"Hi!" Michelle greeted Kate and Anna who stood at her doorstep, "Anna, you were able to come!"
"Hi, Michelle, long time no see!" Anna replied with a smile.
Michelle stood at the door, wearing a long, black dress and chain earrings, bringing out her natural complexion. Opposite of her stood Anna, wearing her high-cut green shirt and beige khakis. Next to her stood Kate, who had decided to wear a less-conservative pink blouse with a low cut and leggings.
Kate picked up her plastic pack and stepped inside with Anna right behind her. They walked across Michelle's living room to the kitchen counter, and Kate emptied the bag's contents on the tables. Cans of beer, bottles of wine, spirits, soda, juice, you name it. Kate had come prepared. Anna, on the other hand, had only a few ciders with her. She had told Kate earlier that she had to wake up early to write her essay, so she couldn't stay long.
"Kate told me you're seeing someone," Michelle said with an increasingly questioning tone in her voice.
Anna blushed a little.
"Yes, he will join us soon. He has Chess Club every Saturday afternoon."
"So a chess nerd," Kate said before Michelle even got her mouth open.
"Is he hot?" was the second thing to come across Michelle's mind.
"Apparently so," Kate said, as Anna's face turned even more red.
"Well. Miss Lucky, open that bottle of wine for me. We'd better start drinking, the other guests will be here soon," Michelle said and grabbed a glass.
"You expecting to meet someone, Kate?"
"Seeing how these people will mostly be your friends, not likely," Kate answered.
Michelle frowned at her, causing all three girls to laugh. Anna tossed the opened wine bottle to Michelle, who then proceeded to help herself.
"You never know, you might find Mr. Right One today."
*************
Sure enough, more people turned up soon. Michelle's neighbors, classmates, old high school friends, acquaintances and drinking buddies. Michelle shared a glass of wine with anyone who showed up at her door, and greeted them with increasing affections as the night, and the bottle of wine, went on. The night had started out great, with casual chit-chat, background music, and most importantly, alcohol. Anna, not so familiar with Michelle's friends, stuck to Kate, who had struck a conversation with one of her and Michelle's common friends.
"Anyway, when's your man gonna show up?" Kate turned to Anna, who had been sipping on her first cider for a few hours now.
"He just texted me he's climbing up the stairs. Should be here any minute now," she replied.
As Anna finished her sentence, they heard the doorbell ring.
"Must be the man of the hour," Kate said cheerfully, forcing her beer can on Anna.
"I'll get it."
On her way across the room she tapped Michelle on the shoulder, letting her know that a new guest had appeared.
"Awesome, I needed an excuse to have another drink!" Michelle exclaimed with a subtle slur.
"It's Anna's boyfriend, so get a hold of yourself," Kate said and reached for the front door.
"Welcome!" Kate cheerfully said as she opened the door, only to be completely silenced a nanosecond later.
She was greeted by a pair of blue eyes, expressing both confusion and surprise at the same time. The blue eyes that she had stared into a few days earlier. A man stood there, wearing a black t-shirt and jeans, and the same hipster glasses. Kate and Mike stared at each other without a spoken word.
*************
"I thought you weren't able to come!" Kate said, still overtaken by a shock of seeing Mike.
"Well, at first we were planning to see a movie, but nothing good was on, so we decided to come here instead" Anna said, leaning to Mike's shoulder and taking a sip of her cider.
"If I'd known you're friends with Anna, I would have said yes," Mike said and opened his beer with a satisfying 'psshh'.
"So how did you guys meet?" asked Michelle.
Anna and Mike looked at each other.
"Well, I wanted to take up chess to relax and forget about my lectures. I looked up the Chess Club online and decided to go have a look. As a new player I ended up playing with the captain, Mike, and as he explained the newbie strategies to me we started talking about other things. After the club he asked me to be his Facebook friend, and we continued our conversation online. Little by little our mutual affection grew and... here we are!" Anna explained, with a smile one both of their faces.
Kate took a long sip of her beer. She couldn't believe that the man she had flirted with and given her number to, was going out with her roommate. The roommate who let her take care of the chores as she ran around town joining chess clubs and hitting on perfect guys. She watched as Mike planted a kiss on Anna's forehead. Maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was the background music, maybe it was the crowd of people surrounding them, but something caused dark clouds of jealousy to gather within her head.
