The rural community of St Mansville has one Church of the Holiest God, one grocery store, one cafe, one hardware store and three schools. One of those is a K-12 "public" school, although the entire school board consists of church elders who run the entire curriculum. The other two consist of the Women's College and the Men's College. These two campuses are located on opposite sides of the only highway leading both in and out of town. Because the community is small, many of the faculty teach classes on both sites, but the students are strictly segregated by gender. In fact upon enrolling at either college, students sign a strict lifestyle covenant. They are forbidden from leaving campus unless accompanied by school faculty, or their own parents for holidays. They are forbidden from most contact with members of the opposite sex except for school faculty, immediate family during visitation days, and for four hours each Saturday during which time "courtship" is permitted. Students who wish to take place in courtship are allowed to mingle with students of the opposite sex in a highly supervised cafeteria.
Covenant also forbids students from reading any books not approved by the school library, watching any television except for a selection of pre-approved VHS tapes and live religious services, provides a strict dress code, bans gambling, drugs, alcohol, dancing, music and masturbation. The school has no computers or internet, cell phones are forbidden and there is a strict 9pm curfew and 10pm lights out.
Required classes for all students at St. Mansville Women's College include Human Sexuality and Purity for Women, Domestic Duties for Wives and Mothers, Health and Wellness: Maintaining the Temple of Your Body, and Science and History according to the Bible. Each of these classes is required to be taken every semester, advancing from 101 and 102 freshman year to 401 and 402 senior year. Starting in sophomore year students may pick a "major" to prepare them to be Sunday School teachers, midwives, farmers wives or church secretaries.
It should go without saying, but St Mansville college has absolutely no valid accreditation, credits are not even remotely transferable to any legitimate school, and none of their degrees are valid for anything outside of the Church of the Holiest God, which is widely accepted to be a cult.
In short, St. Mansville College is the dream school for conservative religious parents looking to keep their young adult children sheltered and pure after high school. And for this reason many young adults are sent here from all over the country.
Margaret was one of those young adults. Her family had homeschooled all seven of their children. She was the youngest. Her childhood had been happy, but sheltered. She had never dated or even had friends who were boys. When she had gotten her first period her parents sat her down for "the talk," explaining only the very basics of how her husband would get her pregnant some day, and told her she was not to touch, look at or even think about boys until she was married.
Although her family lived hundreds of miles away, her oldest brother had graduated from St. Mansville and came home well prepared to be a leader in their church. Her other two brothers had skipped college to join their father's gravel business, and her sisters had all married men from their church shortly after turning 18. But the church was shrinking, and they hadn't been able to find a suitable husband for her, so shortly after she turned 18 her parents agreed to let her attend St. Mansville, with the hopes that she would be courted and marry a righteous man after graduation.
Students arrived on campus Sunday morning, with classes beginning the following day. They were instructed to wear a modest outfit and bring nothing from home. The freshman women's dormitory is a two story building with small tinted windows. On the first floor is a common room that functions as kitchen and living area. On the second floor all the women sleep in one large room with bunk beds lined up along both walls- twenty bunks in all, for a total of 40 beds. At either end of the bedroom is a bathroom with several toilets, sinks and showers all open to each other. One of the school tenants is that privacy breeds vanity and lust, so privacy is essentially non-existent.
In the main room the freshmen women were greeted by Mistress Florence, their dorm mother. She lined them up alphabetically by last name, and handed each of them a small cardboard box with a removable lid and their name stamped on the side.
"Welcome, freshmen class. In here you will find all the personal possessions you should need for the semester. Greed is a sin, so for all other things you will need to share."
Margaret opened her box and found two simple, folded floor-length gray dresses, with high collars and long sleeves. There was a pair of ballet-flat shoes, three pairs of white socks and one knee-length, three-quarter length sleeve gray cotton nightgown. There was also a toothbrush, hairbrush and simple gray headband, a pencil and a spiral bound book entitled "A Holy Education for Women."
"In this book you will find all of your required reading and assignments for your general education classes this semester. Now, please remove your clothing."
"Right here?" A young, pale blond girl who looked to be just barely 18 asked. She was standing directly to Margaret's left.
"Yes, miss Chelsea. You will rid yourselves of your clothing here and now. We will laundry your outside clothes and return them to you when it is time to return home for holiday."
The timid young women began to comply. Mistress Florence secured each woman's things in a bag labeled with their name, and then piled them all in a large gray rubber tote. Margaret removed her jeans and turtleneck sweatshirt, but then hesitated when she realized the box did not contain any underwear.
"Were we supposed to bring underwear from home?" She asked.
"No, miss Margaret. Please remove the rest of your clothing and put them in the bag."
Seeing her confused look, mistress Florence retrieved Margaret's workbook from her box and opened to the second page. She said, "allow me to quote from the St. Mansville Women's College Covenant, section 3. 'Proper attire will be worn at all times. During the day this consists of a full length, long sleeve, plain gray smock and simple flat shoes. When sequestered among dorm mates at night, a knee length nightgown with shorter sleeves may be appropriate.' Our school's founders said nothing of underclothes, and our current president believes that the covenant should be taken to its most literal interpretation. We find that it is easier to maintain discipline this way."
