I had been invited to the sixth reunion party of my graduation class from college. I had also recently been told I had got my Master's in Education to add to the degree I already had. It would be a feather in my cap as well at the elementary school where I taught. The reunion was taking place in a hotel not far from our former college. We have had a reunion of most of the girls every year since we graduated. Each year about twenty five of the hundred and five who graduated would attend but each year there were some different faces at the party.
As the night wore on there was talk of going back to Danielle's place for a few drinks and maybe a card game or two. That could go on until three or four in the morning and I had to work the next day. Those card games had a habit of ending up being strip poker or another game where some of us ended up naked. They could be fun as long as you were not the only one naked but I didn't fancy going with them tonight because of work so I decided I would get a taxi home later.
Towards the end of the night I was talking to Ali who had not been for a few years. I told Ali I would have to book a taxi to leave soon and it was nice to catch up with her again. Ali asked me did I still live where I had when we were in school together. I confirmed I was staying with my family but was planning on moving out shortly. Ali offered me a lift home as she was staying with her boyfriend and he was due to collect her soon. They would be passing the end of the road where I lived on their way home. I accepted the offer.
A short while later I said goodbye to those remaining at the party and headed out with Ali. Outside we met Jack Ali's boyfriend who exchanged a quick kiss with her before Ali introduced me. Jack was fine with leaving me home so they went over to Jack's large black sedan. Ali sat in the front passenger seat while I sat behind her.
As they left Jack lit a cigarette. Ali started to give out as she hated the smell of cigarettes. After taking a few more puffs of the cigarette Jack chucked it out the window. Very soon after that a police car with its lights flashing could be seen behind the car Jack was driving. Jack pulled over after a short distance. After a short time a police officer got out of the patrol car and came to the driver's door beside Jack asking him to open the car window. The police officer asked Jack for his driver's licence and documents. The officer asked if he knew why he had pulled him over. Jack took his driver's licence out of his pocket and the documents out of the glove box. He did not know why he had been pulled over. The officer reminded Jack he had thrown something out of his window. At least three more police cars arrived on the scene. The officer asked Jack to step out of the car for a search. I started to record the event on my phone. Other officers including some female officers asked Ali and I to step out of the car and present ID.
I had never been in this situation before and was becoming very worried. The female officers asked Ali and I to empty any pockets and allow our purses to be searched. They also patted our bodies to check for weapons. I saw the officer looking very closely at a small plastic bag Ali had in her purse. Ali's behaviour was similar to a child who had been caught misbehaving. I noticed Jack becoming more agitated but not saying or doing anything. The next thing I knew I was being read my rights and hand cuffs were put on my wrists behind my back. I was ushered into a police car and belted into the rear seat that was sealed off from the rest of the car by what looked like clear Plexiglas. I was driven to a police station and the car parked in a closed area with other police cars.
I was brought into the police station. I was ushered into what I understood to be the booking area. I did not see Ali or Jack anywhere and wondered what happened to them. I was first asked for all my personal details. I gave the officer my name as Rachel Elizabeth McPherson, my date of birth January 23

nineteen ninety seven and my address etc. All were recorded and I had to sign that they were true and accurate.
I had to remove my jewellery and place it in a small plastic bag with a number on it. My phone and purse were also put in the bag. All items were recorded that went into the bag. I had to sign the log to confirm all the items in the bag were mine. An officer told me I had to be scanned for contraband.
"Stand with your legs apart and your arms stretched out so I can scan you" the male officer said.
The officer using a hand held scanner passed it all over my body up the inside of my legs, along my arms but going very slowly over any part of me that clothing covered. I then had my finger prints taken.
"Take off your shoes and hand them to me."
I complied and the officer put my shoes in the bag. The officer also wrote a description of the shoes in a log book she had with her.
"When you are finished we need to photograph you and finish the booking process."
I spotted a clock on the wall and it said three fifteen.
I was given a pair of plastic clog like shoes to wear.
"McPherson hands behind your back while I cuff you." an officer said.
I obeyed and I felt the metal cuffs grasping my wrists. I was brought to a cell. On the way I asked my escorting officer what was going to happen to me. The officer said I would spend the night in the cell and in the morning my lawyer would be contacted and I would be allowed my phone call. Sometime later in the day there would be a court appearance and hopefully I would get bail and be able to go home.
I was locked into the cell on my own my hand cuffs were removed through a hatch in the door. I sat there looking at four concrete walls on a bench that was also a bed with a thin mattress on it. There was a blanket sitting on the mattress. There was a metal toilet in one corner with a small wash basin on top of it. Gross I thought. I was extremely worried as I had no idea what was going to happen to me. However I knew I had done nothing wrong. And all being well would be able to get bailed out later. The other thing that worried me was what I could be charged with as it could affect my teaching career. I also needed to contact my school to let them know I would not be in work in the morning.
I was unable to sleep with worry along with the light shining in my cell window. It seemed like a very long night. Every so often somebody would walk by and shine a torch in the window checking me. The light in my cell came on and it seemed very bright to my sleepy eyes as I heard the door being banged on
"Get up" a loud male voice shouted."
I jumped from under my blanket. I must have fallen asleep eventually. It took me a moment to realise where I was but had no idea what the time was. I stretched and got up, hovered over the toilet. I used the thin toilet paper and then flushed. I washed my hands and face and sat back on the bed or should I call it a bench. It seemed like I had loads of time to worry about my future as I had very little idea what would happen beyond court later that day. The hatch in the cell door was opened and a bottle of water, an almost black banana along with a wrapped sandwich was placed in it. An officer said here's your breakfast. I ate the food and my stomach was not impressed.
When I finished I decided to do some exercises to pass the time. It was quite lonely in there as there was no other activity to be seen and only the distant noise of the offices somewhere else in the building. I decided to count the number of blocks that the walls were built with just to try to get my mind away from worrying the whole time. I began to wonder when I would get my phone call and contact my lawyer. I decided to try Jules Carson a lawyer who lived on my street. I knew him and had baby sat his children Andrea and Simon while in college. From what I had heard he had a good reputation and the fact that I knew him should help and I hoped it would not cost me too much as I had spent most of my savings on a car recently. I wondered what I was going to be charged with as I could not hear clearly from last night with all the noise on the street.
