Chapter 9 - Wrath

Levash parked the old car two streets away from his destination, not wanting the spluttering

engine to alert anyone at the property. The neighbourhood was still, the silence feeling almost intimidating. No sign of the riots that flooded the capital, no signs of any supernaturals other than himself wandering the dim streets, and not a single human willing to risk being outside in it regardless. Levash had got used to the constant noise that funnelled through the city, no matter where you were, you could hear life continuing despite everything. In Brighton, in this neighbourhood, not even the insects made a warble.

As Levash turned onto another barren street he checked his phone once more, seeing the address and subsequently his target house just up ahead, and also seeing that Alice's location still hadn't been back online since just after sunset. Not willing to go down that thought path Levash shook himself from his reverie and looked to the house that sat in darkness and pondered the best way to get in. The gardens on the property were large, and looking between the houses all seemed to be well decorated, it was a risk, but with most humans scared to even look out of their windows at night, lest they be snared by a vampires magic, hopefully most wouldn't investigate a noise in the back garden.

His suspicion had been right, after hoping the first gate he found about six properties up from his target house, a light flicked on illuminating the entire garden. He waited for a moment, hearing movement within the house, and a slight shuffle of some blinds on the second floor, but no one peaked out and eventually the noises within settled as the light dimmed and the garden fell back into darkness. Sticking close to the wall Levash managed not to trigger the light again until he was mid hopping over the night fence and thankfully the rest of the gardens did not seem to have similar lights, or at least not ones that worked. Reaching the property next door to his target he was thankful the garden he sat in was mostly overgrown, and the fences separating the properties rotted. Peering through a hole in the damp wood he watched the property for any movement, and his improved senses could pick up nothing. No signs of life from Alice's fathers house.

After a quick scan of the surrounding properties revealed no one hiding in ambush, Levash did one final jump over the fence, the panel creaking under his weight and landing in the garden. He quickly cut his way across reaching the back wall pausing again by the door but it was unnecessary. The house was silent, no noise, no telltale heat of a Demon within, and no hints of any souls within. Unsurprisingly Alice's father had lied to him on the phone, but the fact that they had already moved on from this property was unsettling to say the least. Gripping the rusted door handle, Levash found it locked and a slow application of force twisted the handle, hearing the grind of old metal sliding and catching against each other as the locking mechanism began to snap under his strength. With one final jerk the lock snapped within the door beginning to fall open to the dark home.

Slipping within, Levash decided against using any light in the house so as not to alert anyone watching and simply let his eyes begin to glow as his own form of darkvision took effect. In seconds the property was lit in shades of grey, entirely visible in monochromatic. Levash tried to shut the backdoor but after finding no success as it refused to click back into place, he simply moved a spare set of dirty boots that had been abandoned at its entrance to block the door from fully swinging open. Looking around the kitchen he found himself in, nothing seemed overtly out of place or disturbed. He considered investigating, learning if anything that could be used offensively against them had been made here would be an advantage, but knowing Alice wasn't here spurred Levash on to get out of here urgently. Passing into the hallway, he noticed the lack of care in the home, wall paper torn and peeling at the corners, mud from multiple different shoes trampled into the carpet, no signs of a family abode, rather a place of gathering. Turning a corner he saw the corridor lead to the front door and it was like a different house, the carpet was clean, far too clean with the smell of Lemon and Acid hanging in the air, the wallpaper looked like it had been reapplied recently, bubbles of air still pushing through at the corners. It was clear the front of the house had been cleaned up for Alice's visit.

