The Yards--Part 2
I caught up with Morgan in front of school on our first day back. We just looked at each other for a moment, neither of us knowing what to say broke into a fit of laughter. We were both laughing hard and threw our arms around each other as the tears flowed down our cheeks.
"I missed you so much," she squeezed me crying into my shoulder.
"Same you stupid goat," I said laughing, "let's not do that again, ok." She gave me one last squeeze, and we headed into the building wiping the tears away and talking about what classes we had, which ones we looked forward to, and which ones were going to bore us to death.
"Did you get notified in time about the slave class requirement for us to graduate?"
"I did, and my dad is pissed. He is trying to get me out of it on a religious exemption."
"Really do you think it will work?"
"I don't know but I hope they decide fast so I can pick the a different class if I need to and not get stuck with something terrible.'' As we walked and talked in the hallway it felt like everything with the fair had been forgotten, until we turned and saw Miss Pierce. She made eye contact with me, and I knew she was headed our way. "Shit her she comes," I mumbled under my breath looking down and away from her.
"Who?" Morgan asked turning to where I had been looking, "Oh fuck lets go!" She grabbed my hand pulling me into the courtyard. It was full of students walking back and forth between the two wings of campus. We quickly ducked and dodged our way through our classmates ignoring her as she called out our names. We slipped into the west hall breathing a sigh of relief. "I am so glad I do not have her for any classes this semester."
"Me too, but we won't be able to avoid her for the whole year." We looked at each other for a moment each thinking about our plight.
"Briiirrrrnngggg"
"Oh, shit time to go. I will catch you at lunch." I started to move away toward my AP English class.
"Sounds good." she called back and disappeared into the crowd of students.
English was a bit of a bore, period two was not much better with astronomy, and my favorite class of the day so far was current events. Mr. Matthews, the current events teacher, was new to the school. He was young, just out of college for only a year or two, and OMG he was cute! I stared at him as he spoke. I was lost in his eyes as he spoke to the class, and the only thing that brought me out of my daydream state was when he said the words "34th amendment". My ears perked up as he explained that we would be spending a few weeks discussing the 34th amendment. He went on to say we would be discussing the new laws and economic changes in the north and Midwest that have had positive impacts causing the slave culture to see growth in those states where it had been stagnate. Looking around the room I tried to judge what the other students were thinking, but it was difficult to tell, and I just hoped my own excitement about the topic was not easy to read.
When the bell rang for lunch Morgan was waiting by the door for me to arrive. "Hey, how are your classes going?"
I was a bit out of breath and excited from my last class, but I was not going to tell her that. "Looks to be a boring year," I lied as we moved to get into the lunch line.
"Fucking sucks," she grumbled, "can I get some mashed potatoes please." holding up her plate for the server in the cafeteria.
"Really why you didn't run into Miss Pierce did you?"
"Maybe worse, I have Political Science second period."
"OH shit"
"Oh shit yes, Pervy Mr. Talbert"
"OMG what happened? Did he say anything? What did you do? What did you say? Oh, fuck does he know I was there too? Oh, shit we are so dead! How are we going to do this?" I started to hyperventilate trying to keep from crying and making a scene in the lunchroom.
"SHHHHH and calm down will you" Morgan was gripping my arm, her nails digging into my flesh. I looked at my arm then up at her, "it's fine he just caught me as I was leaving his class and said he enjoyed seeing us at the fair, and asked if we were thinking about working there next year, and he had this stupid shit eating grin on his face."
"Really? I pulled my arm away as her grip loosened. Picking up my fork, "what did you say?"
"I told him he would have to pay a lot more than $100 to have a go at one of us".
"WHAT?" I nearly shouted, and several students looked our way.
"SHHHHH would you!" Blushing, I stabbed some lettuce and shoved a fork full of salad into my mouth. "He just looked at my tits and said we would be worth it."
"What else did he say", asking as I chewed on my bunny food.
"I did not give him a chance to say anything. I just spun around, and got out of the room as soon as possible."
Swallowing my bite, "Are you going to report him?"
"How can I do that? We tell on him then he tells on us, and we all get in trouble, and that is not the kind of trouble I want to deal with."
I looked into her face. Her cheeks were red, and she was fighting back tears. "I'm sorry he said that to you." We both picked at our food for a few moments neither of us eating or saying anything.
The crackling of the school pa system interrupted our self-pity party, and everyone's lunch as the room went silent waiting for the announcement.
"Morgan Combs, and Kaylee Miller please report to the office, Morgan Combs and Kaylee Miller to the school office" and then the PA cracked off and the cafeteria filled with voices again. I looked up from my tray to see Morgan's face was pale, and I assumed she must be filled with the same dread that I was feeling. We stood up and solemnly made our way to the office, no doubt that our late summer escapade had been revealed.
We were both silent as we approached the office, my legs felt the weight of the world pulling in any direction but the office, but still I walked.
"Talbert said something I just know it," Morgan whispered under her breath.
I just swallowed hard and kept moving to the door. I grasped the warm steel handle and pulled it open watching Morgan lead the way into the room as I followed. The school secretary looked up and just pointed to the counselor's office.
Miss Peirce was sitting at the school counselor's desk. When I saw her, I felt a moment of relief but it was quickly replaced with a greater sense of dread and immense guilt. "Miss Pierce I am so so sorry", I started to babble. "We never meant for any of".
"Come in and have a seat please," she motioned to the two empty chairs in front of the desk. "And if you don't mind shutting the door, Kaylee." Closing the door behind me I kept my eyes down as I slipped into the chair. Our breathing was the only sound in the room. Morgan and I stared at our shoes waiting for our teacher to say something, anything. "First, I want to tell you that I am not upset or angry with either of you". The quiet that seemed like a lifetime was finally broken.
I looked up at her tears in my eyes. I was about to say something, but Morgan beat me to it.
"Miss Pierce we never meant for anyone to get hurt, especially you. You are one of our favorite teachers. We are so, so sorry. I could hear Morgan's voice cracking, holding back tears herself as she spoke.
"It's ok really, I am just glad I was able to keep the two of you safe. The slavers affiliated with the fair and carnival are not a group of people you want to be indentured to believe me." She was silent for a moment as I raised my eyes to meet hers.
"Thank you," I whispered.
"Although I know I did the right thing, and had both of you spared a terrible fate. I am not happy with my consequences in the matter, and the two of you are going to make it up to me". I want to talk to both of you more about what went on, what you saw, and my expectations going forward. School however is not the time nor the place to do that." She slid papers across the desk to both of us. "This is my address. I want to see both of you there at 4:30 today."
I reached up and took my paper from the desk. The butterflies in my stomach started to calm down. I stood up and left the room, with Morgan following behind me. The bell rang again.
"Shit we are going to be late for class, I will come by your house and pick you up after school".
"Ok thanks, see you later." I moved quickly through the halls to my next class.
The rest of the day was a blur and I was a bundle of nerves. When I got home I changed into some more comfortable clothes, A pink tank top that just struggled to keep my breasts in, jean shorts, and some tennis shoes. I got a sweet tea from the fridge and went to the porch to wait for Morgan to arrive. My mom pulled up just as I sat down.