"She's so sweet! I'm happy that I can call myself her boyfriend now!" Mike said happily, raising his beer can in toast.
Anna kissed him on the cheek and Mike pulled her closer to his body in a hug. Kate was just about done.
"If you'll excuse me, I have to powder my nose."
She started making her way towards the toilet, yanking Michelle by the arm with her. She made sure that she was out of the hearing range and turned to Michelle.
"Isn't it funny that the guy you were hitting on is actually seeing your friend?" Michelle giggled, alcohol making her completely oblivious to Kate's frown.
"Hysterical. I need you to do me a favor."
"What's that?"
"I want you to keep him and Miss Kissy-Kissy apart from each other."
Kate saw Michelle's face turn confused.
"Why?" she asked, taking another sip of her wine.
"Because I need a night to not care, alright?" Kate was growing more and more frustrated.
"You still on about that, sis?" Michelle said and looked across the room where Mike and Anna were engaging in a nose kiss.
"Just do me a solid this once, and I'll introduce you to a member of the college basketball team," Kate said.
Michelle turned back to Kate, not being able to hide her enthusiasm.
"You got yourself a deal, missy!"
Kate took Michelle's hand and lead her back to where Mike and Kate were standing. Kate had to clear her throat in order to gain their attention.
"Anna, would you help me open another bottle of wine? My hands are kinda sweaty," Michelle asked, taking Anna's hand without a heads-up.
"Umm, s-sure," Anna said as Michelle was already pulling her towards the kitchen, leaving Mike and Kate alone.
"So," Kate said, turning to face Mike, "whatcha
really
think of her?"
"Anna's really sweet, it must be great living with her," Mike answered, taking a sip.
Kate didn't know how to answer that at the moment, so she took a sip of her beer as well.
"This party's great, it's nice to meet you and Michelle again. Like you said, we were bound to run to each other again," Mike said, breaking the silence between them.
"Yeah. Sorry about that by the way, I shouldn't have given you my number."
"It's fine, I threw it away already," Mike said with a nervous laugh.
That made Kate's stomach turn. He had thrown away her number. He really had no interest in her.
"Well, that's good, you and Anna seem cute together," Kate said, hiding her true emotions.
"Thanks, I really think this could become something more," Mike said, directing his gaze towards Anna and Michelle, who were in the process of opening yet another bottle of wine.
As Mike's attention was elsewhere, Kate did something. Maybe out of intoxication, maybe out of desperation. But she did it anyway. She subtly slid her free hand downwards and pulled slightly on her blouse, exposing more cleavage.
"She mentioned you got familiar over a game of chess. How's that?" she said, regaining his attention.
Mike looked at her beautiful face and wondered why her body had become so much enticing to look at. He decided not to think about it too much and instead focus on the question presented.
"Chess? Oh, it's great! The excitement of a battle first started centuries ago, the number of possible games exceeding the amount of atoms in the universe, the fierce strategic struggle of minds as both combatants charge into battle, trying to slay the opponent's king. It is just fantastic!" Mike explained with great enthusiasm, chess clearly being close to his heart.
Listening to Mike go on about chess made Kate happy in a way she couldn't quite explain. Maybe it was her mannish looks combined with his boyish passion for the sport. It could also have something to do with his compassion for mental games. This was a man who appreciated mental stimuli as much as Kate, and maybe even more. This, however, didn't help Kate's growing arousal.
As Mike went on about the subtleties of different strategies, Kate eyed him up. His black t-shirt really highlighted his biceps she had seen earlier, but this time she was also able to notice his broad chest and slightly muscular stomach. His jeans were able to hide the most precious things, but based on the curvature and bulge she was able to see, Mike wasn't far from a 12" pianist.
As she finished her beer, a thought run through her head, and this time it stuck. She had to get him.
"If you'll excuse me, I'll go get another beer," she had to interrupt his cute little rant, "I'll be right back."
She walked over to Anna and Michelle, who had been successful at opening the bottle. However, Michelle was in state in which she, whilst aiming for her glass, poured half of the wine on the kitchen table.
"Give me that, you'll get us both wet and dirty," Anna said and snatched the bottle from Michelle's hands.
"How's it going?" Kate said walking to the opposite side of the table.