Checking two closets as he went, the first held boxes of what seemed like junk, old baubles and bits of decoration for Christmas sorted haphazardly within. The second closet was more concerning however. Within he found all manner of tools to use against the supernatural, two crossbows, a sheathed blade and what looked like a cheap sword hung from the door rattling against it as he opened it. Sorted neatly on shelves within he found all kinds of poisons for different species labelled as such, bullets in numerous different calibres, stakes, silver nets and the list went on. It was clear they weren't as proficient as they believed themselves to be; mixed in with items that would be effective, he found many that were simple superstitions. Bottled holy water that had labels for vampires and demons, communion wafers, crosses, salt. The items almost made him laugh at their stupidity until he saw a golden gleam from one of the end jars. Getting a closer look, his breath caught in his throat. The golden diamond attached itself to a thin chain with a hook at the end, similar to what a diffuser for tea would come on, yet the purpose of it was far more nefarious. As golden ichor leaked from the tip of the diamond staining the jar it was trapped within, Levash realised what had happened. They had used Celestial blood to knock Alice out, she would stay knocked out for a few hours at best, but her body would be paralysed for longer than that, unable to defend herself.

Levash felt anger staring at the ichor filling the jar, but the implication was clear, the Celestial was undisputedly working with the SDF to get at Alice, so wherever she had been taken, the Celestial would no doubt be. The thought, shocking him into action Levash turned taking one of the crossbows from the wall and strapping it around his back, the 6 bolts attached to its body would have to be enough. The longer blade was too cheap to be useful but the smaller blade surprisingly was the opposite, pulling it from the sheath the black metal was sharpened to a point, the blade looked like it was of a military's design, regardless the metal would do nothing to harm the Celestial, the only thing that would puncture its flesh was his own Leitan dagger, a metal forged in Lestia before its fall for that very purpose. Regardless, Levash slid the sheaf of the blade into his waistband, it would find use against the humans that surrounded the Celestial.

Doing one last check, levash found nothing else of any worth and shutting the door, quickly proceeded through the house. The living room was bare with spare furniture, but looking at the table he knew this was where Alice had been poisoned, the tea cups sat stagnant on the table, the faint golden shimmer to the liquid would go amiss to anyone not looking for it. Pushing on he found nothing else of use and decided to move upstairs. The landing was small with only four doors to check, one was a bathroom that had seen better days and one a closet with bundled up linens and towels shoved into the corner of it. The third door he opened led into a large bedroom, like the rest of the house it was sparse lacking anything beyond furniture. It was clearly Lloyds room though, the corner had a bag of used take out cartons and bottles spilling out onto the floor. A pile of clothes lay at the foot of the bed, a shirt on top of the pile splattered with blood, thankfully old and dry enough that it couldn't have been Alices.

The only thing of note he found in the room was a box behind the door he spotted as he was leaving, it seemed out of place in the empty room. Lifting it onto the bed Levash proceeded to pour the entire contents on the quilt before letting the box fall behind him. Inside was more junk, old ornaments and bits of decorations that would make the house feel more homely. At the bottom of the pile he found a few loose framed photos, family photos. Looking through them it was clear it was Alice's familys photos, all different life events recorded that lead to this moment. He'd never really considered Alice's previous life, the human one she had led before transitioning into her demonic one, but he was determined to learn more about it once he had her home. Opening a thick book that was at the top of the box, it seemed to be some sort of scrap book of the families, recorded all life events from her parents meeting to the revelation. Flicking through he found the scrawlings in the book, manic writing in Infernal and dated around the Leeds expedition's arrival. Perhaps the influence of demonic energy being present in this world again triggered it, or Lilith herself.

Taking the rest of the book at a quicker speed looking for anything that would help, the only thing of real note was pictures of a large property they cleared in the woods. Alice's grandparents home, something that had now been left to her father. When he failed to find any more information about the property he decided it was time to move on.

Decided to check the last room, opening the door revealed a room so in contrast to the rest of the house. Looking around it was like the room was a preserved snapshot in time, the walls littered with band and movie posters, a clothes rack pressed against the wall and old jeans and shirts lined its rail. The bed was unmade, but the faint dust on it made it clear, no one had slept in it recently. Whatever had driven Alice's dad to remove all traces of his family's existence from the home, he hadn't been able to do so here. There was so much life in the still room, so much of Alice's personality, of her formative years, it felt even to Levash's loose morals like an invasion of her privacy, he could only hope it's one she would forgive because he needed to look for more clues.

