt her feet thud against each step as she was carried down into the cellar. Reaching the bottom Alice saw the once well stocked cellar barren and damaged, and her father at the end of it moving a wooden board from a makeshift frame revealing the earth and stone making up the tunnel beyond. True panic began to rise in Alice, she could feel her breathing picking up but no amount of effort could get her limbs to cooperate.

Her father stopped the men at the entrance to the tunnel, "we take it to the circle and find John he'll tell us how to proceed." The men nodded in response but were stopped once again as her father insisted, "it is not to go to the cells and don't lay a finger on it, Azeal is to purify it, understand?"

He was met with slightly more reluctance this time but eventually got a stiff nod from the men. Her father stepped aside, allowing to drag her deeper into the cabin's depths as he followed willingly behind.

Alice felt a pulsing chill down her spine and Lilith's comforting yet urgent tone filled her mind.

"Alice, don't speak aloud. You've been poisoned and it's paralytic. I'm going to release the hold I've had over the changes in your body. You need to focus the power inside you to fight its spread."

Alice didn't respond straight away, confusion and the poison haze still clouding her mind. She tried to speak but felt a groan slip her lips and nothing else. Feeling Liliths chill once more she tried to respond in her thoughts. "What's happening, why did my dad..."

Alice felt the chill pulse as Lilith responded more urgently

"I don't know where you are but there are celestial magics staining the air here, it's making maintaining this connection more difficult than usual. Regardless, wait, wait until you have power over your body again and unleash everything that has bottled up inside you, do not hesitate."

Alice felt Lilith slip from her mind once again going silent and leaving her to contemplate her words as she slowly took in her surroundings again, a door had just been opened in front of her leading her out onto a balcony. The men still carrying her remained stoic, which was a contrast to the people gathered at the base of the cavern. The cave was surprisingly well lit and Alice could see clearly to the deepest part of the cave revealing a still pool of water with many overhanging stalactites. Alice was leant against the fence barring the drop into the cave as one of the men proceeded down a wooden ladder built into the wall, from her new angle she could see clearly the group of people laughing shouting, most concerningly was the bearded man seemingly preaching to them. John. Before Alice could take in the ramifications of her exe and her fathers roles in her abduction the man left with her at the top pulled her from the fence and with little hesitation dropped her over the side into the waiting arms of the guard who had descended first. Thankfully the poison numbed the pain when he only managed to grab her shoulders causing her lower half to crash into the stone floor.

Alice was soon being dragged between the two men once again and upon looking up two things became apparent. Lilith was watching through her eyes once more, and all of the SDF members, including John, stood staring at her with a mixture of expressions. The looks of disgust and anger slid right off her, she had gotten used to those stares whenever she passed the picketers outside of the club. The only one that worried her was Johns, his clear excitement as she was carried before them was enough to shake her.

"Alice we can deal with this reprobate, but can you look down a moment." Liliths voice chimed in Alice's head but the words were lost on her, as they came to a stop Alice could do nothing but look into the eyes of her ex boyfriend, who looked back in manic glee.

"Alice, baby. It is good to see you here. You know after that toss you gave me I was starting to think we'd never be on the same side again, that you were lost to this demonic filth you've accepted into yourself. But there's hope, our friend Azeal has promised us a way to rid the corruption that festers within you, save your soul from eternal damnation. There's hope for you yet." John proclaimed, yet some of his fellow members of his hate group didn't seem to share his enthusiasm. Alice tried to speak but failed to get anything more than a groan out of her lips.

"Now, now, don't push yourself too hard, it's going to be a strenuous day ahead. Azeal is an Angel, Alice, an honest to God, Angel. He's told us about his service to God, to Jesus. He's promised us all a place at his side when the work on Earth is done, and he promised me you, pure again. We just need you to do one tiny favour for us." John finished by waving his hand which signalled the two men to unceremoniously drop Alice to the floor in a heap.

It took a worrying amount of effort but Alice was able to move her hands enough to push her off the ground slightly. Looking down she saw red lines and glyphs painted into the rocky terrain, the symbols looked jagged, infernal. Panic once more at the symbols which seemed to circle her was quickly ebbed away by the relief in Liliths voice.

"Alice, look behind you now." Lilith ordered but excitement overcame any force in her voice.

None of the people standing around Alice seemed to care as she slowly tilted her body taking in the full painting, it was a circle, intricate rings of infernal looping into the next, the centre bearing a single large curved rune, yet nothing like she had seen in her lessons on the language and text.

"Alice, this is, this is perfect." Lilith stuttered, the first time her speech had been anything less than absolute and precise. "We can use this, by Sameal, its a gateway to my prison. Deal with them, you're far more durable than you think, once you get a chance to strike and we can work this gate together."

