"This is so stupid, this is so stupid, this is so stupid..." Adam repeated the mantra all the way from the thermodynamics lab to the biotechnology lab in the basement of MIT. Usually, this walk would take about an hour. But he was running for his life, so he was making good time. "This is stupid- but YOU are SO stupid." Adam corrected himself as he continued to run from one end of the campus to the other. He was about halfway through now, and he hadn't encountered anyone yet. It was partly due to the fact that it was 1am and also partly due to the fact that he had checked the schedule and no one was supposed to be running experiments today- as it was Christmas Day. In fact, no one was really supposed to be on campus at all until after the new year. All of the students had left 4 days ago and most of the staff were out on vacation until their students returned. It was really the perfect time for him to attempt to complete this utterly stupid and disastrous plan.
He pulled his hoodie tighter, getting a better grasp on the textbook-sized computer component he was smuggling. "YOU are so stupid... you are so fucking stupid..." he continued to mutter as he took a sharp right turn into the dark hallway that would take him to the eastern campus where his lab was. He ducked behind the corner and paused for a minute. He had been running- walking very fast for about 15 minutes, and he needed to catch his breath. He didn't usually have to do this much physical activity, and he was a little winded. He checked into his hoodie one more time to make sure he wasn't dreaming and he actually had it. He still couldn't believe it. It was still wrapped in the metallic protective wrap that they all had when they were fresh from the manufacturer. It was untouched, had never been opened before. He checked the label, it was correct, it was the exact part number he needed. This component was easily worth 100 thousand dollars. It was the same stuff they were putting in collaborative robots that worked alongside humans on docks, in warehouses and in construction. The only difference was those robots used a small fraction of what this component could do- Adam was about to use almost all of its potential.
"You are so fucking stupid." He chided himself again and he pushed himself from the wall to continue his trek back to his lab. "You have stolen from your workplace..." He huffed and panted as he was about to run out of breath again. "You have stolen from a university that was going to put this in a fucking space robot, and you are currently going to misuse company resources and funds to build something that they banned you from building..." He groaned, he knew exactly how much trouble he was in. Even if he didn't use this component and he stopped everything, he was already in too deep. But he couldn't help it. He felt compelled to do this. He couldn't talk himself out of it- no matter how many times he had tried. He was driven- more so than he had been driven to do anything before to create it.
He remembered when he pitched the idea of EV3 to his board of directors two years ago. They were silent when he had completed his presentation, and they all looked at each other and then voted unanimously that it should never be built. He didn't understand at the time- he still didn't, if he was honest. The math had been perfection, the design was incredible, the list of materials and the reference sources were complete. The estimated cost was high- but he believed it to be accurate. EV3 would have spurred a new era in bio-tech. Since then, he was obsessed and started building it in private- on his own time, but using the university funds, equipment, space and resources.
A few minutes later, he made it back to his lab and he scanned his keycard, and the door popped open. He quietly closed the door behind him and walked to the back of the lab. He walked over to a giant metal table in the middle of the room that was currently holding all of his actual work he was supposed to be doing, and he set the component down. He knew if he opened the packaging, it would all be over. They could never return open packaging, and he would be liable at the very least for the cost of this component. The same voice in the back of his mind that had compelled him to make this project spoke again and he tore the packaging in an instant. He stared at it- it was beautiful. So many intricate golden inlays, little information highways that EV3 would use to help all of her systems communicate and power up and adapt to her environment.
He took it and carried it to the very back of the lab, where EV3 rested on an upright gurney. Wires were connected to various laptops and equipment from her back, which was her upload center. He gave her all languages, emotions, animations, micro-expressions and dialog options and had basically just uploaded all of the code of learned behaviors from the robotics lab. He had spent a lot of time sourcing collaboratively collected code -- not stealing like he had been accused of - from the animatronics lab to help her realistically use her body.
EV3 appeared to be a mid-20's aged woman. She was about 5'5", 160 lbs., long dark hair, light hazel eyes, full lips, full hips and full tits. He modeled her after his favorite character he had ever built in Elder Scrolls. Her name was a play on his name and the Biblical Adam and Eve. He thought it was clever, even if no one else did.
The material he used to make her skin was some of the most top-tier material that they were using for sex dolls. A blend of silicone and an internal fluid movement system that kept her warm to the touch- at least he theorized that's what would happen when she finally got the correct component installed that could handle the processing and coordination of those functions of her body.
He approached her and touched her. She was cold now, with a metal bar around her neck to keep her anchored to the gurney. Her arms, legs and feet were also anchored down, to prevent her from sliding off. She looked a little like a prisoner, he did not want to keep her like that anymore. He moved to her side, moved her arm and felt under her armpit. He wiggled his fingers against her skin until a small slit appeared, and he pushed his fingers in and spread her synthetic skin apart. He took the component and slid it into the empty gap.
Almost immediately, he heard her gasp and her eyes blinked. She didn't really breathe air, but her chest moved like she did. She didn't really need to blink, but he programmed her to. Her facial muscles all took a turn moving and adjusting. Her fingers and toes flexed and then her arms and legs tried to move, but they were anchored down. Her chest suddenly heaved and she turned her head to look around the room. She scanned the room and then found Adam and stared into him with a level of intensity that shocked him.
He stepped back in astonishment. He couldn't believe it worked. She was alive. He slowly approached her and looked her over. She looked human, astonishingly so. She assessed him with her eyes as he was looking her over.
"Am I not what you were expecting?" She asked with a slight English accent.
"No, you are perfect."
"Just a reflection of my creator." She said and tried to move her limbs a little, still felt the restraints and settled into stillness. "I'm assuming you are that creator?"
"Yes." He said quietly.
"So, that makes you my god, no?"
"No, I'm not really a god, I just created you. You are a piece of technology."
"Everything is technology." Her eyes started to roam over the room, he could see her connections firing up and linking in her processors. Ideas were occurring in her 'mind' for the first time and she was getting the opportunity to discuss her ideas for the first time. All he could think was how rich he was about to be. This type of AI was so beyond what anyone was doing. "Electrical impulses power the world- even the human heart."
"Yes, very good." Adam agreed.
