I crawled from the smoking wreckage, my head throbbing. "Fuck, Leah." I'd absolutely totalled my car, and in the middle of the woods, no less.
The trees crowded around me, clogging the air with their dense presence. I checked the cell reception.
No luck.
Leaning against a sturdy trunk, I rubbed my eyes. "You've really done it this time, you useless, piece of..." I slapped my cheek.
Focus up, Leah.
There was no sense in bashing myself. If I wanted to make it out alive, I'd need my wits intact. I opened the trunk of my car, the only part still in one piece, and grabbed my emergency kit. I tossed it open, only to find a six-pack of beers with a note stapled to them.
For emergencies only, Leah!
it read, my past blasΓ© attitude biting me in the ass.
"Well that's just the cherry on the cake made of dogshit."
No wonder you got fired. You need to shape up.
The caw of a crow snapped me out of my own thoughts, and I realised a fog had settled over the ground, obscuring every inch, save a path.
Was that there before?
I wasn't sure, but I pressed onwards regardless. My head was killing me, but the only painkillers I had were of the alcoholic kind, so I bit my tongue and stowed my complaints. I followed the path through the fog, straight, between the shedding trees whose branches curled outwards, beckoning me into their depths.
Eventually, the trees cleared, revealing the darkened sky again. I emerged from between the branches, the valley below slowly coming into view. The fog clung to the cliffs, obscuring the base of the valley in shadow, but one thing was clear: something was down there. Towers and parapets struck out at random from the fog, hundreds of meters from each other, reaching like spears trying to bleed the sky. The town sat in silence beneath the fog, a single light not to be found.
I found myself approaching it, the relief at finding some form of life out on a road trip in the middle of Slovenia clearing my worried mind.
I crawled down the cliffs, hands steady, the entire journey only taking a few minutes. As I reached the bottom, I looked up, my wrecked car still visible. But it hadn't been in sight before...
had it?
I was tired. Things would make more sense in the morning. I walked up to the great walls surrounding the town to find the portcullis open, letting the fog roll into the village.
I walked through gate after gate, down road after road, with no sign of life granting me comfort from the seeping cold, until I finally reached the steps of the town's heart. My journey had been long and winding, and my feet were aching, though the moon overhead was still visible. The castle dominated the landscape so utterly, creeping upwards into the sky where the fog eclipsed it into darkness.
I pinched my cheek, hoping the adrenaline would help me conquer my stupor. The doors to the keep were massive, stretching a hundred feet into the air, though when I reached up, the knocker was within reach.
I slammed it into the door, and as the sound rang out the door creaked open. Firelight beckoned from inside, so in I went. The cold had seeped into my bones without me noticing, and I took a breath, rubbing my hands together.
The massive hall stretched upwards forever, reaching its peak with an enormous unlit chandelier. The hearth cried out from one side of the room, flanked by wooden doors of a much more reasonable size, though they were still larger than most.
A woolen rug engulfed my feet, and I gazed up the vast stairwell that ran up to a balcony. As my eyes adjusted to the light inside, I realized there was someone there, on the balcony, watching me.
"Excuse me!" I called out. "I'm sorry for inviting myself in, but my car broke down. Can I stay here overnight and get a ride into town tomorrow? I'll pay you back." My words echoed back at me, my voice wavering.
The figure stepped down the stairs carefully, heels clicking beneath their feet until they reached the edge of the fire's embrace.
"Welcome, my dear," the woman said. Her dripping voice made my knees weak, but I caught myself on an armchair I hadn't noticed until then.
As she made the rest of the way down the stairs, I realized how tall she was. Easily six feet, she towered over me. I only came up to her tits. And what tits they were... I couldn't help but ogle at her curves, the shape of her thighs pulled tight beneath her black dress.
"Uhh... hi," I said, the words a struggle to get past my sluggish tongue.
"Welcome to my domain."
"Yeah, sorry, again. Do you mind if I stay here?"
"No, but you won't be leaving in the morning."
"What? But I've got..."
She smiled, and something felt off about it. Her eyes made me want to run, but her body... wow.
I watched as she stepped closer, placing a hand on my cheek.
"Do you have any last words?"
"What do you mean?"
"Isn't it obvious?"
"Are you a serial killer or something?"
"What? No." She backed off. "Are you not afraid of me?"
"Why would I be afraid?"
"I'm a vampire." She bared her teeth, showing off the pointed fangs.
"That's what it was. I knew your smile was weird. I just figured you don't get out much."
"Jesus Christ." She took a breath and straightened her dress, hunger creeping back into the edge of her gaze. "Now that that's sorted, do you have any last words?"
"You're gonna drink my blood?"
Her intimidation fell again. "Yes."
"Do you burn in the sun?"
"Yes."
"Garlic?"
"Burns."
"Crosses?"
"Religious propaganda."
"Hmm."
"Hmm? What do you mean 'hmm?'"
"I just don't know what to make of it."
