"Did you see the email?"
It took Danny a few moments to respond to Becca. She had woken him up from a nap. He was pretty sure he hadn't seen the email she was referring to since he had no idea what she was talking about. The tremor in her voice scared him. He replied with a hesitating "no..."
"School is closed. Classes are all remote now. Dorms are closed. This fucking virus..." Now Becca was crying.
"Holy shit." He was awake now, but still getting his bearings. His friend Alex had predicted this would happen but Danny had dismissed him. He couldn't imagine that school would be closed for a virus, but here he was. And Becca sounded like she was breaking down. He had learned she cried much more easily than him from watching movies, but he was confused. Cancelled school didn't sound that bad to him."
"I-I-won't see-see-see you again until the fall." And then the full weight of what had just happened hit him. The best thing to happen to him was over. Or paused. He'd been getting his hopes up that he'd lose his virginity to her before summer. Alex, Kevin, Jason all said it was a sure thing as long as he didn't shit the bed. Well now it was surely not going to happen. Danny wasn't going to be able to get back into his dorm. The three day trip to see his parents was now going to last for months. Would he even be able to go back to get his things and say goodbye? His mind was racing, but now he had only one job: calm his girlfriend down."
"Hey, hey, it's going to be okay."
"No it's not! Every day it gets worse. People are dying all over. They think New York is going to be a disaster. You probably can't come back until the fall. Until then, I'm stuck here with Katie. And probably Scott." Becca liked Katie just fine. They hadn't met before becoming roommates. Scott was a different story. He was her boyfriend, and he just made Becca and Danny uncomfortable. Katie and Scott were definitely fucking, and they didn't care who knew. It made Becca and Danny more than a little uncomfortable.
"Hey, now. We can still talk and text. And we can video call. And it'll be like I'm right there."
She was on her way to being cried out. "But it won't be the same. And it's just so sad and scary."
"We're going to be okay."
"I hope so."
"Trust me."
Becca and Danny had been dating for just a couple of months, but things were already getting serious. He'd stopped himself from saying "I love you" twice, not because he didn't know if he meant it, but because he was worried it'd be too much too soon.
What he didn't know was that Becca had already made up her mind about Danny, and she was just waiting for the day that he said it so that she could tell him that she loved him too. All of her friends had told her that men get scared off if the girl says it too soon. She had decided that she would tell him after a year whether he said it or not. But after just three months, she has ample hope that he would beat her. They had become friends in the fall, but only started actively dating in January. Neither had any relationship experience before, so things were moving at a snail's pace. Katie was constantly amused by the lack of sexual progress. Both Danny and Becca had come from somewhat sheltered backgrounds. Becca's parents were strict Christians, and Danny was an oldest child and an incredibly shy and awkward teenager in high school. His first two years of college had given him a small circle of friends, but he had never been successful with the opposite sex. Until Becca.
From the moment they'd found themselves sharing a booth at lunch after class in November, they'd clicked. She was quick to share her phone number and texting info. They chatted daily, hanging out at least once a week. And finally in January, he had gotten the nerve to ask if they could be in a relationship. She asked him why he hadn't kissed her, and he told her he was nervous. "Well don't you think we should kiss if we're going to date?" And he finally corrected that the next time they were together.
And here they were. Just a couple months later and just kissing. Becca wanted more, a lot more, but she knew he was nervous and did not want to scare him. He was the sweetest guy she'd ever known. She didn't want to scare him off by being too forward or sexual.
And now she had to wait even longer before losing her virginity to the boy she had fallen in love with.
The first two nights they stayed up late, talking, laughing and joking. But by the third night, he could tell something was wrong. She was quieter. Giving one syllable answers to his questions. Not her same laughing self.
"Becca."
"Yeah?"
"Something's wrong. What happened?"
"I had a panic attack."
"What's that?"
"I felt like I couldn't breath, and my heart was racing, and I couldn't stop crying." She had started to sob again.
"Oh, Becca."
"Yeah..."
"You've sounded so miserable."
"I am miserable! People are dying every day, I'm stuck inside every day, we can't see each other, the dumbest fucking person in the world is running the country. Everything fucking sucks!"
