He couldn't watch the cleaning process. It always stirred a darkness inside him that he knew he shouldn't entertain. Joseph walked the halls as he made his way to the basement to get a bite to eat. The kitchen cook always left a little something for him in the basement kitchen whenever he would miss dinner. Passing the wine room and another room for supplies, he made his way down the long hallway to the open kitchen at the end.

Laid out neatly under a metal pot were a brick of cheese and a loaf of bread. He smiled and said a silent prayer of health for the thoughtful man. Reaching for the plate Joseph looked at his wrinkling hands. They looked older than they should but he didn't mind. He was doing God's work after all. He would be rewarded for his labors in the afterlife. Taking his small meal he made his way back up the hall to see if all was over when he stopped at a strong metal door. The wine room and supplies were on the right wall but this door was on the opposite side of the hall. Joseph knew what was beyond this door and when no one was around he would always stand before it and entertain fleeting images of what could happen beyond it if he were to ever enter. Because of this he always experienced a feeling of dread mixed with loathing and then the darkness. Cock slowly beginning to rise Joseph took a deep disappointed breath and forced himself to continue down the long hallway and up to the stairs.

Entering where the pews are settled Joseph sat himself down to take a bite of his cheese when he a wiry looking man with straw like hair appears seated in the pew in front of him. "Oh My!" His words were of surprise but not fear though he was sure he was alone when he sat down. "I am sorry my child I did not see you there. Have you come in off the road?" The thin man looked over his shoulder with weary eyes and nodded exhaustedly. "Ahh, then here please partake in some of what the cook has left for me this evening. I know it isn't much but please help yourself." Leaning over the man Joseph held the plate out for the visitor with a welcoming smile. The man whispered an exhausted thank you that was almost missed as Joseph informed him that he would get a room ready for him and made his way back down the stairs to retrieve a pillow and some blankets from the supply room.

The man looked at the plate and smirked. Pulling the bread and cheese in half he put the other small portion into a handkerchief as he waited patiently for the sobbing behind the door to stop.

Liluth came crashing through the door, wet and feeling abused when she saw another man in the room from where she entered. Frozen, she watched him unmoving as the nun screamed her anger from the other side. Liluth didn't mind being called a witch right now, last she saw she was dragged here not the other way around.

The man never moved and Liluth slowly wrapped the hood she had taken around herself and made her way to the big door that could lead to her freedom. Her eyes were on him for a bit which had her walking backwards for a moment before turning as she walked. "You are just going to try and run away again? They will catch you foolish elf and when they do your ears will be shaped to look like theirs."

She stopped inches from the handle. Fear of the pain to come kept her grounded to the spot though she wanted to continue. Turning to face the stick like man the door she had run through came bursting open and Liluth ducked behind the pew that was in front of her. Panting heavy she put her hands over her mouth trying to keep the scream down and get her heart to stop pounding. "Now, now madam that is no language to have in this holy place. If you are looking for the naked thing that ran in here moments ago she went that way."

She had wanted to die when she heard the strange man's voice boom through the room outing her. Slowly she ducked under the wooden seat and watched the nuns' shoes. She was pausing in her direction and Liluth could see why. There was a pool of water at her feet. This was where Liluth was standing when she saw the man then there were small foot prints leading away from her facing the wrong way. A moment more and she was sure the nun was going to come and find her but her shoes turned and hobbled awkwardly away. The bite must have been deeper than she first thought. "You going to come out of hiding now or will you wait for them to find you?"

The man's voice was soft now and Liluth wasn't sure if she should but knew he was right. Leaving her spot under the pew she slowly made her way to him. The man looked almost string like. He looked worn away. As she got closer she was able to see he had a plate of half broken cheese and bread. Hand patting the spot next to him she took this invitation and sat next to him. She whispered to the man "Why didn't you tell her where I was? You will be in so much trouble if they find me with you."

Hair all around his face all she could see were his lips and nose and his hair reminded her of the straw she would feed her horses. "I have no reason to fear these people. They are smaller than most creatures in this world and they can't hurt me." He giggled a youthful giggle which made Liluths' ears perk. Something was different about the man and she couldn't tell what it was. Her father was still teaching her about creatures and their ways when her village was burned.

