I sat shoulder to shoulder with Stelle while Hannah rambled on and on about how frustrated she was with the knots. Landon had the unfortunate responsibility of keeping an eye on us while we sat and braided bracelets for each other. His arm was thrown across the back of my chair, every line and ridge of him was filled with boredom though his eyes watched me deftly weave and tie off the strands.
There were a few new faces around here, Catherine was a skittish and quiet little mouse. Her back sat ramrod straight, and her fingers were pale and long like the rest of her. I wouldn't call her plain, that wasn't the right word at all, but she came across as something usual nonetheless.
Hannah was a loudmouth, boisterous, and crude person. You could hear her laugh and the popping of her gum a mile away no doubt. She was fit and wildly endowed, her breasts just looked like they hurt her back and her ass put mine to shame. Even now she screamed at a joke that wasn't even funny so loudly it almost irritated you but you found yourself laughing along anyway.
When I looked at her a form of jealousy settled on my tongue. She was Landon's woman, ex, whatever. His just the same, and she was nothing like me, not even the color of her nail beds matched mine. I wondered about her, what it is that drew him in that even now he laughed along with her.
Looked at her.
Wanted her.
It dampened my mood more than it should. More than I'd ever admit.
"I don't get how you're all enjoying this?" Erik groaned from the couch, put off by murdering that girl no doubt, we were all avoiding talking about it as well.
Poor girl, even if I didn't like her it felt weird to know she spent her last moments with us, scared out of her mind.
"Come try for yourself," Des held up her finished product for us to gawk at. It wasn't very good but I wouldn't tell her that.
"That's terrible." Stelle frowned and took stock of her own, "I did way better."
She groaned and pointed a finger, tapping it to Stelle's nose, "You're just jealous because I used all the pink thread."
"I think I'd be more put off if you didn't." Catherine whined, giving up on hers altogether. I took it gently from her and redid her knots until it was right again and handed it back. "Thank you." She giggled and went right back to work.
I tied off the blue and black string and set it aside, sifting through the box of thread to make another. Landon silently pulled red and green from under my nose and taped the ends down, starting one of his own. I let him be, I loved it when the boys did something normal with us.
"Opal?" Hannah breathed and I looked away from him, leaning forward to my new friend. Her beautiful, bouncy dirty blonde hair, brown cat eyes, and a smile that made you miss home. I loved it when she smiled, I would do anything to see it again.
Everything about her screamed Miss. Homegrown, the type where she leaves apple pie in the windowsill and drinks sweet tea in a rocking chair on her front porch.
"Yes?"
"Who do you think is the most attractive man out of the group?" Her eyes flashed and I knew she put me in a corner. Erik and Landon's ears perked and I groaned knowing my answer would reach Jamie's ears.
"Jamie." I pursed my lips and went back to work.
"Told you." Stelle cocked a brow and ruffled my hair, mimicking me, "Jamie, Jamie, Jamie."
I rolled my neck and set the bracelet aside, giving a long side eye until it clicked. Lips parted into 'o's and everyone deftly went back to work. "I think he's very cute, nice butt too."
Giggles flew about the table as everyone but Landon knew we were talking about him.
"What about him drew you in?" She pestered anyways, hair draped over one shoulder.
"Intelligence was the first thing I noticed, conversation wasn't bad, and he has an amazing body." I mused softly.
"Jamie and intelligence don't ever belong together in the same sentence." Eric sneered with a grin, "If you want someone intelligent you've got Brains right there foaming at the mouth."
Landon flipped him off and wrapped his completed bracelet around my wrist, securing it far too tightly and started on another. I gawked at the skill and was practically bouncing in my seat. "It's beautiful!"
He shrugged it off and crossed strong arms over his bare chest, it was nice seeing him without the stuffy dress shirt but man did I miss it too. "It's cultural, my mom showed me how a long time ago."
"What culture?"
"Irish." He said simply, drawing attention to his hair, "didn't get that color from nothing."
I kept my smile to myself and took to admiring the bracelet, he gave me something. I wasn't sure why it meant so much to me.
After we were done and everyone's arms were filled with the gifts we made each other, we cornered Eric and got two on him before he made his escape. Landon gladly accepted any bracelets given to him and wore them with pride. When it was my turn to wrap mine around his wrist nerves got the best of me and I quickly set it aside.
I wasn't sure if he noticed, I hoped he didn't.
We gathered to watch a scary movie and bundled under many blankets, the volume was cranked up to where I couldn't even hear my own thoughts and I was glad for it. I hated missing Jamie, he left everyday to run 'errands' and I was stuck with two of his miserable friends until he came home.
I stole a look at Landon and decided today wasn't one I could complain about.
Stelle nudged my knees so softly that I almost didn't noticed and I craned my neck slightly to hear her better.
"Sit in his lap."
My eyes flew open, "what?"
"He's into you, I heard him say so, sit in his lap."
"I cant." Was all I could muster as I tried wiping the blush from my cheeks at the prospect. I looked to him again and this time he noticed, cocking his head, and my gaze flitted away.
"Just do it, worst case scenario he says no." She shooed me and I couldn't get ahold of myself.
My eyes were glued to the TV though I absorbed nothing, all I could feel now was his heat. His breath. Even his hair seemed far too close.
"Fuck it." She mouthed.
