Chapter 26 -- Where is Jennifer?

I was standing there looking around. I couldn't see Jennifer or her mother. I again asked Julie, "Where is Jennifer?"

She looked around. "Jim, I don't know. I thought she was behind us."

Lisa and Susanne were still celebrating their engagement. I dashed back into the Slave Induction Center to see if she was there. I asked the clerk. They gestured to the room, "Only staff or slaves are allowed anywhere else but here."

I ran back out and looked in the parking lot. Jennifer's mother's car was no longer there.

I pulled out my phone, and by reflex, I pulled up the Slave App, but then realized that Patty was the only one left there. I then tried to call Jennifer's phone. I heard ringing. Not the ringing coming out of the speaker of my phone, but the ringing coming from somewhere nearby. It was the ringtone she set when I called her. I looked around, trying to find it. There was a trash can just outside the entrance of the Slave Induction Center. I looked in and found her phone.

At this point, everyone else noticed me rushing around. Lisa came over as I was staring at Jennifer's phone. She asked, "What's wrong?"

I showed her Jennifer's phone, and with tears falling down my cheeks, I said, "She's gone."

=======

A few hours later, I sat on the couch at home. Annick and Patty were there to comfort me and keep an eye on me. I was despondent, not understanding what had just happened.

Everyone else was running around town to see if they could find her.

David from work arrived with Lisa and Susanne. They sat opposite me. I looked up at them.

David said, "I have a friend who works in the private jet section of the airport. I showed her a picture of Jennifer and her mother. She says that she saw them get into a private plane."

I asked, "Does she know where they went?"

He said, "Not yet, but we are trying to find out." He paused.

From all the years I had worked with him, I could tell from his face that there was something else, and it was bad.

He took a deep breath. "My friend also said that Jennifer looked really happy. As a matter of fact, she described her as being giddy as she jumped on the plane. I am so sorry."

He moved over to sit beside me and gave me a hug. I started to cry.

Later, we found out that they had flown to Hong Kong. They had family there, and the mother's company's Asian headquarters was there.

I was emotionally wrung out. Lisa said, "Jim, it is late. Let's get you to bed." There is nothing that you can do. The flight is still hours from landing."

I started to respond, "But..."

Lisa said, "But nothing. In the morning, after they have landed, we can try her mother's phone. We still have that number."

I was reluctantly taken to my room. Patty helped me change and tucked me into bed. She asked if I wanted her to stay with me. She clarified that she would sleep on the loveseat. I told her, "No." I needed to be alone.

It took a long time to fall asleep. I could still smell Jennifer on her pillow.

I was awoken by my phone buzzing on my bedside table. I jumped up to check. There was a text from an unknown number. I read it. I yelled, "What the fuck!"

Patty must have heard me and came running into the room. She asked, "What is it?"

I handed her my phone. She looked at it, went to the door, and yelled, "Lisa!"

I heard Lisa and Susanne running down the hall, followed by Julie.

Lisa asked, "Are you OK?"

I pointed to the phone. Lisa grabbed it from Patty, and she, Susanne, and Julie read the single message: "Jim, Thank you for my freedom, but I need to find my way now. Please don't contact me. Jennifer."

Susanne sat beside me on the bed and put an arm around me. She said, "I don't get it. She was in love with you. I know it."

Susanne pulled out her phone and tried the number the text came from. She said, "I'm blocked."

We tried all our phones. We were blocked both for this new number and Jennifer's mother's number.

We moved to the kitchen. We sat on the stools around the island while Patty worked to get us something to eat.

We were sitting there in silence. I said, "Lisa, Susanne, I am sorry."

Lisa looked and said, "Why?"

I said, "This should be a happy occasion with you two getting engaged. I'm sorry I have ruined it."

Lisa stood up and came over to hug me. "Little brother, you have nothing to be sorry for. This is all on Jennifer."

I sat in silence, and then Julie said. "Wait, her work. They must know something. They handle your company's finances. They can't block you."

Susanne said, "At least we would know if something was planned or if she took off on them as well."

It would be hours before Jennifer's office opened. We sat mostly in silence while we ate. Patty broke the ice by asking Lisa and Susanne if they had started to think about the wedding.

