Jennifer is a classic nerdy girl who prefers to do her own thing. She's 25, lives alone with a nice stay at home job and outside of talking with friends online she just stays home and enjoys her nerdy things like video games, anime, etc.
As of late she has been having troubles with a proper sleep schedule. She will lay down for sleep at a specific time every night at 10pm, but she will toss and turn with no falling asleep until 12am or 1pm on the dot.
While nerdy Jennifer does her best to live a healthy life, she's slim, 42A breast size and a nice tone fit with the rest of her body. If she didn't dress in a tshirt and baggy shorts and actually dressed up, she could easily sell as "one of the popular girls".
So in her mind she shouldn't have these issues falling asleep, but each night leads the same. It doesn't bother her as much on weekends since she only works on weekdays, so if she can't sleep she can sit on her phone or pass the time with a nice game or 2 until she feels exhaustion and needs sleep.
This is where our story begins as Jennifer finally makes the call to go see her doctor and see what she can do to sleep easier as no traditional sleep aids are working for her. She goes through a traditional checkup with her doctor and the doctor asks questions to ensure he is understanding correctly.
"So you are unable to sleep until at the latest 1am no matter the substance you take or how early you go to bed?" He asks and Jennifer nods. "It's honestly rough doc, I have to be up at 6am every day to ensure I can be ready for work. I know it's a stay at home job but I still feel exhausted throughout the day. If it keeps going I know my quality will get worse and I don't want to lose my job over not getting enough sleep. You gotta have something for me that'll knock me out."
The doctor writes down notes as she's talking and begins thinking. After a couple minutes he spoke up. "well it looks like you were prescribed before some heavy sleep aids, and by your description those don't seem to work. You've also been taking canabbis so that should also help but it seems no matter what's thrown at you you can't fall asleep quick." Jennifer frowned wondering if this meant she was a lost cause but didn't want to give up "there's gotta be something doc. I'll do anything, pay for anything I swear please I just need something to be able to sleep"
Once again the doctor sat thinking and he slowly wondered if it was time to run an experiment on some test medicine he and some other scientists had been working on. He finally spoke up again. "Okay. We do have one thing we've been testing. We'll need to do some more experiments but we think we're at a point that we can have human testing. It's hard to get human test subjects willing to help with this since it's so new. If you are willing, we can use you as our guinnea pig in a sense and see if it's ready to hit the market."
Jennifer sat there conflicted. "Are there side effects? What can I expect? Will--"
The doctor cut her off confirming that he doesn't have the answers to those questions yet but would give them when possible. "Jennifer you need to understand that if you do this, there's a lot you're going to figure out to see how it goes with human consumption. We know some stuff but not as much as we'd know with your testing. Because it's so new, you're also going to have to sign a waiver that in case something happens, you cannot sue us and other legal discussions we'd go over then. Give it a day or 2 and see if you're interested, and I'll check up on you on Thursday to see if you have a decision." Jennifer slowly nodded and thanked him for his time and went home.
For some reason it seemed the sleep got worse. Her boss, Lauren, called her on Thursday morning asking what's going on and Jennifer was honest in saying she wasn't getting any sleep. Originally she was getting at least 6 hours sleep but the last couple nights it's 4 or lower. Lauren sympathized and said maybe she was giving Jennifer too much work and said she'd spread it around to the team and told her to take the rest of the day & friday off to catch up on sleep.
Jennifer pleaded to let her keep working but Lauren stopped her saying it was perfectly fine and that Jennifer should get some sleep and that she wasn't in trouble for this so long as she clears up her act.
The call ended and Jennifer was nervous but knew Lauren was right. If she doesn't fix this she could get in trouble or worse, fired. She spent the rest of the day trying to sleep but only was able to sleep off and on and finally when she was getting to fully falling asleep, she was woken up by her phone going off. When she looked at the caller ID she saw it was Doctor Baxter calling her like he said he would.
She picked up with a groggy hello. "Good afternoon Jennifer. It's Dr. Baxter. I'm just calling to check in on you and see if you've had time to think about my proposal for the test medicine we discussed on Tuesday."
Jennifer knew she really didn't get time to think it over but if the Dr was correct in the sense of this being the only way to help her, she didn't really have much of a choice. "Doc I need to be honest I can't live like this. Somehow my sleep has gotten worse somehow and if I don't fix it up soon I'm going to be fired. I need to fix this immediately. I don't care what potential side effects there are, I'll take the experimental drug please"
Dr Baxter was happy to hear and told her to come down to the office when she has time to take care of the legal paperwork and get it in her hands asap.
The call ended and Jennifer forced herself out of bed to shower and get dressed and was somewhat excited to potentially get this sleep issue fixed. Jennifer was worried about driving so she called a cab to get to and from the Dr's office. Once she got to to her destination, she went in telling the receptionist she has an appointment with Dr Baxter and about 5 minutes later she was called into his office.
"Thanks for coming in so quickly Jennifer" He started, shaking her hand and they both sat. "So I'm going to get right into it. Like I told you originally this pill is extremely experimental. We have some data as to what it will entail but you're going to be our first human test subject. We have very specific instructions we need you to follow so things can go well. Is everything making sense so far?" He paused and Jennifer nodded saying she didn't have any questions so far and he continued. "Good, alright so the main thing this will help is with your sleep. Once you take the medicine you'll almost immediately get groggy and want to go to sleep. Because of that be sure to take it as you're laying in bed and ready to sleep. Once you fall asleep you should have a full night of sleep, a full 8 hours. As you wake up you should feel rested and energized and ready for the day. Don't worry you can be waken up during the night so it's not like you'll be knocked out completely, but it will give you the opportunity you need to sleep. Of course I wouldn't let you leave here without knowing the side effects as well. Are you ready for those?" Jennifer nods once more and Dr Baxter nodded once more grabbing some papers. "Alright well like I said, you may notice more that we aren't aware about, but what we've noticed from testing is muscle soreness, random aches, and for women like you may notice some changes to your body such as breast expansion. Some of these will go away after constant use of the medicine. If there's anything you notice, of course super serious come back to the hospital immediately, but anything you notice that I haven't covered, please write down in your notes and we can discuss them in a couple weeks. If you have no questions, I'll have you sign here, here and here."
