"Because I think it's stupid!" Rebecca says loudly to her two friends. She says it louder than what she means to, where she hears her voice carry all over the dark forest. This is because Rebecca is rather fired up at the moment, making her much louder than she normally would be, as well as not embarrassed by it either.

Rebecca, who is known by Becky to her friends, is in the forest behind her neighborhood with her two best friends. They are all eighteen and have grown up together in this very neighborhood, from toddlers to having recently started college.

The small group has always considered themselves to be outsiders, maybe because of how geeky they are. In high school they had each other and caused many of an eye roll with the unique and particular things they liked, such as obscure anime, or silent films or a hundred other things. They were the good girls in school, the smart ones, the ones you knew would be hanging out on Saturday night.

As they often do, the three friends hang out. Only tonight is different and not just because it's Halloween night. It's different because the three sit in the forest, a small fire between them, along with a Quija board and other "magical" items. It is the first time they have attempted the ritual that they are trying to do, even if Becky never wanted to do it.

"It's not stupid, Becky. It's for real. It's Halloween night after all!" Jamie tells her, being almost as loud. Jamie, like Becky, is dressed in a Halloween costume. Jamie's costume is a murder victim from the movie "Jason X." She told her friends she picked this one because the kill effects were impressive, while her friends know it is so she can explain her costumes to others and try and feel that she knows more about horror movies.

"You are going to offend him, now come on, we need to at least finish the ritual or else it could bring trouble," Jessica, who is the third friend of the group, tells Becky. The manner she says this makes it clear she feels that Becky is the rude one.

"No, I'm not. I'm not finishing shit," Becky declares, having had enough of her two best friends for the evening. Becky is a very timid person by nature, so when she fully stands up for herself, it is quite a sight. It happens very, very rarely and normally only with her two friends. But when it happens nothing can dissuade her.

"I'm tired of this crap. It's all that you two do any more. And I am not going to waste my time tonight of all nights with this...crap," Becky tells the two women, motioning to all the spell craft items that her friends brought. There is quite a bit of spell craft items about as Jaime and Jessica took a lot of time arranging them so they appeared just right.

"It's Halloween. Surely there's a party that even we can get into. Somewhere to hang out, party and have a spooky good time," Becky says, stating what she wants to do this evening to her friends, again.

"I know you two are big into this, witchcraft-spell craft-mother Gaia-summon the devil stuff, but I'm not. It's stupid. It's dumb and most of all, it's not real. I don't get why you two keep pretending it is, when you are supposedly even smarter than I am," Becky continues, unleashing her true feelings on her friends. The last bit is a jab as Jessica was the valedictorian for their high school, barely beating out Becky.

Jamie and Jessica started to get into what they call "spell craft" about four months ago after finding a small shop that sold spell parts. From the moment they stepped into that shop they were hooked. Since leaving that shop, they've read tons of books, joined many forums and supposedly performed dozens of spells.

During all this time, despite telling Becky of all the spells they have cast, not to mention the power they've gained, they never got her to become interested. In fact, Becky is always ready to point out how their spells don't seem to be working correctly. Such as when Jessica cast a protection spell around her but was mugged that very day. When Becky mentioned this, Jessica stated that the protection was against demons, not humans.

"It is real, Becky," Jamie states very seriously. Her eyes have hardened, letting Becky know that this is soon to become a real fight. That Becky is trampling on the very "core" of Jamie's beliefs.

"It's real huh? So where is he at then? Huh?

HUH

? We supposedly just summoned the freaking Devil, yet I don't see shit. Is he busy? Didn't pick up the phone? Huh?" Becky berates, wanting her friends to feel stupid for believing this garbage.

For more than an hour Jamie and Jessica have been performing what they call the "Devil's Summoning of Lyre." It's a spell/summoning they found in one of the books they purchased. Of all the spells they wanted to do this one because of how insanely restrictive it was. Not only did the planets have to be in perfect alignment, but it had to be performed on a day of power, such as Samhain, otherwise known as Halloween.