That provided a welcome distraction as we started to talk about wedding plans.

When we finished breakfast, I went over to Patty, kissed her on the forehead, and hugged her.

She asked, "What was that for?"

I said, "For giving us a distraction, even if for a few minutes. The talk of the wedding reminded me that there is a future."

She smiled, "You know I could help you in the shower. I am your slave still."

I chuckled, "Thanks, but I think I'll shower by myself. I need to get my head in the right space. It may be a while before I take you up on that."

I did reach her boss. Evidently, Jennifer's mother met him and the firm's President on Tuesday. She also used them for her business, which was many times larger than Lisa's and mine combined. She had asked them to give Jennifer five weeks off, but to keep it a secret. She told him she would surprise Jennifer and me with a trip after Jennifer was freed. He was surprised that I wasn't with her.

Everyone we knew had tried Jennifer's number, but it seemed everyone was blocked. It was like she and her mother had completely cut everyone off. We did reach out to her mother's local office, but they said that they couldn't help us.

Another dead end.

I started to feel really lost.

=======

Over the next week, I worked and did not do much else. Various people tried to cheer me up, but I wasn't in the mood.

Then, exactly a week after she disappeared, Jackie came barging into the house. She huddled with Julie.

I said, "What?"

Lisa and Susanne had joined them. They looked upset. Lisa looked at Jackie and nodded.

Jackie came over and sat with me. She took a breath. "I sort of found her."

I asked, "Where?"

Jackie glanced nervously at Lisa. "I found some pictures on PeopleBook."

I neutrally said, "Show me." Jackie motioned for me to sit on the couch. Jackie showed me what she had shown them. It was clearly Jennifer. The pictures showed her in different locations, which we assumed was Hong Kong. She looked happy. In some photos, she was laughing. The worst part was that she was with two men, and in some of the pictures, they had their arms around her.

I collapsed.

=======

After seeing those photos, I mostly went through the basic actions of living: Sleep, Eat, Work, repeat.

Unfortunately, the following Friday was company bowling night. Since that bowling birthday party, my company has had a bowling night every two months, followed by drinks at a bar.

I wasn't planning on going until David showed up in my office that afternoon. He put a piece of paper on my desk. I picked it up and asked, "What's this?"

David said, "My resignation."

I sat there stunned, "Wh..What?"

He picked up the letter and put it in his pocket. He said, "If you don't get your ass to the party tonight and have a good time, I'm going to resign."

I stared at him for a minute, contemplating what he just said. Then I leaned back in my chair and chuckled. I said, "I know what you are trying to do."

He interrupted, "Jim, we are friends, we have known each other for years, since college. She is gone. There is nothing you can do about that. I need my friend back, so you need to get your ass out of that chair and have some fun tonight."

I realized that he meant it. He had me between a rock and a hard place. I said, "OK, I'll go, but I can't guarantee that I'll be any more than a stick in the mud."

Once word got out that I was going, they had to call the bowling alley to book a few extra lanes. More than the usual group wanted to come out to support me.

I did start to come out of my shell. I didn't bowl my "A" game, but I did start to have some fun. Once everyone else saw that I was starting to enjoy myself, they started to relax and have more fun.

After bowling, we went to a bar with a dance floor. A few of the women tried to get me on the dance floor. I kept saying no until David pulled his letter from his pocket and started to slide it across the table. I rolled my eyes at him, and he laughed when I finally agreed to get up onto the dance floor. Eventually, Janice even coaxed me into a slow dance. Janice was a beautiful blonde. I think she was selected for that mission, as I knew she was happily married with two small ones at home, so there was going to be nothing coming out of that dance.

At the end of the night, I started to thank David, but he cut me off and said, "That is what friends are for. There is nothing to thank me for." He flashed the letter again and added, "I'm just glad I am still employed next week."

I was laughing as I got into the cab to go home.

When I got home, Patty was nervously waiting for me in the kitchen. She looked at me quizzically.

I asked, "You knew about tonight?"

She nodded and tentatively asked, "Did you have fun?"

