The Trench

I was 8 when the construction on The Trench began.

It started out as a running joke, people making fun of a billionaires folly.

By the time I was 13, it was no longer a joke, it was the most talked about project on the planet. The massive underground bunker that could save mankind.

My brother had started working on it, graduating highschool and going to work for them right away.

For me, living in Salina, the Trench was not just a massive news drain, it was everyday life for me. You could see the cranes and construction equipment and mountains of fill dirt back behind the work area from my backyard.

The workers stayed in town, the kids went to school with me. I was used to them.

By the time I turned 18, it was done and news was coming down about who was going to go into the Trench.

The thing about the Trench was, it was too far for anyone to get to if something huge happened. It was meant to be long term and sealed in living and once it was locked, it wouldn't unlock for at least 100 years, probably longer. The inside was self-sustaining and could last as long as it was needed.

It could be that absolutely nothing happened in those 100 years, or it could be that the world ends and only those inside get to live. It was built to withstand anything, even solar flares so massive they decimate the rest of the earth, or meteors, floods, or about anything else.

That was the rub.

There was room for 900 people inside and the living conditions would be modern, but sparse. There wasn't a lot of room.

Tens of thousands of people wanted in and there were lotteries being held. Small ones for specialized jobs and the people who were qualified, larger ones for jobs that didn't need specialists.

Rich people were buying their way into the upper level, the 'expensive' level that was larger and had more amenities.

The trained professionals were promised the two levels just below the amenities level, and everyone else in the lottery got to go into the more crowded lower levels.

My brother was one of the first to put his name in for the lower levels and he suggested I try as well.

I had no interest in living and dying underground, though, never seeing the light of day again and being stuck with a group of people I would probably come to loathe.

As the time drew closer, he tried harder to get me to do it since my chances were so good. They were drawing an even number of men and women so that the population would stay even.

I still told him no.

I had plans for my life, and they didn't include turning into a mole.

They did, however, include marrying Phillip and getting a house built on his families acreage and living out my dream of having my own garden, chickens, goats and a she shed to store all my books and read in.

Phillip was all in as well, we'd been dating since 8th grade and he was excited as I was to get our life started.

He was a little more religious than I was, but I didn't mind that at all. Especially since he said his was a more personal belief and he didn't go to church with his folks. He just held his convictions in his heart.

I respected that and I was happy to wait until we were married.

I did think we could kiss more, and even make out some... but his focus was always on something else. He was very into farming and competing in 4-H and doing shows all over the place.

Our Senior year, he suddenly got into football as well. He started wanting to go to all the games and he started hanging out with a group of them. He even took me to parties.

It hadn't been our thing, not until that year and I tried to understand it... but I really didn't. I would find a room to hide in and sit and read while he played beer pong and got drunk with his friends.

He'd come find me when it was time to go and I would drive us home.

It was our graduation party that changed everything for me.

He took me to the huge party and I tried to smile and pretend to have fun, but I really just wanted to go back home and hang out with my family. Kyle was already packing, SURE he was going to be drawn in the lottery since he got to put in 7 times for all the extra things he was doing to be one of the ones chosen. If he was drawn, he would be gone by the weekend.

I didn't want to hang out in this rich person's house and watch teenagers be stupid and get drunk, I wanted to celebrate this accomplishment with my family!

Sulking, I found an empty room and curled up with a book, but I couldn't get my mind off of feeling like I was in the wrong place.

This time, I decided I could leave and come back for him when he was ready. I would go home and spend time with my family, then come back!

That settled, I went to find Phillip.

He was nowhere, though, and no one knew where he was. I asked about his friends, but no one knew where they were either.

Finally, someone said they saw Aaron and Braydon going upstairs to the master suite.

Those were his new best friends! They would know where he was!

Hurrying upstairs, I went in and hurried past the little living area to the almost closed door into the area with the bed.

When I opened the door, I wasn't sure what I was watching for a moment.

Aaron and Brayden were on their knees on the bed and Phillip was between them on his hands and knees. Another football player was nearby with a phone, filming them and I finally realized what I was seeing.

Brayden was fucking Phillip in the ass while Aaron was fucking his mouth and Kris was filming it all while Corey stood back and watched.

What the hell?

"Phillip?" I asked, horrified.