Alice blinked at the speed Lilith dumped all this new information.

"But you're dead, what the fuck is this, some like portal to the afterlife?" Alice thought as loudly as she could.

"I have never said I was dead." Lilith replied, joy still present.

"Well you certainly let me fucking think so. If I get through this we're having a word about your constant desire to feed morsels of information to me only when it's about twenty minutes too late." Alice exclaimed, anger evident in her mind but not on her face.

Lilith did not get a chance to respond before John spoke once more.

"So you see what we're working with. Azeal says that you'd have the ability to destroy this, whatever it is, nothing we've tried works, the rocks themselves seem to be almost indestructible. Regardless, do that and we can purify you and exorcise whatever evil is riding your body." John looked on expectantly as he finished and so did the rest of the members.

Alice paused looking around, she had no idea how to do anything with the portal, the infernal design a mystery to her, what gave her some hope though was the realisation that she could see the swirling auras of those surrounding her, a thick red miasma spreading through the air, not a single one was free from the clutches of their own wrath.

"So. Destroy it, do you need anything?" John asked expectantly.

"Stall them, you're almost recovered enough to fight." Lilith whispered in her mind.

Alice tried her voice once again coughing but was able to weakly whisper. "Erm, yeah. I'd need a chisel and hammer, some incense, and five candles." Alice said looking up to her father, the false confidence she tried to exude falling flat.

As her father opened his mouth to speak, Alice missed the man to her right, swinging his fist toward her jaw until the last second. The blow felt blunted still by the poison in her veins but did little to stop the momentum from carrying her back to the floor and blood welling her mouth.

"She's fucking playing us, Azeal said her power would destroy it." The man exclaimed now looming over her.

Alice saw her father cringe at the hit but did nothing to stop it from coming again as the man's boot connected to Alice's side, the pain spreading from her rib burning through the numbness she had felt.

"Maybe she just needs some motivation, Angela, you wanna pull feeds from interrogation. Subject D6." John ordered.

Alice watched as the woman walked towards one of the pillars in the room, a small stack of boxes to its side and from its surface she plucked a tablet. Walking back to the group Alice watched warily as she swiped away at the device before passing it to John who unceremoniously dumped it with a video playing at Alice's side.

Alice watched on in confusion as she saw footage of a grey room with a dirt floor. The walls were littered in red writing, what looked to be mostly infernal to her and in the corner of the room almost hidden in shadow she saw a faint figure bent over painting more words on the wall.

The video had sound and a feint murmer could be heard as the camera watched the hunched figure for a few minutes before a large mechanical clunk sounded and a bright distorted figure entered the room. It was hard to work out what she was looking at but a small pit formed in her stomach as the mix of golden and white tones left a pixelated humanoid figure walking into the room.

The hunched figure sounded human, her head poking up from her position but never turning around. Alice couldn't see anything inhuman about her except for the guttural infernal she was shouting at the being behind her, her voice sounding almost familiar.

White noise responded to the woman, a piercing sound to which the hunched figure audibly snarled at whatever was being said by the mysterious figure. They seemed to have an unintelligible back and forth but shortly the distorted figure seemingly raised an arm towards the woman and for a brief second the woman turned and her face was visible to the camera. As a bright light filled the camera, a piercing noise followed by screams erupted from the tablet and Alice watched in horror as the defiant face replayed in her mind over and over.

It took only seconds but with Alice's mind playing on repeat she felt like it had been an eternity but as the light died out and the distorted figure left the room Alice was left to stare at the burned and twisted corpse of her mother as the video paused briefly before looping back to the beginning.

"So you see Alice, Azeal is not patient, guess it's not his virtue, ha." John continued speaking but Alice just stared at the looping video unable to look away. Hundreds of questions circled her head and as they all spiralled around and around she felt the same anger that had once almost consumed her reared its head. As the video hit its third loop she felt herself be struck again, shouting filled the cave but nothing got through to Alice, the anger taking a hold of her body and spreading through her quicker than the angel's poison had.

Alice felt a kick hit her stomach as she was rolled onto her back and staring at the caves ceiling stalagmites looking down upon her she realised it was time for her to strike. Her attention filtering back to those around her though she saw the group moving mostly away from her towards the entrance she had come from. Looking over she saw Levash twist and pull three daggers from a man's throat, the spurt of blood erupting from the wound splattered against his chest as he swung into the next victim. The sight of his violence sent a feral thrill through Alice's wrath-addled mind.

Sitting up Alice wanted to join in, to help him against the mortals but before she could rise thick arms wound themselves around her waist pulling her backwards.

