The tap at the door pulled Eliza away from the sound of her husband's snoring. Slowly she stood up opening the door, "Yes." She narrowed her eyes as the maid stood in front of her.
"I'm sorry to disturb you, but you have a visitor." The girl's voice was caught in her chest as she kept her eyes down, Eliza raised her hand to the girl's chin lifting it up, her neck was covered in bruises and her eye was black.
"Tell Mrs Jenkins that you are to be relieved with a months pay and a very good reference, she will understand." Eliza looked over at her husband, "Who is the guest?"
"He said his name was Edward."
Eliza nodded, "Alright, I will be down momentarily. As for you, I would leave today before he wakes." She said softly.
The maid said nothing as she backed away, Eliza glared at Jordan, his snoring echoed around the room. She closed the door leaning back against the hardwood as she closed her eyes, three deep breaths and she was ready to start the day.
It took a few minutes for her to dress and come downstairs, she wore a simple day dress in pink, her hair had been pulled back off her shoulders and the bare minimum of make-up touched her face. She pushed open the door to the sitting room, Edward had been given tea but he was stood looking at a picture on the wall, his back to the door. As he heard the door open he turned, his features so close to Jordan, but his brown eyes had a softness that her husband did not have.
"Eliza, forgive me for waking you." He moved towards her reaching for a hand.
A shy smile crossed her cheek, "I was already awake, but not dressed, if anything you pushed me to get out of bed." She offered, taking his hand, he bowed slightly lifting the back of her hand to his lips.
"Ah." He almost purred the word as he stepped closer, a hand moving to the small of her back as he guided her to the table. "How is Uncle Jordan?" He asked.
Eliza noted the terseness of the question, "Whoring all night, sleeping all day, but I am sure that you already know that."
Edward nodded as he pulled her chair back, leaning down as she sat, she could feel his breath of the back of her neck. "Why do you think I come to visit early?" She leaned back in her seat, his fingertip brushed over the bare skin of her arm.
"This is a dangerous game you play." She whispered. "He might be asleep now, but he will wake." She turned her head towards him, her eyes trailed over his face, he looked like Jordan, but there were the dark features of his father. She moved her hand brushing her fingers over his jawline softly she smiled.
"I don't care if he wakes." Edward knelt quickly, "Come away with me, now. You and the boys, please." He picked up her hand holding it softly.
Eliza looked into his eyes, she shook her head. "How many times do I have to tell you, I can't."
"I should have been there at your birthday, I would have never let you leave my side, we would be married and happy instead you are nothing but his possession."
"Edward." She shook her head, her red curls bouncing over her shoulder, "It would not have mattered, he was determined to have me. If I had been your wife he still would..." She closed her eyes tears fell silently as they had many times before, each one carving a little deeper into her heart.
He cupped her cheek, brushing them away before leaning in, his lips catching hers softly.
Eliza's mind pulled her back, his touch, though softer still reminded her of her wedding day.
She pulled back, her eyes fill with tears, not from joy but fear. Jordan stood before her, gripping her hand tightly. "You are mine forever Eliza." Jordan hissed slightly.
Eliza turned towards the guests, she forced a smile onto her face, each of the guests was clapping except one. Edward stood next to his twin sister Margaret she could see the anger in his eyes as he glared at his uncle.
Jordan gripped her arm walking her down the aisle and out the front door.
"Why did her parents even agree to this marriage?" Edward whispered towards his twin.
Margaret shook her head as she held his hand as they headed out of the church with the rest of the family. "From what I heard they had no choice." She whispered keeping her voice low.
"What do you mean?" He asked, his voice rising in anger.