Jerking and rolling, panting, he sat up, covering himself with a blanket. "Wen?!?! What are you doing here, Wen? What the fuck?" he demanded, looking around for his clothes while Aaron glared at me and Brayden looked uncertain.

Kris laughed and pointed the phone at me. "Little bitch boy just got busted by his little bitch!" he laughed.

"Stop her!" Phillip yelled as I backed out of the room.

Corey took him literally, tackling me down to the ground and pinning me there.

"Fuck!" Kris laughed. "Did you see that shit? I think she's jealous! Pissed that her boys gettin' fucked and she aint! He told us how you've been on him to fuck you, Elowen! How he cain't get it up for you! How he gets it up for Brayden though!" he laughed, still filming.

"Knock it off, Kris! Let her up, Corey!" Phillip yelled.

"This bitch goes and runs her mouth, I will fucking kill her," Corey threatened "I ain't no fucking queer!"

"She knows, she won't say anything! Let her up!" Phillip cried, moving my hair off my face as I cried.

"I say we let Corey fuck her! Prove he don't' get off on watching boys fucking," Kris laughed again, obviously high on something.

"I say we do exactly that!" Brayden called out. "Phillip, get your ass back over here, NOW! Get back on the bed! Corey, toss her up here too, right there where he can see her! Don't you dare say no, Phillip! You've been using her for years, covering up who you were. It's someone else's turn to use her now and you aren't going to say shit! You're fucking mine now and you don't need that little cunt, do you? You swore to me you were coming out. WE were coming out. Let him fuck her."

"Not like this, though, he..."

"You either get up here on this bed and we finish what we were doing while he fucks her, or I'm dumping you right now. I'll let Aaron finish me."

"I wanna fuck her too!" Kris called quickly, following me with the camera as Corey dragged me to the bed.

"Phillip, please!" I begged him, terrified as Corey unfastened my pants and Kris grabbed my leg to keep me from kicking. "Don't let them do this!"

"Gag her with something! Feed her your dick, Kris!" Brayden yelled, shoving Phillip down to his hands and knees again. "I don't want to hear her! Eyes fucking front, Phillip! I am all there is for you, that little bitch doesn't exist to you anymore!"

A hand jerked my head the other way, then slapped me.

When I screamed for help, a larger hand punched me in the temple and my vision swam for a moment before I blacked out.

In the morning when I came to, I was in my own bed and every single inch of me ached.

Getting up, I looked at the hastily scribbled note on the back of a receipt laying next to me on the pillow.

'You talk, you watch him die, you watch everyone you love die, then you die.'

Grimacing, I touched my face, then eased up and went to the bathroom.

I knew I'd been raped, I felt how sore I was in both places. They'd violated me in both holes and I was sure my mouth too, the way my throat hurt.

Getting into the shower, I broke down sobbing, then stayed in there and cried it out.

It was Kyle who finally came into my room to check on me.

"Hey, brat! Can't sleep all day! You really tied one on last night! Phil had to carry you in to bed! Said you finally decided to join him and... what the FUCK happened to your face, Wen?" he demanded angrily when he finally saw me.

"Nothing," I told him quickly, looking down. "I don't remember. I know I fell off a table or something?"

"Wen... are you sure? It doesn't sound like you at all! You hate drinking! Are you..."

"I'm ok, Kyle," I told him quickly. "Did you need something?"

"No? Not really... I was just coming to tell you the countdown for entries is almost up. Cutoff is noon, you sure you don't want to enter?"

I thought about it a moment, about how much I hurt and how much everything out here sucked now. Maybe a new life is exactly what I needed.

"How do I enter?" I asked numbly, part of me shutting down a little and letting the chaos take over.

"Seriously? Wen... what happened last night?"

"I got drunk and hated it," I lied sadly. "Phil and I broke up and I got drunk and angry and I just... I want to leave now. I'll do it. I'll enter with you, how do I put my name in?"

"Oh... it's easy. Grab your laptop and go to the website... here, I'll pull it up," he told me worriedly, sitting with me on the bed.

In less than 10 minutes, my name was in the drawing. I was in the lottery to go into the Trench.

I felt numb and dazed, like it wasn't real.