"Don't say that!" Jessica nearly screams as she leaps to her feet. But instead of anger in her eyes, Becky sees fear. Real fear. Jessica is terrified of what Becky just said, which implies the Devil isn't real.

"The Devil is real, and you must not taunt him. Not after we just summoned him," Jessica tells Becky in what is almost a plead. Becky can even see that Jessica's gone a bit pale.

In a bit of shock at this reaction, Becky stares at Jessica in this dark forest. The only light is from the crackling fire, which makes her two friends look rather spooky. It is at this point that Becky muses that the spooky way the fire shines off her friend is the scariest thing about tonight as it sure isn't the Devil's arrival.

"Fuck the Devil. Let him believe in my ass, because that's the only thing here who gives a crap," Becky tells Jessica, stealing a line from Family Guy.

At that, Becky turns and grabs the white sheet she had brought with her. Fed up, Becky decides to leave. When she started the evening, she thought it would go very differently than what it did. She thought they would spend time together and find something fun to do. It was Halloween after all, and it's extremely hard not to have fun on Halloween.

The white sheet that Becky has is her costume for the evening, and no, it is not a KKK outfit. Becky does get intimidated very easily, especially in social situations, so she wanted a costume where no one would know it was her. So Becky decided to go with the Charlie Brown Halloween costume of a white sheet ghost. A sheet with two eye holes cut out that goes overhead.

If Becky could think up a different costume that would be as easy as the "ghost" one, she would have done so. The "ghost" costume has one large issue, her chest. Becky does have a large bust, which adds to her embarrassment during social interactions as it always feel like people stare at it. Normally she counteracts this by wearing baggy tops or hoodies in the winter months. But the sheet doesn't hide anything. It sort of accents the problem by sticking out.

"Becky, just wait ok? Let us end the ritual, then you can go. You can go out and get finger-banged by some fat old loser at whatever hip and clique party you want to go to," Jamie yells at Becky, clearly pissed.

"Oh no, I guess the Devil will get me now," Becky mockingly says to Jamie, pretending to be scared as she looks back at her friends. She does this because she knows it'll piss off Jamie even more.

"Oh yeah, he won't because he's not real," Becky yells back as she stomps off, quickly finding the main trail and walking away. Where the group had set up is directly off the main trail, but hidden by a row of trees so you wouldn't see them unless you walked around.

As Becky storms away, she hears her two friends calling out to her. They both yell for her to come back, that they need to finish the ritual or she'll be in danger. On purpose Becky doesn't reply nor say anything, she just leaves.

"Be careful! He can look like anything, and knows exactly what to do and say to get his way!" Jaime shouts out, her tone still very scared. If she wasn't scared of breaking the energy of the ritual she would go after Becky and drag her back if needed, knowing what danger her friend could be walking into.

Upset with herself, Becky doesn't even understand why she let them talk her into doing this tonight. She never believed in any of this spell crap and always refused to go along with it. And tonight, when they said they wanted to do the spell, Becky said no. But they kept on and on about Halloween or Samhain being a night of power that it wore her down.

Becky thought the spell would take ten minutes at most. But after an hour and they were still doing it with no end in sight, she knew that's all they were planning to do tonight. That they tricked her yet again with the spell crap.

Getting even more upset at her friends, Becky still doesn't understand why they would even want to summon the Devil, if he was real. Isn't he like, Mister Evil? Nothing good could ever come from it, so why summon him?

But Jessica had an answer to that when Becky asked. She wanted to summon him because he would answer any question asked, and would never lie. Jessica and Jaime went on to explain in great detail to Becky that the Devil doesn't have a physical body like we do, so he is unable to physically hurt anyone but that's what makes him so powerful. He has to use cunning and intelligence to trick people into doing what he wants or making a deal with him.

Ever since the three had started college, Becky has wanted to do more than what they have been doing. Not so much going to parties or anything like that but experiencing life. Finding new people, new groups, new things to do. But Jaime and Jessica are content to stay like they have been, being the outcasts, doing only the things they've been doing.