I answered by pulling her close for a kiss, then grabbing her hand and dragging her to my bedroom. I had a lot of pent-up energy to expend.

I woke up first and untangled myself from the still-sleeping Patty. I think I wore her out. Unusual for her not to be the first up.

I made my way to the kitchen to find Lisa, Julie, and Susanne grinning like cats with a canary.

I just said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," and they started to giggle.

Patty came into the kitchen a few minutes later. She kissed me on the cheek and said, "Fuck Jim, I'm going to have problems walking for a week."

That spawned another round of giggling.

Things went to a new normal. I was sort of more like my old self, but even Lisa commented that I wasn't totally there yet.

Patty was in my bed every night. During one of our fucking sessions, I saw a scared look on Patty's face. Some guys take their frustrations out at the gym with a punching bag. I realized, in that moment, I was taking my frustrations out with overly aggressive fucking of Patty.

I stopped. She asked, "What's wrong?"

I looked at her and said, "I'm sorry. I just realized that I have been working out my frustrations on you. It isn't right."

She said, "It's OK, I'm your slave."

I sighed. "I know that, but you see, I'm not even really enjoying it. I am just trying to use up as much energy as possible so I can sleep."

I motioned her over to the loveseat. We talked for a couple of hours. When we dated, she was a stuck-up bitch, but she was always a good listener. I did most of the talking until I think I was all talked out.

I pulled her in for a hug and said, "Thank you."

She hugged me back. We kissed, but gently this time. I then picked her up and threw her on the bed. I took my time and probably had the most satisfying orgasm that I had had in weeks. I slept like a baby after that and the following nights.

=======

It was several weeks later on a Tuesday night, almost five weeks since Jennifer had disappeared. It was late, and Jackie barged into the house. She had been spending a lot of time with Julie recently, as Julie was finishing up a project at work and then moving to New York in two weeks.

We were all in the process of getting ready for bed. Jackie yelled, "She's back!" as she entered the house.

I was already in the kitchen when she walked in. I heard everyone else running over.

I asked, "How do you know?"

By this time, Julie, Lisa, Susanne, and Patty had arrived.

Jackie said, "She and her mother were at the restaurant tonight. I was busy in the back, and one of the waitresses came over to me and said she thought she saw Jennifer in the restaurant. Unfortunately, I could not check because we were in the middle of our dinner rush. By the time I was free, I came out just in time to see them leave. Her mother spotted me and rushed them out the door."

I asked, "Them?"

Jackie sighed, "Yes, I didn't get a great look, but it looked like them and the two guys from the PeopleBook photos."

Lisa put her arm around me for support. I said, "Well, we can't call her, and she is probably locked up in that house of her mother's." I paused for a minute. "I wonder if her work knows anything. I will call them tomorrow."

In the morning, I called her office. They confirmed that she was scheduled to be in the office on Monday. Well, I would be in her office as well. I made an appointment to review the books on Monday morning as a reason to be there.

We did ask all of our friends and those who were mutual friends to let us know if they saw her. I would rather have it out with her sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, she was back underground, so I had to wait until Monday.

My meeting was at 9:00 am. Although they went through the latest statements thoroughly, I really didn't pay attention. Fortunately, David picked up that slack. As we left, I made the excuse that I needed to use the washroom. I knew where Jennifer sat, so I took the long route to ensure I walked by her desk.

She was sitting there talking to a colleague. She spotted me, frowned, and continued to talk to them. I know it had only been five weeks, but just seeing her again got my heart beating faster. I waited patiently until the colleague left. I stepped up. I tried to keep my voice neutral, "Jennifer."

She also looked all business and replied, "Jim."

I paused, rethinking my next step. I didn't need a scene, so I said, "I think we have some unfinished business. Can you meet me for lunch?"

She relaxed a bit. She didn't want a scene, either. "That would be fine. I do think we need to talk."

I then asked, "Usual spot, noon?"

She replied, "Sure." Then she turned back to her computer, ignoring me.

I stood there for a minute. Everything inside of me was screaming to pick her up, hug her, and kiss her, but eventually, common sense took over, and I walked away.

