Rose's eyes widened. Their Uber had just pulled away when she saw the "Permanently Closed" sign on the front door of the nightclub.
"God damn it," Ginny said.
Rose walked up and read the note posted under the sign. "Domingo's thanks its loyal customers for their patronage over the years," she said, reading off the sign. She stepped back and looked at the façade. "Well, shit," she said.
"I can't believe the driver didn't tell us it was closed," Ginny said.
"Maybe he didn't know," Rose said.
"What now?"
"I guess we call another Uber and head home."
"Screw that, I wanted a night out and I still do. We deserve it. What about Harvey's a couple of blocks over?"
"That place always seems sketchy to me."
"What else then?"
"I don't know. A bar?"
"We've got drinks at home, and I wanted to dance tonight. Also, all the bars around here suck."
Rose thought it over, slowly turning in place as she looked around, waiting for inspiration to strike her from on high. It didn't. "Fuck it," she said after a moment's time, "let's try Harvey's."
They walked at a fast pace, not wanting to be out on the streets any longer than necessary. It seemed like every other streetlight was out and it was too chilly for just the shirts and jeans they were wearing. Luckily there were few other people out and no one approached them, but Rose had her head on a swivel anyway the whole walk, just in case danger would jump out at them any second.
Soon enough they were standing in line outside of Harvey's. It was a slow-moving line. Rose looked around while they waited. They could hear some of the music from inside already and it sounded horrible, like somebody's brother's first-time garage band. There were only a few women in line, mostly it was older guys, and none of them attractive. A couple of them were blatantly checking Rose and Ginny out.
"Maybe this wasn't a great idea," Ginny said, obviously feeling the same.
"Let's get out of here," Rose said, and the two women turned and started walking away. Rose started to pull her phone out of her purse to request an Uber.
"Hey!" a voice called out. Rose and Ginny looked up. Half a block away, standing under the awning of a closed storefront, were two women. One of them waved to Rose and Ginny to come closer. Rose and Ginny looked at each other, shrugged, and walked over to them.
The two women looked to be about ten years older, tall, wearing stylish black leather jackets and black jeans. One had short, sandy-blond hair and what looked like a broad physique under her clothes. Her slightly less imposing companion had long black straight hair. The light-haired woman had her arm around the other.
"Decided to skip that scene, huh?" the light-haired one said.
"Wasn't our kind of place," Ginny said.
"Yeah, Harvey's has always been sketchy," the woman said.
"That's what I said," Rose said.
"Great minds think alike," the woman with light hair said. She had an easy smile. "I'm Cass."
"And I'm Mei," her companion said.
"Nice to meet you," Ginny said. "I'm Ginny and this is Rose."
"We were going to go someplace else, but it was closed," Rose said.
"Domingo's?" Mei said.
"Yeah."
"Shame that place closed. I liked it."
"Do you know what happened to it?" Ginny asked.
"I thought I heard that the owner sold it and retired," Cass said.
"Can you blame him?" Mei said. "I mean, take the money and run."
"Yeah," Ginny said, "but it was pretty much the only decent place to go out to without the creeps hitting on you all the time."
"Well," Rose said, "we should probably head on home. Have a good night."
"Hey, here's an idea," Cass said. "You two seem friendly and not crazy. Why don't you both come over to our place? We'll hang out."
Rose was about to say thanks but no thanks when Ginny said, "What did you have in mind?" Rose tried her best keep to a poker face on and resist the temptation to punch her roommate in the arm.
"We've got some drinks and other refreshments," Cass said. "We can hang out, relax, and when you're ready to go we'll call you a cab."
"I don't know," Rose said.
"We promise that we don't bite," Mei said, smiling.
Rose was just about to politely decline the offer when Ginny said, "Okay." Rose shot her a quick look, then turned back to the two strange women.
"It's settled, then," Cass said. "We're parked only a block away, this way." She and Mei started walking away, and Rose and Ginny followed.
"Why did you say that?" Rose whispered to Ginny, trying to keep her voice as low as possible so that they wouldn't be heard.
"I don't know," Ginny said, "they seem okay. Besides, it's better than just going home. Maybe it'll be fun."
Rose resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She briefly considered leaving on her own, but she didn't want to abandon her roommate.
Their car was a luxury sedan, parked only a couple blocks away. Rose and Ginny piled into the back seat.
"This is a nice car," Ginny said.
"Oh, yeah," Mei said, laughing, "we've got all the best toys."
They drove to one of the more gentrified neighborhoods near downtown, a decent size two-story with a small lawn around it on all sides. Cass pulled into the garage and turned off the engine. The women followed their hosts into the mud room, leaving their shoes and purses there at Cass' direction.
They walked into the living room, which was lovely -- large but not overwhelming, nicely furnished in a contemporary style, large flatscreen TV on one wall, off-white deep chairs and sofa, geometric art pieces adorning a couple of the walls. Rose and Ginny sat down next to each other on the sofa. Cass and Mei each took a chair, Cass on their right, Mei on their left.
"What would you like to drink?" Cass said.
"Do you have any beer?" Ginny asked.
"Oh, we can do better than beer. One second," and Cass disappeared into the kitchen. She returned a minute later with a bottle and several glasses. "Help me with this," she said to Mei, and Mei grabbed the bottle from her while Cass put the glasses onto the coffee table.
"What is it?" Ginny asked.
Mei raised the bottle to show them the label. "Bushmills whiskey."
Cass poured a third of a glass for each of them and then handed them around before everyone resumed their seat. She raised her glass. "A toast," she said, "to new friends."
Everyone else returned the toast and started drinking. Rose sipped and immediately made a face. She'd had whiskey maybe once in her entire life before then.
"That's strong," Ginny said, grinning.
"You like that, you'll love this," Mei said. She went over to a small chest by the window and from it drew out a lacquered wooden box that she put on the coffee table next to the bottle. She said, "Voila," and opened it for Ginny and Rose to see rolled joints nestled inside.
"Ooooh," Ginny said. Rose wasn't nearly as thrilled as Ginny. She knew Ginny was an occasional smoker. Her own few experiences with marijuana in college had largely been disappointing.
Mei passed a joint around to each of the women. Despite her own reluctance, Rose accepted hers; she felt it would've been rude to decline. Cass lit her own while Mei lit the joints for Rose and Ginny before returning to her seat to light her own.
Rose took a puff and immediately started coughing. Whatever this was, it wasn't what she remembered from her one previous time of partaking years ago.
"God damn," Ginny said, sampling her own joint.
"I know, right?" Mei said.
"Where did you get this?"
"It's good to know the right people."
"Fuck yeah," Ginny said, taking another hit. Rose took another puff and managed to avoid coughing that time. Still, she could already fill her head starting to swim a little. She washed down the taste of the weed with some whiskey, which she was enjoying more of with every sip.
"So," Mei said, "how long have you two been together?"
Rose sputtered, glad that she hadn't been drinking when the question was asked.
"Oh no," Ginny said, "we're just roommates."
"Yeah, that's what me and Mei are, roommates," Cass said, winking.
"Really close roommates," Mei said, laughing.
"No, really, we are just roommates," Rose said. "We're straight."
"Relax," Cass said, "we're just teasing. How'd you two meet up?"