He found photo albums in here as well, ones of Alice in her teen years when she used a different name and face, the pictures of friends he had never met, well all but one. Christina, who had proven very defensive of Alice, was in nearly every picture of them growing up. Levash didn't even realise how distracted he was until he heard movement downstairs. Mumbled whispers echoed in his ears, his advanced hearing now kicking in as he heard two masculine voices whispering directions as they scanned the property for intruders. Exiting Alice's room, Levash left the door open on purpose and entered the bathroom next to it, shutting the door but listening as a pair of footsteps made their way up the stairs.

As the steps reached the landing they halted, and Levash heard a mechanical beep as the man whispered, "I have something up here, one of the doors is open." As he stopped speaking another beep filled the silence as the footsteps downstairs grew hurried, and the set up here proceeded forward. Whoever was downstairs was coming but had not made it to the staircase as the person upstairs passed the bathroom door. Seizing the moment Levash pulled the door open silently and within a second he had his hand wrapped around the man's mouth silencing any sound, and the black blade pressed to his throat. He felt the man in his arms gulp as he pulled him quickly back into the bathroom. The man did not resist, his hands held at his sides, and the stake in his hand held in a white knuckled grasp. Kicking the door closed, he heard footsteps coming up the stairs and as the man in his arms twitched, giving away his impending struggle Levash dragged the blade across flesh from ear to ear, the man unable to make a sound beyond gurgles.

Quickly Levash lent the body of the rim of the bathtub, the carmine liquid spilling down the edge and then down the drain as the man's erratic movements grew still. The second person however must have heard something, as they came to the top of the landing they stilled. A mechanical beep sounded once more and as the man outside began to speak, Levash realised his mistake as the walkie talkie in the dead bodies pocket sounded off.

"Hey, mate, are you okay in there?" The masculine voice called out from the landing. Realising it would need to be a head on confrontation, Levash made his move. As thep swung the door open once again a bolt thunked into the wall beside him.

"Fuck!" The would-be hunter exclaimed as Levash heard the thunder of boots against steps as he made to run. Not giving him a chance to get far, Levash sped from the room and down the stairs seeing the back of the man as he hit the landing. As Levash landed in the hallway turning around to head down the hall the hunter surprised him, turning his stake slipping past Levashs defences and embedding itself in his shoulder. As Levash pulled back with a hiss, the hunter's stunned face turned to righteous anger as his hand snapped back out to grab the wooden stake but instead was caught by a clawed grasp. Levash pulled the hunter towards him, tripping the man and leaving him to sprawl on the floor, in a moment Levash was on him and the black blade now slick with blood was pressed to the second hunters throat.

"I won't tell you shit Demon, so just fucking do it." The hunter spat as he scrunched his eyes closed waiting for the end.

Levash could only laugh, "You have no imagination, mortal. You will die tonight, but trust me when I say, dying quickly will only be a reward for good boys. Levash allowed his true form to burn once again, his skin turning crimson, the cracked horn and scars serving to make him the monster this human imagined when he thought of demons, something evident by the fear that twisted into the human's face as he saw Levash's transformation take effect. Levash let the fear linger and build on the mortal's face before continuing. "Now I don't have much time this evening for torture, as I'm sure you are aware so lets make this quick. Answer my questions now and I will kill you quickly, your soul going on to wherever you believe it'll go. Or, I'll knock you out, take you home, lock you away from prying eyes and torture you until you lose track of time and reality, and your entire existence becomes nothing but pain. Then when you're good and broken, I will drag you back to hell with me, corrupt you, let your soul be twisted until it resembles a demons and then I'll do you the favour of letting you go back to your buddies and seeing what a celestial will do to a turncoat, demonic traitor. Now, which do you choose?"