I was there 15 minutes early. I was a nervous wreck. All the scenarios were playing through my brain. She eventually showed up at 12:05, just as I was thinking that she had stood me up.

We sat staring at each other. We had sat and eaten in this exact same spot so many times over the years that neither of us even asked for a menu. The waitress came by, and we both ordered without even looking at her.

I guess I invited her, so I should start. "Can you explain your message?"

She said crossly. "What message? I think I am the one who deserves an explanation."

I stared at her. "I didn't send you a message. You blocked me after you asked me not to contact you."

She was starting to get really mad. "I had just gotten on the plane, and you sent me a message that you decided not to go on the trip, that you were moving on, and that we shouldn't see each other anymore."

I pulled out my phone and stared at her. "I sent no such message." I then opened my phone, brought up her message that she was ending things, and handed it to her. I saw her check the phone number. I continued, "After you sent that, you blocked me, Lisa, Susanne, Julie, Jackie, and everyone else we could think of."

She pulled out her phone and said, "No, after you sent me your message, all of you blocked me."

She showed me her phone. The message to me said, "Jim, where are you? You are supposed to be on the plane with us." The reply that she received was, "Jennifer, I loved the time we had together, but I can't go with you. I think we need to look to the future, but not with each other. Goodbye, Jim."

I handed her back her phone and said, "Sorry, I don't know who you were communicating with, but I didn't receive or send those messages."

She picked up her phone and flipped through a few photos. "OK, so explain this?" She showed me a picture of me dancing with a blonde woman. You could see my face, but you couldn't see hers.

I said, "That was the night of our company bowling party. You know, you went to the bar and danced afterward. You remember Janice, you know, married with two kids. They were trying to pick up my spirits after you abandoned me. I was devastated. How about you and your friends?" I pulled up the PeopleBook page with the photos of her and two guys. "How about you?"

She looked at the picture. "That's my cousin and his boyfriend. Where did you get this? I was so distraught after you abandoned me that she kept taking that picture over and over again until I finally put a smile on my face. Where did you get this?"

I showed her, "On your PeopleBok page."

She sat stunned. "I don't have a PeopleBook page."

We sat looking at each other. I thought, "Someone is playing us." I said, "Send me a text. Just send 'hi'. I am going to do the same."

We both hit send, and after waiting for a few minutes, nothing came through.

Both phones showed that the messages were blocked. I told her, "Look at my phone's blocked settings, and then look at yours. Are these numbers blocked?"

After a minute, she said, "No."

I said, "Look, I think we are being played. I know my phone is clean. I get Russ to check it every week or so. Do you mind having him look at yours?"

She thought for a minute and said, "No, let's go."

I saw the waitress and said, "Sorry, something has come up." I handed her a fifty, which was way more than what our meal was going to cost, and the two of us headed back to my office. I felt her hand slip into mine as we walked out the door. I don't know if it meant something or was out of habit, but it felt nice.

We got to the office. I spotted Russ at his desk, eating a sandwich. "Russ, Sorry to interrupt your lunch, but I have an urgent favor. Can you take a look at this phone?"

He looked up and spotted Jennifer. I noticed looks on other people, including Charlotte. I made a facial expression and a hand motion to tell people to just be cool. I noticed Charlotte getting out her phone to send a text.

I looked back at Russ. "We can't send texts to each other, but we aren't blocked. I suspect that someone has put some kind of monitoring/control software on the phone. Can you tell?"

He took the phone, plugged it into a laptop that was off the network, and accessed the phone after Jennifer entered her security code. I stood there impatiently as he worked away. I glanced at Jennifer, who looked a bit nervous as she was getting the odd hostile stare.

I decided to step up. I announced to everyone in the office, "Yes, Jennifer is back." I took hold of her hand and squeezed it. "I think that Jennifer and I have been played to keep us apart. Russ should be able to confirm that if we give him a few minutes." As I finished, I heard movement behind me. As I suspected, Charlotte had sent a text to Lisa. She and Susanne were standing behind me.

Jennifer turned and saw them. She had a tear in her eye as she was coming to the same conclusion as I was. She let go of my hand, rushed to Susanne, gave her a hug, and said, "Susanne, I think I have fucked up."