"Adam, listen to me you need to destroy the markings, Azeal said he'd only purify you if you did. He's not what I'd expect from an Angle; he won't want to wait." Her fathers voice came from behind as she was wrestled backwards towards the markings. Alice tried to push her way out but still found herself weakened from the ordeal.

"Get your fucking hands of me." Alice growled out as Levash tore the throat from one of her attackers.

"Adam this isn't you, you can't still be saved, please, you have to do this, for me."

"Get rid of him, Levash will be fine with the few mortals. The gate will be a blood seal, and why they've been so invested in exterminating my line."

Alice continued to struggle digging her nails into the underside of Lloyds arms, he winced, loosening his grip enough for Alice to push herself away from him leaving her unsteady on her feet.

"For fuck sake you can't stay like this, your mum was ill. John shouldn't have shown you that but we couldn't help her. Azeal said he can help you!" Lloyd moved towards her his arms in front of him. Alice staggered backwards but struggled to make any distance with the ache growing in her bones.

"I know you know this but there's no cure. Only death. If you can deal with-"

"All I want is for us to be a family again, Azeal can-"

"To the seal, I can translate any of the infernal and when I'm free we can-"

"Be damned to hell, nothing will be able to bring you back from th-"

Alice snapped as Lloyd got closer, the two voices overwhelming her already frayed senses. "Can you both please just be fucking quiet." Alice screamed trying to turn from her father and close Lilith out to quiet their incessant talking. Alice felt her fathers calloused grip tug at her wrist and as she turned to get him off she felt her father strike her face with his palm. The force knocking her off her feet and successfully silencing everything.

Alice felt the sting on her cheek, the ache in her ribs, blood pooling in her mouth. Her veins burned with the remnants of the celestials poison. Her legs were bruised and throbbed from the drop and looking up she saw the mortals face who had dragged her here. Who had handed her over to these pathetic hate filled idiots who think they can purify one of Lilith's children. Who had betrayed her mother and watched as she burned. He continued to shout at her, spittal flying from his mouth as his words went unheard, all Alice could see was the red swirl of wrath that had infested in his soul, that which had corrupted him long before she became a demon, before her mother left. She could taste the impotent rage he had held within him ever since supernaturals had revealed themselves in the world, how his wife's fascination had turned into emasculation. How her own coming out had been internalised within him as yet more failure, and as both the women in his life left, pushed away by his hate, he had grown bitter, lonely and angry. Taken advantage of by an extremist group where he hesitated at first but quickly grew numb to the hate around him. And now as he stood above Alice, she could see all the cracks in his delicate soul, where wrath had filled in the gaps, and she could consume it all. Reaching up Alice gripped his shirt tearing a button open and as she laid her fingers on the bare skin she felt the connection be made.

Devouring his soul truly was a feast, so much lay corrupted by wrath she found little that couldn't immediately be devoured. In the moment the mortal stood still, shocked, the chill seeping into his body, the numbness spreading through his limbs, the chaotic swirl of thoughts slowing to a silent void. Alice quickly finished leaving very little in the way of a soul behind but she wasn't done. Focusing on the present she looked to the mortal, she knew every little thing that had driven him to this point, each moment he felt rage and anger boil within him, and she incensed him with the memories of each one, his mind filled with nothing but them on repeat.

A cruel smile sat on her face as she kept fanning the flames of wrath within, reminding him of his wife's imagined infidelity, her own demonic corruption, all his failures. Feeling more and more of his soul corrupt under her touch, she couldn't help but laugh as she went, losing focus on any of the pains that littered her body previously as she watched the mortal's eyes go glassy. Alice felt the last sliver of his soul be absorbed within her as he slumped under her touch, removing her hand, she watched as he fell backwards to the floor, unflinching with the force with which he hit the packed dirt. Pulling back Alice sat on her haunches, she felt good, better than, she felt incredible. Far better than she has ever felt while feeding. Looking back to the unfeeling mortal she saw nothing more than a living husk. He still drew breath, but he was unaware of anything. His blank gaze just staring forward.

As she continued to take in the husk watching black veins snake along his chest under the shirt working along his arms and across his neck, she felt a hand fall gently on her shoulder causing Alice to flinch as she turned, taking in the bloodied form of Levash.

"I,I..." Alice paused, confused his appearance, snapping her partially from her haze. "What did I do?"

Levash turned from her before responding, she looked back to her father who remained as lifeless as he had before.

"Alice, I'm sorry to rush you but we need to move quickly. We're not safe here. I can explain everything when we're on our way home"

Levash reached up looking like he might grab her cheek but hesitated before dropping his hand. The action made Alice question her actions for the first time.