Becky honestly has no desire to be a party animal or to drink and do drugs. She's not even wanting a boyfriend. What she does want is to feel like she's grown as a person. That she isn't the geeky loser that so many said she was in high school. She wants to be seen as interesting and smart to others. To be someone others would want to be her friend and not the timid, social outcast that she's been.

Increasingly Becky wonders if the friendship with Jamie and Jessica is going to last. Becky does love them and doesn't want to go through life without them, but it seems as if they are growing apart fast. Becky easily sees the two of them staying together forever where they end up living in a run down, ugly house where all their neighbors tell their kids not to go near them.

And two streets over, there'll be Becky with her husband and kids, living a normal life with lots of friends. Where she always has to tell people that her friends aren't really that strange. That they are just after attention. This thought does make Becky sad, but at the moment she's too pissed off at her friends basically ruining the best night of the year.

A nearby snapping twig makes Becky stop in her tracks. In an instant, her anger towards her friends, the prospect of a fun Halloween, everything just stops and fear rushes in. She even holds her breath.

The truth of the matter, which Becky had forgot, is that she is alone in a dark forest at the moment. The dark, huge forest where any manner of rapist, murderer or human-monster may live. Sure, the forest is in the back of an upper middle class neighborhood, but anyone could be in here.

Whenever they go to the forest, the three girls always go together so it is never scary. They even worked out a plan in case someone does attack, where all three of them have a different weapon, with Becky's being pepper spray. But at the moment she doesn't have it as she didn't bring her purse.

As Becky looks around, she does want to call out, "Who's there?" but she knows how stupid that is. Even if there was a murderer looking at her, what are they going to say? "Hey, it's me, Bill, your murderer for the evening."

Knowing the best plan is to get the fuck out of the forest, Becky resumes her walk. As she walks, she looks around, especially behind her as she expects to see someone suddenly appear there. Becky does this because she can feel that someone's there, looking at her. Becky is unable to say why she thinks this, but she does feel it. It's a damn uncomfortable feeling too.

"Heya, Chicken Legs," a man directly in front of Beck greets. Becky was walking forward but looking back, so she didn't notice the man who was right in front of her on the trail. Now that she sees him, Becky does a leap back before she crashes into him, shaken at the sudden appearance of the man.

"S-S-Sorry,' Becky states upon backing up, her timid nature taking over as her heart pounds. The fear she felt disappears for a moment as the shock of him appearing comes over her.

Now with some distance between the two, Becky gets a good look at the man. Despite there only being moonlight coming in, Becky can see the man extremely well. It's almost like there's some secret light source the way she is able to see all of him.

Becky's stomach drops more and more as her fear level rises upon looking at the man. He is a very tall and muscular man, complete with hard muscles. These aren't show muscles either, but the type one would get by doing nothing but hard, manual labor. Whomever he is knows how muscular he is too because he only wears a wife-beater shirt on top, and what look to be gym shorts.

Looking sure and confident, the man stands in front of Becky, who is the opposite as she looks timid and scared. Her timid nature is brought out as she sees that he's purposely standing in the middle of the trail, blocking the way out.

To get out of the forest, Becky would have to get past him, which she knows she can't do. Even getting near the man would mean he would be able to grab at her. So she stays where she is, knowing with the distance between them she would be able to run the opposite way if he lunged for her.

"Trick or treating, Chicken Legs?" the large man asks, a somewhat mean-spirited smirk on his face.

Being called that name makes a sliver of humiliation run up Becky's spine. She is about to ask why he would call her that, but she always knows the answer. And the answer is that this man must have gone to high school with Becky. That was the horrible nickname she got her senior year; Chicken Legs. All because in gym she had to wear gym shorts, which showed her skinny, pale legs, which were different from her heavy top half.

"I...I don't want trouble. Just going home to trick or treat," Becky tells the man, clutching the white sheet which is bundled into a ball in her hands. She tries to say this with authority and force to show the man she's not scared, but fails.