It probably wouldn't be, the ticker showed 718 women in the lottery and there were less than 300 spots left for women with no skills to be trained inside at a job that needed no skills.

Of course I wouldn't be drawn.

Kyle sat with me for a while and excitedly told me everything about the Trench, then convinced me to put in for one of the Library positions if I made it.

I jollied him along and told him I would and even let him lead me out front so he could show me things on his phone on the couch.

Just before dinner, Phil showed up.

He looked pale and terrified when Kyle opened the door and he looked at me across the living room in the tiny trailer.

"Wen, can we talk?" he asked, starting to step in.

"No," I told him quickly. "Not today. Maybe... maybe next week. Leave me alone until Monday," I told him quickly, waving Kyle to shut the door.

Phillip was forced back to the porch when Kyle shut the door.

"Ok, babe," he called through the door sadly. "I'll see you Monday, ok? Can you at least answer your texts?"

I didn't answer as Kyle sat back down with me, looking over my face.

"You realize if you get drawn... you won't be here Monday, right?"

"I know. That's why I said Monday. If I'm still here, I'll tell him to piss off. If I'm not, I never have to see him again, right?"

"Yeah... I guess. You good, Wen?"

"Kyle? Could... when... all those times you messed with Phil... called him a fag and stuff... did you know?"

"Know? Know what? I didn't mean anything by it, Wen, he's just, you know... really effeminate and always staring at my package. It was a shitty thing to say and I'm sorry, if you guys fought because of that, I'll call him and..."

"No! No, it's not that, it's... he is, Kyle. He is gay. I caught him with a guy... cheating on me."

"Oh... oh shit, Wen, I'm sorry. That sucks! You want me to kick his ass?"

"No. I just wish he hadn't used me and he had told me a long time ago. I just... kind of want to forget I ever met him. Start over."

"Yeah... I get that. I'm sorry Elowen, really. But hey? How cool is it going to be to be one of the Trenchers?!? It's going to be us down there and our kids growing up together as best friends and cousins! I'll find a wife right off and you can find a husband and we'll start having kids at the same time so they can be besties their whole lives!"

I smiled because I knew that was a thing for Kyle. He'd always wanted a big family like his best friend had had growing up. We only had each other and our mom, though, that was it and even we were only half siblings. His dad had died in prison when our mom was still pregnant with him and my dad had died in a car accident right after I was born. She hadn't known him that well, he was a one night stand. When she finally found him and reached out to him when she was 8 months along, he was there for her. Showed up for the rest of the doctors appointments and drove her to the hospital when she had me.

All I had left of him was the book he'd bought to read in the gift shop. The receipt was the bookmark and he'd left it in her car when he'd dropped us off at home and his fiance picked him up in his car. He was supposed to come back and see me after his job interview two days later, but he never made it back. He'd gone out to celebrate and even though he'd called a taxi to get home, he was hit by a drunk driver. A man who'd been drinking at the same bar as him. Killed my dad and the woman driving the taxi both.

So all I had was a book that he'd almost finished and my mom said he liked enough that he was going to get the next book in the series, and the receipt for it that was on page 642. He'd almost finished the book.

I'd finished the book and all the books in the series several times. It was a happy place for me, that series of books.

"Wen?" Kyle asked, nudging me.

"Sounds great," I told him quickly. "Hey... I feel like a shower before the drawing starts? You popping popcorn?"

"Would if we had any! Hey, how about some pizza rolls?"

"Perfect," I smiled tightly, then got up to go get another shower.

I wanted the feeling of those men off me. Their hands... anything else they touched me with. Mostly I was afraid. Afraid about what I couldn't remember and so glad I couldn't remember it. I didn't want to know, but I also needed to know and I didn't understand it.

I would need to go get tested.

Get a morning after pill.

Tomorrow.

Tonight I would sit with my brother and watch the drawing, along with a good chunk of the rest of the world. At least the United States. Air fare was expensive and you had to be able to get yourself to the Trench. It was part of the application for the lottery. You had to be able to get yourself there and there would be stand-by's waiting to take the place of anyone who didn't show up.

When I got out of the shower and went out front, mom was home, she'd taken off early from work.

"Elowen Fern Montgomery! What happened to your face?" she cried, jumping up and taking my face in her hands.

