Rachel's Jail Time Part1

Rachel goes to Jail for the First Time

This is a fictional story where all characters are fictional and all involved in sexual acts are over 18 years of age. The names, dialogue, incidents and plot are fictional. Any resemblance to actual people or events is purely coincidental.

I had been invited to the sixth reunion party of my graduation class from college. I had also recently been told I had got my Master's in Education to add to the degree I already had. It would be a feather in my cap as well at the elementary school where I taught. The reunion was taking place in a hotel not far from our former college. We have had a reunion of most of the girls every year since we graduated. Each year about twenty five of the hundred and five who graduated would attend but each year there were some different faces at the party.

As the night wore on there was talk of going back to Danielle's place for a few drinks and maybe a card game or two. That could go on until three or four in the morning and I had to work the next day. Those card games had a habit of ending up being strip poker or another game where some of us ended up naked. They could be fun as long as you were not the only one naked but I didn't fancy going with them tonight because of work so I decided I would get a taxi home later.

Towards the end of the night I was talking to Ali who had not been for a few years. I told Ali I would have to book a taxi to leave soon and it was nice to catch up with her again. Ali asked me did I still live where I had when we were in school together. I confirmed I was staying with my family but was planning on moving out shortly. Ali offered me a lift home as she was staying with her boyfriend and he was due to collect her soon. They would be passing the end of the road where I lived on their way home. I accepted the offer.

A short while later I said goodbye to those remaining at the party and headed out with Ali. Outside we met Jack Ali's boyfriend who exchanged a quick kiss with her before Ali introduced me. Jack was fine with leaving me home so they went over to Jack's large black sedan. Ali sat in the front passenger seat while I sat behind her.

As they left Jack lit a cigarette. Ali started to give out as she hated the smell of cigarettes. After taking a few more puffs of the cigarette Jack chucked it out the window. Very soon after that a police car with its lights flashing could be seen behind the car Jack was driving. Jack pulled over after a short distance. After a short time a police officer got out of the patrol car and came to the driver's door beside Jack asking him to open the car window. The police officer asked Jack for his driver's licence and documents. The officer asked if he knew why he had pulled him over. Jack took his driver's licence out of his pocket and the documents out of the glove box. He did not know why he had been pulled over. The officer reminded Jack he had thrown something out of his window. At least three more police cars arrived on the scene. The officer asked Jack to step out of the car for a search. I started to record the event on my phone. Other officers including some female officers asked Ali and I to step out of the car and present ID.

I had never been in this situation before and was becoming very worried. The female officers asked Ali and I to empty any pockets and allow our purses to be searched. They also patted our bodies to check for weapons. I saw the officer looking very closely at a small plastic bag Ali had in her purse. Ali's behaviour was similar to a child who had been caught misbehaving. I noticed Jack becoming more agitated but not saying or doing anything. The next thing I knew I was being read my rights and hand cuffs were put on my wrists behind my back. I was ushered into a police car and belted into the rear seat that was sealed off from the rest of the car by what looked like clear Plexiglas. I was driven to a police station and the car parked in a closed area with other police cars.

I was brought into the police station. I was ushered into what I understood to be the booking area. I did not see Ali or Jack anywhere and wondered what happened to them. I was first asked for all my personal details. I gave the officer my name as Rachel Elizabeth McPherson, my date of birth January 23

nineteen ninety seven and my address etc. All were recorded and I had to sign that they were true and accurate.

I had to remove my jewellery and place it in a small plastic bag with a number on it. My phone and purse were also put in the bag. All items were recorded that went into the bag. I had to sign the log to confirm all the items in the bag were mine. An officer told me I had to be scanned for contraband.

"Stand with your legs apart and your arms stretched out so I can scan you" the male officer said.

The officer using a hand held scanner passed it all over my body up the inside of my legs, along my arms but going very slowly over any part of me that clothing covered. I then had my finger prints taken.

"Take off your shoes and hand them to me."

I complied and the officer put my shoes in the bag. The officer also wrote a description of the shoes in a log book she had with her.

"When you are finished we need to photograph you and finish the booking process."

I spotted a clock on the wall and it said three fifteen.

I was given a pair of plastic clog like shoes to wear.

"McPherson hands behind your back while I cuff you." an officer said.

I obeyed and I felt the metal cuffs grasping my wrists. I was brought to a cell. On the way I asked my escorting officer what was going to happen to me. The officer said I would spend the night in the cell and in the morning my lawyer would be contacted and I would be allowed my phone call. Sometime later in the day there would be a court appearance and hopefully I would get bail and be able to go home.

I was locked into the cell on my own my hand cuffs were removed through a hatch in the door. I sat there looking at four concrete walls on a bench that was also a bed with a thin mattress on it. There was a blanket sitting on the mattress. There was a metal toilet in one corner with a small wash basin on top of it. Gross I thought. I was extremely worried as I had no idea what was going to happen to me. However I knew I had done nothing wrong. And all being well would be able to get bailed out later. The other thing that worried me was what I could be charged with as it could affect my teaching career. I also needed to contact my school to let them know I would not be in work in the morning.

