Chapter 25 - What to do now?
It took me a long time to fall asleep after I heard Jennifer say, "I love you." My mind started to go in a million directions. I started to question everything in my life.
What am I doing with my life?
What happened to that plan where I would be married with kids by now?
What exactly are my feelings about Jennifer?
I thought I had everything figured out regarding Lisa, Patty, the girls, and work, but those three little words had me doubting everything.
I did finally fall asleep, but that was interrupted far too early with a knock on the door. Patty stuck her head in the door and said, "Wake up, sleepy heads, breakfast is ready."
I groaned and looked at Jennifer, who was stretching. I'm not sure that she even realized that she said what she said. She just reached over, gave me a hug and a kiss, and said, "Good morning."
We walked into the kitchen. Patty was there. She smiled and said, "Breakfast is in the dining room."
Jennifer and I wandered over to the dining room. Everyone else was already there.
Jackie spotted us. "Jim, you wanted my evaluation? She can fucking cook."
There was a full buffet-style breakfast on the table. There was a bowl of chopped fruit, a bowl of fancy-looking scrambled eggs, a plate of bacon, pancakes, etc.
On each plate, there was an omelet. I was taking in the spread as I sat down when Patty came in with a pot of coffee. She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I raided your fridge and pantry. I hope you like it."
I looked at her and said, "Wow, this looks amazing. When did you get up?"
She said, "I have been up for a couple of hours. I am still sore from last night, but George was an early riser, so I had gotten used to getting up early to make him his breakfast. As I learn more about what you like, I will make things more to your taste."
I took a bite of the omelet. It was amazing, and I told her so. The others nodded their heads and told her that they agreed with me.
Patty took a step towards the kitchen. I asked, "Where are you going?"
She said, "George always liked to have his breakfast alone to read the paper. I was heading to the kitchen to eat."
I said, "Well, that ends here. Go get your breakfast and join us. You had your punishment last night, so you are now equal with all of the girls. Sit beside Jackie. I'm sure she has some questions."
Everyone shuffled their chairs to make room for Patty. I saw them chatting. At one point, Jackie ran and got a pad of paper, and they started to jot things down. I thought, "At least the ice has been broken. Now, if I could get my head straight after last night."
At breakfast, Lisa decided that they needed to take Patty clothes shopping, but I would not be allowed to come. I rolled my eyes as the girls all smiled at me. Jackie also mentioned that she and Patty had been discussing meals and that Patty now had a grocery list. Jackie, of course, had to work at the restaurant tonight. It was a Saturday. She would be heading there just after lunch, so Patty would need groceries to make us dinner.
After breakfast, Patty started to clean up with the girls. I said I was going for a shower. Jennifer asked if she should join me, but I told her no. I saw Lisa give me a questioning look. I knew she would likely pick up on the conflict within me. There would be an eventual conversation. I just wanted to delay it as long as possible.
They all left before lunch. They decided to have a girl's lunch, and I was glad to have the place to myself. They would be dropping Jackie off at work after their lunch. I don't know if it was because Lisa picked up on my mood or not, but if it was, I was grateful.
I knew, however, that Lisa couldn't leave things alone. As I made a BLT with some of the bacon left over from breakfast, there was a knock on the door. Annick was there, and she looked worried.
I laughed as I let her in. I asked, "Lisa messaged you?"
She gave me her patented motherly smile. "Yes, she said something was off with you. Do you want to talk?"
I finished making my sandwich. I asked if she needed anything, but she said she had had a late breakfast and was OK.
We sat, and I told her about the "I love you" and how I was feeling conflicted.
Annick said, "Well, that shouldn't be a surprise; she has pretty much been head over heels for you since day one."
I stared blankly at her. She laughed, "Men, you need to be hit over the head sometimes to get you to notice things."
"Well, I thought back to where I was before the girls entered my life. I am almost 34. I had thought I would be married with kids by now, but I'm not even in a relationship right now.
Annick said, "Well, I think you could be in one."
We chatted a bit. She had some thoughts that I hadn't even considered. She called Franรงois, and he joined us. By mid-afternoon, I had sorted out a few options with them and was feeling much better.
I hugged them and told them I didn't know where I would be without them. I reminded them, not a word to Lisa.

Lisa and the girls came back before dinner. I spotted Lisa giving me a look-over, and I smiled back at her.
The girls unpacked the groceries, and then I saw them return to the car to help Patty carry her load into her room. I rolled my eyes as they were giggling like schoolgirls. I was glad to see that they all seemed to be getting along.
Lisa, at that point, cornered me. I thanked her for sending Annick over. I lied to her and said that bringing Patty in had unsettled me, but between the talk with Annick and the attitude the girls were now showing towards her, I was feeling better.
Lisa didn't pick up on my lie. She gave me a hug and reminded me that she was there for me.
