(Chapter 5)
Colin Calvorson was freaking out.
He had banked his entire Christmas gift-giving plan for his wife, Juliet, around this blender, the Neptune Deluxe Blender. That might sound strange, making the centerpiece of the gifts for his wife a kitchen appliance. But by all accounts, it was an amazing blender. Plus, Juliet was very health conscious and savvy in the kitchen, so having this blender to make smoothies or other stuff made it the perfect gift.
Unfortunately, it seemed like tons of other people felt the same way, meaning that it was one of the most popular gifts of the season. This sucker was near impossible to find, and if you found one, you were among the chosen few. You could not find it on shelves. You couldn't find it online.
But Colin had an in. He'd dug around, and found a source on a blender, on a site that was a bit, uh... under the radar. But nonetheless, he'd found one. Sure, the timing was gonna be a bit tight, but he'd purchased one of these Neptune Blenders and it was on its way. But as Christmas got closer, he got more nervous, and he found himself calling the shipping company, trying to do anything to expedite things. Finally, the sucker was set to arrive today, on Christmas Eve, better late than never. The whole morning, both at the Church and at the parade, Colin had been checking his phone, making sure it was delivered. Finally, midway through the parade, it had arrived, and Colin wanted nothing more than to get back home and make sure everything was all good with the blender. Then, he could breathe easy.
So, seconds after arriving home, he marched to the living room, where a large box addressed to him was resting. He grabbed it, marched up to his old bedroom and ripped it open, looking down at the blender he'd spent so long trying to procure. And as he studied the box, his heart dropped.
What the hell was the 'Nepturn Deluxxxe Blernder'?
No... this can't be. He ripped open the box, examining the contents, hoping this was some sort of misprint. But no... no... no... this wasn't it. This wasn't right at all. This wasn't what he ordered. He'd been ripped off. Checking out the contents of the box, it was not what it was supposed to be. This was some cheap, shoddy knockoff. Not the real thing. The seller had guaranteed him it was the right thing, and Colin had paid a lot more than the standard cost to get this thing. Sure, the site he ordered from wasn't exactly an, uh... official website... but he expected better. And now?
He was screwed.
The centerpiece of his gifts to his wife was gone. He couldn't give her this trash. What would Juliet think if he gave her something that was so obviously garbage? Would she think he cared that little about her? No... he couldn't let that happen. He had to do something. Running back downstairs, he found his coat, pulling it back on, catching the attention of his wife.
"Where are you going?" Juliet asked sweetly. "We just got back..."
"Uh..." Colin began. "Christmas gift emergency."
"Oh..." she replied. "Well, if it's on my behalf, don't worry about it. I'd much rather have you stay around and hang out with your family." She said, stepping into him as she wrapped her arms around him, hugging him lovingly.
Juliet really was a sweetheart. The slim, short brunette was pretty as can be, with an incandescent smile, kind spirit, and unfailing patience. He was the type of guy who was always moving, always hustling, and she was so calm and patient and friendly. Working at a nonprofit, these qualities served her well. She was a good balance for him, to slow him down and let him live in the moment. Working in a pretty high-powered sales job, it was often difficult to turn that side of him off, and he'd learned a lot from her in that respect.
Despite all his hustle and confidence, he hadn't always had the most success in his personal life. At least in terms of forming real, personal connections with women. Sure, for years, as a handsome, fit, well-dressed young man who was brimming with confidence, he'd never had trouble getting action. And being a young, successful guy in his field of work who wasn't afraid to party, he attracted a certain kind of girl. Party girls, sluts, cunning young women who zeroed in on rich, handsome men. And while he was savvy enough to avoid being bled out of his hard-earned savings by these enterprising gold-diggers, his fondness for large-breasted women always kept himself within their reach. He'd spend a lot of times in bars, night clubs, and strip clubs, and leaving alone was never a problem for him. And for quite a few years, he enjoyed this life. For as successful as Colin was, he was immature, and had no issue living a life of making money, partying, and one night stands. But even he had to grow up, and he eventually realized that all these encounters were leaving him feeling hollow. He stepped back from that lifestyle, focusing on bettering himself, ignoring some of his more immature instincts. There were some growing pains making this change, and he still had that charm and braggadocio that always led him into trouble. But he was actually trying to do better.
And it had paid off.
Even he was surprised land a woman who was not only beautiful but kind and loving and patient and understanding. When he met Juliet and found himself falling for her, he kinda felt like he wasn't worthy of her. He was this guy who was all flash and charm, and she was this girl of true substance. She was too good for him. That was why he was always working to make sure Juliet didn't see any weakness in him, any flaw that might make her realize she could do better. He couldn't afford to blow it with her, which is why this gift was so important to him.
"Sorry..." he replied. "It's a BIG Christmas emergency."
"Oh..." Juliet said with a cute grimace, seeing that her husband's heart was set. "Well... hurry back." She said, smiling up at him. She was so cute. Shoulder length brown hair. Bright, loving hazel eyes. Creamy skin, with a light smattering of freckles. And, hidden behind her relatively conservative outerwear, she had a pretty nice body. Slim, with nice, firm legs, a cute butt, and nice, well-formed B-cup breasts. He couldn't wait to get this done and get back to her.
"I will," he replied, smiling and kissing his wife, not showing any of the panic he was feeling.
Not knowing what to do and where he was even gonna go, he found himself in his car, heading downtown. As he did, he developed a plan. He'd hit up some of the stores downtown, hoping against hope that maybe he'd get lucky and find an actual Neptune Blender. Maybe someone returned one last minute. Maybe so many people figured there wouldn't be one out there that there might actually be some in stock. He'd check the major stores, then some of the lower-tier stores. If he didn't find anything, he figured he could find a jewelry store downtown and pick up something. He didn't have an eye for that kind of thing, and Juliet wasn't necessarily one for outward displays of wealth, but it was better than nothing.
Hopefully, it wouldn't come to that.
But alas, Colin's hopes were dashed.
He went to every high-end store he could, and all of them were out of stock of these prized blenders. Some workers almost laughed at him for asking, but Colin didn't have time for that kind of thing. He just needed the blender. Store after store... out of stock. He always felt with enough work, he could make anything happen, but even he was beginning to panic.
He did have a thought, though. What about the Capital-Mart? Sure, it was pretty much a standard department store, a regional store that was often the main shopping location for people in this area, the type of place he loathed going, but there was an upside. With the arrival of the 'North Pole' plant nearby, Capital-Mart had paired up with them, adding to their supply these higher quality products. While it may seem like a place with zero chance of having the blender, Colin surmised there was a small chance of success.
Entering the place, he wasn't shocked to find it busy. People like him looking for last minute gifts. Families shopping for last minute supplies. And of course, as it always was in places like this, the dregs of the Earth were clogging up the works. Steering clear of these folks, he pushed his way through the crowds, eager to make it to the appliance section.
Even though Capital-Mart had always been kind of low-end in his mind, it had improved somewhat since his last visit. With the partnership with 'North Pole', they'd added some more modern looking displays and higher-end products to them. The place did look a bit cleaner, but some of the more unpleasant traces of the old store still came through. Moving with a purpose, he moved towards the back of the store.
He was surprised to see a whole big, fancy Santa display there, a large, decorated, ginger-bread house, with elves standing on either side. And next to the big house was a Santa Claus sitting on a big chair with kids on his knee as he took their Christmas wishes.
