Tina's Therapy

by kiwibat

Tina was laying in bed, staring up at the ceiling when she heard a noise. It was the sound of her mom having sex.

Not again...

She pressed her hands up against her ears, trying to block out the noise but her mother's screams of joy echoed throughout the house.

"I can't take this," she groaned and grabbed her headphones. She put them on and started to play music, but she couldn't get the image out of her head

Tina ran down the hall to her sister's room and knocked. Emily opened the door.

"They're at it again," Tina said.

Yeah, I know." She said, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "It's getting worse."

Tina sat with her arms around her knees. "It's like now she's a whole other person. Like he's turning her into some kind of..." She stopped.

"I know,..." Emily said. "We gotta fix this somehow."

"How? He's always so careful."

Emily squeezed her fist. "I don't care. We're getting Mom back. No matter what."

Tina looked over at her sister and felt a bit of hope. Emily always knew what to do, if anyone could find a way to stop this, it's her.

***

It started with an ad for a spare room for rent.

$700 a month. For Women Only. No pets allowed.

At the time, it didn't seem like a big deal. It'd been a few months since her mom had lost her job and the bills were piling up.

Dr. Cooper wasn't what they had expected. He wasn't much older than their mom, with sharp features, a calm smile, and a voice that seemed to fill the room. He said he was new in town and needed a place to stay while they finished renovating his new house. The ad had specified women only, so Tina was surprised when he moved into the guest room above the garage.

Emily didn't trust him from the start. There was something strange about the way he talked. Like every word was carefully chosen. But their mom defended him. "He's a therapist," she told them. "You can always trust therapists."

Things were fine in the beginning. He was polite and quiet, and kept to himself. Then they started doing therapy together.

He offered to help Anna "regain her confidence." It'd been a couple months since she lost her job and she was starting to feel kinda depressed.

Then things started to spiral out of control.

Tina didn't notice much at first. She was too busy with school and the changes had been subtle. First it was her clothes. She used to dress pretty normal. Business professional for work. Sweaters, jeans, and other boring mom stuff for home. Then it became low necklines, tight skirts, high heels. She started becoming addicted to the attention.

Next was her personality. She started acting kinda...weird. Spacey and forgetful. Always seemed distracted. She'd laugh at things that weren't funny and shrugged off all of her usual concerns. She started to become more and more dependent on Dr. Cooper's suggestions. Letting him make her decisions for her: what to wear, what to eat, when to relax. She became obsessed with doing whatever he wanted.

And then, they started having sex.

By that point, her mom wasn't just taking advice from Dr. Cooper anymore. She was doing everything he wanted.

And the worst part was, she loved it.

"We can't keep letting this happen," Emily said, pacing the room.

Tina nodded. "But what are we supposed to do?"

"We need proof. He's doing something to her, hypnosis or brainwashing, we just need to prove it. We need to record one of his "sessions".

"How? He'd never let us go anywhere near there."

Emily stopped pacing. "You'll have to do it."

"What?"

"It's the only way. We'll hide a mic on you and record everything. Something we can use to prove what he's been doing to Mom."

"What if he tries messing with my head too?"

"It took weeks for her to start changing," Emily said. "It didn't happen overnight. It'll just be this one time."

Tina considered the idea. The thought of being alone with Dr. Cooper made her skin crawl. She didn't even like being in the same house as him. But Emily was right. They needed to do something.

Emily placed her hand on her sister's shoulder. "I won't let anything happen to you. I promise."

Tina sighed. "Alright, fine. I'll do it."

***

Tina was standing outside Dr. Cooper's office. It once was her mom's home office, but like everything else he'd taken that away from her too. For a brief moment, she considered turning back. But she remembered what Emily had said.

We have to figure out how he's doing this. We need to save Mom.

Tina took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Her hand was shaking. Moments later, the door opened and there he was: Dr. Cooper. His smile was cold and his stare made her shiver.

"Tina, come in. It's so good to see you. I'm so glad you decided to accept my offer."

"Yeah well, I could use someone to talk to right now."

There was a large recliner chair set up in the middle of the room. Everything was perfectly aranged. This was where he was brainwashing her Mom.

Dr. Cooper took a seat. "Relax. Theres no need to be so nervous."

His eyes were intense. It was like he could see right through her. It was almost like he could see the microphone she had hidden underneath her baggy sweatshirt, that was silently recording everything.

