September 2010. Monday 20th
DCI Holly Amy Boston stepped into her new office with a sense of pride and accomplishment. She looked around the decent sized room and gently placed her cardboard box of personal things on top of the vacant desk. She was early. A sign of her eagerness to please and make a positive impression on her new colleagues. She pulled the mid sized chair out from under the large desk and sat down tentatively. A little high for her. She fumbled under the chair for the lever to adjust the height and found the right level for her long legs. Whoever had sat in this chair before was certainly tall compared to her meager five foot six. She was relatively short for a Detective Constable Inspector for the Metropolitan Police but she had made her way up through the ranks with her quick intelligence and her astounding ability to correlate different pieces of information into a semblance of cohesive irrefutable fact. A talent which she had used to solve a very high profile case and brought her to the attention of the Metropolitan Police from her rural station.
Holly unpacked the cardboard box with her personal items. A photo of her younger brother. One of her parents who had passed away some years ago and one last photo of herself and her boyfriend. A selfie of them taken by her boyfriend on a beach in Spain. A large mug with a witty slogan. A parting gift from her colleagues at her old station. "The only coffee I want in this mug is Irish." Holly liked to drink but not so much as to justify such a slogan. However, there was that one night just after Halloween where Irish Whiskey had flowed copiously and her behaviour on that night had caused much gossip and mirth for days afterwards.
Other small items were put away in the bottom drawer of her desk and she was just closing it when the office door crashed open.
"Hello love! You must be the new DCI! I'm DCI Chapelle from the office next door." The introduction was loud and brash and startled Holly a little. She rose out of her seat to shake the proffered hand and smiled in return at the tall, dark but not quite handsome man who stood filling almost the entire doorway with his huge middle aged frame.
"Pleasure to meet you DCI Chapelle. I'm Holly Boston but I'm guessing you know that already!" Chapelle smiled in reply and nodded. His hazel eyes drifted over her from head to toe. She had been visually appraised by men before but this particular gaze was a little intense for Holly. Perhaps it was just her imagination but she had learned to trust her instincts on such things. Still, it was just a 'look' and when she reflected on such things it was understandable.