"I'm ok, mama," I told her quickly, pulling away. "I just... I got drunk at a party last night and fell off a table. It was stupid."

"Wen?!? Since when do you drink, Wen?"

"Her and Phil broke up," Kyle offered. "She caught him cheating with a dude. Turns out he really is gay."

"Elowen! Are you alright?"

"Fine, mama," I promised. "Let's just watch the special? The drawing and the tour?"

"Are you sure, baby? Do you want to talk about it?"

"Not even a little, I just want to forget it!"

"Should I call Rhonda and..."

"No, mama, I'm sure his parents know. Just leave it, ok? Let's watch this."

"Since when are you so interested in the Trench, Wen?" she asked worriedly.

"Wen submitted her name to the lottery today," Kyle grinned.

"And you LET her?!? After such a bad breakup? You know she's just feeling..."

"Mama! It's fine! I'm not going to get in. I made the choice, not him. It's fine. There are like 8000 names in the lottery and almost 600 spots. There's no way I'll get in."

"Only 700 of them are girls, though! And almost 300 of those spots are for girls! It's mostly guys who want in and hardly any girls, they have to pull in evenly to make the population balanced!"

"That's an almost 50% chance!" My mom wailed, turning me to look me over. "I can't lose you both to this thing!"

Hugging her close, I sighed, then finally spoke. "Even if I win, I don't have to go. They draw like 50 backups!"

"And I thought you'd be glad to be rid of us," Kyle teased.

"When have I ever made any mention or even insinuation that I wanted either of you to leave?!? No, I want you both to stay here as long as you want until you find the right partners and settle down. There's never been a hurry for either of you to leave! I took off the second I graduated and tried to make it alone and I regretted it for so long, I knew I never wanted that for either of you! Stay and save your money and get established! Neither of you ever have to leave!"

"No one says we're leaving, mama," Kyle laughed. "The chances of being picked are slim, especially for me, but you have to know I'm excited for this? This is what I want for my life, I am SO stoked for it! This is a big deal, and it's important! That could be the future of the world going in there! WE could be the future of the world going in there! Don't you want that?"

"I don't want to be 5 blocks from my babies but never able to see them again!"

"There will be phones inside, and cameras! We can stay in touch!"

"But only once a week on monitored calls in a public space!"

Kyle laughed again and hugged mom and I leaned on her shoulder while he started the special.

It started with a tour and as soon as the lottery started, numbers popping up in the corner of the screen, he pulled out a paper with his 7 numbers on it.

"You have your number, Wen?" he asked me after a dozen numbers had been shown.

"Oh... I didn't write it down. I'll get an email, right? A text on my phone? Where is my phone?" I wondered out loud, then went to my room to look for it.

It wasn't there.

It wasn't anywhere.

"Kyle? Call my phone?" I yelled down the short hall.

"Straight to voicemail! Get if off your laptop, come on, they're about to do the living quarters tour!"

I grabbed my cheap old laptop and went back to the front, wondering about my phone. "I must have left it at the party," I mused out loud. "Do you think you could text Phil and ask if anyone has it?"

"Yeah. Shit! That one was so close, just 2 off from mine! This is so exciting! What's your number, Wen? I've been writing them down."

"It said I would be notified with an email," I mumbled as I tried to boot up my laptop. "Did you text him?"

"I am! Chill. Sent. Man, LOOK at those, isn't that cool?"

"They're tiny," I noted, looking over the apartments.

"Yeah, we don't get much space but the rec areas are bigger! And the apartments are still cool! I like the patios we share with our neighbors!"

"Those aren't patios, those are little rooms with wallpaper that looks like outside and a sun lamp," I told him, amused.

"But they look neat!"

"And you have to share. What if you want dinner on the patio and your neighbor gets there before you? That would suck. What if your neighbor starts storing his shit on your patio, taking up all the room and making it crowded?"

"What shit? We don't get any shit. Just what we need and that's it. Look at that! Look at that swimming pool! And the kids pool! Those sun lamps are MASSIVE! That's so neat, isn't it?"

"Sure, I guess... is that Phil?" I asked as his phone went off.

"Yeah... he says Aaron has your phone, he found it at the party. He'll get it from him and get it back to you. Do you want him to drop it off or bring it Monday?"