Stay calm

, she told herself.

It'll be ok...

*****

"So tell me, what's been bothering you?"

Tina hesitated. She didn't know where to start. Should she bring up her mom? Talk about school? Or maybe just make something up?

"I guess I've just been feeling really stressed out lately." It was the truth.

"That's perfectly understandable," Dr. Cooper replied. "Change is difficult. Especially when we feel like we've lost control. But you don't have to deal with it all on your own. I can help you."

"I don't know..." she said, trying to sound uncertain. She needed to lure him into saying something they could use. "What exactly would you be doing to help me?"

Dr. Cooper smiled. "Therapy is about changing how you see things. Sometimes we just need to

embrace

a new way of thinking."

A strange feeling washed over Tina, and her thoughts began to slow. His voice seemed to wrap around her mind.

"All you need to do is

focus

on my voice."

Tina blinked, trying her best to shake off the strange feeling.

"Just

relax

."

Tina's breathing slowed as Dr. Cooper's relaxing voice entered her thoughts. Each word was like a wave, washing over her. Her heavy eyelids started to close. Though her mind was still resisting, her body was giving in.

"You're doing so well, Tina," Dr. Cooper said. His voice was warm and comforting. "You feel relaxed now, don't you?"

Tina was struggling to focus. She kept reminding herself why she was here.

I have to stay strong. Im here to help Mom.

But his voiced continued, calming her anxious mind.

"It feels good to doesn't it? To not think. To not worry. To just

relax

."

Tina blinked. Her head dipped lower as she sank into the chair. There was something about his voice that made it feel so easy to...

relax

.

"No more worries. Just my voice, guiding you."

Tina's muscles relaxed. Her hands were resting in her lap. Her mind felt far away as Dr. Cooper's words made their way into her thoughts like a thick fog. It was getting so very hard to think.

"

Good girl

."

The word hit her hard, overwhelming her. A rush of warmth spread through her chest. The phrase echoed in her mind, growing louder and louder.

Good girl...

Something about being called a "good girl" made her feel...safe. She didn't question it.

She liked the way it felt.

The two sisters sat at the desk as Emily scrolled through the files on her laptop.

Tina couldn't stop thinking about her conversation with Dr. Cooper. She decided not to tell her sister about everything that happened, how strange it felt, how hard it was to focus. She kept replaying his words in her head.

Good girl.

It was just two simple words but she couldn't take her mind off it.

Emily played the audio they'd recorded, but on it there was only silence. "Where is it?"

"...What's wrong," Tina nervously asked.

Emily slammed her fist on the desk. "This is bullshit. This was supposed to be the proof we needed."

"I can go again," Tina said. She wasn't sure why she said that. "We probably just set it up wrong."

"No. Absolutely not," Emily said. "I'm not putting you through that again."

Tina felt conflicted. Part of her knew her sister was right. She should be staying far away from Dr. Cooper and his strangely relaxing voice. But another part of her...almost wanted to return. Like there was something there that was left unfinished.

"We have to, Em," Tina insisted. "It's the only way to save Mom."

"...Are you sure you didn't feel anything strange? He didn't say anything weird?"

"What? No! Everything was normal. We just talked."

Dr. Cooper hadn't done anything to her. He couldn't have. She would've known.

"Talked about what?"

"...School," she lied.

Deep down, Tina knew her sister was right. It wasn't a good idea. Going back there was dangerous. But every time she thought about it, it wasn't fear she felt, it was...excitement.

"I can handle it, Em. Trust me."

Emily sighed. It was a bad idea. Way too risky. Far too dangerous. But what other choice did they have?

"Fine...I'll check everything a dozen times. And if it feels like he's trying to do anything weird or something, you get out of there right away. Understood?"

Tina agreed. She felt excited.

Just one more time

, she told herself.

And I'll have it all figured out.

***

The next morning, Emily was sitting at the kitchen table on her laptop. She'd been up all night reading article after article about hypnosis and mind control.

I shouldn't let her go back

, Emily thought.

But what choice do I have?

Tina headed down the stairs. She was dressed casually in jeans and a hoodie, but something seemed...off. She looked a little

too

calm.

"You ready?" Tina asked.

"Yeah, I triple checked everything. It's gonna work this time."

Emily looked over at her sister. Something felt off. "You sure about this, T?"

