The story starts out in Smalltown, USA in 2010 where Gerald Newcome grew up in a very well-to-do home and neighborhood. He attended private schools and got a good education. He was not very athletic so most of his attention was on his studies. He was also very shy and felt uncomfortable around girls so dating throughout high school never happened. There were some pretty girls in his class but he never bothered with them because he felt none of them would be attracted to him.
His father was a surgeon and made a very good salary. Gerry and his mother never lacked for anything as his dad was an excellent provider. But one thing Gerry wanted that his parents couldn't give him was a girlfriend. Gerry longed to have a steady female friend but his shyness caused him to be afraid of rejection and therefore he could never get up the courage to ask anyone out.
Gerry's high school graduation ceremony went fine and he was looking forward to going off to medical school to study to become a doctor. He had some male friends with which he had a graduation party but there was that void in his young life that could be filled only by a girlfriend. He was glad he was finally getting out of high school to get on with his life at college where he hoped to find Miss Right.

Gerry had chosen to study at a well known medical college in Virginia but just before he was about to drive there in his graduation gift from his parents, a new Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck, tragedy struck his family. His father was on his way to a convention in the Midwest when he was t-boned by a drunk driver and died. Gerry felt he needed to postpone his college career for at least one year because his mother was devastated and he didn't think he should leave her alone at that time. The school understood and had no problem with the delay.
Dr. Newcome was a very popular physician in the area and the funeral was filled with people who came to pay their last respects to a man who had some sort of connection with them. Gerry and his mother knew just about all of them and the receiving line was so long the funeral director had to cut it short so the services could begin.
Even though it was very sad for Gerry and his mom, Gerry couldn't help but notice a gorgeous blonde who was alone in the visiting line. He recognized her from school but couldn't remember her name. When the line was stopped the people were instructed to please take a seat so the service could begin. Gerry and his mother were seated in the first row. Gerry didn't think too much more about the blonde girl until she walked right up to them and gave her condolences.
"Hi, Gerald," she said in a lovely voice, "I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I wish there was something I could do to help the pain. I am praying for you and your mother. Is this your mother?"
"Oh, I apologize. Yes, this is my mother, June. Mom, this is, what is your name again? I am just not with it right now and I can't think of your name," he explained.
"How can anyone expect you to have a clear mind after what happened? My name is Kelly, Kelly Branch. I was in Science Class with you this past year," she said.
"Yes, I recognize you from school but I just couldn't recall your name. Sorry."
"Oh, that's okay, Gerry. I wouldn't even worry about it," she added. "But I better go find a seat. The service is about to start and this place is filling up. Your dad must have known a lot of people."
"Do you want to sit here with us?" he asked as he pointed to the empty seat next to him. "No one else will be using it."
"Can I do that since I'm not family?"
"Why not?" he said. "Of course you can." He arose like a gentleman should and had her sit down. It was exciting to him to have such a pretty, polite girl sit next to him in front of all those people.
The service was okay but it was very sullen. After it was over and most of the people had gone, Gerry and his mother stayed to speak with the pastor and the funeral director. There was still an internment at the cemetery so shortly afterwards the two of them got into a limousine for the ride to his dad's final resting place.
Thankfully the weather was nice and there was no threat of rain. It was obvious that most of those who were at the church service didn't come to the grave site. But he did notice that Kelly was there, alone, and he also noticed that in the sunlight she looked more beautiful than she did in the church. He couldn't help but notice the nice dress she was wearing that accentuated her very pretty legs with a hem that was a few inches above her knees.
After Dr. Newcome was buried Kelly came up to them and expressed her condolences again. The funeral director announced that all in attendance were invited back to the church for a luncheon. Gerry asked Kelly if she would like to come to the luncheon and she softly replied, "Only if I could sit next to you."
He was somewhat caught by surprise by what she said and was at a loss for words at first but then said to her, "Sure. I would like that." And they both got into their cars and drove to the church. Gerry of course had his mother with him and she asked him about Kelly, about how he knew her and if she is a girlfriend that he never mentioned. He told her she was from school but she's not a girlfriend, at least not yet. When they arrived Kelly did indeed sit with Gerry. He wasn't sure what to even say to her but she broke the ice and began talking to him. His mother was next to him but she was busy speaking to friends who came to honor her late husband.
As they were sitting at the table eating and engaging in small talk, Kelly slid a piece of paper to Gerry that had her cell phone number on it. She really seemed interested in him but he wasn't quite sure why. "Would you like me to call you sometime?" he asked. What a dumb question he realized he said right after he said! Why else would she give him the number?
She felt like saying exactly that to him but she didn't and instead she softly said with a smile, "Yes, please do." Kelly then said to him that she had to get back to work and got up to leave. She also gave her condolences again to his mother. Gerry told her thanks for coming and that he would be calling her before too long.
After she had left Gerry's mother again asked him who that pretty young lady was. He replied that she's a friend from school which led to a smile from his mom. In about an hour with the luncheon winding down he and his mom said thank you to the pastor and others who helped make the event go well and they left. His mom said she was very tired after such a long eventful and sad day, so they went straight home and settled in for the rest of the day. It was very lonely, especially for Mrs. Newcome, now that her husband was no longer there.
Gerry explained to her that school would have to wait until at least the second semester and she seemed fine with that. He felt it was not the time to leave his fragile mother alone.
The next day Gerry called Kelly and they chatted for about an hour until she finally asked him, "Gerry, would you like to meet me for lunch?"
"Sure," he said. "That would be great. Where would you like to go?"
"How about I meet you at Applebees? It's very relaxing in there and we can get a small table in a corner and just eat and talk," she said to him.