I was unable to sleep with worry along with the light shining in my cell window. It seemed like a very long night. Every so often somebody would walk by and shine a torch in the window checking me. The light in my cell came on and it seemed very bright to my sleepy eyes as I heard the door being banged on

"Get up" a loud male voice shouted."

I jumped from under my blanket. I must have fallen asleep eventually. It took me a moment to realise where I was but had no idea what the time was. I stretched and got up, hovered over the toilet. I used the thin toilet paper and then flushed. I washed my hands and face and sat back on the bed or should I call it a bench. It seemed like I had loads of time to worry about my future as I had very little idea what would happen beyond court later that day. The hatch in the cell door was opened and a bottle of water, an almost black banana along with a wrapped sandwich was placed in it. An officer said here's your breakfast. I ate the food and my stomach was not impressed.

When I finished I decided to do some exercises to pass the time. It was quite lonely in there as there was no other activity to be seen and only the distant noise of the offices somewhere else in the building. I decided to count the number of blocks that the walls were built with just to try to get my mind away from worrying the whole time. I began to wonder when I would get my phone call and contact my lawyer. I decided to try Jules Carson a lawyer who lived on my street. I knew him and had baby sat his children Andrea and Simon while in college. From what I had heard he had a good reputation and the fact that I knew him should help and I hoped it would not cost me too much as I had spent most of my savings on a car recently. I wondered what I was going to be charged with as I could not hear clearly from last night with all the noise on the street.

As all these thoughts were going through my head I heard the door being opened. It was only the hatch below the window that was being opened. An officer asked me to stand with my back to the door and put my hands through the hatch. I did as asked as I knew there was nothing to be gained by arguing. Once cuffed the door was opened.

"We are bringing you to where you can make your phone call and contact a lawyer" the police officer said.

I phoned home for what was a very difficult situation for me and my mother Christina neither of us had any idea what I was to do. I could hear the emotion in her voice as we spoke as I tried to explain what had happened. My parents were on the point of calling the police to report me missing as I had not come home and none of my friends knew what had happened other than I had left with Ali. Mum agreed to ask Jules Carson to represent me. Mum said she would contact him as well in case I could not.

I had to ask an officer for a pen and paper to write down Jules Carson's contact details. I then contacted his office and organised for him to represent me. He said he would try to meet with me as soon as possible and before I was due in court. I did not know when I was due in court as nobody had told me. When I finished the hand cuffs were put back on and I was walked back to my cell. The door was locked behind me and the cuffs were removed in the door hatch. I wondered why they needed to cuff me for the short walk to the cell but I guessed it was standard procedure in case anybody became violent or was another means of showing who was in control.

I decided to do some yoga exercises followed by some gym type exercises just to pass the time. I then realised I needed to wash. All I could find was a small towel and some soap in the hygiene kit I was given, I wondered was there a shower available. I decided to ask the next time an officer came to check on me. In the meantime I tried to figure out the best way to wash if no shower was available because I did not want to smell of BO in court.

A short while later I heard the rattle of keys as someone was in the corridor. I went over to the door to try to attract their attention as the hatch was opened.

"McPherson turn around and put your hands through the hatch."

I obeyed and I felt hand cuffs being clamped around my wrists. The cell door opened and the officer said

"McPhearson come with me you have a visitor."

"Can I ask you something Sir?" I asked.

"No questions" was the curt reply.

I decided it would be best to say no more as this officer did not appear to be of the helpful type.

I was brought to a small room and when I stepped inside I saw Jules Carson standing in there behind a small table. The officer said he would be outside the door as he removed the hand cuffs.

"Hello Rachel you are the last person I expected to see in here" he said as he shook my hand. I felt like I was about to burst into tears.

"Thank you so much for coming I can't express how I feel but I hope you understand and thank you again."

I know what happened but I don't understand why it happened" I continued.

"I know this is going to be difficult for you but can you tell me what happened before you were arrested?"

"I was at a small school reunion and got talking to Ali who I had not met for a few years. She and I had been good friends at school as part of a group of six or seven of us that hung around together. We were talking for a good while when I said I would need to book a taxi to get home. She said her boyfriend was to pick her up and I could travel with them as they were passing near my home. That sounded fine to me at the time.

When we got to the car I sat in the back behind Ali while Jack, Ali's boyfriend drove. Jack lit a cigarette and Ali asked him to put it out. He threw it out the window as we drove down the street. Very soon after that a police car appeared and we had to pull over. I don't think we had gone one block when we were pulled over. Very soon after that some more police cars appeared and they searched our pockets and purses. We were hand cuffed and read our rights and we were put into separate police cars. I then ended up here."

"How far had you gone when the police stopped you?"

"I don't think we had gone more than a block, so I only spent about a minute or two in the car before we were stopped."

"Did you have your phone switched on and do you have GPS on it?"

"Yes to both."

"That means we can trace your time in the car and where you went. Did you turn off your phone and do you need a password to access it?"

"I did after recording some of what the police did and yes I have a pass code on it."

"I have to ask you this but have you ever been arrested before."

"No nothing not even a parking fine or a speeding ticket."