Tina smiled. "I'll be fine. Really."

Emily watched from a far away distance as Tina knocked on the door to Dr Cooper's office and went inside. Now all she could do was wait.

Inside Dr. Cooper's office, Tina sat down.

"Welcome back. How are you feeling?"

"I'm okay, I guess."

"Good. Let's pick up where finished last time. Just

relax

. Feel yourself

relaxing

, just like before. You remember how easy that was, don't you?"

Tina's eyelids became heavy. Her mind started slipping into a haze. She tried to resist but each word pulled her deeper and deeper. She felt so calm. So relaxed.

"I remember," she said. Her body started sinking into the chair.

"

Good girl

."

Tina took a deep breath. Her fingers dug into her pants. That phrase again. It was taking over her thoughts. She could feel it in her mind. But she wasnt going to let it in. Not this time...not again. She needed to focus...needed to...remember...remember....why...she's...

Tina closed her eyes.

Outside, Emily paced around the kitchen, anxious and worried.

Inside the office, Tina's mind drifted far away. Her body had sunk into the chair. She was in a deep trance.

"Say it again."

"Dr. Cooper knows what's best for me."

"That's right. You trust me now, don't you?"

"Yes, Dr. Cooper."

"You need more."

"I need more."

Dr. Cooper smiled.

"Good girl."

Good girl. Good girl.

The words echoed through her mind, louder and more insistent.

"Now when you think back on this conversation, all you'll remember is that we had a nice conversation. You realized that I understand you better than anyone else. You want me to help you."

"Yes, Dr. Cooper..." Finally, the door to Dr. Cooper's office opened. Tina stepped out. Her face was calm and her eyes were glazed over.

Emily rushed over. "Well? How did it go? What happened? Did you feel anything strange?"

Tina blinked. The fog cleared from her mind. "No. It felt...normal. Just like last time."

"Okay...well, let's just listen to the recording."

They hurried back to Emily's room. Her hands were shaky as she inserted the memory card into her laptop. The audio file loaded. It had recorded the entire session. Emily held her breath and pressed play...but there was only silence. No voices. No sound. Nothing.

"No. No, no, no!" She pressed play again. Silence. "What the hell? It was working! I

know

it was!"

Tina quietly watched as Emily frantically scrubbed through the audio.

"How does this keep happening?" Emily groaned. "This was supposed to work. We were supposed to get proof. Something's seriously wrong."

"Maybe...we just need to...try again?" Tina asked.

Emily's head snapped up. "No! I'm not letting you go back there. It's not safe."

Tina wanted to say something but chose not to. Deep down she knew her sister was right. But part of her

wanted

to go back. Part of her craved more of Dr. Cooper's voice. And that scared her.

"I know, Em. I...I just want to help Mom. Maybe if I went just one more, I can figure out how he's doing all this. Maybe he'll slip up...or something..."

"No!" Emily shouted. "It's way too risky. We don't even know what he mightve already done to your mind."

"He hasn't done anything," Tina said, defensively. "We just talked. It's not like how it was with Mom."

"I'm not letting you go," Emily insisted.

Tina was torn between listening to her sister and the urge to see Dr. Cooper.

"You're right," Tina finally agreed. "I won't go. I just...really wanted Mom back."

Emily felt relieved. "I know, T. We'll figure out another way. I promise."

Later that night, Emily was sitting in her room, searching for information while across the house Tina was standing outside Dr. Coopers office. The temptation to go inside was so strong. It'd only been a few hours, but the urge was already coming.

One more time. Just one last time.

She thought about what Emily had said. Telling her to stay away. But there was another thought. One that urged her to just...

relax.

Tina knocked on the door.

Chapter Two

Tina couldn't help but feel anxious. She reminded herself she was just here to get answers. That she was in control. But there was something pulling her back to him. A voice that promised things would be okay, if she just

relaxed.

She knocked softly. "Come in," an inviting voice called out.

Dr. Cooper sat at his desk, smiling calmly. "Tina, I wasn't expecting you so soon. Is everything ok?"

She paused, suddenly wondering what she was doing here.

"I just wanted to talk. About our last meeting.

"Of course, take a seat."

Tina looked back at the door. It wasn't too late to leave. But once she stared into Dr. Cooper's deep, dark eyes, her doubts dissapeared.