'There will come a moment when you will only feel a variation of beings. As there are many trickster creatures who will make themselves look like unthreatening beings. Listen to that feeling. It may save you.'

Her father's words were coming back to remind her now. This was no man who she sat next to.

He smiled at her with his hair in his face. He lifted his hand to touch hers when the door the reverend had left though opened. She turned to peer over her shoulder and he waited for the man to come just in view of her when he stopped him. Everything living inside the cathedral was paused like a painting. No steps were heard, no prayers echoing, only her sudden deep breathing as she looked at him. "You are no man sir. I will not pretend to know what you are, so please tell me what I have done to gain your attentions."

There was fear in her deep gray eyes but also a respect he hadn't seen since the church was built on this land and it made him grin. He lived for this. She would be the one to give him what he needs. "You are about to be put though a strife that no creature should have to endure at the hands of these weak monsters. Elves are noble and powerful. Why should you have to suffer alone?"

She looked at him confused and a bit annoyed and he loved it. "So who will suffer with me?"

"Why not the one who brought you to this damnable place?" His grin widened beyond a normal mans grin, teeth shaping into little sharp shards as he watched her eagerly. She looked down to the plate then back up to him. There was a little understanding and vengeance in her eyes and his heart was leaping.

'Calm yourself or you will give it all away too soon. Too soon. She is going to take it.'

Looking to the fat man Liluth pulled the hood from her head. "How is that going to happen? He is powerful and respected among his people. I can't hurt him now."

"Just wait.. just wait and sseee." Hand trembling and twitching with excitement he pushed the plate of cheese and bread closer to her and she looked down at it. "Eeeat... Eat and Sssee.." Picking up the small cheese she took bite after bite then moved to the bread. "Hehehe the more he is human to you the more he will suffer hehehe..."

The bread gone and her belly quieted she looked up at him with determination. "What now?"

"Now you will scream." Snatching at her hand he dug his nails in to her flesh drawing blood as his other hand held a handkerchief.

Liluth screamed in pain and stood to pull away from his claws when the priest ran towards her. She screamed in painful frustration before she ripped her hand from his leaving dagger like marks on her flesh. "DAMN YOU! DAMN YOU, You Monster!" The nun returned with two soldiers and another priest and Liluth began to cry and pull the robe tighter around her with her good hand. The soldiers walked to her, picked her up by her arms, and started to drag her away with the nun and the other holy man right behind them.

Joseph couldn't believe that she had managed to get away from the woman. His pet was a crafty one for sure he thought. Walking back to the wiry man he wanted to see if he was alright. "My child what happened?"

"I think the creature was hungry." His voice was a raspy whisper this time and it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He didn't like it. This was the kind of fear he had when going into dark places that demons hid. "She crept over and tried to take the food I left for you." Joseph looked down and saw the plate was half finished. Half of the bread was gone as well as half the cheese and a small feeling of avoidance started to ball in the pit of his stomach. "She startled me and I reached for her a little too harshly then when I saw she was the elf who had run from the room over there naked I just couldn't let go."

The man coughed a little and Joseph felt a little bad for the man. He was obviously sick and now it seemed his pet had hypnotized him for a moment. If not for him pulling her out from his grasp the silly thing would have just continued to hurt herself instead of getting him to let her go. "I am sorry for all of this. We just brought her here. I didn't expect her to be so troublesome or I would have kept a better eye on her."

"N.." cough "No need to apologize." He pushed his plate to him. "Thank you for the food please enjoy the rest of your meal. I just wanted to come in out of the cold before hurrying home." The man continued to sit there and Joseph had little to say. He would not make the man leave as that was unkind and to ignore the food he had tried to protect for him would be like he was spitting on his actions. The man looked to the cross and seemed to be praying to himself now and Joseph gave up his thoughts on ignoring the food and asking the man to stay. Taking the plate he started to eat the cheese then bread in turn till there was nothing but crumbs. Moments after the thin man stood and made his way from the cathedral. The silence left made Joseph pray to cleanse the place of the heaviness the man left behind.