"Thank you. You are due to go to court in the next few hours. We hope you will be able to get bail and be able to go home and then we can deal with whatever you are charged with. At the moment your only crime appears to be in the wrong car at the wrong time and that's not a crime. I will speak to you before court which is nearby and you will be brought there by the police I expect. I hope all goes well for you"

"Thank you I really appreciate you doing this for me."

"Just to warn you they will probably put you in hand cuffs and leg shackles when they bring you to court, so much for innocent until proven guilty. We will talk soon and keep your spirits up I know this is tough for you as it's your first time being involved with the police but I will do my very best to help you."

He called in the officer outside the door and I was returned to my cell.

Some short time later I heard somebody at the cell door and a sandwich along with carton of milk was passed through the hatch. I ate the sandwich and drank the milk although neither was very appealing.

Very soon after that an officer came to the door and asked me to stand with my back to the door and put my hands through it. I did so and I felt the metallic cuffs being applied to my wrists they felt tighter than before. I was brought to the booking area where I was told I was due in court shortly. I had my ankles shackled with a chain in between them and chain locked around my waist. Hand cuffs were attached to the chain and my hands were uncuffed and then recuffed to the waist chain. I was brought out to a waiting minivan by two officers. I had having difficulty walking with the chain between my ankles as I could not move freely.

The side door of the minivan was opened revealing a metal box with a steel door on it. The steel door was opened and I was asked to get in and sit on the bench inside. It was only a five minute journey to the court house but it felt a lot longer as I could not see where I was going. I could hear somebody else in another steel cell close to me but had no idea who.

When I got the court house I was brought into a holding area where there were two long benches to sit on. There were five others there along with me three men and a young woman who looked like she was barely out of school and an older African American woman, all chained like me. Two officers supervised us and we were not allowed to speak to each other. One of the three men was brought out I assumed to the courtroom. Another officer appeared and came over to me telling me I was going to meet my lawyer. The officer brought me to meet Jules in a small ante room where there was a table and three chairs.

I knew from Jules expression things were not good.

"Hello Rachel I am afraid I have bad news and I think it best to tell you straight. Over twenty kilograms of cocaine were found in the car you were in."

"What......what does that mean for me but I guess it is not good?" I asked as my stomach went into knots and my heart started to thump in my chest.

"First it means it's unlikely you can be bailed out today and that means you could end up spending the next few days in the county jail and hopefully we'll get you out then. First we have to get through today and we will deal with that. I expect you will be formally charged in the next few minutes. With that there was a knock on the door and two plain clothed police officers identified themselves and formally charged me with possession of twenty three kilograms of cocaine.

I sat and cried as my emotions overwhelmed me. I knew in my soul that I was going to spend time in jail despite knowing I had nothing to do with the coke and had no knowledge of it being in the car. I took a little while to compose myself, and the officers said that I was due in court very shortly.

"Rachel are you okay."

"I'll manage I assume we are pleading not guilty."

"Yes, why would you do otherwise we will have to prove your innocence and I believe we can do that. I will see you soon."

I was brought into the courtroom. I could see my Mum, Dad my brother and my sister in the public gallery. I sat in a secure area at the side of the courtroom before I was asked to confirm my name and my rights were read out. My charge of possession was read out and was asked how I wished to plead?

"Not guilty your honour." I replied.

The prosecution asked that bail be refused on the basis of the large amount of narcotics that were found in the vehicle I was traveling in.

Jules Carson asked for bail on the basis that I had a clean record.

The judge said as this case was out of their normal jurisdiction he had no choice but to remand me in the county jail until Tuesday when there would be a court sitting to decide on bail at 10A.M.

Jules Carson asked if he could speak privately with his client as they had only been formally advised of any charges less than ten minutes before I took the stand. The judge gave us fifteen minutes.

We met in the same room as they did before going into the court room. I was in hand cuffs and shackles with two officers outside the door.

Jules spoke first.

"I am sorry I could not do any more for you in there but this court cannot rule on cases that are at this level. I am going to tell you what I suspect will happen over the next few days. You will be brought to the county jail where you will have to go through the booking process. They will ask for your name, address, medical details if you are taking drugs, are pregnant plus a lot of very personal stuff, and it will probably happen where others can hear all about it. This process seems to be designed to be as unpleasant as possible even for people on remand. The worst part by far will be the strip search which seems to be designed to humiliate and degrade people as much as possible."

I felt like I was about to cry.

"I am sorry there is nothing that we can do about it all I can do is to warn you and hopefully prepare you as much as possible. I want you to try to stay positive and not show emotion when this happens and I know this will probably be very difficult for you. You will have to follow all instructions as rebelling will only get you into trouble and make life more difficult. Any questions so far?"

"Will I have to take off all my clothes?" I sobbed.

"Unfortunately yes and in front of a number of officers and others going to jail. Part of the search involves you having to show there is nothing in your hair, under your arms, between your fingers there is virtually no where they will not look. Every part of your body that will be looked at including your most private parts. I am telling you this so you have some time to mentally prepare yourself. After the search you will probably have to take a shower again usually with no privacy."