He couldn't think of a good response. So the silence hung there for a few moments until she spoke.
"I miss you so much."
"I know. Me too."
With nothing left to say, they said their goodbyes. The next two nights weren't much better. He could hear her sadness and fear, but he could only comfort her so much. The panic attacks continued. By the fourth night apart she was a wreck. Three hours became thirty minutes. He could tell she wasn't up for a long conversation. And hearing her like this hurt him too much. Both could barely sleep all night. The next morning, they both stayed in their rooms, reading and occasionally texting. Until-
A knock at her door. "Becca." Katie was gently calling her.
"Yeah?" Becca wasn't in the mood to talk or come out (she looked like a mess), but Katie had always been a good roommate and a friend. Lately, she hasn't been her favorite person though. They did their best to keep them down, but the constant sex sounds from Katie and Scott were making Becca more than a little jealous.
"Can I come in?"
Against her better judgement, Becca agreed, "Okay."
Katie opened and closed the door quietly, and took a seat on Becca's bed. She could tell her friend had been up all night crying instantly. "Oh Becca." She reached out to run a hand through her hair, but it became a strong hug as Becca collapsed in her arms crying.
"I just can't stop thinking about everything. I know I should turn the news off, but I can't help it. It's all so awful. And it just keeps getting worse every day. There's nothing I can do."
Katie held her and let her cry until she was ready to listen. When Becca stopped, Katie spoke:
"We can tell. You've been a mess the last few days."
"Sorry."
"No! Don't be sorry! It's not your fault. If anyone should be sorry, it's me. I'd probably be even more of a mess without Scott."
And that set off a whole new round of tears. "And Danny is so far away, and I don't know when we'll be together again!"
Katie rubbed her back, gathered her breath. Now was the time to start. "He seems like a great boyfriend."
"He really is."
"Do you think he gets jealous easily?"
"I've never seen him get jealous. Why?"
"Cause I have an idea for something that may help. It worked for me at least. But it won't work if he's the jealous type."
"He's not the jealous type as far as I know, but what are you talking about?" Katie could see Becca's confusion all over her face.
"Well Okay, hear me out before you say anything okay?"
"...Okay"
"Okay so before Scott and I started dating, I used to be really high strung."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I was a mess."
"You're the most chill person I know."
"Yeah, well that's the power of sex."
A pause. Becca was looking at her friend. A feeling had crept into the pit of her stomach. "What is your idea?"
Now Katie was the nervous one. "Okay, well I'm not saying have sex with him, but maybe just let him give you a massage and go down on you? He really is amazing, and he said he'd be willing to do it if you and Danny were okay with it, and I know it's weird, but I think it'd really help." Now Katie was the nervous one, averting her eyes.
"Are you serious?"
"Yes! You're my best friend here and I want to help."
"But isn't that like cheating?"
"No! Cheating is if he goes behind my back. Which he never would. And you're my friend. And This would help. A lot."
"Really?"
"Yes. I wouldn't risk our friendship and your relationship if I didn't think it would."
"Yeah, I don't think Danny would be okay with that."
But she didn't say no. Katie saw an opening.
"Can you just ask him?"
"I don't know. I don't what to make him mad." She still hadn't said no. Katie was getting excited. She decided to press it.
Please ask him? You never know. And this isn't anything romantic. It's just a massage. With an added bonus."
They both laughed.
Katie rose. Now she was the nervous one. Asking had been scarier than she thought. "Just think about it okay? It's okay if you don't want to, but I really think it would help."
As Becca sat there stunned, she realized that she actually was feeling better. She was too shocked and confused to feel sorry for herself. She did the only thing she could think to do. She called Danny. This wasn't just a texting conversation.
"Hey," She could tell he was tired from the tone of his voice.
"Soooo the weirdest thing happened."
He perked up. This was not the same Becca he had been speaking with the last few nights. She sounded cheerful almost. Alert. Not on the verge of a breakdown. "What happened?"
"Katie just came in here and said that Scott should give me oral."
"What?!" Now he was awake too. She started to giggle at his reaction.