Becky feels like she did back in high school when some group would bully her. Many times she had to stand there as the group blocked her way, making fun of her and calling her names. She would be made to stand there as they laughed at her body, or knocked the books out of her hands until they got bored or a teacher would save her.

"If you are trick or treating, I

have

to see your costume before you go," the muscular man tells Becky. He even motions to the balled up sheet that Becky clings to.

Feeling the familiar humiliation feeling at being bullied, Becky turns to see if her friends are around to save her. She then looks the opposite way, hoping against hope for a late night jogger or something. But no. She's all alone.

"Don't be a cunt, put the costume on," the man says, but this time there's a threat in his voice. It makes Becky think he may do something horrible if she doesn't do as she is told.

Scared and feeling as if she doesn't have much of a choice, Becky unballs the sheet. Once it is out, she lifts it up and over her head, allowing it to rest on top of her head. The sheet falls around her, covering her entire body, where she turns it so her eyes can look out the eye holes.

"A ghost. Cute," the muscular man says, but it's clear he doesn't mean it.

"But this is Halloween. The night of demons, ghouls, and monsters. A night of evil, of witches, warlocks and the Devil. Surely we can make you look scarier," the man tells Becky. This makes her shudder as she doesn't like the sound of what he's saying. It implies that he isn't going to simply let her go.

"We must make your costume scarier," he says, motioning for her to take it off.

With the same feeling she got in high school when her classmates would make her hand over possessions, Becky does as she is told with the hope that once he gets to embarrass her, he'll let her go. So she pulls off the sheet, very worried about what he is going to want her to do.

"I know exactly how to make it better. Go ahead and tear it," the muscular man tells Becky right before she tosses the sheet to the man as there is still distance between them.

"T-Tear it? O-O-Ok...where?" Becky asks, figuring that the man just wants to show his power by making her destroy her costume. Given the circumstances, it's not that bad of an experience. If she only has to destroy it and then be able to leave, she is ok with that.

"No, Chicken Legs, tear where its marked," the muscular man scoffs as if Becky is stupid. The way he does this makes Becky a bit defensive as she doesn't understand what he means. Where it is marked?

Looking down at the sheet, Becky gasps. The sheet is a pure white sheet that Becky took from her parent's linen closet. It was an old sheet, but a clean sheet with no writing, designs or patterns on it at all. Yet now, Becky sees two large X's on the sheet. X's that look as if they are part of the sheet and not a design put on in marker.

"How did you..." Becky asks very confused, holding up the sheet to see the X's. Then she looks up at the muscular man to see his face. There is no playing around with the expression he has. This makes Becky's logical mind tell her that the X's where there the entire time and she just missed them.

With the same humiliation that came when she was bullied in high school, Becky grabs the sheet at one of the X's. There she pulls hard, tearing and ripping at the fabric. Since she isn't sure how much to tear it, she stops after the tear in the sheet is several inches wide.

"Why are you making me do this?" Becky asks right before she tears the second X. She does this just like she would in high school when her bullies would make her day hell. It's a vain effort to get them to stop, to realize what they are doing is mean.

"Because I believe in you," the muscular man says and laughs. His laugh is very loud, seeming to echo around the forest.

"Now, try on your new and improved costume," the man states, motioning excitedly.

Before she does anything, Becky looks behind her again in hopes of seeing Jamie and Jessica coming towards her, but no. Her friends are nowhere to be seen, leaving her scared and helpless. And so, Becky slides the sheet back over her head, positioning it to be able to look out of the eye holes.

"It's better, but something is missing. Something is missing that would make it scary. Something big," the muscular man says in a pretend curious tone. It's a tone Becky heard often from her bullies. Where they already know what they want to happen but want to make it seem like they are thinking of it on the fly.

Feeling small and pathetic, Becky thinks how similar this feels to the torment in high school. Every day she would fear getting cornered by some bitch that would bully her. It was one of her greatest fears too as people would stop and watch the scene unfold.