As Levash swiftly exited the house the corpses he had left behind were a distant memory, he had the address of where Alice had been taken and punching the details into his phone he saw it was only a twenty minute drive away, out in the sticks. Forgoing his human glamour and not caring for any ambushes, Levash made his way quickly back to the old car, throwing the newly stolen weapons into the front seat, restarting the engine and pushing it as fast as it could go down the country roads. Levash's thoughts were going a mile a minute, the last hunter had revealed that they planned to do an "exorcism" on Alice, to remove the demon that had "possessed" her, but first she needed to destroy something for the 'angel'. At least, hopefully it meant Alice's own father wasn't trying to kill her, but the thought did little to soothe the worries growing over what the Celestial actually had planned for her.

As his phone alerted him that he was arriving at his destination in the appropriately named "Devils Dyke", Levash once more cut the engine and after rearming himself headed north towards the property. His eyes watched the tree line incessantly, any human hunters would be spotted long before they caught sight of Levash, but Levash couldn't risk being spotted or sensed by the Celestial.

Pushing through the thick copse of woodland Levash caught the first stirrings of life, soon after he first sensed the souls in the area, finally clearing the last of the trees and laying eyes on the old house. It was a single floor cottage, rustic, wood and surprisingly well maintained in comparison to the family home he had just left. From the information he had gained from the hunter, there could be anywhere between ten and twenty SDF members here at any given time, the cottage itself mostly serving as a bunk house and HQ for them. His target though was on the other side of the property. If the information was correct, Alice was being kept in the wine cellar under the property, a large stone structure that had grown as the members continued to dig out new rooms and platforms creating an underground outpost.

Thankfully the sun had yet to rise and the dark purples and blacks of the night provided cover for Levash as he crept around the treeline circling the house. He caught sight of maybe four guards patrolling the grounds, all armed to the teeth but holding crossbows at the ready. One guard he spotted was watching the other way as he passed and a quick look revealed he had on a large headset covering his entire upper face with goggles that staggered out to a point, small green glass at the tip. Nightvision. While Levash made it past safe, he made sure to be more mindful of the technology the hunters carried, not wanting to risk detection.

As the rear of the property came into view, Levash was dismayed to see the lone female guards standing stiffly next to it, yet again with her weapon primed and ready. From his position no other guard would be able to see him should he leave his cover, but there would be no way to sneak up on her. The only positive was that the hatch door raised slightly out of the ground next to her, giving him hope of finding Alice soon.

After considering all options open to him he could only think of one that would give him a chance to get in without alerting any of the guards present, with a slight sigh Levash slid the crossbow from his back shouldering it and taking aim at the unsuspecting guard. Steadying his aim, he knew he had one chance. He had never been an archer, and bows had failed him the past, but he had no room for mistakes. Taking a deep breath in he aimed slowly, and released and squeezed the trigger, the bolt shot from the crossbow in silence and in the blink of an eye it found its target hitting the guards throat and tearing straight through. Slinging it back over his shoulder, Levash wasted no time sprinting to the wall of the property before any other guards could spot him. He arrived at the hatch in time to hear the last dying gasps of the guard on the floor, her eyes already growing dull, unable to realise what stood before her as she passed.

The hatch had a padlock on it, but nothing that would cause any issues, squeezing the lock as before he managed to snap the mechanism off with only a small metallic crunch. Opening both doors revealed a well worn stone stairway, the damp smell revealing how long it had gone without use before the SDF had moved in. Grabbing the now still body of the guard, Levash hauled her into the stairwell before closing the doors behind him leaving her propped against the wall as he descended lower. Once he reached the bottom he found what must be the remnants of the wine cellar, both walls were lined with wine racks, with not a single bottle in sight. The room was large and looking around he saw three doors leading out of the room. One was an old wooden door of a similar design to the front door, the other two however seemed more like slabs of wood put up simply to block the holes behind them, clearly the new expansions to the property. Approaching the first door Levash saw on the left he was thankful to find no more locks and as he stepped through he found a long thin corridor of packed dirt, wooden beams, and sparse lanterns hanging between them. As he continued on his path he heard the first of many screams echo in the distance.
