It was summer, hot sun, blue skies, and swimming weather. Even better, it was holiday time and my family had booked us a stay at a lakeside resort. I was pumped, and my excitement grew when we actually arrived. The resort was glistening with promise, the lake was beautiful, and I was ready to let loose and de-stress.
My family and I were gawping and talking excitedly as we made our way through the lobby and up to our rooms. My parents had a room together and I was sharing with my little brother, but I didn't mind. After setting up our room I came out of the resort fresh and wide-eyed, with a swimsuit under light summer clothes and a broad sunhat. Not a cloud in the sky. I said goodbye to my family and set off to explore the area with a big smile on my face.
Outside the resort were some quaint shops and a little dock, around which there was a group of people with canoes. I made a mental note to give that a try later. Most of the area here was natural, so it didn't take long to leave people behind and be surrounded by the forest. I looked around slowly, enjoying the greenery, the wildlife, the deep blue lake just beside me.
I was working up a sweat from the warmth of the day. Pausing, I undid the buttons of my blouse and took it off, then shimmied out of my shorts. I put them both in my bag and continued on in just my bikini. I pulled at the bra to get some air onto my skin, then let it snap back onto my breasts. Thinking it was about time I had a swim, I looked about for somewhere to put my bag.
I walked back and forth along the shore, looking around disapprovingly. Not finding somewhere right, I walked a bit further out from the resort. I pushed through some bushes and found my path suddenly blocked by a stony outcrop. I made a noise of complaint and scowled at it in annoyance. I pondered it for a moment, then decided to climb it in rebellion.
It was pretty easy, and before long I was clambering onto its peak... not that it was much taller than me. Still half splattered on top of it, I looked out across the lake, then over the other side of the rock into some kind of grove. I ducked down immediately as I saw someone sitting on the shoreline close by, not wanting to be seen looking like some kind of weirdo. Cautiously, I peeked at them.
It was a beautiful girl, maybe a couple years older than me. She had wavy blonde hair tumbling down past her waist, big bright eyes and full lips. She had pretty hair clips that looked like coral, and an incandescent wrap hugging her large breasts. My eyes went down along her body, and I was confused for a moment. There was something weird going on with her lower half, which was mostly submerged in the lake. And then she splashed her legs in the water and I realised that I was looking at a mermaid tail.
I made an undignified sound and almost lost my balance on the rock. She looked over sharply and I hid again.
"Is somebody there?" she called out.
A moment of silence passed. I couldn't help myself, I had to reply. "Maybe," I said awkwardly.
She was quiet, then giggled. "Well if you've seen me, you might as well come down and say hi."
I popped my head up and laughed nervously. She grinned at me and beckoned me over with her hand. Conceding, I climbed over the rock and made my way down.
I stood a couple metres away from her on the sandy shore. She was sitting at the edge of the grove, her tail swishing softly in the water of the lake. She really was so pretty. Exactly how I might have pictured a mermaid. I gaped at her in wonder, before shaking myself out of it and managing to say, "Hi."
"Hello," she replied cheerfully. "It's nice to see someone else, I'm usually all alone." She pouted. "There's like this rule that I'm not allowed to show myself to humans. So unfair!"
I laughed. "Well, I guess people would make a fuss if mermaids were discovered, wouldn't they?"
"Hmph! What do I care for that? I just want to meet new people." She flopped down dramatically, one hand over her furrowed brow. "Sometimes it's just so boring I could die. Fishes make for the worst conversation partners."
I laughed again, then after thinking, walked over to her cautiously. I sat down on the sand by her, still keeping a little distance. "What's your name?" I asked.
She opened her eyes and stretched luxuriously while smiling at me. "Kimiko!"
I smiled enthusiastically back at her, excited to be talking to a real-life mermaid. "I'm Yuki! My family and I are staying at the resort over there." I gestured to it. "So..." I paused, thinking. "You're a mermaid."
She laughed. "I am!" she agreed.
"Yeah, of course," I replied, feeling embarrassed. "But I mean..." I fumbled to express what I meant, then I just got excited and leaned towards her. "What's that like!"
"Hmm." She looked thoughtful and amused. "I suppose it's got its benefits. I can swim faster than anybody. And I live longer than you humans." She turned onto her belly, propping up on her elbows so that her back was arched and her cleavage was on full display. I couldn't help but ogle them for a moment. They looked so soft, and I could see the indent of her nipples. She turned to look at me and I feigned innocence as I blushed a little.
"You're pretty cute," she said, smiling. "Why did you come over here?"
"Oh!" I said, flattered. "Haha, I was just looking for somewhere to swim, actually."
"Well this is the perfect place!" She became excited. "We could swim together!"
Swimming with a mermaid seemed surreal. "Oh my god we could. Are you sure? I wouldn't slow you down?"
"Not at all, we can take our time." Her enthusiasm was infectious. "Let's go!" She started wriggling herself down into the water, and was soon able to push herself out so she could swim freely. She waved at me. "Come on!"
I grinned and kicked off my shoes, then dropped my bag and ran out into the water. I waded and then paddled out and was joined by Kimiko, who swam lazy circles around me.
She splashed me, making me squeal, then swam off out of my reach while laughing. I swam after her, intent on revenge. We played and swam around together for a while, enjoying the cool water that sparkled under the sun.
We eventually swam back to shore, still giggling.