"What's wrong? You look troubled," Dr. Cooper said.

"Emily doesn't think I should see you anymore."

"Why's that?"

"She thinks you're... well, she's worried. About Mom."

"I see." Dr. Cooper paused. "That's understandable. Your sister is very protective of you. She's trying to look out for you in her own way. But what do you think? Do you think you shouldn't be here?"

"I...I'm not really sure."

"You seem conflicted. Torn between what others want you to do, and what feels right for yourself. That must be difficult to deal with."

Tina looked down at her hands. He was right. She always felt this pressure to live up to the expectations of others. Emily. Her mom. She was tired.

"I just...I don't know what to do anymore."

Dr. Cooper smiled. "That's why I'm here, Tina. To help you." He paused, his eyes locking onto hers. "You don't have to deal with it on your own."

His words sank into her thoughts.

"You're a good girl, Tina."

Good girl

. It was only two words, but there was something about the way he said it that made her feel so...warm. Relaxed. Comforting. Like she was doing the right thing.

"Your mother tells me you've always been a

good girl

. Always doing what's right, always taking care of others. But you don't always have to do that. It's okay to

relax

. To let someone else help you."

"I...don't know if I can."

Part of her wanted to argue. But another part wanted to give in. The idea of relaxing... sounded nice, really nice.

"That's alright. You don't have to know everything. You're a

good girl

. And

good girls

listen.

Good girls

relax. Just close your eyes... and breathe."

The words floated through her mind. Her eyes grew heavy and her thoughts faded away. She felt torn between wanting to resist and the desire to listen. To be a

good girl

.

"Yeah," she agreed. "Good girls listen."

"That's right.

Good girls listen

. Just

relax

and let your thought fade away. You don't have to worry about anything right now. That sounds nice, doesn't it?"

Tina let out a happy sigh. Her mind was quiet, focused only on his voice.

"...Yeah...that sounds real nice..."

"

Good girl

." Another wave of pleasure.

"You're doing so good," Dr. Cooper said.

"I want... to be good."

Tina's body sank deeper. Her mind melted into the words. Into the warm feeling. She couldn't fight anymore. She didn't want to. into the warmth. She couldn't fight it anymore. She didn't

want

to fight it.

She just wanted to be good.

***

Tina sat in chemistry class. Her professor's voice faded into the background and her mind started to wander. She started thinking about Dr. Cooper's words, playing in her head like a relaxing song.

You're such a good girl, Tina. Good girls listen. Good girls relax.

No,

she told herself, pushing the thoughts away.

I shouldn't be thinking about this. I have to focus.

Tina found it hard to concentrate. The sound of her pen on the paper was almost hypnotic. With each stroke, Dr. Cooper's voice grew louder in her mind.

You're trying so hard, Tina. It's okay to just let go. You don't have to resist. Good girls don't resist. They relax and let someone else take care of them

.

Thinking about being a good girl made her chest feel warm. Like a hot coffee on a cold morning.

Tina shut her eyes.

No, no, no. This isn't right

.

But the more she tried to fight, the stronger they became. She needed to figure out what was happening with her mom. To help her before it was too late. But Dr. Cooper's words wrapped around her mind, encouraging her to just relax.

Later that evening, Tina walked up to her mom's room. She heard bubbly laughter coming from inside. It had a vapid ring to it. She knocked softly and then entered.

"Hey, Mom," she said, forcing herself to smile.

Anna was laying in bed. Her short, tight pink dress struggled to contain her voluptuous figure.

This isn't right

, Tina thought. She tried reminding herself of the strong, independent women her mom used to be. Someone that everyone respected.

Anna smiled brightly. "Hi, sweetie!" She stopped when she saw the worried look on her daughter's face. "What's wrong?"

"I'm worried about you. You've...changed. You used to be so strong and smart, and now you're--"

"And now I'm happy," Anna giggled. "I've finally accepted my true self! It feels so good to finally just relax."

Relax.

The phrase echoed in Tina's mind.

"But I'll always be your mom. And I still love you and your sister more than anything. I've just...learned to embrace a new way of thinking, that's all."

"Don't you miss the way you used to be?"

Anna smiled warmly. "I mean, sure, I loved my job, but it was so stressful. And I was always so uptight about everything. I'm much happier now. I get to look pretty, wear fun clothes, and actually enjoy life. Why would I ever want to go back?"
